Darrius Hayward-Bey #1 pick vs Louis Murphy #4th pick
I have my own thoughts about our number one pick because I thought he was rated lower than seventh overall ,so why not trade down? The team insisted they had targeted Darrius Heyward-Bey since day one.? They could have save lots of money by trading down . At number one expect Matthew Stafford to set the millions dollar bar high and look for the rest of the first rounders to cut there own piece of million dollar cake . Here’s a comparison on two great receivers, I’m going to use numbers because it’s easy to speculate on future performance. Both are good receivers, they both had great college numbers . Louise Murphy won two National championships playing for the Florida Gators a fast team with a lot of explosive weapons including Tim Tebow and Percy Harvin .

|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| LOUIS MURPHY STATS | Receiving | ||||
| Statistics | No | Yds | Avg | TD | |
| 2008 | 38 | 655 | 17.2 | 7 | |
| 2007 | 37 | 548 | 14.8 | 5 | |
| 2006 | 2 | 42 | 21.0 | 1 | |
| 2005 | 0 | 0 | 0.0 | 0 | |
| Career | 77 | 1,245 | 16.2 | 13 | |
The numbers are pretty similar. Murphy has two college championships but college and the NFL are two completely different ballparks. In other words, this is the NFL and this is Raider Football!
Darrius’ time on the 40 was 4.3 official
Murphy's time on the 40 was 4.4 official
They stack up almost identically in size, speed and stats but there is only one ball and one play each down. They should compete viciously and if they do we can see them both on the field making plays weather is blocking splitting double coverage and spreading the field . I wish them both well and don't be surprise to see a Louis Murphy as much as Darrius Hayward-Bey. We will soon know who Jamarcus Russel new favorite target is. Raiders have definitely targeted last years weakness and now there is a good young core at the wideout position . I am hoping the best this year from the Raiders and they have some very exciting young players that could grow together . I know am ready to see the Raiders beat the Chargers this year aren't you?
Some would say we stole Murphy in the fourth and some would say we drafted Hayward-Bay too early in the draft. But no matter what every body says Raider fans are way to loyal to care . I just want wanna win Baby!

Yes, I agree
the arguments for and against have been covered from A to Z and nothing to add until 3 years from now when we will have a very good idea one way or the other.
Too many variables
Because if they trade down, there’s no guarantee DHB will still be available. As for the money, Al Davis never one to be shy about handing about big contracts. Me personally, I think they should have been shoring up the defense more, and letting Higgins and Schilens develop as receivers. I wanted them to take Orakpo. I figured after drafting a QB in 2007 and a RB in 2008, it was finally time to work on the defense. A more solid defense would have made life easier for this very young offense.
Who would take him?
If they traded down they could’ve gotten a couple late round picks, and Crabtree fell all the way down to San Fran, so who would’ve taken him?
I just think it's yet another "What if" question
What if the Raiders had drafted Brady Quinn instead of JaMarcus? What if they hadn’t drafted Huff? I don’t understand why this question keeps coming up, and yet people are not asking, “Since we had such a terrible run defense, why didn’t we draft a linebacker or DT first?”
As for who would have taken him, how could anybody know? They didn’t take him because he wasn’t available, but if he had been, somebody else might have. Every team has an idea of who they want in the draft, but if an explosive offensive threat is still available, somebody too good to pass up is available, they may well forget their original plans and snap him up.
Suppose McFadden hadn’t been available at #4 last year, what would the Raiders have done then?
....
Thanks for bringing up all that irrelevant stuff instead of even trying to answer it. Brady Quinn and Jamarcus have nothing to do with DHB. Yes, it is a question involving a hypothetical situation, and the most likely answer is that if the Raiders had traded down to the #21 pick, it is pretty damn close to a guarantee that DHB would have still been available, since Maclin didn’t even go until immediately before that and nobody other than Al Davis would argue that DHB was more desirable than the Mack. Just because the draft already happened doesn’t mean we can’t think about other ways it could have been handled. Sure, maybe some team might have really like DHB, and we’ll never know if SF would have maybe taken him at 10 instead of Crabtree too, but going on who these teams did pick I’d say there is about a 95% he would have been available late first round, and most likely even at our second round pick, because he was not held in very high regard by anyone other than Al Davis due to being a substandard college wide receiver when compared to other first round caliber players.

