The Absolute Worse-Case Scenario

In his second full season as the starting QB, Jamarcus Russell fails. The raiders are handed another horrific 4-12 and a corresponding top 5 draft pick.

Star-divide

I think last week Brianmulhall put out one hell of a debate topic in asking the question about who our starting QB should be this season.  It brought a lot of good information about what both Russell and Garcia bring to the team.  But what should be the team's next  move be if Jamarcus absolutely falls flat on his face during the 09 season.  Although all of us are surely hoping for success, Russell playing is no guarantee.  Especially given his young WR's, unproven Oline and the nasty defenses he'll be facing this yr (Giants, Steelers, Eagles, Cowboys, Ravens).

A good argument could be made that Jamarcus will only improve and build on what he did the last 3 games of the season (check the stat line against New England: 17 for 32, 242 yds, 2 TDs to 1 pick, 85.7 passer rating), but he's taken steps back before (see week 12, Denver to week 13 KC.   Wk 4 SD to Wk 6 after the bye, no less! NO)

Also, if the Raiders end up finishing another 4-12, 5-11 type season, and are given a top ten or top five pick, the Raiders may be exposed to a premier QB prosepct.  It seems next yr there are going to be some legitimate QB prospects in the draft such as Sam Bradford, Colt Mccoy, maybe even Tim Tebow and who knows who else will emerge during the 2009 college football season.

Another alternative option the raiders have is to sign a QB in free agency or trade one that has either ran out his welcome on his current team or for whatever reason is on the trade market.  There were reports that Cleveland wanted to draft Mark Sanchez making Derek Anderson and maybe even Brady Quinn on the trade market.  Also during the 08 season, it was said that Donovan Mcnabb wanted out of Philadelphia.  Other QBs scheduled to enter free agency: Philip Rivers and Eli Manning, though their most likely to be resigned by their current team.  Also, however, Kyle Orton who put up solid numbers in 08 might not resign with the Broncos after this season if Denver feels they have found a QB of the future.

So, the point of the post is to bring about the hypothetical question, what should the Raiders do IF Russell, given the starting QB spot, doesn't show anywhere near the productiviity he should in Year 3?

I think we will still

Give him another shot even if we go 0-16 which we won’t for sure.

Amazing, Jamarcus Russell hands off to McFadden who pitches it back to Russell who finds Darrius Heyward Bey in the Middle of the Field wide open 30, 20,10,5 Touchdown Raiders! Amazing. This telecast is Brought to you by Cable.

For sure

and also don’t forget that there can alot of different reasons for failure after all Football is a team sport. The QB may be the leader on the field but if you don’t have good line play, recievers who can get open and make catches, running backs to mix in the run with the pass even good defensive play to keep you in games are all critical. Any number of things can contribute to a QB having a bad season. One man cannot carry a team.

I know.

but what if Jamarcus’ accuracy is horrific and he doesn’t read defenses at all this year? If he manages to regress from last year, I find it hard to not atleast consider other alternatives.

JRuss

Maybe I am just being negative but he is not acting like a QB that is hungry to learn and hungry to win. If he has a mediocre year I say get rid of him and get someone that can step in take charge!

If Jamarcus regresses substantially from his second half last year

then we have no option but to go in a differant direction, however i think this is unlikely and as long as he has a solid season he will coninue to be our QB for the foreseeable future.
TBH i thought he had a pretty solid season last year for his rookie season in the first half Kiffen hardly let him throw which statistically made him look horrible (its hard to look good when the coach throws the ball 12 times in the whole game) but thoughout the season he took really good care of the ball and had a 13:8 TD:INT ratio (no bad for someone with accuracy issues) and even after Cable let him throw more often and we got more balance he continued that and had some great games. Young QB’s are going to be inconsistant and he is STILL one of the youngest QB’s in the league, leadership will come with time – how great were any of our leadership skills at that age and in Cable he has a great mentor. I really believe this guy could be a great player and would hate to see us turn on him and force him out becasue he WILL come back to haunt us

I totally agree with you

I think Jamarcus will have a solid yr in 09. I dont think 3000 yds, 20 tds is out of the question, even in the Raiders run first offense.

but if he regresses on the field and shows the fans the same careless demeanor (which, can also be quite misleading) then i think we’re forced to go another direction.

Well

If this year is a complete and utter bust, if things go completely to hell like a couple of years ago, and if they do lose faith in JaMarcus, the good news is there should be a lot of good quarterbacks available in next year’s draft.

On the other hand, if things just don’t go very well, but are not terrible, maybe Al will finally began to put some serious effort in the O-Line and some more defensive personnel (though no more defensive backs, think we’re pretty set there).

I'm not wooried about it

IF he has a bad year oh-well, This guy’ will win in the NFL and have a good career.
We are still rebuilding, and with so many new faces it will take time for things to come together. I am excited about our team and the talented group of young players we have.
DHB will recover and Mc Fadden will do some damage this year, but the ome player who I think will suprise is Louis Murphy…..Go Raiders

How many bad years

can you say oh well to? So far there is not enough proof to make the comment:

This guy’ will win in the NFL and have a good career.

This is his make or break year.

I dont think so mike.

I think he deserves his FULL three seasons as a STARTER. If he struggles in his third year then by all means write him off.

Bare with the young qb.

