Around SBN: The Worst Team Ever Projected?

Now this is getting ridiculous...

Are you all nuts? I understand you support your team, just like I do, but stop comvincing yourself that Bey was the right pick. Before that draft, NOBODY on this site wanted Darrius Heyward Bey, and everyone that wanted a receiver said Crabtree. Now i'm reading all this stuff of how Bey was the right choice and Crabtree is a guaranteed bust. This is stupidity.

Star-divide

The fact is, Crabtree would have been the better pick. He doesn't have great speed... Ya well Larry Fitzgerald, Jerry Rice, Steve Largent, etc. were all great wide receivers and didn't have great speed.

Don't talk about Bey being a better prospect. One week ago everyone was saying "please don't take Bey, take Crabtree or Raji". Now everybody has switched to saying "Bey is way better than Crabtree". Don't be naive. It was the wrong pick. It may pay off, and you never know who will be a bust and who will be a surprise, but as of right now, it was the WRONG pick. Get over it, and stop lying to yourselves.

Crabtree's attitude is what not made me want him

Sure before the draft I was Crabtree, Crabtree, Crabtree but, after we took DHB and he went to SF it occurred to me that DHB was the better pick especially when Cable said we were planing on taking him for months so I’m happy with this pick and the overall draft.

I can say...

I never wanted crabass and I definitely didn’t want DHB but raider rocker is right. My arguments against everybody on here before the draft was because everyone was all pumped up for crabass as I wanted Raji or Monroe. Davis and cable didn’t pick DHB over crabass because of his diva attitude, they picked him because he ran a faster 40 time regardless of the fact that crabass had better hands, better route running and better stats.

-NEGATIVE- kawelu oh he's gonna cry in the car

In the NFL we’ll just see who has the better hands.

Yo fog, what the hell are you talking about...

crying in the car, bring something to the debate that everyone can understand. DHB has more speed but I already know that crabass has the better hands and route running.

Dito

nobody knew about his attitude before the draft and I think most people here like not having picked Crabtree because he obviously didn’t wanna play for the Raiders.
Adding the stuff, Singletary said about Crabtree, you gotta be happy about not having this diva around here.

I still think we should’ve traded down, but who knows?! maybe there was no team willing to trade up, mainly because Sanchez was gone at #7…

Just win, baby!

by trentemoeller on May 1, 2009 5:39 AM PDT up reply actions

Dito to what...

we took DHB instead solely based on his speed, it had nothing to do with the diva attitude of crabass. NEW FLASH: unfortunately nobody wants to play for the raiders whether it be because of the endless drama or the rebuilding mode.

Not this guy

You can look back at everything I’ve posted and what you will find is me saying " your getting Crabtree, NOT the Texas Tech Red Raiders!!!!! He is a good reciever playing for a great coach in a great offense with a good QB (well i said great QB) I didn’t want a WR at all but if we did get one I want DHB or Hakeem Nicks.

by Black and Silver Express on Apr 30, 2009 9:24 PM PDT reply actions

How can it be the wrong pick right now?

I agree that the constant bickering is getting ridiculous but it is not the wrong pick, it might be someday, or it might be pure genius, time will tell us that. No pick is right or wrong until the final tally comes in, and that is years away. Hell, Russell might have been the wrong pick, or McFadden, we don’t know yet. I think there is real good chance that Safford or Sanchez are the wrong pick but can’t make the comment yet.

+1

We won’t know whether it was the right pick for several years, based on NFL production.

Your claim that DHB was the “wrong” pick is based on either your own or the media’s perceived value of particular players and the necessity to draft according to those values. The media gets it right about as often as a monkey picking stocks, and I’ll take Tom Cable’s and Al Davis’ opinion over all of our sophomoric opinions any day.

Cable sold me on the pick based on his description of DHB’s role on the team and the idea he may be closer to NFL ready based on Maryland’s pro-style offense. I also agree with Cable that if DHB had been in a spread offense his numbers would be better than both Crabtree’s and Maclin’s. Go back and watch some of those highlight videos again – when DHB gets a bubble screen he is even more dangerous than either of them.

