Around SBN: NFL Roundtable: Which Draft Pick Is Most Likely To Bust?

Free Agents the Raiders should consider???

There are many free agents available right now, but the raiders haven't made very big moves. The only player so far the Raiders have signed is Erik Pears. What is it that they are doing then, if they are not signing players?

What the Raiders have been doing is restructuring contracts so they can bring in big names from free agency and have money for the draft, if they are going to try to do something big in the draft, lets say like a trade for the No. 7 overall draft pick that they have (just a thought). But lets put the draft aside, and think about what they have to do in the free agency market. There are many big names out there as FA's so what the Raiders need to do now that they have restructured many contracts, (that includes WR Javon Walker, RB Justin Fargas, and O-Lineman Robert Gallery, and many other players on their roster) is start thinking about they need to improve on and start filling in holes at positions such as SS, T, and should consider putting OG Cooper back on the bench and bring in somebody else.

So now what they have do is start listing who are possible names out there in free agency that would want to play for the Raiders, but not completely ruin there cap room. What we need to do is bring in guys who want to play, are good and not busts,  guys who are committed to playing for the team, and last but not least guys who don't only think about the money. So the question now is, who are those people. Well lets start naming them starting from the OL.

Star-divide

Offensive Linemen:

As for the OT's we have:

1. Khailf Barnes: (Jacksonville Jaguars) The raiders were close to making a deal with him, but it seems now that he doesn't even want to consider the Raiders as a possibility. My suggestion is that the Raiders keep in contact with him and offer him another deal, because he is be one of the best, if not the best OT in free aency right now.

2. Tra Thomas: (Philadelphia Eagles) The Eagles have already said that they do not want him not more, so that means that the Eagles will not be re-signing him anymore, making the Raiders a possible next destination for the aging OT. Now many people are saying that he is to old, but he still has talent and will do his job as a pass and run blocker and give Jamarcus Russel plenty of time to throw a great pass.

3. Marvel Smith: (Pittsburgh Steelers) If not because of his Injuries, he would be one of the top 10 OT's in the league. I believe that the Raiders did get in contact with him and are trying to work a deal with him, but have not yet come to terms. If the Raiders are able to get him, then this would be a great deal.

4. Trai Essex: (Pittsburgh Steelers) This young OT, has still not developed into a solid starter, but has a lot of potential. If the Raiders cannot come to terms with any of the 3 other OT's listed above then they should get this guy.

Centers:

1. Melvin Fowler: (Buffalo Bills) Adam Schefter, of the NFL Network, reports the Oakland Raiders are scheduled to meet with unrestricted free-agent C Melvin Fowler (Bills) Tuesday, March 3. This should be the No.1 FA Center that the Raiders can pick up at this moment seeing that all the other good Centers have gotten picked up by other teams.

2. Steve McKinney: (Seattle Seahawks) This could be the second option for filling in the Center position for the Radiers if they do not get Fowler. Steve McKinney is getting old, but as long as he gets the job done that is all that matters.

Guards:

Although the Raiders have already re-signed OG Cooper Carsiles (however you spell it) he is not a very good Guard and not only that he is getting old, so I would like it if the Raiders get someone else and move Cooper to the bench.

1. Chris Kemoeatu: (Pittsburgh Steelers) He is young and not a bad player at his position, has a lot of potential, and I don't think that he would ask for too much money, so thats a plus. He is listed at 6'3'' , 344 and was the starter for the Steelers.

2. Chris Naeole: (Jacksonville Jaguars) He was a starter for the Jaguars back in 2006 but has gotten replaced by someone else, so now they are not even going to re-sign him. He is 34 years old, but once again as long as he gets his job done he is alright with me. He is listed at 6'3'' , 328.

If they can't get any Free Agent OL:

Then they should work a trade with a team to get an OT, OG, or C, because wasting the No.7 draft pick this year on a OL would just be plain dumb. Some of the teams I have looked at are:

St. Louis Rams: OT Orlando Pace: He is 33 years old, but has never failed to do his job unless he was injured. He is a great player and very tall and big at his position. He would be a big difference in helping QB Jamarcus Russell throw the ball and not get sacked, because is one of the best pass and run blockers. Also Michael Lombardi, of The National Football Post, reports the Oakland Raiders are looking into the possibility of acquiring St. Louis Rams OT Orlando Pace. He is listed at 6'7'', 325.

