Should There Be A Rookie Cap?
I am in complete favor of a rookie cap because it seems like all of the high picks come in and don't have to work hard to be among the highest paid players, while players like Derrick Burgess bust their tails to achieve Pro Bowler STatus and still get paid middle of the road money in comparison.

agents
while i personally think there needs to be a rookie cap, the problem is that while everyone knows the players unions and owners are involved in the collective bargaining agreement so are the agents and putting a rookie pay cap into place is not going to go down well with agents. I wont be surprised if it happens but it wont be easy

There does need to be one...
Look at the raiders, the top guaranteed paid players are JR, Dmac, and it going to be DHB. All players who have yet to prove themselves.
Then again, its all about knowing the system. Teams like Philly, Dallas, and NE manipulate the draft. All three of these teams usually look to trade back. That way, the highest guaranteed paid players are those who have proven themselves…Brady, Mcnabb, Romo, light, a samuel, etc.. Thats probably why they are always winning..

yeah ne is the best at it, they put all there money into veterans and trade down giving them a ton of picks resulting in cheap rookies and when you draft ten players every year even a bad personnell evaluating team is gunna get a few good players and for a team like the pats with excellent personnell evaluating they just rape the draft every year

Rookie cap benefits everyone(almost)
The owners would be stupid not to want a cap and it would benefit the NFL and the current players. There would be more money available to proven players if you don’t have to shellout 40 million in guaranteed money to someone who has not played a down.
Plus in my opinion all that money leads to “draft busts”. WHY bust your ass if your already a millionaire.
The agents I’m sure don’t want a cap.
Doesn’t the NBA have a Rookie Cap?

Yes, the NBA has a rookie cap.

The NBA has it right!
Let them get some security early but Stafford contract and the Russell contract are nuts! They should have to prove it before they break the bank! Just like the NBA. It puts a team at a disadvantage. If they make a mistake that can cripple the franchise for years and in this economic state it could be even worse. The city of Detroit is crumbling and Stafford can almost buy the dam city. Just doesn’t seem to make sense…

football is different from other sports though..they make you play 3 years in college..football players also have the shortest playing range (3 yrs on avg. for running backs)..its a brutal game with far more injuries than other sports..so thats why when youve proven yourself on the jv league (college) you get PAID

I agree
but the BIG money goes to the top 7-10 of the draft, so those other rookies that have the same short careers still make very little. Bring down the cost of the top of the draft that frees up more money for vets and lower round rookies.

Yes. I think.
Have yet to see a argument against it. I would think with the salary cap that most players would favor it since it could mean that more money is available to pay them better. I read that the players union is against it but I wonder if the union has actually polled it’s members. I understand why the agents are against it since they are all about ‘me first’ but I think a rookie cap would benifit all players, teams, and the NFL in general. Fuck the agents, they’re just a bunch of leeches anyway.

wow, zero "no" votes
they had this poll during the draft and an amazing 99% were in favor of it. Why has the NFL not passed this? Instead they’re passing rules against hitting QB’s too hard and not letting people tackle the QB if they’ve fallen down. That’s bullshit. When did NFL football turn into a crybaby sport? Ken Stabler, Jack Tatum, Phil Villapiano, and all the other legendary players of the past would’ve quit the NFL if these rules existed back then.

That is why the owners opted out of the present agreement
because they know they have to have a rookie cap, they cannot unilaterally impose it without the Union agreeing. It will happen, it is just a matter of what the owners will have to give up in return. They might shorten the free agency period, or perhaps limit the length of a contract, nobody knows for sure yet, but it will happen.
It is funny to listen to people who argue that the owners don’t have to pay the players but conveniently forget that two years ago the Raiders were crucified for not signing Russell early. At the time that was the highest guaranteed contract in the NFL. The fans want it both ways, sign the player, but then complain that they get paid too much money.

you forget though that by the rookies making so much the good vets when their contracts are up can be like well you gave this rookie this much..ive proven myself and i want more..look at hanesworths contract for example…the onther reason this is different is because nfl contracts are not guarenteed..so the less money means less guarenteed money and the nfl players rookies or other live by guarenteed money

Truth is these people have all the money in the world, THATS REAL
TRU businessmen deal with these matters, without CAP’s GET REAL. Just ask our MR. G UPSHAW.I remember TIM BROWN saying " if Mr. Davis wants me then he will have the money to keep me no question". Next thing they will be talking about is VET cap mark my words.

There is no doubt in my mind that a rookie pay scale
is well overdue.
When a player who hasn’t played a snap is automatically the highest paid player on the team there is something wrong – here you go lions your crap and to help you out we are going to give you the right to pay some kid with a 60% chance of succeeding at best $61 million over 6 years and $41 million guaranteed.
If nothing is done it will be only a matter of time before teams start passing on top 10 picks.
Or maybe the teams should be able to choose their draft position in order of worst record to best like a draft, draft

What you have to wonder
All day long you have sports owners complaining about how much players are making, how the team itself is broke and everything. But who’s paying them this much. And if one team balks on paying a player a certain amount, another will come in and outbid them. So the owners are stabbing each other in back, setting the payrolls ever higher and screwing themselves in the process. And still complaining. And passing the costs down to the fans, and expecting cities to build them new stadiums. And putting corporate logos anywhere they can.
Meanwhile for the players, who can blame them for getting as much as they can when they read in the newspaper what somebody like Tom Cruise is getting per movie.