You gotta remember

his first 1 1/2 seasons was with Kiffin who didn’t want him to begin with plus the hold out in the first year didn’t help his situation. At the end of last year, basically his 1st year he looked quite good. So it’s only his 2nd year and with a new QB coach, and a passing coordinator. When does the 3 years start.

Its just not 3 years give him 3 years in the same system with the same coaches and then you will have more info to rate him.

The GIve him a 4th year to figure it out option in the poll.

You all do realize it’s only a 6 year deal right? That’s alot of time to figure it out for only 2 years left.

I guarantee

we would take so much Heat from NFL Network and Especially ESPN if we did that.

Amazing, Jamarcus Russell hands off to McFadden who pitches it back to Russell who finds Darrius Heyward Bey in the Middle of the Field wide open 30, 20,10,5 Touchdown Raiders! Amazing. This telecast is Brought to you by Cable.

That's for sure

Teams out there worse than the Raiders, yet it’s always the Raiders that are at the top of the criticism list. Nigh a word about the Chiefs and Seahawks, for example.

haha..or the broncos??

what if the raiders had THAT offseason. we wouldve gotten raped by the media!!!

u kno man, i’m over it. i understand that ESPN is definitely NOT the best source for knowledge.

Yep

Despite the Raiders’ “outcast” image, they have less personal drama than just about any other team.

worse case?

Worse case wouldnt turn out good for j-russ!he would have to do what walker did and resign for less and take a back up roll. But then again how can he be worse?Yr 3,2nd yr with same coach.Better qb coach, better o-line for ’09!I see j making small improvements here and there next season, not too much cause he really doesnt need to change much. With our core of backs mixed with a strong rushing game,he should see more players open.I say we start Fargas, let him beat up some d-linemen in the 1st,mix in bush in the 2nd to continue the onslaught against the opposing D,then in the 3rd when big guys start to get a little winded you throw mcfadden and that speed at them!Thats my idea of a little raider shock and awe!Its worked for the giants, the titans and sometimes when the saints had a healthy duece/bush combo.

This is what i think

If we draft another QB prospect, feel good and happy about it for a few months. Then he starts and does what every young QB does, struggles.

Jruss did very well to end the season, and is doing a lot of good things this off season. He flew all the WR’s out to Alabama to hold a lil camp of his own to develop chemistry.

Every1 wants a quick fix at QB, its not going to happen. Russell is a work in progress and is showing signs of life. He finished the season well and is having a good off season so far.

Hes young im tired of hearing this debate. We drafted him now we have to bare with the growing pains of a young QB. Let him play his 3 seasons as a starter before we make a judgment.

so if he moves backwards

from the last 8 games of the season (he had some pretty solid numbers), you wouldn’t atleast CONSIDER your options??

Don't confuse me with the facts, my mind is made up!!

by naq92 on Jul 11, 2009 12:41 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Always consider the options

But they’re not good. Drafting another QB means starting from square one again, and bringing another rookie to a team that is not concerned enough about protecting him from getting sacked. The other option is trading for someone, but what big name QB is going to want to come to a team that’s rebuilding as opposed to a team that’s in serious contention? Otherwise we get another Brooks, another Collins, another Culpepper (and yep, at the risk of getting yelled at), or another Garcia.

by rightnasty on Jul 13, 2009 6:46 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

all those QBs have succeeded under

situations that fit them well….except for brooks i guess. but ya, this post was not to say that I don’t think we should put our faith elsewhere. I think Russell developed quite well in the second half of last year.

Bro, I cant WAIT for football season.

Yeah, me neither

I still remember when I really lost faith. It was a game 2 or 3 years ago against the 49ers, Walter at QB. The first half went pretty well, but then they completely fell apart in the second half. Correct if I’m wrong, but I seem to remember a play where Walter threw a screen pass to Jordan who proceeded to drop it and then just leave it there. Then 49er defenders came up and just picked it up and took possession. I can’t remember whether it was ruled a lateral or a fumble, but whatever the case, I thought to myself, “My god. This is the future of the Raiders. Walter and Jordan, two players who I absolutely can’t stand.” Then losing Randy Moss for a 4th round draft pick. What a slap in the face. Belichick might as well have slapped me personally. Then last year, I hate to see a rookie starting at QB when they probably should be spending the first 1-2 years on the bench learning, so I wasn’t expecting much.

This is the first year I begin to have hope again.

by rightnasty on Jul 14, 2009 4:47 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

i had hope last year

but the thing is there was no way Russell was going to do well with Kwame and Cornell Green at the tackles. I like Mario Henderson, but i guess we’ll see about Barnes. I know in the draft most ppl wanted Crabtree, but I think Eugene Monroe wouldve been one hell of a pick. but oh well, what’s done is done. Besides, if you look at the current rosters, the raiders aren’t as bad as drafting as most ppl seem to think.

keep building around him

the oline could use some help and maybe the recievers could use some time to develop lso he needs consistency in coaching and system/scheme think peyton manning he had tom moore for all 11 years look at him

Yes

It’s kind of a shame that while they’ll keep track of a QB’s incompletes, they don’t keep track of receivers dropping passes, tipping passes into the hands of defenders, failing to get to the ball when they should have, or managing to be out of bounds when do catch the pass. Likewise, I wish they’d keep track of each lineman’s pancakes and sacks given up.

by rightnasty on Jul 13, 2009 6:53 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

ya, keeping better stats sounds like a good idea.

like how about carries per fumble?? or some kind of pancake to sack ratio. catches per drop. the NFL could use much better statistics.
