Roll Call

It's coming soon...the NFL pre-season is right around the corner, and today I'd like to start up what I'm going to dub "The Roll Call."  Right now, I'm thinking of a few things that we as Raider fans would like to see, what we expect, and what we can do to make sure that being a lifelong Raider is just as awesome a feeling as it ever was.

First thing I want to make so very clear: as a Raider fan, we have an expectation of support for our guys.  That doesn't mean don't criticize them, please by all means if a guy isn't performing on the field, feel free to let them fly.  But what it does mean is whether we get shellacked on Monday night in a blowout or win on a Sunday night miracle, we should be behind this team just the same.  The worst kind of fan is the one that disappears during a mid-season struggle.  Support our guys.

I'd also like to start off by making a list of a few things I'd like for our guys to do next year.

  1. Improve the running game from a top-10 unit to a top-5 unit.  This should not be that hard, considering we should be getting Oren O'Neal back, which should give us a great lead blocker, and hopefully he's been able to keep up his progression into an option out of the backfield as well.
  2. Get out of the cellar with our passing offense.  I will not put this solely on JaMarcus Russel's shoulders.  We simply did not produce at the receiver position last year and it really hurt us in the redzone, and it put unnecessary pressure on the run game to move the chains.  So when we add a receiver at some point, we need to get on labbing this piece of our offense.
  3. I would like for our defense against the run to improve, starting with our upfront guys.  I know that we've held our own in the trenches, but I also noticed Sands and Warren are gassed a lot, and I believe that we could improve our conditioning and be more effective against the run.  Nearly every team in our division has highly talented running backs, and having an advantage up front will go a long way to becoming a respectable team.
  4. Improve our safety play, because to be honest, that's the weak link in our secondary.  We have an amazing guy in Asomugha, and a guy that let us trade Fabian Washington in Johnson.  All we need is a capable nickel corner, and for Huff+1 to not stink up the joint.  But improvement is direly needed.
  5. In terms of winning games, of course we root for the Raiders in all 16 games, but as far as a goal goes, I would like to at very least, split the games with Denver and San Diego, and sweep the season series with the Chiefs.  That would leave us at 4-2 in the division and I like that quite a bit more than 3-3 or 2-4.

That's 5 things that we can improve on this season, and hopefully that's not too tall of an order for Tom Cable and our Oakland Raiders.  As for the Roll Call, this is where you all come in.  I want everyone who reads this to either state one of their goals for this season, or relay a moment (any season) where being a Raider fan made you as proud as you can be.  This site is a Raider Haven, so I want to make sure that we've got as many people bleeding SIlver and Black as we can.

I Know A Lot Of Fans

Who “loved” or “bleed” the Silver and Black in 2002, and now, love another team or don’t watch football. I think it is stupid being a bandwagon hopper because how do you suddenly just begin liking another team? To me, it is impossible.
Right now, I know who the real fans of the Raiders are. Most of the die-hard fans are here. In fact, we have one fan in West Virgina who loves the Raiders. A true die-hard fan. (I feel sorry for him because he doesn’t get the games on TV.) I think when it comes to die-hard fan, Kaiz beats us all.
I think the Raider’s fans are the best fans in the business. This is evident by so many reasons. People said the Kings had the best fans. Well, they couldn’t even sell out their home opener or any game this season.
Some say baseball fans are the best fans. Well, how is that possible when I see numerous fans yawning after a couple innings.
The sharks have some great fans also, but I know we have some band wagons hoppers there. They can’t even pronounce the names of our players.
The Raider fans always filled out the home opener, each and every season. Yes, the last couple seasons our record was horrible. But, I still saw a huge crowd arrive for the games daily. We are hands-down the best fans in the business.
I am proud to say, “I am one of those fans!”

One of those fans

I’d like to think of myself as one of those fans as well. I’m new to the site, but I’ve been a lifelong Raider fan.

I’m excited about the direction and enthusiasm of the organization. I’m optimistic that the offseason has begun a change in the character of the locker room. I’m perplexed about the media’s insistence on degrading this proud franchise that has come upon hard times, but is undoubtedly going to rise again (I will credit Mortensen for saying the league is better when the Raiders are relevant this morning on Sportscenter). Most of all, I’m happy to belong to the Raider Nation…a nation that introduced the idea of a collection of fans being more than mere supporters of a team. The “Yankee nation” or " Red Sox nation" have nothing on us.

i kno this probably isn't the case for the kings but...

a lot of the attendance might have to do with how much money the fans have. I know last year I went to significantly less A’s games just bcuz i was trying not to run out of cash….

just saying, it’s hard to judge fan loyalty by attendance.

Don't confuse me with the facts, my mind is made up!!

question about the D-line

you state that the DL has held their own in the trenches makes me believe that you were not watchin the Oakland Raiders. If we have a safety who had 135 tackles(g. Wilson) means the RB is getting to the 2nd level. Coupled with the fact they were 31st against the run, the only thing the DL was holding was hands with eachother.

Their technique is fine.

Being gassed is what got them beat.

everyone here knows

I would agree with you robert p. the amount of tackles from Wilson, Morrison, and Howard are glaring indications that Sands and Kelly were not holding their own. D-line and stopping the run has got to come first now.
Arguments could be made it was Ryan’s no blitz vanilla defense scheme. The lack of effort by Sands and Kelly with little competition/talent to push them. The fact that most of the D line is a group of specialist and constantly miss matched down to down with a lack of every down lineman. Well this is the season to truly find out… No more Ryan and we can look at a couple of options in the draft to upgrade personnel.

looking forward to the next 30 years of this team

Right on about D-Line

Rob Ryan was a dissapiontment

I expected a lot more out of his defences but he sat on his ass and wouldn’t blitz

What I want to see is MUCH better execution on offense, more timing routes, some barking cadence(to draw an offsides) and pump fakes by by Jamarcus
And Garcia to show J-mac what to do with an open field when the recivers are covered

Our coaching staff was weired last year

We had Rob Ryan who like you stated never blitzed. I can’t wait to show up in Cleveland and destroy his defense with huge passes from Jamarcus and long runs from Mcfadden. Greg Knapp was our offensive co but he sucked really hard can wait to show up in Seattle and show him some offense. Also Tom Cable has to change with his trick plays and stuff, out off all the time he used them I say he was 35% successful at it. Remember he cost us the Chiefs game at home, almost lost to the Jets at home when they missed the first kick and made the second. However some positives tried a onside kick and got it back, fake punted and got the first down. To me I hope we don’t see much of it next year. Just keep it simple we are not the Dolphins-Wildcat on every down.

Clarkkent559 Checking In

greatest moments in 2008 were when we avenged our Monday Night Massacre buy delivering a nightmare massacre of our own, and knocking out the Bucs from playoff contention and finally what people dont realize is even though close dont count had we won all of the close games we would be division champs last year call me a homer if you want but we should have had Buffalo, Miami, KC the second time around, and i believe the chargers first time around just a couple mistakes that would have made us 9-7 Division Champs with the worst passing offense in the N.F.L. i cant wait to see what happens when we finally get some Hands to catch the ball in the Red Zone.

The Autumn wind is a Raider
Pillaging just for fun
He’ll knock you ’round and upside down
And laugh when he’s conquered and won.

Hill earned the starting job for the 2009 season by beating out Alex Smith, who missed last season after re-injuring his surgically repaired throwing shoulder. Head coach Mike Singletary largely chose Hill based on his play down the stretch last year: he went 5-3 over the final eight games and he also owns a 5-0 record at home in Candlestick Park.