Jacksonville Jaguars: OG Maurice Williams: He is 30 years old, listed at 6'5'', 302 pounds. Maurice Williams was a starter for the Jaguars, but got injured and hasn't been playing. He has a lot of potential to become one of the best if not the best OG or OT in the league. He is young and if the Raiders would be willing to make a trade with the Jaguars, then this would be a great pick up for the Raiders.

Now for the SS:

The first name that everyone in the Raider Nation is thinking right now is Roy Williams. That would be a great pick up if the Raiders would get him, but if they dont lets think about the other great names we have out there in free agency.

1. Roy Williams: (Dallas Cowboys) Which I have already named and talked about. He is young, a great hard hitter (he can crack someone hard), but the negative is what he lacks in playing coverage.

2. Darren Sharper: (Minnesota Vikings) This would be my pick if I were Al Davis. Sharper is a Big-Hitter and very talented on coverage, he has good hands too, so many QB’s wouldn’t want to throw it on his side because the interception is a guarentee. I would love for him to come to the Raiders and even retire with the Raiders. In my opinion he is way better than Roy, and has better hands. Now if he would want to come to the Raiders? I can’t really answer that question, because he is getting old and he might want to be on a winning team, but then again if the raiders show him the money he might just change his mind. Between SS Roy Williams and SS Darren Sharper either one would be a great pick up, but the raiders need to pick up one of them. Darren Sharper is 33 and listed at 6'2'' and 210 pounds. Some of his Career Highlights are:

  • Pro Bowl selection (2000, 2002, 2005, 2007)
  • All-Pro selection (2000, 2002, 2005, 2007)
  • Led the NFL in interceptions in 2000
  • 3. Rodney Harrison: (New England Patriots) Hard to believe that he is a free agent now, but lets not let him get away or judge him on his age. Harrison is the only player in NFL history to record both 30 sacks and 30 interceptions. So now saying that you know he can tackle then. Just because he is 36 doesn't mean he can't play. I say give him a 1 or 2 year deal at the most. Some of his career highlights are:

  • 2x Pro Bowl selection (1998, 2001)
  • 3x First-team All-Pro selection (1998, 2001, 2003)
  • 1x Second-team All-Pro (2004)
  • 2x Super Bowl champion (XXXVIII, XXXIX)
  • Notable accomplishments and records
  • Finally the Wide Recievers:

    1. Michael Crabtree: Obviously we need to draft him. He is the best WR in the draft.

    2. Jerry Porter: (Jacksonville Jaguars) The Raiders were the ones who drafted him back in 2000 in the second round. Now he is a free agent because he had a bad year over there in Jacksonville and got cut. Even if the Raiders don't want to take back a reciever that they gave away, they should still consider giving him a low priced contract for 1 or 2 years and see what he can do, accomplish, and if he can exceed and become a great or better reciever than he already is.

    3. Torry Holt: (St. Louis Rams) Just incase he does get his wish of getting released from the Rams. He would be a huge difference in getting a number 1 reciever for the Raiders. Holt has a lot of experience and can rub off his experience on all the young WR's that the Raiders have. He has great hands and rarely drops balls, and he is a very committed player once he starts playing for a team. Torry Holt is 32 years old.

    4. Marvin Harrison: (Indianopolis Colts) Still could be a solid No. 2 if he’s healthy, but he’s falling off fast. One or two more years of solid production may be it. Don't judge him by his age, he can still play.

    5. Plaxico Burress: (New York Giants) The Giants haven't made it clear if they are going to release, trade, or keep Burress, so if they do release or trade him the Raiders need to get him. The Raiders need to get Plaxico, because aside from him being kind of bizarre for shooting himself in the leg, he has great talent and one of the tallest WR in the league standing at 6'5''. He is bearly reaching his 30's at the age of 31. Burress has great hands and can still catch the ball over corners or double coverage, because of his height difference. Great player for the Raiders because he can stretch the field.

    6. Amani Toomer: (New York Giants) Leading receiver in Giants history is a classy vet playing out the string. Just incase the Raiders can't get anyone big out of free agency, they can get Toomer as something sure that can atleast get them the ball up in yards.

    Cornerback:

I know that the Raiders don't desperately need a CB because they already have Asomugha, but imagine the thought of altleast getting someone who can take the pressure off of Nnamdi Asomugha, lets say like Bryant McFadden.

