Oakland Raiders News! - Greg Ellis to Sign With RAIDERS
Breaking News as first reported by Raider76 in today's DLD, former Dallas Cowboy Greg Ellis is to sign with the Oakland Raiders today.
Ellis, a 10 year veteran will bring to Oakland 77 sacks in his career along with superb leadership qualities. The deal is expected to be 3 years and this was done without having to go through a trade.
Ellis had many teams to choose from, including the widely expected Patriots, but he chose the Raiders. That is a sign of things-a-changin' in Oakland!
Here is the link to the story first reported by Fanhouse. This will definitely have some effects on this seasons roster and will probably result in a Burgess trade.

WOW
I don’t know how you can’t be electric about this signing. Greg Ellis, a sack specialist and a crazy motor. I love the move. Raiderway, you are right, things are changing around here.
J-Mac got arm, D-Mac is unique, DHB got the hands, and he can move his feet.
Niners got Hill, he is really cheap, now they got Crabtree, hey don't fall asleep.

Finally
Some veteran help on the D-Line I hope we won’t be ranked in the top 30’s on run defense anymore also I am ecstatic about Trever Scoot seems to me he will have a great year.
Amazing, Jamarcus Russell hands off to McFadden who pitches it back to Russell who finds Darrius Heyward Bey in the Middle of the Field wide open 30, 20,10,5 Touchdown Raiders! Amazing. This telecast is Brought to you by Cable.

Strangely
Yahoo has him listed as LB. Does he do both?

Well, since he played outside linebacker with the Cowboys, that listing isn’t much of a surprise. I’m sure it’ll change down the line.

Because
I was thinking at 6-6, 265 pounds, he’s pretty bulky for an outside linebacker. Impressive that he’s got that many sacks. They still have him listed on the Dallas depth charge, and he’s biggest LB they got. Course they do have some monstrous DEs there.

Ellis In, Who's Out?
Signing Greg Ellis is fairly good news for the Raiders. The exact terms will ultimately determine how good a move it really was, but 3 year deals to 33 year olds are usually more like 1 year deals with team options. If Ellis is coming to the Raiders its because we offered more signing bonus money than anyone else.
Ellis’ signing is also likely to impact another Raiders’ future with the team.
Many would immediately point to Derrick Burgess being the one to depart, and there is plenty of evidence to support the idea: Burgess has been injured multiple times in the past two seasons, leading to a decline in production. He expects to play on the left side of the line where he can be a liability against the run at times. Also, he has semi-silently complained about his contract for the past few years and does not attend voluntary workouts. It’s possible that Cable, Marshall, and Board are so displeased with all of these things that they have convinced Davis to finally cut ties with Burgess through some type of trade.
It’s also entirely possible that the Raiders coaching staff has reevaluated the younger DE’s on the roster and found them not ready to contribute to the rotation. Ellis could be taking a roster spot from Shaughnessy, Gunheim, Sulak, or Gray, rather than Burgess. If this were the scenario, you’d likely see Richardson and Ellis starting, with Burgess and Scott acting as nickel rushers.
My gut tells me Burgess’ days with the team are numbered, but we won’t know until that transaction happens or the final 53 man roster is announced.
Slade Norris destroyed the periodic table, because he only recognizes the element of surprise.
ESPN’s draft coverage missed the moment when Al Davis and Tom Cable each took turns using Mel Kiper’s mock draft as toilet paper. - Chris Shellcroft

I think we will trade
Burgess to the Pats for some picks in my opinion

More likely one pick (4th?). The Patriots aren’t the kind of team to make desperate moves, and I would be surprised to see them even give up as much as a 3rd rounder.

Bye Bye Burgess
Still don’t know how I feel about that. Good analysis though.

I am fine with this signing
It has become very clear that Burgess wants out and frankly he has not contributed much the past two years anyway, and was weak against the run. Since Ellis played LB in the 3-4 defense he can also help with the Raiders in that capacity from time to time. I like the fact that the Raiders have identified their weaknesses and are going all in to resolve them. I have felt all along that it is not the DT’s that have been the source of the problem but the DE’s and LB’s. It appears the Raiders agree.

Hopefully
This will help us win games, championships, and the Lombardi Trophy.

Great FA Snag
I like this move. Ellis is a solid veteran with at least 1-2 more years left depending on how often he is used. He is excellent in third down positions and his contribution to the Cowboys made DeMarcus Ware better, and ultimately him expendable. He will provide excellent leadership to the young guys on the team. Hopefully, this will be a postivie move in the right direction and Ellis won’t become another vet (Moss, Sapp) that is succumbed to the woes of an Al Davis “Black Hole”

Haha.
Only the raiders would sign a guy that’s play 11 years already to a 3 year contract. Is Al Davis taking lessons from Danny Snyder?

Ellis accumulated eight sacks last year and if he can do something similar to that, it will be worth it.

Wrong. The Patriots and other teams were smart enough to offer him a 1 year contract while the Raiders were probably the only team to offer 3 years.

And you know this how?
You work for all the other teams or Ellis and KNOW he was offered contracts? How about the fact that he wants to play in a 4-3 alignment? And, as someone else pointed out, 3 year deals to vets like this are generally more like 1 year deals with options.

Don’t be a tool. You’re now changing the subject. We went from talking about Ellis’ talent to the length of the contract. The bottom line is that the guy can still get it done on the football field.

If I go and sign Brett Favre to a 10 year, 100 million dollar contract
is that a good signing? Sure he can play right now, but what will he be like next year or the year after that?

Ellis or Burgess?
if its between ellis and burgess i think we got the better deal and thats not what i thought would happen i thought ellis would be a sure fire NE signing because hes a vet who wants to win (obviously) but hes got that kinda character and burrgess being a malcontent should be traded to whoever if hes not gonna be part of a changed culture here

3 - 4?
The DT position still hasn’t been addressed. They’ve been a sorry lot (the whole D) for the last 6 years. I find it hard to believe Ryan was so bad that the DTs will suddenly start playing like super-stars. At this time they have a lot of hybrid types, so maybe they go to a 3-4? Can Kelly play nose? Sanders is big enough but I don’t think he could cut it.
by lurker88 on Jun 15, 2009 8:00 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
If this signing means anything
They stay 4-3. Ellis has played in a 3-4 but wants to play in a 4-3. So as you hvae pointed out, we still need a few DT’s.
by Rusty23 on Jun 15, 2009 8:05 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I like the signing...
but i wonder…can he PLAY WELL in a 4-3 system? I hope this isnt something like d Hall where he was a good player coming into the wrong system….

Great signing.
another veteran just in case the young guys don’t cut it or Burgess is injured/traded .
Great move by Al and Cable once again!
Great to see solid veteren players choosing to play for us.

Yes It Is
I also like to mention the structure of the team is so organized. This is a first time I am seeing this with the Raiders.
J-Mac got arm, D-Mac is unique, DHB got the hands, and he can move his feet.
Niners got Hill, he is really cheap, now they got Crabtree, hey don't fall asleep.

agreed
Like there is a plan in place. It’s great to see.
And yeah, Ellis’ signing (especially over teams like NE) shows that players are still willing to put on the Silver & Black, despite our recent track record. Here’s hoping he comes in and produces, and is a positive presence for the youngsters.
I'm here to talk about the past.
