Don't sign Michael Vick
Now that Michael Vick has been reinstated to the NFL, there are rumors that the Raiders could sign Vick. However, I have a piece of advice: don't sign him, Al. Who cares that he was arrested. That doesn't matter. What does matter is that he's been in jail. Not because he was arrested, but, when he was in his prime, he relied on speed and athleticism. Now, that he's been sitting in a jail cell for two years, he's probably lost his athleticism. Finally, we're pretty stocked on quarterbacks. Adding a third would just add money to our expenses. So, the Silver and Black should not sign Michael Vick.

When The Chargers
at least get to the Super Bowl then we can sign Vick.
Amazing, Jamarcus Russell hands off to McFadden who pitches it back to Russell who finds Darrius Heyward Bey in the Middle of the Field wide open 30, 20,10,5 Touchdown Raiders! Amazing. This telecast is Brought to you by Cable.

Vick can’t help us anywhere, really. Wildcat is a formation in which he would probably thrive, but we can exercise that option with McFadden and even high school quarterback Michael Bush.

agree
plus the guy has been in jail for two years. We have no way of knowing if he is in, “football” shape. Even if he is I still would not sign him because he is not a winning NFL QB.

To be honest, I wouldn’t be opposed to bringing him in if we didn’t already have Jeff Garcia. Vick is still a better option than Walter or Frye in my book.

how about putting a guy who was an actual nfl qb in there..then there really is a threat to pass…im just saying

JaMarcus Russell showed that he could be a threat in the passing game down the stretch. You must have missed those final six games or so.
Besides, if you want to talk about passing threats a little more, Garcia is a better passer than Vick. Garcia can still you hurt with his legs as well. He won’t be able to the extent that Vick can, but you can’t sleep on him.

im not talking about vick as our qb i was talking about strictly in the wildcat offense..no doubt garcia can play but the throws that made garcia good arent the throws that will exploit defenses or we hope will exploit defenses this year which is a very small part of the reason hes not playing

We don’t even need him for that. McFadden is the better option for that if you ask me and Bush, being a high school quarterback, could also run it.
Keep in mind that Arkansas started the “Wildcat” phenomenon and it was designed for McFadden:
The Wildcat was popularized on the college level by current Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn, and current Miami Dolphins quarterback coach David Lee in their former jobs as offensive coordinator with the Arkansas Razorbacks. In 2006, Malzahn, and in 2007 Lee, was the offensive coordinator for the Arkansas Razorbacks football team. They both ran a variation of the Wildcat formation in which running backs Darren McFadden and Felix Jones were prominently featured.

Vick Was Fun To Watch
He screwed up. It will take time to get back to his normal athletic self. Okay, if we didn’t have J-Mac, I think we would’ve signed Vick. But now, we really don’t need him. J-Mac is our QB.

no doubt about that i just dont like when ppl try to discredit vick like that

Vick was fun to watch. He obviously wasn’t the best passer, but he did win games. He did win at Lambeau in January and nobody — I mean nobody — does that coming into Green Bay’s house like that. He took Atlanta to their first NFC title game since 1998. With that said, I still think that bringing him in is not necessary.

i completely agree its not necessary to bring vick to oakland..but him mcfadden and bush in the wildcat would be unstoppable for the 6 or 7 plays a game they would do it

You can run it with McFadden taking the snaps with either Bush or Fargas in the backfield. You could also switch it up with Bush taking the snaps in the backfield with either McFadden or Fargas next to him.

If...
Emperor Alpatine wants Vick, the Raiders will get him.
Besides, I read a report he was the QB for the prison team.
BTW, I USED to be a Raiders fan, until The Emperor let Art Shell go after one frickin season!
How do you let one of the arguably best coaches of all time go without giving him time to make adjustments? Doesn’t make sense to me. I will probably come back to Raider Nation when/if the Crypt Keeper Davis leaves. Until then, later folks.
Thank you drive through...

