Sleeper Pick No More, Ramses Oakland Bound in 2nd Round.

Now more than anything i hope we get Orakpo at #7 cuz you can bet the farm Raiders are getting Ramses at #40nif there is no crabs availiable. finally i have the back up of Bill williamson  an AFC West Columnist for ESPN Stating in his Blog that ,

"The Oakland Raiders are closely studying Cal Poly receiver Ramses Barden. He will likely be a second-round pick. If the Raiders don't take a receiver in the first round, he could be the target with their second pick. Barden has been compared to Keyshawn Johnson".

Here is the article i found through the link in his blog:

Will Raiders crown Ramses?
A large contingent of Raiders officials, including at least three scouts, attended USC's much-anticipated (and attended) Pro Day on Wednesday. They very well may have been paying as much attention to the non-Trojan on site as anyone from USC itself.

Cal Poly wide receiver Ramses Barden, who is training in Southern California, swung by to be one of the receivers to run routes during quarterback Mark Sanchez's passing drills. As it turns out, the Raiders are huge on the 6-foot-6 receiver from John Madden U and could take him with their second-round pick in the April 25-26 draft.

"Gotta help him out, give him some moral support, a high-five after a nice throw," Barden said by phone about teaming up with Sanchez in front of the scouts.

Barden wanted to take part in the actual workouts but the Pac-10 did not allow it. He worked out in front of scouts two weeks ago at the San Jose State Pro Day, very likely cementing his place as a second-round pick -- and certainly no later than the third round -- with a 4.48 time in the 40.

Barden had a private interview with the Raiders at his Pro Day workout. He declined to give details, but The Chronicle has confirmed he has been in contact with Raiders wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal several times now.

The Raiders also recently contacted his college coach to find out more about the small-school standout. They interviewed him at the Senior Bowl. They interviewed him at the NFL Combine. A far as due diligence goes, they're all over it.

If they want Barden, they'll most likely have to use their eighth overall pick of the second round. The only way they do that is if they don't draft a wide receiver like Texas Tech's Michael Crabtree or Missouri's Jeremy Maclin in the first round.

(Maybe they call them mock drafts so people like me can be mocked if we guess wrong, huh?)

They need a big receiver, and Barden is certainly big at 6-foot-6. He's 229 pounds with room to muscle up. He set an NCAA record with 20 straight games with a touchdown catch. He reminds some of two other tall AFC West receivers: Broncos Pro Bowler Brandon Marshall and the Chargers' Vincent Jackson.

They could hope Barden makes it to the third, but this is a kid who's interviewed with Bill Parcells of the Dolphins. He's not exactly a secret anymore.

Barden did say this about the Raiders and quarterback JaMarcus Russell:

"He can make all the throws. He's a talented guy, you know? I'd love to be part of any team I can help turn around."

** Speaking of wide receivers, the Raiders had a formal interview with Penn State wide receiver Derrick Williams at the Combine, according to Scout.com.

So yeah, wide receiver is clearly a priority, even with the return of Chaz Schilens, Johnnie Lee Higgins and Javon Walker. This explains why they've done nothing in free agency to replace the departed likes of Ronald Curry, Drew Carter and Ashley Lelie.

it just sucks he has gotten so much attention that we now have no choice but to take him in the 2nd. round.

I still don't buy it that he is a 2nd rounder

I think he’s there at #71. But either way if we took him at #40 I would be happy. He is the perfect target for the KING. I just hope he is good with the 70mph Fastball’s J-Russ throws. Its true he played against lesser talent, but he also had a lesser talent QB, and those redzone catches were unbelievable. He is soo much a better prospect then James Hardy of the Bills was last year.

It depends who we get first if Raji then probably Barden too but, if we draft Crabtree then we won't need him.

Brian Robiskie

I say Brian Robiskie in the second round, I believe that Brian Orakpo wil fall to us at 7 and we will take him. So by doing that we would have to take a WR in the 2nd round, which I think will be Robiskie, that is though if Hakeem Nicks is gone, because if Hakeem Nicks is there at #40 then we need to take him.

not sold...

i think we take crabtree, but in the case that he doesnt fall to us, or by some miracle he does and we pass on him…..

I am not that sold on him. All of the highlights show him one on one on a fade route. He better catch most of those as he is bigger playing against lesser opponents.

There are others where he is getting the ball on some sort of WR screen.

And there are highlights of him getting caught from behind.

There are no highlights of him catching the ball in traffic. or catching the ball, getting hit by two guys and staying on his two feet….. not like crabtree anyway.

excellent write-up

Barden is definitely a second rounder at this point. His revamped forty times combined with his amazing college numbers, size, and catching ability have made him a truly promising WR. True he’s only a mid second round guy, it’s definitely worth it to reach for him. I think he’d be a fantastic receiver for Oakland and it seems the Raiders are looking into a him a lot. Lock him up as our second round pick if we don’t draft Crabtree. I’m now almost positive he won’t be there when we pick, and even if he is, we might not draft him.

Yup

Barden is a bit of a reach at 40, but you never know if there is a run on WRs in the draft and all of a sudden Robiskie, Nicks, Britt, etc. are all gone. Then the Raiders would have to reach anyway. The way Barden has marketed himself this preseason there is no way he falls all the way to 71 – someone will pick him up in the 2nd round.

Watching that highlight reel he looks a lot like Plaxico Burress. Same height, weight, speed combo. Barden doesn’t own a gun does he?

