Hope This Helps You With Offseason Boredom

Still two weeks till training camp starts for our beloved Raiders. So while waiting for our many offseason questions to be answered, I offer up a small debate type post on a topic my friends and I have been debating for a while now. Who's the best 3 at each musical position in a standard rock/metal band. I'm interested to hear what you all consider to be our top 3's.

The positions that need covered are:

My 3

Singer: Serj Tankian
Lead Guitar: Zakk Wylde
Drummer: Max Duhamel

Your team is your child...You love it no matter what.

hey hey

good call on the drummer. lol. Wylde isn’t so great. He just plays the same chords and if it wasn’t for his “screech” effect he wouldn’t be famous at all. And said screech effect is overdone.

You are being technical

I still like the sound that Zakk puts out. However, if you want to be technical, there probably is no better metal lead than Yngwie Malmsteen.

i know but

when you know all this stuff, I don’t know, it just doesn’t make it sound as good. After learning how simple metallica is they’re not all that impressive to me. (dropped from 6 on my top-25 fave bands to 24 I think)

Drums: Joey Jordison / Travis Barker

Mine:

Singer: RJ Dio
Bass: Dude from Tool
Drums: Tommy Lee
Guitar: Eddie

But when they start scheming us the way these guys did, and we weren't particularly ready for it, anything can happen."

very good line up my friend

gotta love Dio and Eddie. Tommy Lee annihilates the drums. The Tool dude is a very close fourth for me. But Tool’s newer stuff kinda sucks. Plus Cliff Burton is legendary.

my dream band scenario’s:

Classic Metal:
Vocals: Phil Anselmo (if you haven’t heard Pantera you must right now)
Rhythm Guitar/backing vocals: Dave Mustaine
Lead Guitar: Jeff Hanneman because I like his style fits an Anselmo band better
Bass/Occasional lead vocals: Lemmy Kilmister
Drums: Pantera’s Drummer because he is insanity. either that or the drummer for motorhead’s ace of spades record

Classic Rock:

Vocals: Vince Neil
Guitar: Van Halen
Bass: I know he’s metal, but Cliff Burton would be great for this group.
Drums: Tommy Lee

So basically think Motley Crue but with shreddier guitar and more rhythmic bass.

I see rap shows up a lot on here so:

Rap Group:
Krs-One and Slug rapping
DJ Premier doing the beats.

Good call on the Tool bassist

Justin Chancellor is his name. Did not become the bassist until the Aenima album.

Gotta love Music

Singer Bon Scott, Deo and Chris Cornell (has mad pipes) oh Ronnie Van Zant was awesome too.

Bass Lemmy (motorhead is awesome) Cliff kicked ass (R.I.P)

Guitar Steve Ray Vaughn (genius, R.I.P) or
                 Slash (can play anything)

Drums Tommy Lee or Lars Ulrich

The future is uncertain... and the end is always near. JMorrison

Lars

one of the few actually talented people on Metallica’s current lineup. They were at their best when the lineup was Hetfield singing and rhythm guitar, Dave Mustaine (yes the singer and rhythm guitarist for Megadeth) playing lead, Cliff Burton on bass, and Lars on drums. Now you have Rob and Kirk who aren’t that great. Actually Rob is because he was insane outside of Metallica. Now Metallica’s new shit has ruined him. Kirk meanwhile has his songs (Whiplash) but he’s not great on every song. To that end I think he plays all his songs in drop-c or drop-d (can’t remember). Meaning he’s just playing really basic chords at a fast pace and since these are basic chords, that’s not very hard to do.

Hetfield and Lars however are actually really good. Hetfield’s the very finest rhythm guitarist and his voice is still great. And we all know what Lars can do on drums.

Really the only reason I love the Ride the Lightning album is because Cliff Burton was still the bassist.

It's so hard to narrow it to three

Singer 1.Jim Morrison (The Doors) 2.Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam) 3. Maynard James Keenan (Tool)

Guitarist 1. Jimi Hendrix (The Hendrix Experience- Band of Gypsys) 2. Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine- The Nightwatchmen) 3. Buckethead (Primus- Guns n Roses)

Bass 1. Les Claypool (Primus) 2.. Bootsy Collins (James Brown-Parliment) 3. Fieldy (Korn)

Drummer 1. John Bohnam (Led Zeppelin) 2. John Theodore (Mars Volta- One Day as a Lion) 3. Keith Moon (The Who)

Wherever I go, that's where I am.

my one problem with your list

Jimi Hendrix. He’s not a good guitarist by any means. I love how people who play random notes really fast are considered great guitarists. At least people like Halen and Murray actually play notes in their solos instead of randomly strumming (which if you really watch and study Hendrix, that’s all he does).

However, the rest of your top-3’s are very impressive.

If you haven't watch and studied Band of Gypsys performances...

Especially the ones from the Fillmore East, then please do. Jimi in his early days played to the crowd more than to his music, playing fast, with his teeth, behind his back, etc.

In these, Band of Gypsy Fillmore performances, he was pure soul and sound. The tone he established was unprecedented- running through a fuzz and wah but then also an octavia, that was custom made for him, and a uni-vibe that lends a wavering organ tone.

Listen to “Machine Gun” from these performances and Jimi’s sound was nothing about speed it was about pure sound. A sound he was creating to mimic the sounds and horrors of war. On “Who Knows” Jimi again is not focusing on speed but a funk driven improvisation to create a mesmerizing solo. On these recordings it is easy to hear why he is a master of extended notes, feedback and overall sound. He relied not on technical mastery but on a mastery of sound. When he did miss a note he quickly bent it until it fit.

Jimi is not the technical master, that some of the greats are, but he took guitar playing to another level and used it as his instrument for an outlet of his amazing interpretive, arranging and compositional talents. There is no one that has used a guitar to more fully express themselves then Jimi.

Thanks for the kick ass topic.

your welcome

and I checked out Machine Gun. Much much better. I take back what I said, but I can’t overlook his shit with the Hendrix Experience.

I can see that.

Since you liked Machine Gun, if you haven’t, check out some of the songs Jimi was working on when he died on albums like Voodoo Soup. Ezy Rider is one of my favorites.

Another good question: Who are your favorite songwriters? This may be the hardest of all. This is almost impossible to narrow down. I am thinking
1) Bob Dylan
2) John Lennon
3) Bob Marley
but this list could go on forever. I have to give my love to the founding fathers of this one though, and I guess they probably all need to give it up to Robert Johnson.