Slade Norris destroyed the periodic table, because he only recognizes the element of surprise.

by LiveAdam on Apr 30, 2009 9:41 PM PDT up reply actions

That's the thing...

to not know for several years how a draft pick is going to work out is nerve racking. Why not take the players with better talent and less bust potential. We need players to make an immediate impact from their rookie year, especially if he’s going to warrant our #7 pick in the 1st round. Not wait around for a couple years while they learn to better their craft. It’s definitely possible as Larry Fitzgerald and Calvin Johnson are prime examples but you need talent and fundamentals, not speed as both of them are not known for that.

DHB

I disagree kawelu, respectfully of course. The Raiders need a lot more than a few quick fixes and we didn’t hire DHB to be a ‘go to’ guy. We hired him to catch a long ball from time to time and make the other team have to spend coverage on him every time he steps on the field. Just like Mitchell will hopefully get a few big hits and make all those receivers nervous enough to drop a few balls.

by dram5780 on May 1, 2009 7:29 AM PDT up reply actions

ok there's so much wrong with your argument

you’re saying it’s a good thing we spent a #7 overall on a situational player? If we wanted a guy “to catch a long ball from time to time and make the other team have to spend coverage on him every time he steps on the field” we would have wised up and drafted Mike Wallace in the fourth. He ran a 4.3 40 just like Bey, is only two inches shorter and has better hands and made up for the height difference with a better vertical.

Sadly Al and Tom are dumb enough to believe Bey will be a go to guy. Hell no, if you want a Larry Fitzgerald you look at Michael Crabtree. To argue that we drafted Bey to stretch the field is ridiculous.

Difference of opinion

R3ZZ I never said DHB would be a situational player. I think he’ll be on the field for most offensive downs. And I disagree that Al and Tom are dumb enough to believe Bey will be a ‘go to’ guy. The ‘value’ of that pick can’t be known by any of us or even Davis and Calbe for a while. My point is (think of it in military terms) DHB and Mitchell were hired as ‘force multipliers’ or in Cable’s terms (about DHB) to make other players better. The Raiders are a TEAM of 53 not a bunch of players only to be evaluated as individuals. If you can hire a couple guys who can help the whole team that is a far better ‘value’ than someone who’s only gonna shine in his own spot and not improve the overall team. That would be a waste of a pic. You could argue that their overall strategy is flawed, but in following thier strategy they made good picks.

OK I’m done talking about Bey. All of us are full of shit if we think we can predict how DHB will fit in. We’ll just have to wait and see.

by dram5780 on May 1, 2009 5:58 PM PDT up reply actions

crabtree didnt stretch the feild in college because the spread system doesnt call for it..not to say that he cant but he didnt prove it in college..larry proved it in college dhb proved it on a limited level in college..so there is less unknown

by pablopaul25 on May 1, 2009 6:04 PM PDT up reply actions

We do need more than quick fixes...

so before you worry if we got the fastest WR, worry about if our QB can even get the ball to DHB. Fix both of our lines first and everything will fall into place. Our #1 WR should be our “go to guy” and catch anything that throw to him regardless if it’s for a toucndown or a much needed 1st down to keep the drive going. We know DHB is fast but we don’t know if he’s going to catch the ball or even run the right route.

by kawelu on May 3, 2009 6:00 PM PDT up reply actions

you dont know if any of these wr in this years draft will do that though…its funny people talk about suring up the line all the time…does everyone think that your going to draft a rookie and hes going to be a probowl left tackle…if there is one thing to remember as a raider fan its gallery he was more of a cant miss prospect than any of these lineman and he cant play tackle..the draft in general is not certain

Seriously?

In 2008, Shaun Hill played 8 games and threw just as much TD’s as Jamarcus Russell. Hill also had a higher QB rating than Russell. Russell beat Hill in yardage as he eclipsed Hill by nearly 400 yards, but if you add in J.T O’Sullivan (who started the other 8 games) Jamarcus looks like a pee wee player. I’d like to believe with Vernon Davis, Isaac Bruce, Frank Gore, and now Glenn Coffee all in place The 49ers are more “fundamentally sound.”