how do you know?
you dontknow how highly other teams had him on their boards…hes the best physical specimen in the draft a reciever with massive upside with the height weight and speed to be dominant at the next level…no one thought english would go as high as he did not to mention tyson jackson..everyne thought for sure orakpo would go high…obviously teams didnt like him as much as was originally thought…we got the best player for our team…not to mention everyone talks about trading down…but who would want to trade up if your in those mid picks and give up a first and a second and alot of guarenteed money for what player at 7?
"The most likely answer" and "95% sure" you say
Meanwhile you’re just doing the same thing I did, playing the what if game. You make a lot of assumptions too. That it never occurred to Al to trade down, that somebody would have been willing to make a reasonable deal for trading picks, that Al could have gotten down to 21, etc.. I mean, I know you think Al is an idiot. I get that. However I tend to believe that if it was as easy and in the bag as you make it sound, a deal would have been done. And, of course, in retrospect now that we know that Macklin lasted until, but at the time, he couldn’t have known that. Many of the teams in between 7 and 19 could have used good wide receivers, and he couldn’t be sure who would take what. Despite what the scouts said.
But for what it’s worth, I would have chosen Mack too if they were insistent on taking a WR in Round 1.
im glad we got dhb
we needed a legit deep threat and we got him..i would have liked to trade down too but i really dont think anyone was willing to trade up anyway..not a big fan of orakpo
these stats are almost irrelevant unless u account for the spread offense and the fact that tebow is one of the best college qbs ever and i couldnt name marylands qb
well
No, they’re not irrelevant. Great college wide receivers can still put up pretty damn good numbers without Tim Tebow or another great QB and without running a spread offense. There are plenty of examples of excellent receivers who didn’t have either of those things and still managed to have great seasons. DHB might turn out alright, but you can’t just throw out his college stats because he wasn’t running a spread.

DHB
had a different QB every year in his stint at Maryland. This is a good indication that Darrius can build chemistry with his quarterbacks and doesn’t have any problems remaining consistent in receptions and yards even with unfamiliar players. On a consistent basis DHB only has room to improve and become a great receiver. With Russell’s monster arm and Heyward-Bey’s demon speed, the Raiders have a legit deep passing game and are back again with a vengeance.
Win, Lose, or Tie, Raiders til' I die.

tired of hearing
why didn’t we trade down to get DHB. it’s not that easy to just trade the #7 pick away when the pick is guaranteed millions whether he produces or not but merely because he is the third pick. if we didn’t take him at the #7 he would have been gone by the time our next pick came up in the 2nd round.
We shouldve just called...
NE (or Cleve this year) to see how they trade down every year. Besides the niners, who got crabtree, no one through pick 18 needed a WR.
If Al really wanted DHB, he should have moved down. Save the extra money so we can get a starting FA. The real crime is AL didnt even bother looking to see if anyone was interested in trading up, he just targeted DHB. Can you imagine if we had the #1 overall pick?
its not that easy
cleveland got a chance to move down because teams wanted sanchez, its incredibly easy to trade out of the late first round because those are the best value picks u get good potential and dont have to pay out the ass.
this is really not that complicated people there were no players left that teams desperately wanted enough to pay 7th pick money too and any debate over taking crabtree or maclin aside we either had to take dhb at 7 or not get him
you dont know that we couldnt...
move down, or if any offers even came in, Because Cable is quoted as saying they didnt even care or entertain any. They just wanted DHB and that was it.
If in reality, we really couldnt move down, we shouldnt have drafted DHB. But of course, only time will tell….

seriosly
You’re right, we have no idea what they tried to do. So you can’t say what they had really tried to do, can you? You really think that the other teams were like, “oh crap, old man Davis wants to trade down! Lets just mess with him and not do it even though we would otherwise do the trade because we hate him!” With very few exceptions, the Raiders being one of them, an NFL team is too big and important of an organization to allow a personal grudge to get in the way of making a potentially beneficial decision.