Dream Drafts:
Michael Crabtree, Ron Brace, Chip Vaughn, Lawrence Sidbury
Brian Orakpo, Brian Robiskie, Chip Vaughn, Sammie Lee Hill
I still love Jasper Brinkley

by LiveAdam on Apr 3, 2009 4:39 PM PDT up reply actions

lol +1

you’re right, he’s eerily similar to Burress. And we all know Al loves huge, fast receivers. That’s not going to change, it’s always been his philosophy and it has and still does work. However, this time he’d be getting one with a skill set to match. He’s like Schilens but further along development-wise. I think Barden could become a big-time receiver.

100%

I think he has the built for it. I would be happier with Ramses than Crabtree to be honest.

I Think Barden will be the pick in the 2nd or 3rd.

I like to mention I still like Raji with our 1st pick. Yes, he had marijuana, but others like Cushing also tested positive for marij. I think everyone uses marij so it shouldn’t be a huge issue. B.J Raji, I hope you are the pick

Naw...

I don’t think Raji will be as good in the NFL as he was in college.
I would love Orakpo as our 1st pick.

by L.A. Raiders on Apr 3, 2009 3:51 PM PDT reply actions   1 recs

I Wouldn't like Orakpo as our first pick.

I Would like to see us ethier take Crabtree first and then grab a LB, or S with our second or Raji with our first and Barden with the second. Personally I hope we pass on Crabtree which will give us a Great asset to our D-Line and not to mention a freak of nature in Barden. How do you cover a receiver when you are 6’’1 and he is 6’’6 great advantage.

No idea

I don’t know how tis draft is going to go anymore. Some of the recent mock drafts i’ve seen on NFL network and ESPN don’t even have Orakpo or Crabtree going in the top ten. They have Heyward-Bey going to us and Maclin going to Jacksonville.

Just HIT somebody.

I Just Hope

Al doesn’ t take Heywerd-Bey. There are so many needs other than receiver and we do not have to draft WR in the first.

I Am leaning towards a WR in the First round

Even though I agree with you that WR is not our Biggest need It has been a long time since we have had the Threat of a deep pass Receiver I think that getting a WR will seriously help Russell with the pressure like how Mcfadden did as a Threat RB.

Heywerd-Bey was the fastest dude at the combine and Al Davis loves that.

But he wont take him unless there is a trade.

Bey is not good enough for the 7th pick and too good of a prospect for the second round. Personally i think heyward bey will bust.

by posey440 on Apr 4, 2009 1:00 PM PDT up reply actions

I wouldnt bet on that :)

Just a hunch, thats all I will say. Bey probably really ran a 4.25 considering the slow times everyone clocked on that strange white wraping paper. Bey is a unique physical and fast prospect. I like him and wouldn’t be too suprised. Of course I would rather trade down and take him but none the less don’t count Bey out.

I think the raiders have one need, the rest of the players we bring will be to strengthen the position.

We have no true strong safety. Receiver is not a pure need. Neither is DE. Neither is LB. And especially DT.

If we draft for pure need then we would take patrick chng or the dude from wake forest or hamlin from clemson, but we want value for our pick, so a weaker part of the team is going to be addressed. The run D is not all on the DTs as the colts have shown in the past when they had 280 pounders shut down the run. Teams shut down the run. And well rested teams shut down the run better than any other type of team. We need first downs and 3rd down stops. Enter michael crabtree or brian orakpo. Either would be great pluses to our team.

Crabtree and schilens and higgin in the slot would let us rival denver instantly for the best receivers in the afc west.

Trevor Scott and brian orakpo coming off the edge? Scary.

In all im way more hoping for crabtree in this draft but either player would be sweet. The deciding factor to our draft is going to be the browns at 5. They will get most likely either one of these players and we would get the other because the bengals would most likely take BJ raji or andre smith since they have 2 highly paid DEs and 4 receivers who are either good vets or young high draft picks.

I'd Take Crab

But not Heywerd Bey. It is sort of frightening thinking of us grabbing him. It would ruin my day.

if we traded down for him I'd be overwhlemingly delighted

Heyward-Bey’s the real deal. But at #7, no way. Especially with the possibility of us getting Orakpo growing more and more everyday.

Heywerd-Bey

is not a first round talent… especially at the #7 pick. He is even a stretch-assuming teams go WR crazy to go in the first round. By pick #40 the Raiders should have the choice of him or Barden. The Chicago/Denver trade should shake up the draft picks for sure… Look for Denver to go after a QB with their #12 pick or even trade up if possible to get either Sanchez or Safford (Detroit, San Fransico, Green Bay, and Seattle all could be looking for a new young gun). Now San Fransico is like us, only 5 picks this year and could trade down for additional selections yet I don’t think will want to pass on the Sanchez, Safford, or Crabtree if any one falls that far (to 10).
There is the possibility of Denver eyeing Oakland’s pick at 7 but I don’t think that helps our cause as I still believe our needs are in defense and either Orakpo or Raji should remain our targets first and foremost and one of which should still be on the board at #7, if both are taken, then we entertain trading down instead of Crabtree for additional picks (like Denvers #18 pick and a 5-7 round pick).
Either way, we should still be able to get a quality upgrade at WR in the second round in Barden or even Heyward-Bey

looking forward to the next 30 years of this team

I agree, but he is a 1st round talent.

He is a good enough athlete for the 1st, but i think he is way too big of a project for the raiders and is just an athlete and not a football player. He is not the type to beat the man in front of him with his breaking down of the cushion or his route deception. He is just another guy who had a big combine and made a couple plays in college. He is a tall percy harvin to me, who also will probably bust.
