DLD 06/15/09: Tune in Tonight

Oakland Raiders linebackers Kirk Morrison (left) and Thomas Howard (right) will be on with Greg Papa tonight.

With the latest story on the Silver and Black Blog dealing with offseason workouts closing next week, the Raiders are making news elsewhere. Tonight on Chronicle Live, which is hosted by our radio play-by-play man Greg Papa, linebackers Kirk Morrison and Thomas Howard are scheduled to appear as guests on the one hour program. Visiting the show's official Web site here will give you the latest videos from show. If you actually keep clicking that arrow (you'll know what I'm talking about if you click there), you'll come across videos from every guest that has appeared on the show. So, tonight, tune in for Morrison and Howard. It should be good stuff. You can catch the show at 5:00 p.m. on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area and again at 11:00 p.m. on the same network on the replay.

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton (left) congratulates his tight end Jeremy Shockey (right).
Here are some quick-hitting links:
- New Orleans Saints head football coach Sean Payton said that he expects more from tight end Jeremy Shockey this coming season.
- Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin is among those that believe quarterback Brett Favre should remain retired.
- Madden NFL 2010 has released ratings for teams in the NFC North. It looks like a new NBA Live move to me in terms of the low ratings. Quarterback Drew Stanton is rated as a 47!

Oakland Athletics left-handed pitcher Brett Anderson (above) could be headed down to the minors.

Additional notes:
- Congratulations, Giants. You swept the A's in your home park. I hated every second of it, really.
- One week ago today, the first edition of The Weekly Raider came out. We're looking forward to the second issue from KA1Z3R. Darren McFadden, by the looks of the poll results, will be the featured player.
- Here are some pictures from the softball game played by A's wives and Giants wives. At the end of the post is an extended gallery.
- Yes, I think the politics portion of the DLD is gone for good. I think we're just better off that way.

Weekly Raider Issue #2
McFadden is indeed my featured player. So I hope you all will enjoy it. Unfortunately, the post will not not be up until later in the evening instead of my usual early morning posts.

That is pretty rare. You know, one of my best friends is a fan of both the Raiders and Giants. I don’t know how that happens. Finding people that are fans of the A’s and 49ers isn’t as rare, though.

Drew Stanton
Why are we surprised by 47? Is the not guy basically a nobody?

No one is ever rated that low, though.

Nightmare Continues for Broncos
Per Adam Schefter, via PFT.com, the Broncos slow boat to hell continues as now Brandon Marshall has reportedly asked for a trade out of Denver. Josh McDaniel’s hiring is becoming infamous, and he hasn’t even coached them in a single game yet.
As for Brett Anderson, I don’t see the A’s sending him down right now. All of the A’s young pitchers are frustrated right now due to the lack of offense and having to pitch perfectly in order to keep the A’s in it. Sending Anderson down to dominate the minor leagues doesn’t do him a ton of good. At some point, however, the A’s will need to give all of Anderson, Cahill, Outman, and Mazarro a rest, because they are going to start throwing more innings than they are accustom to.
Slade Norris destroyed the periodic table, because he only recognizes the element of surprise.

A's pitching
They can give those young starters a rest post ASB because they have Gio and Gallagher pitching well in Sacto waiting in the wings.
As far as the Donkeys, this is great… The turmoil, the dysfunction and players wanting out. Getting Marshall out of the AFC West would be great, except I hate that the Donkeys will get even fatter with draft picks.

Denver, Denver, Denver
What happened, a once offensive scoring machine last year has turned into a couple of screws and blots they will need major rebuilding time. The chiefs seem to have rushed the process of rebuilding with a mix of old worn out players which they think will win them games. Chargers time is closing like LT is. The Raiders are the only team in the west to take over a new system with years of rebuilding. 3 First round picks on offense, shutdown corner best in the world on D, we are super bowl ready.

Somewhere Mike Shanahan is laughing.
It’s good to see that the Broncos are having the messiest offseason.

The problem with Anderson, in my mind is:
He has more stuff than either Cahill or Mazzaro and he hasn’t found his rhythm in the bigs yet. He may need some time to develop a consistent approach.
I liked how he came out after watching Mazzaro and just located his fastball and then mixed in his breaking stuff.
Not fixing him now MAY end up hurting him in the end.
But when they start scheming us the way these guys did, and we weren't particularly ready for it, anything can happen."

Out of the spring, Anderson looked like the best pitcher we had.

Out of the 3
I think Cahill needs the most work. Having a power sinker guy is always nice, but he struggles throwing strikes more than the other two. Anderson has been unlucky at times, the A’s have already allowed 10 unearned runs for him, and may simply need to get more aggressive. He’s obviously got the stuff, but you’d think a guy throwing his fastball 93-94mph to go along with two nice breaking balls wouldn’t be as passive as Anderson seems to be. Mazzaro has really impressed me. He goes out there, throws 94 for strikes, then works in his slurve for Ks. Don’t worry, these guys are young. On top of that, there’s more talent in Sactown with Gallagher and Gonzalez.

The real problem with the ball club is the talent, or lack thereof, in the lineup.

So True
It is entirely possible that the A’s will field only four starters from this year’s lineup: Cust, Sweeney, Ellis, and Suzuki. All other positions seem to be up for grabs, which is a scary thought since we don’t exactly have anyone tearing it up and forcing themselves in the lineup. Cunningham and Buck aren’t exactly going to scare opposing pitchers. I wonder if Billy Beane would punch you in the face if you mentioned Andre Ethier to him. The infield may be in even worse shape, with no clear successor at 1B, SS, or 3B, although Cardenas may find a home somewhere on the left side.
For as deep as our young pitching is, the rest of our farm system does not seem ready to contribute.

A day late and a few pennies shy
But it’s nice to see the A’s get some mention here. I get yelled at when I talk about the Raiders on AN. :)
And yeah I don’t how anyone can like the A’s/49ers or Raiders/Giants. Hurts my brain to even think about it.

Well, I can understand the A’s-49ers connection to a degree. If you’re, say, 16 years old and living in Hayward or something, there aren’t the Raiders there if this is the year 1989.
