Jeff Garcia to sign with the Raiders??

Here's the link:

http://www.nbcbayarea.com/sports/football/Exclusive-Garcia-Negotiating-With-Raiders.html

So he's an old man, but he may be the guy to push JaMarcus' development to the next level. If they sign him, he'd clearly be penciled in as the no. 2 QB, however it is not impossible to think he could bring a little competition to the Raiders QB corps come training camp. Regardless, I think the leadership and experience that Garcia could bring is exactly what this team, particularly on the offensive side of the ball, needs; whether he is a potential starter if Russel begins to slump, or as a clip board holder. He could definitely be an excellent mentor to Jamarcus.

I think after last year, everyone saw his talent level slip

he would be a great backup in the sense that if Russell were to go down (knock on wood) he could win us games. But he’s no longer a starter and wouldn’t be for most teams. Thank god Oakland is most teams.

also

with Garcia we get a 39 year-old, 3 time pro bowler. We’re pretty much bringing in another QB coach. Russell seems to be the focus of the offseason thus far.

I Think He Knows He Will Be

A mentor and a back-up. However, I hope he isn’t asking for too much $$ because that was one of the reasons the Bucs let him go. I think he is a great back-up and a great mentor for J-Mac.

i think

maybe it’s worth overpaying a little for a much better backup and mentor for JR

AHHH

thats NOT wat i meant. wat im tryin to say is a strong backup qb is an undervalued comodity. Even if Jeff Garcia won’t be that great a mentor maybe we need someone to make Russell feel a lil uneasy about his place on the team…

I Like the idea of signing Jeff.

As long as he realizes that he will never play unless Jamarcus is down and out.

makes sense

since we only have like….5 picks.

For what?

I don’t think Walter has that much trade value. We might as well release him.

by Raider76 on Apr 6, 2009 3:00 PM PDT up reply actions

why not?

He has a lot of talent, just needs a good O-Line and WR. He could be a solid backup for a team lacking one. We run an offense where the QB has to rollout and move around effectively. Walter is a pocket passer, thus unsuccessful in Oakland. Put him with San Francisco, or St. Louis (good trade destination there) and he can probably be very good.

As a Raider fan he has value to you,

but go to some of the other blogs on SBN and ask them what they think is Andrew Walters trade value and you will get your answer.

by Raider76 on Apr 6, 2009 7:44 PM PDT up reply actions

haha

most sbn bloggers probably don’t know enough about the raiders to know who walter is…

but he’s young, tall and cheap. He would be a pretty decent backup QB for most teams. Probably is a step up for teams like the niners or the vikings…

is he worth much? no. but theres definitely enough trade value for a 5-7th round pick.

I say a low fifth

if what we should net from him. Which is fine with me. Al’s got an eye for lesser known talent and can find a future contributor with that fifth.

That's mighty generous

for a quarterback who has a career 52.6 quarterback rating and has thrown 3 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. Their is no market for him. If a team needed a quarterback they would’ve already signed Leftwich and Garcia.

by Raider76 on Apr 7, 2009 2:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Because Walter

never got a fair shot. He came in w/ the Art Shell disaster and then he was deemed as “a horrible QB”. Well put Manning or Brady in the game that year w/ our o-line and play calling and you’ll ruin their career too.

by mikesd1981 on Apr 7, 2009 6:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Not even close.

Tom Brady made it early in his career with no name receivers and peyton manning was carrying his team on his back early in the 2008 season with 3 practices under his belt and no running game.

Walter couldnt get on the field last year or the year before because he isnt that good. His career tds in college are exactly that, COLLEGE TOUCHDOWNS not nfl tds. Art shell didnt touch the qb position and walter still floundered.

by posey440 on Apr 7, 2009 6:44 PM PDT up reply actions

No, Shell didn't touch the QB position.

He touched all the positions that surround the QB and protect him.

I agree with KA1Z3R

that Garcia would be like having a 2nd QB coach by backing up Russell. He did work with Paul Hackett a few years ago in Tampa.

And yes

we can trade Walter for a later round or conditional pick.. its better than letting him walk away for nothing next year

JaMarcus is our leader

just putting that out there to start with…
Garcia at the #2 position give us a mentor for JR, a VIABLE backup if injured, and strong lockeroom addition if he is okay with the second seed.
Walter… Trade him for whatever we can get draft wise this year or next. He is gone next year anyway.
Tuiassocrapo… just cut the ties and let him latch on someplace else… maybe he can get another superbowl ring by watching.
In all the trading of Walter for a low round pick this year or next is inviting… especially if we drop out of the top ten this year with either Denver or Philly for more picks.

looking forward to the next 30 years of this team

or drop out with New England

imagine us getting their first and those three seconds. hell even two of the three second would be good. They could try to trade up for Malcom Jenkins or Brian Cushing.
