Okay...JaMarcus Russell

All of this recent criticism of JaMarcus Russell and his labeling as a pre-bust or a bust waiting to happen has spurred me to take a look at some recent QBs with or around as many starts as him, and also inspired me to take a level headed look at what kind of QB we have starting for the Raiders.  In my findings, I've seen exactly what I was suspecting at the outset: it's too soon to judge.

The first thing that I would like to say is that there are three other quarterbacks that I'm going to use for this mini-article/eye opener, and the first one that I'm going to semi-profile is Matt Leinart.  He's an example of what I don't want to happen with JaMarcus.  He was also from a BCS powerhouse, highly touted coming into the league, and he went to a place where he was the unquestioned starter from day 1, just like JaMarcus.  The difference between the two?  Wide receiver play, because upon entry, Matt Leinart had Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin on his team.  He started off with two legit number 1 options at the receiver position and still fumbled his job away.  His situation parallels Russell's in a way that I hope never ends up happening here, as they also signed a veteran quarterback who ended up usurping the job from the younger quarterback.  We would be doing ourselves a disservice by doing that, because looking at JaMarcus' numbers over his 16 games starting and Leinart over his 16 as well...and JaMarcus has done more with less.

Statistically, Russell has more touchdowns than Leinart, has a higher percentage of touchdowns per pass attempt, marginally less yards per completion, and all of this playing with statistically inferior wide receivers.  Their adjusted net yards per attempt are very similar, within 0.2 yards of each other again (and I can't stress this enough) throwing to a very different set of wide receivers in terms of skills.

Next up, there are two very young quarterbacks that are seen as "getting it" while Russell is seen as struggling.  These two names get thrown out as "better" quarterbacks than JaMarcus, yet in their one season as starters, have put up similar numbers over the same amount of games.  Forget about Matt Leinart as a career progression (hopefully that scared off the Garcia as starter folks), look at these quarterbacks and see that with some help from his team, JaMarcus could easily have been in the same position as these teams.

First I'd like to look at Matt Ryan, because his team is easily one that could be eerily similar to ours, ideally we'd be better than their team defensively, but they are a rush heavy offense with good receiving options as well.  They have a Pro Bowl wideout in Roddy White, a more than solid running back in Michael Turner (who had a breakout year last year), another good option on the ground with Jerious Norwood, and in their offense, they ran the ball almost twice as much as they passed it.  This is the perfect offense to put a rookie quarterback in.  Their offensive line play has been pretty good since the days of the Michael Vick scramble-a-thon, putting Ryan on his back only 17 times all season.  Matt Ryan has had the benefit of having a decent structure around him, where JaMarcus has had questionable receivers, questionable offensive line play, and spotty (but decent) production by his running backs.  The only player that has been consistent in the 16 games Russell has started has been Zach Miller, something that Matt Ryan has not had to deal with.

Joe Flacco is another one of the names that is thrown out there, and coincidentally they are both "true" rookies, in that last year was their first year starting for their team.  The Baltimore Ravens are known for their intense defense (no category less than a top 5 last year) and having a decent to middling offense.  Last year changed that a little, because Flacco is no Tony Banks taking snaps, and they also had a change of pace quarterback in Troy Smith who is also a decent quarterback.  The Ravens also have a three-headed monster at the running back position, with Le'Ron McClain, Ray Rice, and Willis McGahee, something that allowed them to take a lot of pressure off of Flacco, along with the defense doing work as usual.  JaMarcus does not have that kind of defense backing him up, the Ravens were the number one defense in terms of points allowed last year, often times putting the number of points needed to win at a very managable number.  Can't say as much for the Raiders.

So in taking a look at Russell when compared to the two golden rookies from last year, his stats are similar with worse receivers, no breakout seasons from running backs/wide recevers (Matt Ryan with Michael Turner/Roddy White, Joe Flacco with Le'Ron McClain), better offensive line play (of the two, only Flacco was sacked more than Russell with Ryan hitting the ground about half as many times), and with a much better defense (Baltimore had a top 5 defense, and Atlanta had an underrated defense coming in with a top 10 defense).  In light of this evidence I have no choice but to leave the judgment of JaMarcus until the Oakland Raiders can develop a better team surrounding him, because right now, he's had to deal with an inconsistent offensive line (penalties especially are a problem, as well as sacks), putrid wide receiver output (only Higgins was decent, and Chaz came on late), and running backs that struggled through injury.

