Some Q's please
Hello Raider nation. I am a distant raider fan in hopes to hear some news on few players.
I'd like to know how jamarcus and mcfadden are doing in training camp. Also, how better will they be in the upcoming season?
Is Heyward-Bey looking up to expectations or exceeding them? And do you think he'll be a worthy target for russel?
And one particular player i'd like know about, michael mitchell. Is the 2nd round pick for him seem worth it? Would he start, and would he be a key factor for the raiders secondary? Would he flatten brandon jacobs with his jack tatum like hits?
And any other additional info that you guys might want to add, i would be very grateful. Thank You.

Welcome
It’s been reported that McFadden has been looking sharp and fast as if the toe injury has never existed. JRuss however hasn’t been doing that great appairently. He has been missing a lot oF throws i guess but is slowly progressing on both his skills and maturity.
We havn’t heard much about Hey-Bey besides that he has injured his hamstring and dropped a few passes, which isn’t new with rookie WR’s. Same goes with Mike Mitchell. He was sore for minicamp and hasn’t been to many OTA’s because of some lame rule. And we won’t know anything about his hitting ability untill training camp but i’m really excited to see what he can do.
Additional Info: Chaz Shilens is looking like he will be our No. 1 WR because he is lighting it up. 4th round pick Louis Murphy is looking like he could be a steal. Both Trevor Scott and Jon Alston have beefed up with muscle and are looking great. They are making a hard push for more playing time. And lastly, Rookie Matt Shaunassy or however you spell it is also looking great from the reports i’ve read.

i knew chaz was great!
saw him in the preseason last year and i thought that he would be a #1 WR or at least #3. I thought he was the most consistent catcher(besides miller) an route runner. I plan on seeing him explode!

Just on a tip, training camp doesn’t start until July 29th.

At best — very best — Heyward-Bey will be the slot receiver. Schilens and Higgins will probably be starting.
Also, the Raider Beat is a great site for Raider news.

thanks for the site
and i agree with your WR selections. i guess i also meant mini camp instead of training camp.
Depends on his injury
This kid was drafted to be our #1 WR and if he’s going to become a dominant reciever for us he needs to be out there learning. We will not be going to the superbowl this year, so getting this team that will make a playoff run next year in place by years end will be our mission.

I Never
Noticed how short Training camp is I used to think it was like a month but, if it starts in July 29 and our first Pre-season game is Aug 13. Which is only 15 days I think
Amazing, Jamarcus Russell hands off to McFadden who pitches it back to Russell who finds Darrius Heyward Bey in the Middle of the Field wide open 30, 20,10,5 Touchdown Raiders! Amazing. This telecast is Brought to you by Cable.
I personally think everything starts a week too late. This NFL season goes into 2010 and that can easily be avoided if the first preseason week starts during the first week of August and the first regular season game is played on the first Thursday in September instead of the second. I just think it makes more sense if the regular season begins and ends in the same calendar year.

My thought on Bey
This year, Bey will be mighty low on the depth chart unless Cable wants to give him as many chances as possible. But from what I’ve read, the WR depth chart based on their level of play in minicamp and OTA’s would be:
1. Schilens
2. Murphy
3. Higgins
4. DHB
Murphy’s been astounding for a fourth round pick and is playing like DHB and his spots should have been swapped. Walker is not on the list because he hasn’t practiced due to his surgery. Higgins is still good, but Murphy has been very impressive.

i thought murphy was a great pick.
he’s fast, a better route runner than Bey, and he has great hands to boot! murphy would be great in the slot.
1. heyward-bey or higgins: the reasons I have them first is because they are a deep threat, which can split the coverage for the other WR, but I’ll give the edge to higgins for his route running.
2. Higgins or Schilens: both fast and quick, and are also one of the frequent targets for russel. also, having another fast guy on the other side gives a slight advantage.
3. Chaz Schilens: Chaz is very talented, but I think his skills could contribute to its fullest in the slot. I don’t know if the raiders run a 3 WR offense often, but if they do, he’ll have a hell of a season. If they don’t then, I would have Chaz as #2 and murphy as #3. Murphy reminds me of Chaz a bit, and I think he’ll be another frequent target for russel this year, or the next.
4. higgins: he’s fast, has good hands, and a great punt and kick return threat, so I wouldn’t want to possibly have him injured.

I am a distant raider fan
By distant do you mean in the military overseas?
At first thought I was thinking “a fucking Pats fan” so I apologize for the unsaid insult!

no problem
i live on the east coast, in MA.
As for the WR's
Chaz should be utilized a lot this year as #1 WR
I think the battle for 2 will be between JLH, DHB, and if healthy Walker
Between Chaz as a possession WR and Zach TE (maybe Walker) as mid range targets it will open the field for DHB, JLH and Murphy as well for the vertical game. Chaz has the speed to go deep as well.
Plus DMac out off the backfield or lining up in the slot will also stir things up. Look for Dmac to be used as receiver more this year. We should get him in the open field as much as possible field. Let Bush/Fargas pound the rock. Screens and shuffle passes to Dmac.

look for DMac and the raiders to utilize the wildcat formation as well.
And don’t get me wrong, chaz is a VERY Talented WR, but higgins has more experience, and I think chaz would have more difficulty with premiere CB’s such as Bailey, cromartie or jammer being a 1st year WR. Higgins has more experience with those guys, and chaz could beat up the CB’s on the left side instead(even though jammer and cromartie are on opposite sides in san diego, at least andre goodman of denver, or any KC corner back on the left side would not be as talented as those two are against shilens.)
Like to see Chaz in there
call it a gut feeling I think he will turn heads this year

the starting receivers opening day will most likely be chaz and dhb..dhb will be given the oppurtunity to shine..do not forget also number one we are a running team so whose the more impressive reciever will not make you a starter which is the reason i dont see higgins starting at any point this season..dhb is a solid blocker as well other recievers will be thrown into the mix in 3-4 wide sets most likely..looking forward to see what murphy is capable of
I think DHB
will help open up the running game just by being a deep threat.
i dont think we should expect much in terms of production from either DHB or Murphy until atleast year two. probably year three. but i think they can both still help the team this year.
Don't confuse me with the facts, my mind is made up!!
i didn't know dhb was a blocker as well
dhb and chaz make a lot of sense. But I believe that your best, or most impressive SHOULD start because he is better than the other guy. Raiders, although they are a run first team, they cannot rely on it. They need to have a passing game, especially so jamarcus could get more better, as well as 1st year pro chaz, and rookies dhb and murphy.
You probably know about the receivers more than I do, but are you that confident to put dhb in for passing situations more than higgins?
If it were up to me, and they were going to use a 2 WR set, I would only have dhb in LONG passing downs, because I just feel that higgins is a better route runner, and thats more important than speed, or height. but for a 3 WR set, they can choose whoever they like as the #1 WR.
Like I said, you probably have more knowledge about their receivers than i do.
