Mike Mitchell May Be JUST What The Doctor Ordered

Like many of you, I am a bit flabbergasted and I am have been thinking that the Raiders made terrible decisions all day.

First, they didn't trade down and get more picks in the first, then they chose a WR that was rated in the lower 1/3 of the draft with the 7 pick.

Next, they traded down and watched Conner Barwin pass by. Don't get me wrong, another 3rd and a 6th for 7 spaces was a nice move, that could mean that if we want Follett, he could probably fall into our laps.

I thought that perhaps the Raiders would select Michael Johnson or a solid O-Lineman so you can imagine that when they announced Michael Mitchell as their choice I was ticked...

Now that I've cooled down a bit and read this:

my dad and I would watch old films of Jack Tatum and Ronnie Lott and he’d say, that's how you play football. So from a young age, I knew it was about hitting and being physical. I definitely model myself after those two individuals. I like to impose myself on other people. Obviously, I think I'm a good guy in coverage, I can get interceptions and return the ball when I can, but if there's an opportunity, I usually take my shots, but if I get a shot to hit you, then I'm going to try and knock the person out.

I am getting excited about the possibility that Al Davis may have just snagged the two best players at their positions in this draft.

Have you cooled down yet?

Cable and Davis Pissing Off BPA Guys

We’re finally understanding what Coach Cable’s draft “plan” is for 2009. Cable and the rest of the personnel development and scout staff identified positions of need for the Raiders, then built positional ranking boards for these positions based on a number of factors – one important one being perceived system fit. Cable noted his preference for DHB for several reasons, including familiarity with a pro-style offense, speed and vertical threat, and excellent route-running (first I’d heard of that one). Cable, Davis, and the rest of the Raiders scouting team obviously weren’t sold that guys like Crabtree and Maclin would transition as well into the NFL as DHB would, and chose to take him with the 7th pick. I’m not displeased with the pick, but there may have been an opportunity to trade down a few spots to let someone take Crabtree.

The same analysis applies to Mike Mitchell – the Raiders identified safety as a position of need, and after doing their homework decided that Mitchell provided the skill set and intangibles best suited for being a Raider, over guys we considered such as Moore, Vaughn, etc. Cable used the word “ferocious” during an interview today, which definitely excites me. Hindsight also provides relief knowing the Bears were also targeting Mitchell in the 2nd round, so we can somewhat put that “reach” talk to bed.

I anticipate seeing more of the same from the Raiders on Day 2. With a few more picks to work with the Raiders will continue to identify position needs and take the player they think is best (not the ones Kiper, McShay, or Mayock think is best) and pick them without apology. Position needs still include DL, LB, and OL. Guys like Jarron Gilbert, Lawrence Sidbury, almost all of the 2nd tier DTs, Jasper Brinkley, etc. are still on the board.

Geez, everyone pans these draft “experts” for lacking hindsight, but we all cringe when our team goes out of that mainstream thinking. Let’s see what the product on the field is before we start screaming about the sky falling.

Most Likely Draft: I don't even know anymore.

you my friend

have made several great points. why do we praise kiper, mcshay and all of them?

lets keep in mind kiper was the same guy that said david carr and joey harrington were CANT MISS prospects. He even went as far as saying they would be in the hall of fame…

oh and lets not forget he said Mike Williams would be a hall of famer.

Ive been sold on Mitchell the guys a beast i saw the video and it excited me. DHB has all the skill set…lets just hope he continues to work hard and reaches that potential!!

Great job Live Adam and Robby

We got a big fast reciever, and a big time hitter, to fill our two glaring needs.

Watched Mitchell on U-Tube

WOW! The kid may be for real! I t would be nice to have some heat back there! Receivers heads on a swivel out of fear…. It has been far to long since teams feared the Raiders would be nice if that could happen again!

the more i hear and read

The happier I get with the picks. They both seem like great kids with great work ethic’s who play the game the raider way. As cable said they picked the players they felt fit what they wanted not just drafting the next highest consensus rated body on the line. I think this makes perfect sense and i prefer this instead of getting a player of questionable character like Crabtree.
And look at the bright side now wen have a new fresh reason to hate the fourty whiners :)

I’m just saying that we could have had Mitchell at 216th overall instead of 47th. It was a terrible pick in my opinion.

well

I’m reading all over the place that the bears were ready to take him at 49 so he would have been well gone by 216.

by Ozraider on Apr 26, 2009 12:54 AM PDT up reply actions

dont go based on what

kiper says…he insists that mitchell woulda been there late in the draft but from everything ive heard the bears were ready to take him…if ne thing you could tell kiper had no idea who mitchell was…he didnt look into it therefore he couldnt make a judgment on it. i watched the whole draft he seemed all confused