And most of all for the detractors...it's only May in JaMarcus second season as a starter.  We can breathe easily for a while, these are brand new receivers (Heyward-Bey and Murphy at least), we're coming off a long layoff, and passing hardly comes together in one camp.  This is not Madden where you can start up the franchise and loft the ball over Nnamdi's hands in your first practice of the season.  Timing, velocity, and touch take time to develop with receivers, and we've got plenty of that before the season starts, so take a deep breath, and let JaMarcus develop that before we all start piling on.

2008 for reference (comp/att, yards, completion %, TD, INT, Rating):

Russell 234 434 2796 53.9 15 12 73.9
Flacco 257 428 2971 60 14 12 80.3
Ryan 265 434 3440 61.1 16 11 87.7

Man, when are people going to get it regarding Jamarc?! It's got nothing to do with

the stats at this stage in his career, it has to do with his work ethic and sense of entitlement! When he comes into camp overweight and doesn’t stay late (plus rolling into pressers rocking fur and softball size diamond earings), I think pundits have a legitimate reason to worry about his “projected” developement. From the looks of it, Jamacs work ethic sucks (even Cable hints at this), so I think it’s fair to be alittle worried whether or not he’s going to pan out.

by Bacon on May 23, 2009 7:19 AM PDT reply actions

So far, there's been

absolutely nothing for him to work with as far as on the field. Can’t complete passes with no receivers, can’t rely on the pass without a decent option on the ground, the ground doesn’t go without the offensive line…it’s all a puzzle, and we don’t have the pieces (or at least we didn’t) to see what JaMarcus can do. Off-season stuff is just that, and we’ll eventually have to deal with the idea that a player is blamed for his agent’s negotiation strategy.

And if we’re projecting development, that includes statistical output, in which case, he’s fine. If we’re talking a sense of entitlement…I can’t speak to his feelings on anything, and neither can anyone else. People have a perception of him based on the holdout, but no one can just assume he feels entitled. That’s a load of shit. Work ethic, I’ll say yeah, he does need to be there after everyone, staying with the head coach/offensive coordinator, and maybe some receivers too…but it’s not going to kill him if he doesn’t. And it doesn’t make him a bust either.

Trying to be positive.

Hey Bacon

I’m trying to stay positive about Russell but I have to agree with what you are saying. I’m really hoping he shows “A Committed To Excellence” attitude this season. Unfortunately (and perhaps unfair) perception is reality especially for first round 60 mil QB’s. It appears as if he spent more time at the jewlers than the gym. Less bling more fling.

Since he’s a quarterback, there will always be critics out there. Sometimes it takes quarterbacks years and years to develop, but it won’t stop people from making judgments here and there.

Very good write up

appreciate the effort you put into it. I have to giggle a bit when I see guys writing about work ethic and how that dooms Russell. I guess they are all too young to remember Stabler, Namath, Layne and dozens of other guys who were HOF QB’s who had questionable work ethic. You didn’t mention that Russell is younger than both Flacco and Ryan with less college games played. Everything is going to be just fine, the pieces are getting put together, the time is there to develop timing. Just relax everybody, this is May, not October.

And he won because

of the defense of Baltimore. Frankly, in the playoffs Flacco looked like a deer staring at headlights. Baltimore had a very good running attack which made Flacco look better than he was, not to downplay his play but in the last two games Russell looked very good also, and in the last game he looked great handing off to Bush for 160 or so yards. QB is the most important position but it takes a team to make them look good, OL to block, receivers to run the right routes, and defense to get the ball back, in otherwords, it takes a team.

More Perspective on Russell.

Thanks for the great analysis. I just posted the article below on another thread before I read this one. Think it’s more appropriate here.

Unrelated. Jeremy Shockey rushed to Hospital.

Jeremy Shockey rushed to the hospital. Hope he’s alright. Saints say he was just “dehydrated” and will be fine. Hmmmmm.

Sure is quiet here today. Hope everybody had a nice weekend. Guess I should get a life. (a ‘real’ job would help too).

I think

He got dehydrated in a “swimming pool” while he was at a party with 5 other NFL players. He is a great TE maybe he and Miller will be a good comparison I hope he is OK I wish we had him on our team Miller on one side and Shocky on the Other amazing.

Lastes updates say he is fine.

Yeah too much alcohol will do that to you even in the pool. I know he likes to party but still foolish, especially in public. On that note I’m sincerely glad he’s alright. He and Miller would be awesome but I don’t see that as even a remote possibility.

I shouldn't worry about him

that much anymore. He should transition nicely to his first “Professional Season” because the spotlight and pressure is on Heyward Bey and that’s why Mcfadden is doing really really good right now too.