Oh yeah and by the way they have a better defense than us too.. Think before you blurt stuff out like this

You just said it Shaun Hill played half the Season and J.T played the other half that is inconsistency at the QB position already. Why Did Jamarcus end up as one of the top rated QB’s in the last 6 weeks? Before you start talking about who is more Fundamentally sound maybe you should look at some additions we made during something we call an “Offseason” I don’t need to name those players that we have gotten because it’s all over this site, if you have enough brains you would check it out first. SF had a better defense than we did well, you could say that but, we finished in the top 10 when it come to pass defense they finished 20th. So, maybe you should take your own advise. I also believe that DHB was the right pick for us and we will see come season 2009.

I never said Bey will suck

I also said you never know who will be good and bad. That doesn’t mean completely ignoring who did better in college. Just because you dont know who will do good wouldn’t justify taking Slade Norris with the number 1 overall pick saying “he might do good and aaron curry sucks”.

I am fully aware that Bey may end up better than Crabtree. However, just looking at films and numbers, and accolades, Crabtree was the better prospect.

All of you saying “i wanted Crabtree, but after the draft I decided Bey was better” are being ignorant. If the Raiders DID pick Crabtree, you would have said “Crabtree was the best receiver in the draft and the Raiders got a great player”. This is all hindsight bias. Just becasue the Raiders picked Bey, all of a sudden he was the right answer. The bottom line is, whoever the Raiders picked, you would all be sayin “ya for sure he’s the right guy”. The fact is, Crabtree was the best receiver prospect in the draft, and the Raiders passed on him for an unproductive speedster. Bey’s 13 touchdowns in 3 years (4.3 average) does not impress me. Crabtree had 19 touchdowns. LAST SEASON.

Bey never even had an 800 yard season. 800 is not even that great, and he never even reached that. Crabtree consistently had 1000.

If you think Crabtree wasn’t fast enough, Maclin is a fast guy, and he equaled Bey’s career touchdowns last season, with 1200 yards.

Bey very well could become the best, but wasn’t the smartest choice.

Ya i know he is in a pro system with a not as good qb, but 4.3 touchdowns per year in college is not number 7 overall worthy. Crabtree had more touchdowns

I think it's absurd

that you think Heyward Bey was not the right pick. What are you a football scout? Layoff and let DHB play before you go and say he wasn’t the right selection. Or why dont you go a step further and label him a bust already like the morons over at ESPN? If you know anything about our team then you know that DHB was the perfect selection. Nothing is guaranteed when it comes to drafting players so layoff and get on the DHB wagon where you belong Raider fan.

by The Autumn Wind on May 1, 2009 7:21 AM PDT reply actions

He was the wrong pick because he does not hold enough value to warrant a #7 pick

Crabtree is a complete NFL ready wide out whereas Bey has issues dropping the ball and can’t make a cut on a route to save his life.

What are you a football scout?

Weak argument considering all the football scouts are saying Bey over Crabtree was the wrong way to go at #7. Well except the Raiders scouts and Eric Mangini but that isn’t exactly a lot of credential to back the argument.

If you know anything about our team then you know that DHB was the perfect selection.

You should have said “if you anything about Al Davis.” Bey is a burner that sucks at running any route except the slant and the crooked slant, we have a burner in Higgins already, so this same statement can be used against you.

Nothing is guaranteed when it comes to drafting players so layoff and get on the DHB wagon where you belong Raider fan.

Nothing is guaranteed when you buy stocks either but you still do you’re research and see which one is worth the investment… Unless the situation i sinstead of stocks it’s players in the draft and you’re Al Davis, in which case you’re pure genius football knowledge allows you to waste picks on guys who you’ve only seen run the 40.

2003-Nmandi Asomugah- Boom (4-12)

I know a couple of those players one being T.O. and he has been very successful in his career and crabtree is nowhere near the diva T.O. is. to say somebody wont succeed just because his attitude is utterly laughable. T.O., Chad Johnson, Steve Smith, Anquan Boldin all come off as irrogant and all have great careers right now. I think Crabtree isnt gonna be like them attitude wise but productivity wise he has a good chance cuz he has all the tools nessessary to be that type of player. and DHB does too its just he’s more raw needs to work on his hands/catches, drops to many balls, and disappears from games at times. thats why people question the pick because he needs more time to develop as for crabtree is more “NFL Ready” so to speak.

The only reason people are saying that he was a bad pick is because he wasn’t rated to go that high in the draft and that we should have traded down. You have to remember that it takes two teams to trade down, and even then there is no garuntee your guy will be there when you trade down.

