KA1Z3R's Ramblings: My Last Draft Thoughts
Well we're officially in the month of the almighty draft and I thought I should give my last two bits on some draft stuff. Keep in mind, I'm pretty much just going to ramble on so forgive me for the disorganization.
-Draft Needs-
Going into the offseason our needs were WR, OT, C, DT, DE, and LB. Through smart offseason moves, that list has now shrunk to WR, D-Line, LB, and S. Satele and the new OT's have rid us of O-Line needs (though some guard depth would be nice) The release of Wilson made an already lacking position of S an official need. So let's see, 5 draft picks, 5 needs (D-Line consists of DT and DE so that's two) Now where wil we draft what, and who will we draft?
I would like to remark on two draft conundrums. What LB spot do we really need? Do we keep Morrison in the middle and draft an outside man? Or do we move Morrison to his natural OLB position and get an actual MLB? This problem could have been solved by signing FA Angelo Crowell who plays both OLB and MLB very well. But I'm talking draft and not FA. Personally I think it has to be draft a middle guy and move Morrison. Either way we need a LB.
The other conundrum, what type of safety are we going to look for? Are we going to have Huff play SS or FS, will Huff even start, will we instead start Branch or Eugene, and if Branch, at what position? I hope Oakland has figured that out. I think that Branch should be starting at FS and we should be trying to find an SS. I understand Huff at SS, but he wasn't good there either. Both of the aforementioned conundrums need to be sorted out before Oakland starts drafting.
-How I think Oakland's Draft Will Go Down-
There's a lot of draft speculation around here and there's pretty much four distinct "parties" for what we should do with our first round pick. There's the Crabtree Party, the Raji Party, the Orakpo Party, and the Trade Down Party. I fall under no real party as I believe that if neither Orakpo nor Crabtree is available when we pick, we must trade down for extra picks. Raji's not a very solid pick in my mind, and thus not worth our #7 pick. Orakpo is an every-down DE, which means a run-stopper other than Richardson and a pass rusher other than Burgess and Scott. Chances are Burgess is out after this year and will most likely get injured this year. We need our DE of the future. Enter Orakpo.
I also agree with the Crabtree Party (officially headed by posey) that we need a true #1 receiver. Now while I don't want Crabtree, I must express why he's one of my three primary options. He's arguably got the best hands in the draft (i personally think nicks does but I'm trying not to input much of my own opinions) and is also a speedy guy. That's a combination that Oakland doesn't possess. He also possesses a lot of moves to turn a five-yard catch, into a 30-yard catch-and-run. However, he is banged up right now and we don't know if that will affect his abilities or not.
Then there's the Trade Down Party. I like this, especially if the Eagles will comply. Admittedly a long-shot, but moving into the the late first and getting a couple seconds sounds like something a team like New England would be interested in. Pick up Heyward-Bey, maybe Laurinitis, or even someone like Michael Johnson or Robert Ayers. Then there's the second round where we could get a solid DT. Trading down sounds very good to me as we're getting short on draft picks and have a lot of question marks on the team.
Now what do I think will happen? I see two possibilities which revolve around the Browns. Will they draft Crabtree, or Orakpo? You have to remember that their WR corps are now really weak. All they have left is Edwards and Cribbs, and Edwards is on the trading block. How long till he's gone? No more Jurevicious (or however you spell it), no more Stallworth, and possibly no more Edwards. That leaves Quinn/Anderson with no targets (especially with Winslow gone). So Crabtree is just as much an option as Orakpo. Whoever they don't take will fall to Oakland. Whoever that is, Al will most certainly draft him.
Personally, I see us drafting Crabtree which does anger me slightly. But not too bad as he does give our already decent offense yet another playmaker.
As for the rest of the draft? In the second Oakland will take a DT, no matter who we draft in the first. Look for Brace or Hood to be called up. Both are big run stoppers and will most likely start in Oakland this year. However, two second round wild cards that would please me are Jarron Gilbert and Paul Kruger. Great pass rushers at DE with Gilbert also being a quality run stopper. Both could play full-time and would be very nice pickups by Oakland. Final verdict on Round 2: DT Evander Hood
The third round is where things get tricky. Do we try to reach for Brinkley, draft Vaughn for our gap at S, because I picked Hood in the second; does Oakland go after Sidbury, or will we draft an unknown? I think Oakland's going to try to round off the secondary with a non-question mark player in Chip Vaughn. FS is a big question mark and I think Oakland will try to make SS less of a question mark. though I'd rather we draft Bruton in the fourth, I think that Al's gotta be drooling over a physical specimen like Vaughn. However, don't count out Brinkley. A guy with that kind of size and strength is worth reaching for and Al knows that. Final Verdict: S Chip Vaughn.
To the fourth round we go. We pick pretty late here so it's hard to tell who will fall this far. Will Johnson at DE is a name that interests me. A big Michigan man who has the size to play either DT or a big DE is intriguing. Al loves versatility and might find him a good pick. I know I do. This guy's a run stopping freak. He also the last quality DE left at this point. However there's also two great MLB in Nick Reed and Jason Phillips. Both are good in the run game, especially Phillips. After all, TCU thrived on it's run D. They were the Steelers of college football last year. Both could fall this far and both raise my interests. Personally, this round is practically impossible to pick, but I have to say that Al's too confident in his DE's and is looking to bolster the middle of the defense to help the run D. Final Verdict: LB Jason Phillips
Now we go clear to the seventh. Al's either going to look for S depth, a DE sleeper, or OG depth. The only DE I could find that might fall that far is Maurice evans, admittedly this because he's last one Scout.com's list of top-30 DE's. So it's very uncertain. I do strongly believe that Oakland will try for a sleeper DE to possibly push Gunheim to earn a roster spot. Final Verdict: Best DE.
-Final Notes-
This was not a dream draft, but what I actually think will happen. I didn't add any possible player-for-picks trades, but I do think one will happen. I just have a gut feeling about it. I'm thinking one of our DT's (hopefully Sands), Huff/Eugene, and or Fargas/Bush will be traded for a pick. Al's probably going to shoot for a fourth or third-round pick. We might even see our late fourth bundled with a player to try to get a late third. Hard to tell, but I strongly believe Oakland will trade a player(s) for a pick.
Peace and good night all (almost 10:00 here)