    1. Chris McAlister: (Baltimore Ravens) Once again, its not like we need another CB, but we want to have both starting recievers covered by sure CB's. This is just a thought that the Raiders can bring in McAlister to California. Chris is from Pasadena, CA, (just outside of Los Angeles) so I think that he would want to play for the Raiders since he is from California. Chris is a great CB and would really help the Raiders defensive scheme if they were to bring him in. The Ravens released McAlister meaning that they don't want him any more, and that he can be signed by any team. Chris is 31 years old, with a lot of experience, and can really play, that is if he stays healthy.

    2. Bryant McFadden: (Pittsburgh Steelers) Best cornerback among a lot of mediocre ones in free agency. He has been developing into a top CB and has had interceptions last year, meaning he has good hands. He also played in the Super Bowl so experience is good for a group like the Raiders. He is 30 years old.

    Quarterback:

Just incase any of you guys haven't heard,  Michael Vick is coming back to the NFL.

    1. Michael Vick: (Atlanta Falcons) This will create a lot of attention to Al Davis' eyes, and trust me he wouldn't want to pass up a chance like this. Al Davis doesn't care about the media and what they are going to say, if he gets the chance to pick up Michael Vick he won't just let it slips through his fingers.

So Raider Nation tell me what you guys think the Raiders should do in free agency and the draft.

    Very Good Analysis

However, some of those guys already re-signed so it will be nice if you could update.
Ok, I hope we stay in contact with Khalif, just like you said. I am saddened that he couldn’t sign with it because he was my X-Factor in this year’s free agency. But, there’s got to be a reason he wasn’t signed. He was probably asking for too much money.
Also, Everyone is talking about the Sharper Idea. Personally, I think it is the “sharper” idea also. He is very, very good in coverage.
Ok, now Michael Vick. Are you serious. I hope he doesn’t come here. It is intriguing, but still, we can’t have that image on the team. If we really want a running back up or Wild Cat QB, draft Pat White.

    lets be honest

when al wants to sign a guy, theres no such thing as “too much money”.

seems like cable guys staying away from the locker room disruptions like jerry porter…

interesting idea trying to bring in another star cb to play w/ asomugha like mcalister or mcfadden. xcept that we already tried that…besides, its CJs time now…

Don't confuse me with the facts, my mind is made up!!

    I'm happy the Raiders are

not going crazy in the free agent market, too many guys get big contracts and don’t produce. Last year Al went crazy and look what it got us,nothing. It appears the Raiders have taken a lot of money off the books, and starting to run this franchise sensibly. Spending big money guarantees a team nothing. This team has a pretty good foundation and the #7 pick. The team clearly needs a center more than a tackle right now. There are still a few tackles out there and if not, certainly there is one in the draft. I am pretty sure Al will get a tackle in here pretty soon, if not Barnes then someone else. Why give big money to Barnes and then be stuck with releasing him or having to restructure his contract next year. If he is that good then Jacksonville wouldn’t let him walk. I think the Raiders can get their center in the 2nd round, be it Mack or Unger. If Al signs a free agent tackle then it almost certainly means they will go with Crabtree or Mclin in the first round. It appears that Sands isn’t going anywhere much to my surprise.
I am curious about Walter, it looks like the Raiders are trying to find another back up QB which might mean Walter would be traded. I don’t think he is due that much money so why would they release him? Thank god Buffalo signed TO, one less headache for the Raiders. I was afraid Al might want him.

    Finally right!!

the team looks prime to change its losing no run D habits
with the Cable guy really getting a say in matters
    things might turn around
the raiders should get sharper but like ya said might not be
williams will definetly be a presence against the run so its not all bad
and i’m actually Really hoping Vick will land because if there’s caproom
by the time he’s out and the drafts over why not
with receivers i don’t think any FA’s will get signed with crabtree or any Top 5 receivers
it’ll really be better we get young raw talent and then down the draft it should be
big fast O/D linemen oh wait by the way
they should resign Justin Miller a good corner and brought back 2 TD"S on kick returns!!

by bizy_b on Mar 7, 2009 7:46 PM PST reply actions

    Where exactly

would Vick play… he would be just another has-been distraction guy on a roster that needs to find its own identity. I think we just need to find a decent tackle, maybe go get a veteran saftey, and just be smart in the draft.

by Holy Toledo! on Mar 7, 2009 9:35 PM PST up reply actions

I'm gonna say absolute no to Vick

and all of your S seem like high-cost guys to me. We could easily get Dawan Landry for a cheap price and be handed a very talented S. I consider him a lesser version of Sharper.