I’m wondering does anyone know about any reports or rumors as to if anyone even wanted to trade picks with us? I know some have speculated but I haven’t read or heard anything reliable about that. I have read a couple post about other teams wanting DHB in the first but don’t remember where or who or if they were reliable either. Anybody?

No

he was a bad pick because Crabtree was still on the board. Crabtree is infinitely more talented than Bey and we passed on him.

infinitely?

infinitely more talented? You’re an idiot. How in the f are you in any position to make such a dumb f assertion? His drastically overrated college numbers? Did his silly spread offense that he came from get you to fall for him? That bs dont exist in the NFL son. Crabdiva will have a much tougher time adjusting to the NFL than DHB because he doesn’t possess the natural gifts that DHB has. In fact he’s slow. and he’s shorter than what was once believed. Crabdiva is much more likely to bust than DHB and you’re sitting here calling him infinitely more talented. you’re a joke man.

they both look to be promising

both crabs and DHB look to be good. people just say DHB may be a bust cuz he had games were he didnt even catch one ball. even if ur a run based program u at least need to catch one or two to make ur presence felt. but still i think both will be good players.

Yo 49er

We know that Jamarucs Russell will be the Starter for us but, I don’t you if you or anybody knows who your QB will be, personally I think that J.T is a better fit than Hill he made a lot of amazing throws the end of the season. And just a thought would you have taken a QB if Crab’s wasn’t there.

Amazing, Jamarcus Russell hands off to McFadden who pitches it back to Russell who find Darrius Heyward Bey in the Middle of the Field wide open 30, 20,10,5 Touchdown Raiders! Amazing. This telecast is Brought to you by Cable.

dude

spell your fav player’s name right. jk

J-Mac got arm, D-Mac is unique, DHB got the hands, and he can move his feet.
Niners got Hill, he is really cheap, now they got Crabtree, hey don't fall asleep.

Oh

Nice Catch- Jamarucs Excuse me ,cough, cough,…Jamarcus Russell and he is not my Favorite Player Mr.McFadden is for future reference the only reason I have Russell’s jersey was because McFadden’s was all sold out.

Hey

I like all our players. Just I like Nnamdi a lot more.

So

Let’s just say if Nnamdi wasn’t #21 and Micheal Hufff was #21 would you still like Nnamdi or Huff. So, my question is do you like the player or the number?

Um

If you didn’t know cousin, I liked Nnamdi from his Cal days. He was showing signs of being a shutdown corner there also. He was just inconsistent. I loved Nnamdi even when he was a rookie and no one liked him. Remember that basketball game we went to with the Raider and Niner greats and Doug Gabriel and Nnamdi. Which line did we go to? Doug Gabriel. Than after, I went into Nnamdi’s line to get his autograph.
So please, don’t question my “love” for my favorite player. It is just pure luck that both of my favorite players wore my favorite number 21. Sean Taylor, you already know I liked him at the U. It is just lucky that my favorite players took my lucky number.

Who is your favorite player? Do you even have one? Gosh, I took that one to heart, my bad bro. You know how I am.

My favorite player is if you didn't know

It’s not Mcfadden or Russell and he isn’t playing anymore he is an broadcast on NFL Network sometime Rod Woodson not just because he wore 26 but I liked the way he played and me, I have absolutely to interest at all in playing Safety like him, I want to be either a TE, WR,RB, or DE I’m not sure which one yet but, playing for the Cougars this year will set me up for my NFL career Cuz, I know that I will make it there and there is absolutely no Doubt and if you don’t believe that then It’s fine by me I am going to be the Best player in the Nation whatever my position may be. Keep that in mind, That came from the Heart Bro. No Offense.

You Dont Know

its ok i mean like u said on other posts you dont really watch niner football. first off J.T.“fumbling machine” O’Sulllivan is on the bengals now so he is NOT on the niners roster anymore. 2nd of all he did throw a little better then hill but he had a huge problem hanging on to the football. 11 fumbles and he only played half of the year plus he had 11 ints and again he only played 8 games. Hill is a better leader because he doesnt make dumb decisions, takes better care of the football, and most importantly WINS football games.

Thanks I didn't know

Where he went so, If he is not with you then who is fighting for the starting QB position?