And also

doesn’t help that they just love jumping all over Big Al at anything. The fact that the may or may not have reached for certain players at least shows they got the players they wanted and if it had have been any other team it wouldnt be as anywhere near as big a deal.
I would like to hear what a real NFL personal guy or GM has to say about these picks because Kiper and McShay are just muppets.

by Ozraider on Apr 26, 2009 2:30 AM PDT up reply actions

Yes

people love to jump on Al, but this is the exact reason, Even if he knows best there are other teams and scenarios to consider, you dont work in a bubble, drop down and get more picks, stop being a stuborrn old man about who u think can and can’t play in this league.

by nateroddick20 on Apr 26, 2009 4:10 AM PDT up reply actions

Does anybody

really know where these guys were rated on others teams draft boards, obviously crabtree was not as high as everyone thought with multiple teams with a wide reciever needs passing and nobody trading up to get him and as cable said his numbers are heavily inflated by the system he played in and numbers should not be the be all and end all of scouting (was colt brennan the best quarterback last year?).
Also after Sanchez was gone i dont think anybody was left that another team would have been desperate enough for to trade up for – maybe there was no trade available to Al.
I think its funny how angry the ‘experts’ are about these picks obviously they would rather trash the raiders than admit they may have dropped the ball on scouting Mitchell just like the major colleges did. His tape looks amazing, I have a good feeling about both of these guys.

Here’s hoping we get Brinkley of Johnson with our next pick!

we reached for these picks like

how Al davis reached into my wallet for renewal

I love it.....

Mayock all but apologized to the Raiders for his comments yesterday about the Mitchell pick, after hearing that the Bears were prepared to pick him at 49. Fact is, Mayock, Kiper, and McShay don’t want to be exposed as “missing one” like this. They’ve never seen tape on the guy! This guy is not just another “height, weight, speed” specimen. He truly seems to have strong instincts and cornerback skills in a strong safety’s body. And he’s a killer…..which any true Raider fan loves.
I too wish the Raiders would get more “value” from their picks at times. However, I applaud them for their conviction with these picks. These two players have capabilities that other players at their positions in this draft just don’t have. They both fit what the Raiders (try to) do, could have immediate impact, and all indications are that they are of good character. I like what we’ve done. If we can shore up the d-line and linebacker positions, this could be a strong draft for the Raiders.

by dforce on Apr 26, 2009 9:16 AM PDT reply actions

love it

the only thing i could have hoped for is that the raiders wouldnt have traded with the pats and taken ron brace. I think DHB is exactly what our offense needs. I think Maclin has a bit more potential to be a better deep threat wideout but i think coming from a pro offense DHB is going to have a much more immediate impact in the nfl. Mitchell appears to be a straight beast plus hes got a chip on his shoulder and hes a great story.
More importantly i feel like this draft has shown that cable is the coach weve been looking for. Most importantly he believes in Al’s philosophy and keeping on Al’s good side is half of the job in Oakland. Furthermore Cable doesnt just give in to the norm and take the player hes expected too. For such a weak draft the only two teams that are drafting based on the players they’ve identified as the ones they want are the Raiders and the Patriots and when there isnt anyone they want they trade out of that spot and drafting like the Patriots is obviously a good thing

by mttddd on Apr 26, 2009 10:48 AM PDT reply actions

I don't understand why people

keep quoting or listening to Kiper/McShay. Not only was Chicago going to draft Mitchell at 49, the Cowboys had him pegged at 50 and traded out when the Raiders took him, yet all day today there is Kiper saying that Mitchell could have been picked up as an undrafted free agent, or later in the 6th or 7th round. The same with Heyward-Bey, Kiper mumbling that he would have been there at 30. The Giants were trying to trade down to get Heyward-Bey over Crabtree but when the Raiders picked him it was over.

Mel Kiper and Mayock NEED

to get a new job or retire
they suck at judging picks
None of the Mock Draft was right
and all of their “Can’t MIss” picks were all bust

i think its funny that

Whenever the draft doesn’t work out like they predict they automatically go into over defensive mode and call the teams stupid. Well the media’s favourite ‘sleeper’ Michael Johnson went in the late rounds the and a guy that you never heard of went in the second round and by all account the raiders ‘stole’ him in front of a whole gang of teams.
It just goes to show that these guys only go by what crap is fed to them by the teams and they do not have any real opinions of their own on players or do any actual scouting.