Just Say No
If Al signs vick this will be a huge mistake. Granted Vick is an average Quarter back at best, there is no need or benifit to signing vick. I have nothing against vick, but we have enough issues with out this circus. May be he should go to the Cowboys, Jerry Jones is used to running a circus (Owens, Pac Man) they are a bunch of con’s he should feel right at home.

Mike Vick, I say yes....
You guys may not like this, but I am going to say it anyway, I believe Garcia at 39 and at the very end of his career should at least allow the Raiders to consider Michael Vick as a potential number 3 backup, Vick knows he won’t start coming in and should JaMarcus go down we have someone that is only 29 years old with speed and experience, as well as Garcia who is 39 years old and doesn’t have much long to play and will retire soon. And being that I am born and raised in East Oakland, let me say this. If you don’t like dog fighting, and I don’t personally condone it, he paid his debt and did his time, if Vick wears the Silver and Black, you come to Oakland at your own risk trying to protest on our turf, that would be a far bigger mistake than Vicks involvement in any dog fighting. Oakland is a City of blue collar hard working rough necks that can care less about your personal feelings when it comes to the Raiders. If you root for Denver in Oakland your entire family had better be wearing Silver and Black and have you surrounded. Oakland is a different kind of place with a reputation for toughness, the City that is, so long time Raider fans are really used to having players that are lets say less than civil. Plus Vick will not come at a high cost, does anyone believe that other than Garcia any of the other backups have near Vicks talent? And if the O line did falter, Frye, and Gradakowski would get clobber as well, and by the way, Vick was clocked at 4.4 before his serious training started. You don’t lose you ability at 29 after some time off, you just have to train to get your timing back.
My point is when i look at the past Raider quarterbacks, and look at the current back ups, and yes he missed a couple of years, however, so did Roger Staubach. I have to agree, he has not been a pocket passer, however, in light of the fact we are not sure about our O line it would be good if it did falter to have someone that could get out of the way when he needed to. JaMarcus is getting killed back there and until something different is proven, that is where we are.
Having a number 3 with his ability makes since to me, and had this dog thing not happened I am sure most would have welcomed a talent like Vick into the Raider fold. If a player deserves to start he should, I am not trying to replace JaMarcus, however, if he did falter it would be good to still win, and if the O line is not completely up to par, the other back up potentials will go in to get killed as well except for maybe Jeff Garcia and his days are truly numbered at 39. Vick is better than a wildcat player because he can throw the ball.

thats the best argument i've heard for vick
that is, only if he’s willing to be a #2/#3 QB. the speed’ll definitely help with inconsistent line play.

Derrick Brooks, I say yes...
Brooks was a terrific anchor against the run and is just two tackles shy of 1,700 stops for his career. Although he dropped into coverage much more often than he rushed the quarterback, Brooks still had 13½ career sacks. And his pass-coverage skills, highlighted by his 25 interceptions and 41 passes defensed, were tremendous for a linebacker.
Even last season, when his playing time was reduced because he generally came off the field on passing downs, Brooks posted 73 tackles against the run for the most part. Brooks wasn’t released for salary-cap purposes, but rather because the team’s new football regime wanted to develop some of its younger players. This guy has always been a run stopper hands down. Brooks didn’t reinvent the weakside position, but only a handful of men in NFL history have played the spot as well as he has.
There have been few classier gentlemen in the league during the past decade and a half, and few players who have been as respected by their peers. As a defender who earned 11 Pro Bowl selections, Brooks was arguably in a class by himself.
Now as we look at the Raiders, I look past what we have, and I agree that if Kirk Morrison is moved to the Strong side where he should be and you put a veteran like Brooks on the weak side to help develop our linebackers understanding of the game, and Brooks can still play, it will help our defense in the long run. No he is not a long term solution, he is a leader that can help our linebackers identify who the next leader will be, as it stands they just go through the year getting their butts kicked and run all over. D Brooks will help us more than any other linebacker on the roster. His locker room presence would be so important. And he won’t break the bank, he comes at a great price against the cap and his income does not have to be guaranteed.
However, again Brooks will probably be overlooked with the hope and prayer that someone will rise to the occasion. It seems to be what all Raiders fans hope for, every year we look at our roster and believe this is the year we will really improve. And pow 5-11, 5-11, 2-14 etc, it’s pitiful and being a guy that has been a Raider fan for close to 40 years I don’t get it. My hopes are that we do it this year, we have a great chance, I am just looking at every angle to help keep spirits high, the Raiders have a losing culture it’s all this team knows, bringing in additional standout veterans from winning clubs in key positions can help change the culture.

