Raiders Second Round Roulette
via felfire.files.wordpress.com
Well, maybe not a roulette wheel per say, but just like there are many numbers on a roulette wheel, there are many intriguing names in the second round of the draft for Oakland. There are many players that many of you have put as your ideal second round guy based on your ideal first round, let us now look at these players more in-depth.
The format as such will be:
- Player's name, size, position, and college
- Player's picture
- Player Info and reason for selection
- Combine numbers
- First round scenario(s) that would lead us to draft said player
- Highlights if available
-Jarron Gilbert, 6-5; 280 lbs., DE/DT, San Jose State-
Jarron Gilbert is a freakish athlete who can play either DT or DE very effectively. A rare combination of pass rusher (9 sacks last year) and run stopper (51 tackles last year) which is precisely what Oakland needs. Gilbert has elevated his level of play each year and is still getting better and better. Big, strong, fast, a combo Oakland's been missing from its DE's for years.
40-yard dash: 4.87
Bench Press: 28 reps
Vertical Jump: 35.5
Broad Jump: 9'11"
3-cone drill: 7.70
20-yard shuttle: 4.56
60-yard shuttle: n/a
Scenario: If Oakland doesn't draft a Orakpo in the first, Gilbert has to be strongly considered for the second round pick. Not many base ends in the draft and none as good as Gilbert (other than Orakpo)
-Ramses Barden, 6-6; 229 lbs., WR, Cal Poly Tech-
Ramses or Crabtree, seems to the be the big question around here. Ramses is very good WR prospect, despite his small school status. But we all know Al loves the small school guys, especially when it comes to receivers (Shields and Schilens) Barden's draft status has been sky-rocketing since his recent pro-days and visits to multiple teams, including the Oakland Raiders. The Raiders even paid more attention to Barden at the USC Pro Day than the USC linebacker trio. Last year Barden nabbed 67 receptions for 1,257 yards. That's an amazing 18.8 yards per reception average. An even more amazing feat, 18 touchdown receptions, in each of the last two years. Though his combine numbers make him to be slow for a WR, his pro day numbers disproved that. Barden is huge, fast, and has the best set of hands, other than Crabtree, in the entire draft.
40-yard dash: 4.68
Bench Press: 17 reps
Vertical Jump: 33.5
Broad Jump: 9'10"
3-cone drill: n/a
20-yard shuttle: 4.26
60-yard shuttle: n/a
Scenario: If Oakland drafts neither Crabtree nor Maclin, than Barden has to be their pick in the second round. Best all-around receiver in the draft in my honest opinion.
-Ron Brace, 6-3; 330 lbs., DT, Boston College-
Brace isn't a statistically impressive player with only 54 tackles, 18.5 of those for loss and only 5.5 sacks in two years. However, there's no denying that a 330 lbs, he'd be good for the NT Oakland's looking for. Only 5 pounds lighter than Raji and one inch taller, the two are nearly identical in every aspect. If Oakland's willing to pass on Raji in the first, they can get a DT extremely close to the same talent level in the second. Thus leaving them to get someone like Crabtree or Orakpo in the first.
40-yard dash: 5.50
Bench Press: 32 reps
Vertical Jump: 28
Broad Jump: 6'3"
3-cone drill: 4.73
20-yard shuttle: 8.15
60-yard shuttle: n/a
Scenario: If Oakland doesn't draft Raji in the first, look for them to pick up Brace in the second. If they selected a DE like Orkapo, Brace's chances drop considerably and there's still the chance Oakland might wait for someone like Terrance Taylor or Sen' Derrick Marks.
Ron Brace vs. Vandy highlights 08
-Brian Robiskie, 6-3; 209 lbs., WR, Ohio State-
via media.ohio.com
