Things I thought were interesting were that Fargas is listed as the starter with Bush at the third back spot, im assuming that McFadden is number 2 as he will be all over the field and DHB is listed as the 2nd reciever but will be interesting to see what happens when Walker comes back.  Alston and Brown are both listed as starters for the OLB spot.

AHHHH WE  ARE SOOOOO CLOSE - BRING IT ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Walker and Sands

Two notable absences from this depth chart are Javon Walker and Terdell Sands. Walker’s absence is explainable because he is on the training camp PUP list and does not count against the 80-man roster. Once he is activated, someone will need to be released. I can only chalk up Sand’s absence as an oversight, because he obviously is going to be a part of the DT rotation this season, despite some people’s wish that he not be a Raider.

Slade Norris destroyed the periodic table, because he only recognizes the element of surprise.

interesting to see

he’s not there. I didn’t catch that. What I did catch, Desmond Bryant is in the top-4 DT’s. Bet that’s got you happy Adam.

Versatility in Backups

If Warren and Sands can handle the NT duties, the Raiders need a UT behind Kelly that can disrupt things. I like Bryant for that spot because he’s a bit like Jay Richardson, who can play both DE and UT depending on the situation. The Raiders need those type of versatile guys at the back end of the 53-man roster. Joseph and Boschetti just cannot provide that kind of depth.

For the same reason I’m hoping the Raiders can find a place for Marcel Reece and Marcus Johnson on the 53-man roster. Johnson plays multiple OL positions, making him a pretty valuable backup, and Reece can be a hybrid FB/TE/Other and is a mismatch for any LB in the game. Unfortunately I think he’d have to beat out Nick Miller for a roster spot, so it may not happen.

couldn't agree more on Johnson

but I think Reece will be one more year on the practice squad. We already have two FB in Neal and O’Neal. Though after Neal leaves (I presume after this year) I think you’ll see him be made active. O’Neal would be the starter with Reece coming in on pass plays to create mismatches. Maybe even use his speed on handoffs to Reece. I think Reece could be something special in Oakland’s future.

Agree on Reece

He is bound for the practice squad again to be ready in case Neal or O’Neal are injured. Hopefully he and O’Neal will be the 2 FBs on the roster next year.

subject to the waiver wire?

by naq92 on Aug 12, 2009 8:03 PM PDT up reply actions

I Believe So

Players have to clear waivers to be put on the practice squad. Once a player is on a practice squad, they are technically free agents and can sign with another team that wants to claim that player off another team’s practice squad for their active roster. Also, I’m not sure exactly how long a player is eligible to be on a team’s practice squad, but I believe it’s somewhere around 2 years.

I Just Can't Wait

I need to see some football. These last couple days after the Hall Of Fame Game was tough. I need to watch some football now.

I can’t wait to see the new players. I remember just looking at the players from the two rosters at the Hall Of Fame Game and thinking how happy they must’ve been scout their own players. Now, it is our turn.

Also, I hate to admit this, but……I am so done with this baseball stuff. I just realized that I really don’t have any love for baseball until the A’s get to the playoffs. But still, I probably won’t watch any of the games. Am I alone.

Woo, glad I got this off my back.

I don't agree with this depth chart

Cornell Green should be a back up. If Khalif Barnes gets healthy then plug him in at RT. I’d rather see Slade Norris be the starter over Alston and Brown. Mike Mitchell should be the starter over Branch and Mike Huff should start over Eugene. Michael Bush should be the number 1 RB with McFadden being the change of pace home run hitter/hybrid receiver. And I think Brandon Myers should be ahead of Tony Stewart.

Hopefully these changes get made after pre-season unless the listed starters prove me wrong. Also, I hope HIggins is still the punt returner with Justin Miller as the kick returner.

Yeah I also heard somewhere that he looked like he was doing well in coverage

but as much as I have screamed from the mountains about how much I am looking forward to see Mitchell play and play with Branch I think it makes sense to start Hiram to begin with the season – a bit of experience next to Branch as Branch missed a lot of last year and was behind other players on the depth chart so didnt get heaps of snaps at safety before he got injured

Definitely worthy

I’m just lazy otherwise it would have been a fanpost. And those that think Terdell Sands was an oversight, I’m not on the same page. I have the same hopes (prayers) that everyone has about him. Space eater, run stopper, but afer everthying I’ve read, he just makes our o-lineman look well above average. They put him down to say pick it up or go home. I want him to turn it around, but apparently he does not have it.
P.S. If Walker can becom healthy and can be the Javon of old, Schillens and Javon can be scary as hell. As long as Russell can get the ball to them.

Add

Murphy, DHB, and both Millers, plus Bush & McFadden out of the backfield and our pass O looks pretty good this year! This should be the year people get off J-Russ’s back. If not, well I guess he’ll have no one to blame but himself. ( Maybe the O-line )

my one big problem

Bey is listed as a starter. Green I understand because Pears has definitely not been doing anything good in camp so far. But Bey should not be starting over Murphy or Higgins. But when Walker gets off PUP, I bet you he’ll be on the starting spot.

maybe cable wants to give him some work

and he has definitely improved over the course of camp. I just don’t like to give up a starting spot form Murphy or Walker or even higgins for a guy who’s shown a lot of inconsistency.