Good Write Up
I have this speculation. I don’t think Mr.Davis will draft Vaughn. I had this feeling because I think Brinkley will be the choice in the third round or fourth. I have a feeling he still believes in Huff, just like me. Also, don’t think Mr.Davis is not interested in either Roy Williams or Mike Brown. Look for them to come here.
At DE, I think we should look forward to drafting Jarron Gilbert. He has tremendous potential and his presence won’t really take anything away from the individuals already on the team
B.J Raji is my favorite pick, but the Marijuana deal is pissing me off. Why Raji, Why? Get off the dumb drugs. You are about to enter a dream scenario for an individual and you mess around with a gift from god? How do you feel Darthdavis?
Michael Crabtree sounds very intriguing now. He has great character, won’t hurt the team, and will be a supreme target. Mad props to Posey for sticking with his man.

Good Post
More and more I believe that Orakpo will be the pick.

[Orakpo lights up Graham Harrell]
Whereas a few weeks ago many of us thought that both Stafford and Sanchez would fall out of the Top 7, with their respective workouts they both may have solidified Top 5 picks between Detroit and Seattle, or at the very least Stafford locked up his #1 overall selection. This likely means that St. Louis takes their pick of J. Smith or Monroe, KC takes Curry, Seattle takes either Sanchez or the remaining between J. Smith and Monroe. Cincinnati is a wild card here, but the general belief is that they’ll take A. Smith or Raji. This scenario makes us choose between Orakpo and Maclin, which makes it an easy choice in my opinion. Maclin is a talented player, but the WR position is fairly deep in this draft, Orakpo grades out higher overall than Maclin in most mocks I’ve seen, and the DE position has more drop off after Orakpo.
If the Raiders do end up taking Orakpo with the 7th pick, they will most likely target a WR in the 2nd round. Unless there is a run on WRs late in the first round I would expect guys like Brian Robiskie, Derrick Williams (check Pro Day stats, not Combine stats), and possibly Kenny Britt to be there at the top of the second round. The Raiders have also shown a lot of interest in Cal Poly WR Ramses Barden, but they may have to reach to get him, as he may not fall all the way through the 2nd round into the 3rd. If they don’t like what’s available in the way of WRs, the Raiders could go DL, OL, or S, depending on who’s still available.
The 3rd round pick is reserved for the defensive back 7, either LB or S. Chip Vaughn is probably my pick here, as he has the skill set the Raiders obviously look for and fills a bigger need than LB, despite my man-crush for Jasper Brinkley (maybe he falls to the 4th?)
4th round I see reserved for the D-line, and probably DT. A big and athletic NT like Sammie Lee Hill would be fantastic here to help the DT rotation.
Dream Drafts:
Michael Crabtree, Ron Brace, Chip Vaughn, Lawrence Sidbury
Brian Orakpo, Brian Robiskie, Chip Vaughn, Sammie Lee Hill
I still love Jasper Brinkley

I Think RAK
Will be so great that other talents on the team will not get their fair share of playtime. Raji, even though he is a smoker, will provide those talented individuals already on the team their share of time, while getting his fair share.
Also, Crabtree would do the same. I think we should just go ahead and draft Crabtree.

yuo forgot Cleveland's pick
which like i said, is looking more and more like it might be Crabtree. If they do manage to trade Edwards, then I’ll be 100% sure of it.