For OT, I say that we need to pursue Marvel Smith, Tra Thomas, and a name you didn’t mention, Jon Runyan.

I don’t know hwy everybody’s ragging on Cooper as a G. He’s still a starter, all we need is a young guy in case he gets injured or retires.

I actually think Oakland should try to add somebody for CB depth in case Chris Johnson doesn’t work out. Behind him is Stanford Routt who’s kinda iffy. Routt’s no starter, hell of a nickel corner though.

If we’re talking FA-wise at WR, then I have to say Toomer. He’d be a cheap guy who adds a talented veteran presence to the WR corps. Very sure handed, he’d line up well next to JLH.

i think our biggest concern in free agency is signing a tackle. we should have had barnes but i think he wanted more money. if i remember right the reason why jax didnt resign him is cuz him and del rio didnt get along mostly cuz barnes attitude. anyway… other than him i think tre thomas next in line or john runyan. at safety if anyone sharper cuz he can cover and has a big presence on the field and can mentor huff, tyvon and eugene. at cb again if anyone maybe mccalister if cheap. about mike vick dont want him hes not gonna play the same as he did. plus we dont want a guy like that in locker room. if want to run wildcat we got mcfadden already. i knew we werent goona get t.o i actually thought miami would but the bills stumped every1. over and above all i like how the raiders are being patient in free agency way better than last year. i think tom cable is the head coach we needed. turn us arond tom!

    Duke Preston

Also mentioned for center is Duke Preston, who the raiders had in for a work out. Preston is the the one who replaced Fowler at center during the 2008 season. Preston is younger and maybe a better fit for the Raiders.

    Preston's way better for here

and i don’t understand how we haven’t gotten this deal done yet unless Al really wants to draft Mack or Unger which is definitely not out of the question.

    Burress

Very good analysis, but one quick question.
You said the Giants have made it very clear that they are going to trade, release, or keep Plax. Well I’m not sure there is another option. That could be said about every player in the NFL. Nice right up though, and I would not be a fan of bringing in Plax or Vick

by bloodshot13 on Mar 8, 2009 4:15 PM PDT reply actions

    Tank Johnson
Marvin Harrison or Torry Holt if he gets released
Khalif Barnes, Marvel Smith, Orlando Pace if he gets released
    Victor Adeyanju

by DarthDavis on Mar 8, 2009 5:38 PM PDT reply actions

    why does everyone say Pace?

he’s nowhere near as good as he once was. he’s constantly injured and as I said, not playing up to the elite status he once was. Also add in the fact that he’s so old he could retire as early as next year, especially with his level of play dropping rapidly.

    I like Brooks

But I don’t think he could cut it in our Man to Man style defense after playing in a cover 2 for so many years, and he’s too old to make that kind of adjustment now.

    well said MattAdor

I would love Mike Peterson as I’ve been pushing for us to sign him all offseason.

June and brooks are too used to the cover 2, too old, and are on the downsides of their once elite careers. Roy Williams would be too expensive in my mind.

in fact I’m at a draw between jaspar and mike. Kirk was average, he would be much better on the outside. Ricky was also kinda average. I actually think Alston could pass him by for starter if Kirk doesn’t move outside.

The only tackle we should get i think is barnes. Marvel smith is a big bruiser who still can move but im not sure if he can be a zone run blocker. And runyan is a huge injury concern. Plus he isnt mobile. i like him, but no worth it. barnes is athletic and might not be as polished in form as runyan or smith, but he can move, which is a requirement in our system,. i just dont think smith or runyan can move well enough. actually, maybe smith can play right. i mean cornell green played right for us, and he is not super athletic.

Barnes is out of the Raiders' plans

Al Davis stopped the negotiations with Barnes and they will not sign him. The remaining available FA tackles is getting thin and the Raiders appear to be interested in Marvell Smith.

I think anyways with what is out there now, the Raiders are looking to sign Marvell Smith to back up Henderson at LT and the newly signed Pears would be the starter at RT with Green backing him up.
