DLD 07/02/09: Just a Week Ago

Michael jackson Pictures, Images and Photos

Just a week ago, it was a normal Thursday for most people; however, the day definitely didn't end up like that. A crushing blow was dealt to the world when Michael Joseph Jackson, the "King of Pop", passed away at the age of 50 on June 25, 2009. So, with it have been a week since his passing, I decided to do a DLD dedicated to the greatest performer of all time. While Michael reached his prime before my birth, his music still has had an effect on me. I enjoyed listening to many of his songs, including "Billie Jean" which is my favorite song of all time, "Black or White" and a whole lot of others. His death was a huge shock to me and I still can't believe he's gone.

Sure, public opinion was most definitely mixed on Michael. Allegations, which I don't think are appropriate to get into at this time, came out in 1993 and then again in 2005. Let me just say that he was found not guilty if that means anything to you. His past was troubled as even a young child. There is no doubt, however, that you can't ignore what he accomplished in the music business. He broke barriers. For example, he became the first African-American to have a video played on MTV. He broke records. Thriller, released in 1982, is the world's best-selling album. His follow up in 1987, Bad, became the first album with five No. 1 hits -- a feat that even Thriller couldn't accomplish although Thriller featured seven top ten hits. Also,  "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" was No. 1 in 1979, numerous hits were No. 1 in the 1980s and "Black or White" was No. 1 in 1991 making Michael Jackson the first artists with three separate No. 1 hits in three separate decades. Later on, towards the late '80s, people made a big deal out of Michael's changing skin tone as he looked "more white" than ever before. He told Oprah in a 1993 interview that he suffered from a rare skin disease. With Michael, you really never know. I guess it's up for you to decide, but we do know one thing: Michael Jackson is the greatest recording artist all-time factoring in charisma, on-stage talent and pure singing ability.

While there are questions still surrounding his death, there is no doubt that Michael will forever be missed -- but never forgotten -- and always remembered by his fans. Like Michaelangelo said as I paraphrase, "The creator will go, but his work lives." Michael's legacy will forever live through his music. Rest in peace, Michael Jackson. We will never forget.

well I apologize

if I’m being too harsh. But I get kinda peeved hearing everyday about a guy dying who isn’t in my family, isn’t somebody I was a fond, who’s music wasn’t exactly good to me, who’s often the butt of a lot of my jokes, and a guy who I honestly do believe committed the crime he was accused of. In fact everyone did at the time. Whenever someone said something about a child molester, Michael Jackson came to everyone’s minds. Then he dies and people all of a sudden say he never did it just because people treat his death as a big deal and don’t want to be looked down upon for believing he did said crime.

Hell, the only reason he probably was found innocent is because Disney got him a crackerjack legal team. And if Disney didn’t, Michael had his big mansion so he could probably have gotten a crackerjack legal team himself. Quite honestly I hated the man. But now people talk about his death as much as people did about Katrina.

I’m done with him and now wait for people to finally shut up and move on form his death. He wasn’t in your family, he wasn’t one of your best friends or anything. Just because he’s famous makes his death the biggest news ever. Whoopty-doo. My grandfather was a much better man that he ever was but no one will ever remember him. That’s why I hate celebrity deaths.

Totally agree with you

Karl Malden died on Wednesday. Are they making a big deal out of that even though the man almost made it 100? Of course not, even if he was a successful actor, he hadn’t gotten around to making his face into E.T.’s or buying his own giraffe? But why is his death less significant? To me, one of the most significant deaths in the entertainment world in recent years was Bernie Mac. With his loss, we lost a truly great entertainer.

by rightnasty on Jul 3, 2009 10:31 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

and look how Bernie Mac's death is even less significant

even though he was a much more successful and entertaining man in my opinion. Ed McMahon was never talked about at all and to me was the best entertainer ever. Plus he gave out the huge checks and stuff. I guess if you’re not a pop music icon you don’t matter.

So if Lemmy dies the same day Britney Spears does, he’ll get less recognition then her. Because Britney is a pop artist while Lemmy is a metal/hard rock artist and had a much better music career. Plus lemmy is a great entertainer and not a stripper who does horrible lip-syncing.

Lol

you can’t honestly compare Bernie Mac to Michael Jackson at ALL.

but I wish ppl in general would care less about celebrity deaths. they’re pretty boring…

by naq92 on Jul 5, 2009 4:39 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why not?

A major Hollywood star doesn’t compare with a self-disfigured musician with an unnatural fondness for small children? Well, I guess you have a point there, but I know which one I won’t miss.

by rightnasty on Jul 7, 2009 3:29 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

LOL!!!

I didn’t say that because I like Michael Jackson. In fact I couldn’t care less about either of them. I’m just saying, if you go for overall influence, michael jackson provided tons more than bernie mac or whomever obscure person Kaizer mentioned (seriously, Ed Mcmahon, who IS that?).

Honestly, I don’t care to hear about any individual dying…none of them affect me. But if you want to talk about who had more influence and who is leaving a bigger impact on the world, its no doubt Michael Jackson.

he's leaving a bigger impact

because he’s been dead for two or three weeks now and people still won’t shut up about him. Meanwhile I didn’t care for the man and am glad he’s dead. just my opinion.

i dont care for the man either

but saying he’s only leaving a bigger impact because ppl talk about him is ignorant. look at the huge number of awards he has achieved and all of his hits. Your argument is based on how you personally feel about him, not the rest of the world. In 50 years people will still be listening to him, Bernie Mac, maybe not. Ed Mcmahon, definitely not.