Robiskie brings an intriguing possession receiver that Oakland should take a good hard look at. 127 career receptions speaks for his ability to catch the pigskin, especially since Ohio State liked to run the ball. Despite a bad 40 combine time, Robiskie does have good speed for a possession guy. Amazing leaping ability to match his size. He likes to go up for the tough grab and does this well in traffic. Can take a hit and still hold on to the ball. He'll have some trouble separating from the faster CB in the league, but he has the moves to break free against more zone type corners. He's an intriguing prospect who I wouldn't mind seeing develop with the Oakland Raiders. other stats: 24 career touchdowns and 1,866 receiving yards. Though his best season was his junior year.
40-yard dash: 4.59
Bench Press: n/a
Vertical Jump: 37.5
Broad jump: n/a
3-cone drill: 6.72
20-yard shuttle: 4.19
60-yard shuttle: n/a
Scenario: If Oakland doesn't draft a receiver in the first, look for Robiskie and Barden to be the top two receiver options in the second round.
Robiskie Highlights, sorry for awful music
-Connor Barwin, 6-3; 253 lbs., DE, Cincinnati-
TE turned DE, sounds familiar don't it? Barwin is an incredible athlete who racked up 15.5 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, and 7 passes defensed in one season at DE! Just the kind of athlete the Oakland Raiders crave. Good size and amazing speed for a DE with the second best 40-time for a DE. He was even fast for a TE when he played the position. Very good against both the pass and the run, a combo that I've repeatedly stated is lost in this year's draft. He's been compared to Mike Vrabel, in that he can be a goal line offense threat, and great off the edge on defense. Can also play OLB in both 3-4 and 4-3 sets. Plus, check out that amazing vertical leap.
40-yard dash: 4.66
Bench Press: 21 reps
Vertical Jump: 40.5
Broad Jump: 10'8"
3-cone drill: 6.87
20-yard shuttle: 4.18
60-yard shuttle: n/a
Scenario: If Oakland doesn't take a DE in the first and Gilbert is gone, then Barwin's going to be very hard to pass up on. Even if Gilbert's there, it'll be tough to choose between the two.
-Michael Johnson, 6-7; 260 lbs., DE, Georgia Tech-
via chi-ball.com
When I saw this guy was 6-7, I had to check to make sure it wasn't a typo. It wasn't. This dude is huge. Johnson racked up 17.5 TFL and 9 sacks last year. Many questioned his pass rush skills before last year, but now it's clear he's both a good run stopper and pass rusher. His play is rather inconsistent at times. Throw in a 38.5 inch vertical with that 6-7 frame and Johnson's a freak of nature. GT must like tall guys who can leap tall buildings with a single bound. He might struggle with some of the bigger OT's in the league but will still be a force. Fast, strong, and amazing size=good DE.
40-yard dash: 4.75
Bench Press: 28 reps
Vertical Jump: 38.5
Broad Jump: 10'8"
3-cone drill: 7.42
20-yard shuttle: 4.37
60-yard shuttle: n/a
Scenario: See Gilbert and Barwin. Some say that Johnson might be a first rounder though.
-Evander Hood, 6-3; 300 lbs., DT, Missouri-
Hood is a big DT who consistently gets penetration. Had 49 tackles, 8 TFL, and 5 sacks. One of the strongest DT's in the draft. He's not overly athletic like some of the other DT's in the draft. However, he's incredibly quick off the snap and has a good motor often bowling over the opposing guard or center. Draws double teams but excels despite the extra blocker. Lacks technique and doesn't disengage very well, but then again he doesn't really ever need to.
40-yard dash: 4.97
Bench Press: 34 reps
Vertical Jump: 33
Broad Jump: 9'0"
3-cone drill: 7.50
20-yard shuttle: 4.55
60-yard shuttle: n/a
Scenario: If Raji isn't picked, it'll between Hood and Brace as to who the second round DT will be. Both are very good and will be very hard to pick between.
Thoughts?