It boggles my mind that we haven’t looked at him. He is a huge improvement over Ricky Brown and Jon Alston.

i say
let the young guys develop. aren’t you under the belief that the chargers will win the division and the raiders are still rebuilding?
R. Brown/Alston might not be better than Brooks in 2009, but in 2010, 2011, etc, i think they definitely could be so long as they develop.

He can come here and be a Jeff Garcia person but, I say let’s let the young blood be on the field.
Amazing, Jamarcus Russell hands off to McFadden who pitches it back to Russell who finds Darrius Heyward Bey in the Middle of the Field wide open 30, 20,10,5 Touchdown Raiders! Amazing. This telecast is Brought to you by Cable.

Young vs the Old
History shows that young players develop faster and better with proven veteran leadership, especially top flight all pros. Why, well they can watch their work ethic, and learn things now instead of by trial and error. “Employ your time in improving yourself by other mens writings and experiences so that you shall gain easily what others have labored hard for” Socrates So, Brooks doesn’t come in to be a savior he comes to help develop our future leaders at the position…It is a win, win for the Raiders because he can still play, he’s not over the hill yet..
And Vick will be happy to be on any team, remember you shouldn’t start unless you deserve to. Every Player wants to start, all of them, however, only the best deserve to, the top performers get the nod. If J Russ deserves to start he will, if he doesn’t you’ll see Garcia in a heart beat, no different with Vick. As a player you never should worry about the next guys situation, you just do your best and if its good enough your position is locked. If not, well, do you want a player starting that shouldn’t be, regardless of the player.. Vick is a great athlete and he can help us if things go bad and Gracia is 39, its all but over for him whether he wants to play 5 more years or not, he is not George Blanda, Vick is 29..so I would give him a shot.
by Rodney Sacramento on Aug 3, 2009 3:02 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
but how can you tell whether or not
it was the veteran presence that helped, or if that young player was just that damn talented.
and what examples throughout history are you referring to?
Don't confuse me with the facts, my mind is made up!!
by naq92 on Aug 3, 2009 10:20 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Veteran Examples Past and Present
Current examples, New England Patriots….Rod Harrison, Junior Seau, and others Bill Belichick believes in this strategy and he has 3 Super Bowl rings and a string of winning seasons to show for it. San Francisco 48ers… Hacksaw Reynolds anchored the linebacking corp after all but being saved from retirement from Bill Walsh result 2 Superbowl victories…Oakland Raiders..Jim Plunkett, Lyle Alzado, Ted Hendricks…and the list goes on.
Some times the young guys can grow into great units, however, bringing in real seasoned veterans, not a lot, but just a few top notch all pro’s adds plenty to your locker room and your team on the field. When you keep doing the same thing and expecting different results…well we all know what that is…and that is what the Raiders have done. D. Brooks will add knowledge and leadership. Vick will add speed, youth and a ability to avoid the sack if your O Line falters yet again.
I beiieve it will help the Raiders and not hurt them.

I feel the same way you do, the youth is the future, I am not saying bury these guys on the bench, however, the Raiders have lacked leadership on a team with a losing culture, it’s hard to believe but that is what it is. To change that will require heart and I do feel a lot better about this season with Coach Cable working on the mental side the first 5 days. This team may just surprise us, I have been a Raider fan over 40 years and I do expect improvement.