I get it thought dude, your a metal head. I love rocknroll too, I loooove moshing to some sweet local bands on friday and saturday night (ever heard of 924 gilman?). Personally, I wouldn’t be able to tell a Michael Jackson song if it was playing on the radio in my car, but I get that the majority of the rest of the world LOVES him. not saying its fair, just saying how it is.

I mean, I’m willing to respect the fact that this is a huge event to a lot of people. But ppl talk about his death wherever I go. I can’t even watch a ballgame or listen to the radio without hearing something about him being mentioned…

Beat It

No doubt in my mind that this song is a hit forever. The beat is crazy and michael lays it down in the track. Beautiful song. No doubt one of my favorite songs of all time from anyone.

A league spokesman denies speculation that the NFL has already approved the mass production of Brett Favre Vikings jerseys.

“We wait until there is a player contract that has been approved,” Brian McCarthy said. “Nothing has transpired from here.”

Reebok is believed to have produced screens of the No. 4 jerseys, but they could be destroyed if Favre doesn’t end up with the Vikings. He’s almost certain to, though, and the merchandise could threaten the single-season record for jersey sales.

NFL suspended Jets outside linebacker Calvin Pace four games for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.

It’s a big blow to the Jets’ defense. Pace is New York’s top pass rusher, and early impressions of backup Vernon Gholston’s second off-season aren’t promising. Pace will be eligible to return in Week 5 against the Dolphins.

Flexible coach Rex Ryan could adjust by using Bart Scott and Bryan Thomas outside with Jamaal Westerman and David Harris inside during Pace’s time off. It’s either that or Gholston is going to have to play a lot early in the season.

NFL insider Adam Schefter reports that the Broncos are willing to listen to offers for “disgruntled” wide receiver Brandon Marshall.

The Broncos “won’t make them, but will take them,” Schefter says, adding that he believes the club would part with its top receiver for a first-round pick. Denver already traded its 2010 top pick to move up in the second round of this year’s draft for CB Alphonso Smith. Marshall is a holdout risk as he recovers from hip surgery, wants a new contract, and has demanded a trade.

Free agent linebacker Willie McGinest wants to return to the Patriots, but there have been no formal talks between the two sides.

The Patriots may not want McGinest back at this point in his career. He’ll probably garner interest from some teams later in the summer, but for now the Patriots don’t seem interested.

Really Louis Murphy ?

At the place where rookies are supposed to be taught how to be mature and responsible

Raiders rookie wide receiver Louis Murphy made headlines Tuesday for sneaking up behind Miami Dolphins rookie Vontae Davis while he was being interviewed and pulling down Davis’ gym shorts.
On one hand, that comes off as a light-hearted, funny prank. However, Murphy’s timing could have been much better. He pulled off the stunt at the Rookie Symposium, where players are being instructed how to be more mature and responsible for their actions.
If nothing else, Murphy’s new teammates learned that they had better keep an eye on the prankster from Florida.

Amazing, Jamarcus Russell hands off to McFadden who pitches it back to Russell who finds Darrius Heyward Bey in the Middle of the Field wide open 30, 20,10,5 Touchdown Raiders! Amazing. This telecast is Brought to you by Cable.

Rated-R Superstar:

I see you posted in the comments some NFL links, but none of these in the DLD’s……..do you see why I complained the DLD’s are off topic? Jackson didn’t play for the Raiders or in the NFL. But the NFL links you have in the comments should have been in the DLD which should pertain to the Raiders and/or NFL news. And why not post about Billy Mays? Or Farrah Fawcett ? Or Ed. McMahon? When I saw the subject Just A Week Ago I thought we were gonna get some serious news from the Raiders on a signing or something.

DLD’s aren’t necessarily supposed to be on-topic. If it did, we’d have nothing. It’s really a place to drop general links, in short.

And why not post about Billy Mays? Or Farrah Fawcett ? Or Ed. McMahon?

Jackson’s death affected me more.

When I saw the subject Just A Week Ago I thought we were gonna get some serious news from the Raiders on a signing or something.

There isn’t any news going on except for Louis Murphy’s pulling down people’s pants and Slade Norris winning some sort of competition.

If you’d like to do a DLD, let me know and you may do so.

To be fair, mike...

There simply won’t be any newsworthy items surrounding the Raiders for another two or three weeks, and if/when there is, someone is going to write a post about it anyway.

Not even sure where DLD (Daily Link Du,mp) derived from or how many other sites do them (I have enough trouble checking on this site right now, let alone cruise other ones); I do know that it is (was?) a popular item on Athletics Nation.

While a DLD can (and should) surely contain Raider news, there is really no particular theme a DLD should stick to, and that includes whatever is listed in the title/body. The body doesn’t necessarily have to contain Raider news, though it would be nice. The title, well, it’s like the old adage of don’t judge a book by its cover. The title of a DLD has little meaning.

The person creating the DLD- regardless of what he has discussed in the body, regardless of whether any of it is jibberish, regardless if anyone else likes it- is simply creating a home for those who like to post (dump) links- Raider-related, NFL-related, or anything else-related. Often we end our DLD’s on AN by demanding or daring readers to dump; it is sort of a challenge to the reader to find and report anything from groundbreaking Raider news or something completely off-the-wall before anyone else.

Maybe a more suitable poll is to inquire whether DLD’s have run their course here in S&B Pride.

And now that I have spent a few minutes of this early morning detailing what a DLD is really all about (at least my understanding of one), I may as well dump a link to one of my favorite DLD’s.

I'm here to talk about the past.

This DLD was a rare post of mine in terms of content. Every other DLD includes a featured Raider story (if there is one), quick-hitting links from the NFL (if there are any) and then my Bay Area box score feature.