At this point I’m almost assuming that Cleveland takes Crabtree, so you can pencil that one in as well. The Giants and Browns may heat up talks again after the Giants released Burress.
Dream Drafts:
Michael Crabtree, Ron Brace, Chip Vaughn, Lawrence Sidbury
Brian Orakpo, Brian Robiskie, Chip Vaughn, Sammie Lee Hill

true
but I think (as evidenced by the Jurevicius release, trade of Winslow, and possible trade of Edwards) that Cleveland wants to bring in young talent. You know, start fresh. Get talent that Quinn can grow along with.

haha
“even though he is a smoker”. I was going on here to post something about his marijuana use. I dont think its an issue as long as he keeps his toking to the offseason. Sapp used to smoke and he had a great career. Plenty of athletes do. Id still be happy to have him even as this news comes out.
+1
Now that Jay cutler is off the market there is no way the Lions Pass up on Stafford now, that should lock up Rak or Crabs at #7 (i am praying Its Rak) . good shit kaiser i idont agree with everything but you at least put together a nice piece the way a fan post should be drawn up big props.
The Autumn wind is a Raider
Pillaging just for fun
He’ll knock you ’round and upside down
And laugh when he’s conquered and won.
Wow, that really screwed up my draft senerio
I was hoping that Stafford would be there at # 7 so we could trade down with SF. Trade with San Francico in first(we get SF 3rd round pick). at no.10 we take Brian Cushing, USC
But now the Lions will be on Stafford like a fresh piece of meat.
If Crabs is there at #7 it will be a blessing, cause he’s going to be pretty good trade bait at #7(pay scale vs #1or #2).
"May the wind be at our back, here comes the Silver and Black "
really? Thats pretty good value.
You think we could just keep “barganing” our way down and out of the first round?
Think of all the 2nd, 3rd,4th, and 5th round draft picks we could pick up!
I know it doesent work that way, and they probably have restrictions too, but it was fun thinking about it
"May the wind be at our back, here comes the Silver and Black "
I really have to disagree about RAK
Even though I think he is a great prospect and tremendous talent, he was a liability and has been ineffective at Run D. I will try and find where a found that but it seems to be pretty consistent as in not only one source. And then there is Trevor Scott who is just straight oozing with potential at the RE position if he can come around to a full time starter he will ride the pine as a back up. But then again maybe having Scott coming in for him on situational passing downs and Richardson starting over Burgess (who should be a situational pass rusher as well) is really the best move.
I really don’t think Ziggy Hood will be there at #40 and Ron Brace is not second round material, I think drafting him would be real stupid as him and Sands are identical and I don’t see much upside out of Brace outside of his current skill set and ability.
Your first 2 I would change, I would of course diagree with you about Raji but I really really am hoping we trade down. Cable has said that they are trying or would like to acquire more picks.
I love how you mentioned Lauranitis he would be killer in Silver and Black! But why not take Rey Rey at #7? I don’t buy the analysts hate on the guy, I see him as a career probowl guy, with versatility and tenacity. I think he would be an excellent pick if this was in fact what the Nation was planning on doing. But howeverI don’t think it is, I think they are going to keep Morrison inside and have Brown and Williams scrap over SLB. SLB is not that important for our team sadly. It just isn’t so I can agree with your late round MLB, I would prefer Scott McKillop but that is one way to make the change rather cost effectively given the importance of the position. But I still think things are gonna stay with Morrison inside.
Now this leads me to believe that if they want the Run D improved they must be looking at Jarron Gilbert for LDE. The ability of Richardson and Scott as a formidable tandem should be echoed on the left side in just the opposite manner.
I think Oher and Smith are going to get a lot more attention then people realize as it is a rare opportunity to have too much talent on the OL. I still thin Raji is the best choice for a pick, however I would rather trade down, followed by Smith then Oher.
I really think there is gonna be a lot of movement by the Raiders come draft day, don’t be suprised is all I am saying. I would really like to see #7 and #40 both be used to acquire more draft picks in trade downs, not far or long distance ones but sliding back 10-15 picks to add 1 2nd and 1 3rd.

I was considering Rey
but as a #7 pic, it seems unlikely. We have far bigger needs and i mainly mentioned the three parties on here as to who to draft.
I’m actually reconsidering Orakpo. You have to remember Everette Brown. Many consider him the top DE and with good reason. He’s basically Orakpo but not as injury troubled.
I think Orakpo is fairly solid in the run game. I watched a few Texas games and he was fine to me. He’s a better run guy than Burgess or Scott and a better pass rusher. Plus you also have to remember the big D word when it comes to draft prospects. Development. We have a very talented D-Line coach in Board who turned Rocky Bernard into a great run stopper and Tapp into a quality pass rusher.