idk
i’m mainly concerned with our first round choice if Crabtree is gone when its our turn, who are we gonna draft?… Jeremy Maclin?. i Like Percy Harvin personally he has serious speed and can line up anywhere even come out of the back field.

yeah but he's not worth the #7 pick
too injury prone and doesn’t consistently catch the ball. Oakland needs a possession receiver, not another speedy guy. We already have two of those in Schilens and higgins. We need somebody who consistently makes catches and makes catches in traffic. So far the only player that meets that is miller.

+1
It’s time that Gaysassin get’s kick outta here. It’s cool if we’re gonna trash talk, but this sh** is spam, and is not needed. I actually prefer the guys in Mile High Report coming in here and talking sensible football with us, while trash talking with facts.

i like Ron Brace and Ziggy Hood
saw them both at the UUSB practice doing 1 on 1 drill(on tv) and and Brace couldn’t be stoped and he was going up against all americans Alex Mack(cal) and Max Unger. also Ziggy Hood has the devestating Dwight Freeney spin move.

I know, it's tough to pick one of the two
but if that situation arises for Oakland it might not be so hard. Some mocks have Hood going in the late first. I used to be more for Brace but now I prefer Hood.

I like Defense with our first pick
Then we can go Ramses Barden in the second for our need at our WR for Jamarcus.

same here
but only if that D pick is orakpo, sorry but I’d still rather have Crabtree than Raji. Though admittedly I don’t hate Raji as much I used to

Dude has a talent that is hard to teach. Timing. He has great timing and speed and strength to back it up.

2nd round
If we go with Orakpo in 1, go with Brace (if there) or Hood
If BJ Raji in 1 then Gilbert in 2,
If Crabtree,or any WR in 1 then Brace, Hood, or Gilbert in 2

KA1Z, from the power bestowed on me... I rec you!
Dude, great post (just reiterating what Rayder K said), but I would think that it would go both ways
If we go offense in first (Crabtree, DHB, Maclin), we go defense in second (Johnson, Gilbert, Brace)
If we go defense in first (Raji, Orakpo, etc.), we go offense in second (Robiskie, Barden)
I’m personally leaning on the first- with going offense then defense. I like Michael Johnson, the dude is a beast!

my problem with Johnson
He’s really inconsistent. If you watch the highlights, he has a lot of trouble disengaging from the blocker. Unless he outmaneuvers the O-Lineman within a few tenths of a second of engaging him, he’s pretty much stuck. His speed and size does allow him to be able to do this though, just not consistently.

He's definatly unpolished
but learning from Burgess, I belive he will be kickin ass in 2010
He reminds me a little of Jason Taylor.

man it is still way to early to be figuring out what’s gonna happen in this years draft. there’s so much talk going on with the giants trying to trade for Edwards and also with all the talk of Boldin possibly going to philly. depending on what happens with those two receivers could really shake up the draft. if philly doesn’t get trade for Boldin, they are gonna want to get a wr and with 12 picks in the draft this year, it’s not crazy to think they could be willing to trade their 2 first round picks.
either way we need to use our early picks on defense. if we keep our #7, i think we should get Raji or Orakpo. if we can get the trade with philly for their 2 picks we can grab up Rey Maualuga @ 21 and Ziggy Hood @ 28. we could still get johnson in the second round and then get Barden in the third. He’s gonna still be there when we want him.
This way we get some serious help on the D line cuz as we know, we weren’t the greatest against the run. We get a leader and an animal at LB in our own Rey. and we get the hands receiver we need to build the confidence in JaRuss with Barden.
Defense is what wins super bowls. we’ve seen it time and time again. The AFC West is weak around us and THIS IS OUR YEAR TO RECLAIM WHAT IS RIGHTFULLY OURZZZZZ!!!!

Don't forget O-line
Though I think we should be focusing on D in the first and maybe even the second, Cable will probably pick up an O-lineman with one of the first two picks.
Also, maybe someone could shed some light on this, I thought Barden was going to be available in the third. Has his stock risen that much to be taken in the 2nd? I like him and would love to have him but i thought he was going to be available in the third.
Just HIT somebody.

a lot of draft experts
have him now as a mid to late second. It’s definitely worth reaching a little bit for him though.

P.S.
I can’t see us taking an O-Lineman in the first two rounds. As it stands our primary needs are WR, LB, S, DT, DE, and OT. As it stands, that’s six needs and only 5 picks. Unless Al trades for a pick, we can’t address them all. We then have to focus on the biggest needs. With there being four solid players at OT, I don’t think it’s too big of a need. If we had one more pick I would agree that we have to take an OT, but as it stands we don’t.

Don't be too surprised
that if Crabtree is not there at 7 and there is no trade-down offer, that the Raiders draft Andre Smith.