Why is this

his “first professional season”? He did play all but 1 game last year. If he does poorly this year, will the next year be his “first professional”?

First full professional season

He’s got 16 games started under his belt, his rookie year was pretty much holding a clipboard, so this season was essentially his rookie campaign. This would be the first non-rookie season.

Well

Rookies get Paid so Does that make them Professionals No that’s why they are Called" Rookies". Jamarcus First Year with the Silver and Black was mostly on the bench. 08 season was his first 16 game performance and what do we call people who have their first 16 game season Rookies. So, Next year will be his professional year. He has been in the league for 3 years but, his first start was garbage hopefully everyone can get my point.

I don't remember anyone calling Aaron Rogers a rookie

the year Favre finally left Green Bay. NFL is pro ball, hence the Pro Bowl after the SB. Granted his first season was sitting on the bench, and people seem to forget that’s a lot of his fault for not showing up to training camp and getting w/ the program cuz he wanted the money (yea yea blame Kiffin all you want). Last year was his first time starting, but it was a professional season. But now we’re just arguing semantics. He needs to shape up (attitude) and get w/ the program and lead this team.

again...

The player has very little if anything to do with their rookie negotiations (not just football, but any sport). There’s the lingering perception (which overrides fact in a lot of cases) that the player is the sticking point, but more often than not, they are under the influence of their agent, who is telling them that going to camp is caving to the team and that it tanks their negotiations. That’s being held against Russell and any player that “holds out” of camp at the request of his agent, which you must remember is hired to look out for the “best interests” of the player, but it’s pretty simple to see that a big contract will always end up better for the agent as well as the player.

Positive Outlook

Along with everyone else, am reading tons of negative press on Russell, have to wonder if that old adage is true. You hear something often enough, you start to believe it. NFL is a tough gig, few make it, and even fewer stand out. I hope the Raider Nation is cheering Russell once the season starts so he can aspire to the postive rather than just living up to the neg. I am behind this team 100%.. through the good years and bad since the beginning.

Over the weekend watched couple of shows about Giants superbowl years, Phil Simms and Eli Manning were considered busts until year 3.

Had my reminder today

I got Madden 07 for the PSP, started a season with the Raiders, and lo and behold, there was #2 at QB. Unfortunately, it was the wrong #2. Who still remembers Aaron Brooks and the season he had? Yep, at the very least we got a better #2 now.

He need a kick in the "BUT"

When you pick up a guy like Garcia it tell you a lot of things because it is definitely a sing of
trying to put pressure on the position and make it more competitive . I like the big arm and he has the physical without no limits . What the Raiders need is for him to study the NFL and study the opposing teams defensive scheme. I am really pulling for this guy and I think he can do well in this league but he has to put a lot of hard work and I think he is going to see that from Garcia and if the coaches see he is not working as hard expect Garcia to take over . I don’t mind seeing Garcia start of the season and making Russell earn his way back!

by RaiderDNA on May 26, 2009 11:13 PM PDT reply actions

I still think the Garcia signing

is more of an indictment on our backups than JaMarcus Russell. We have all but given up on Andrew Walter and Tui. That’s where having Garcia, Gradkowski, etc comes into play. We’ve got our number 1, but not a solid option at all for number 2…signing Garcia shored that up, and he’s also familiar with our QB coach, which makes a huge difference in his ability to help JaMarcus if he’s having some issues like they say he’s having with terminology and where there’s convergence with what was going on last year in the offense and what the play is called this year.

So I wouldn’t worry.

"..what you mean? I'm a legend like Kareem!"

by CommittedToExcellence on May 27, 2009 2:30 AM PDT up reply actions

The whole Garcia thing is odd

Garcia’s coming to the end of the line now within the next few years. I’m wondering why he didn’t try to get with a team that’s a contender. Speaking of which, the Bucs were one game away from the playoffs last year, and now it looks like they’re going into rebuilding mode. They had a solid defense, but play in a tough division. Instead they decide to let go of Garcia and throw up the quarterback competition between 5 different players, none of whom are probably good enough to get them into the post season. If I was a Tampa Bay fan, I’d be pulling my hair out.

The guy who might have been is now a Raider, the team which was the last to beat the Bucs last year. I kind of feel sorry for Garcia, because he can still play, put up pretty good numbers last year, but now he will be sitting on the bench.

Best rookie I could think of was Dan Marino 20 td, 6 int, 96.0 rating. Marino also played for a better team, though it is particularly impressive in his case because he was booed constantly when he was at Pitt.