Hill

Hill is the starter and should be because he has never had a full season to show what he can do. Hill is a player that wont wow you but he does all the little things right. plus everytime he has come in late in the season he has won most of his games i think he is 7-3 as a starter if im not mistaken. Alex Smith should just be our backup just in case something happens to Hill

by 49ersAllTheWay on May 4, 2009 10:47 PM PDT up reply actions

oh also

we have damon huard and nate davis but those are like QBs that if we desperatly need them due to injury then we will start them

by 49ersAllTheWay on May 4, 2009 10:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Hey Niner do you think there is any chance Smith

will start?

i hope not

I think Hill deserves to Start the season and i know he will do good or decent at worst. If smith starts it should only be due to injury or if Hill somehow starts being inconsistent but to this point he has won us alot of games and thats all that really counts. your a Raider fan so u should know that cuz ur statement is “just win baby”

by 49ersAllTheWay on May 5, 2009 4:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Damn straight bro

not just a statement but a way of life!
Yeah it definitely seems like Hill has the inside running definitely seems like a solid starter, was really surprised that they went with O’sullivan to start last year actually because I thought Hill finished the previous season really well.

i was suprised too

for the same reasons bro. hill did good in the last games of the season. the reason o’sullivan got the start was because he knew the martz offensive system more but he still didnt know the most important part DONT TURN THE BALL OVER. lol.

Yeah its funny though

For Martz, a guy who has had so much success – Greatest show on turf and I thought he did ok as OC in detroit his reputation has really gone down the crapper

No, he was a bad pick...

because Raji and Monroe was still on the board.

by kawelu on May 3, 2009 6:12 PM PDT up reply actions

the bottomline is you have to take players that fit your system..we took dhb higher than he was projected but alot of people went before they were projected…crabtree DIDNT WANT TO BE A RAIDER!!..so that seals it..monroe will likely have injury problems in the future and we needed a reciever…dhb fit our system more than any of the recievers…im not going to lie and say i didnt want crabtree..but as ive said earlier..crabtree may be a better reciever but every team still needs that deep threat..and dhb was the best at that in this draft class

by pablopaul25 on May 1, 2009 2:28 PM PDT reply actions

All this WR talk is good

BUT anyone being drafted has a 50/50 chance of making it in the NFL. Cable stated he was using Bill Walshs draft philosophy “If you want a guy you go and get that guy” Whether or not DHB will be better or Crab we will see. But Cable got his GUY!

I myself wanted us to address the D-line or LB its not whether we should have taken either WR we should have drafted Defense like Orakpo (with Burgess most likely gone next year)
AND I was PISSED that we could have had Brace in the 2nd. But they( Cable and Al) have a plan and I hope it works out. It’s all in the past now

After reading a lot about the players we got. (Although I would have done it differently) what we have done in offseason plus the draft I think we will improve. (as long as Cables belief that our DT’s are not the run D problem and he thinks coaching will improve our RUN D) he better be right with or schedule.
A tougher Hard Hitting D would be AWESOME LIGHT OUT kind of D. Mitchell I hope will strike fear in players going across the middle ala Woodson, Tatum.

Agreed

I think if you have to pick between offense and defense, work on the defense first. Especially while the Raiders are having these rough seasons. A solid defense can take you further into the players than just having an overwhelming offense. Witness the Chargers now and in the Dan Fouts era. Tons of points scored, never a Super Bowl win.

Look at the 85’ Bears. Offense wasn’t really impressive overall, but that defense absolutely could not be messed with, particularly in the Super Bowl. I lived in Chicago at the time. Was a Bears fan back then before I moved to California. It was a boring game, because the Patriots didn’t even make a show of it, couldn’t do anything at all. Only time I’ve seen a team switch quarterbacks in the middle of a Super Bowl.

by rightnasty on May 4, 2009 12:23 PM PDT up reply actions

i agree but there were no outstanding defensive players in this draft not early atleast

by pablopaul25 on May 4, 2009 2:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Oddly enough

This year, it seems a lot of fans are unhappy with their team’s picks. Lions fans wanted Curry instead of a quarterback, and even though the Niners did get Crabtree, seems their fans were not satisfied with the draft either.

Listen man

if we drafted Crab we would be lookin at his higlights 24/7. Now that we saw what Heybey could do, I t looks like we made the right choice
