Oakland Raiders Third Round Selection: DE - Matt Shaughnessy - Wisconsin

From Football Toolbox:

Matt Shaughnessy is the type of player that every coach loves to have on their team. He's not only the hardest worker, he's also extremely talented. Shaughnessy has been incredibly productive during his career at Wisconsin, after taking over a starting role as a sophomore. He's another one of the new breed of college defensive ends. Shaughnessy is small, quick, and hard for big tackles to block. He seems to always be in the backfield disrupting plays, having recorded 33.5 tackles for loss and 11.5 sacks in his first three seasons. Shaughnessy might need to add a little bulk to play every down in the NFL. He plays at 253 pounds right now, and if it doesn't affect his speed, could stand to gain 15 to 20 pounds. He is very alert, and makes all the little plays that make a defense great. Shaughnessy is excellent at using his 6'6" frame to bat balls down at the line of scrimmage. He broke up 9 pass attempts during his career when asked to drop into coverage. Shaughnessy had a slow season in 2008, finishing with only 40 tackles, 8 tackles for loss, and 4 sacks. The Badger senior is probably a third round prospect at this point in time. However, if Shaughnessy can have a productive off season and run a good time at the NFL Combine, he could go as high as the middle of the second round.

There definately seems to be a pattern

emerging with all of these guys we have drafted being extremely hard working and with great character.
The players we have drafted seem like the right type of guys to build with.

After watching the Mitchell Video I can see our secondary being MUCH better this year. MUCH!!!

But when they start scheming us the way these guys did, and we weren't particularly ready for it, anything can happen."

Yeah

He looks like an absolute beast who hits like a truck with incredible speed and playmaking ability in coverage and plays great up in the box. I know youtube videos can be decieving but his is one of the most impressive packages ive ever come across its brilliant play after brilliant play – All killer no filler.

they could've picked...

Lawrence Sidbury Jr.
or they could’ve traded Darrius Heyward-Bey to Chicago for Jarron Gilbert and then just draft Ramses Barden or Mike Thomas with the pick

Other Scouting Report

DraftCountdown

Strengths:
Very good size with long arms the frame to add more weight…Good strength and power…Gets a nice push as a bull rusher…Uses his hands well to get off blocks…Comfortable in space…Excellent motor…Does a terrific job in pursuit..Quick…Nice instincts and awareness…Versatile.

Weaknesses:
Does not always use proper leverage…Just average timed speed and isn’t very explosive…Needs to develop more pass rush moves…Not stout at the point…Struggles in coverage…Some durability concerns.

Notes:
A four-year starter in the Big Ten…Grandfather, James Shaughnessy, played football at Arnold College…1st Team Freshman All-American in 2005…2nd Team All-Big Ten in 2006 and 2007…Tore his ACL in 2005…Broke his right fibula in the Spring of 2008…Could also project to outside linebacker and has some experience inside at defensive tackle…‘Tweener who isn’t the top pass rusher you look for in a right end or the stout run defender you want in a left end…Backup material.

Sounds like he needs to work on his pass rush repertoire, but otherwise sounds a bit like Michael Johnson without the motor issues. Raiders must not have thought Sidbury could handle the run.

Most Likely Draft: I don't even know anymore.