I beg to differ

Higgins wasn’t all that bad last year, especially towards the end when our offense really got rolling. My preference is for him to be in the slot and returning punts, but if he needs to start we’ll be getting an amazingly dynamic playmaker. Fast as hell, elusive (as evidenced by his prowess on returns), and seems to always get separation (hence why I want him to play against less-skilled nickel corners). The only knocks on Higgins are that he still runs some sloppy routes and is inconsistent catching the ball. Though what do you expect from a third-round guy who only saw any real playing time last year.

As for Walker, he’s looking much better in drills (yes i know these are merely drills) than he did last year. He’s looking faster and crisper on his routes than last year. And here’s the big thing, his knee appears to be finally fixed up and he is at the least 90% healthy. Which is probably healthier than he ever was at any point last year. If he can carry that over to team drills and preseason games, I firmly believe he deserves a starting spot.

they both are definitely better so far in training camp

but if you watch the actual games…walker hasnt been decent for atleast 2 or 3 seasons. JLH definitely played better at the end of the season, but when his career started, he was pretty damn inconsistent too. I just think DHB going against some top notch corners wouldnt be that bad for him…and im also pretty high on the guy. at the very least, he’s a first round talent.

Don't confuse me with the facts, my mind is made up!!

by naq92 on Aug 13, 2009 10:24 AM PDT up reply actions

yeah he's definitely first-round talent

but like you said Higgins started out inconsistent, so let’s let DHB follow sort of the same path. Ease him in. Give him some action in the regular season, but don’t start him. If he starts to get pretty good, then bump up his playing time until you get him to a starter. DHB is a long-term project and should be eased in as he goes.

fair enough

but why do you think DHB is a long-term project?

i mean he did come from a pro-style offense, and he seems to be running decent routes and catching the ball better over the last week and a half or so. i cant put it against him that he’s getting shut down by nnamdi too, cuz thats nnamdi..haha

Because

just like Russell, we need to give him time to adjust to the big time. I always hear rookies say how fast the pro game is. All in good time my friend!!

by sunelf77 on Aug 13, 2009 1:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Rookie WR's

with the maybe 1 exception every couple of years or so, take a good two or three years to develop. They have to learn all the routes, all the plays, get their timing down, they have to learn how to separate form the DB’s, what to do when you have the ball, when to look back for the pass, so on and so forth.

With DHB, there’s two things that might make this a longer road for him.

1. He should have stayed one more year in college. His coaches even said so. And coaches are usually the guys who will always say “he’s perfect, every team should snatch him up. he’ll be ready immediately” and all that good crap. His coaches actually said he really should have stayed for his senior year.

2. He has to work on his catching. yes I know he’s doing much better in drills and 7-7’s. But that’s far from an actual game. Where there’s 11 defenders looking to put you on the injury cart and the ruckus of 60,000 screaming fans and the weight of their judging eyes on your shoulder. Let’s see how he does catching in all that.

hmm...

i think you overstate the difference between 7 on 7 and 11 on 11. its not like all 11 guys are gonna be after him anyways. and lets be honest, being covered by the other teams #2 corner is a HUGE dropoff from being covered by nnamdi.

i agree w/ everything else though. and i definitely see him as a 2-3 year project, like every other receiver. i just dont know why you had murphy ahead of him in the 1st place.

Don't confuse me with the facts, my mind is made up!!

by naq92 on Aug 13, 2009 6:02 PM PDT up reply actions

fair enough on the 7-7's

but the big thing was that those defenders will be looking to hurt you. In practice players just want to make themselves look good to make the team or get a starting job. When he goes out for an actual game, those defenders will be doing whatever it takes to win, mainly trying to hit you as hard as humanly possible.

Regarding Murphy: Every time DHB takes a step forward, Murphy’s is already two step ahead. Murphy to me will be like a Schilens and bring immediate impact though he has nowhere near the potential of DHB. DHB could potentially be the greatest deep threat in the NFL in the prime of his career, Murphy will probably just be your basic, nothing really special receiver. I like to think of him as Jerrico Cothcery type receiver. Except faster with not as good of hands though pretty close.

Murphy to me equals faster Jerrico Cotchery

DHB equals potential Houshmanzadeh of speed threats.

hey

if murphy becomes cotchery and DHB becomes Housh, we’re pretty fuckin solid!

i know its complete hindsight at this point, but something worth looking at is how DHB drew double coverage with the 1st string. see how easily that opened Chaz up. it seems other teams respect DHB a lot more than most of our own do. and thats all that matters.

ill be honest though, i love murphy (like the rest of everyone on this blog), i think he could be a solid WR this year. but i think DHB is set up so that he’ll take a good beating from the press no matter what he does. so i think sometimes you gotta take the knocks on him w/ a grain of salt.

Don't confuse me with the facts, my mind is made up!!

by naq92 on Aug 14, 2009 12:28 PM PDT up reply actions

I noticed that

if that does transition over into the regular season and DHB’s playing against Nnamdi in practice really helps, then I’d be okay with starting him or at least giving him some snaps at the #2 receiver spot. Just so long as Schilens is at #1.

nnamdi has GOT to be helpin out DHB, theres no way going against the NFL’s best corner every day in practice can not help you.

does what # they are on the depth chart matter so long as they’re both on the field?

i completely disagree

there was no reason for him to stay in college..there was nothing to gain there..he was the best that he would be at that level.his offense just wasnt very good..catching the ball at this level is mental..roy williams was a probowl reciever then as of late hes been struggling catching the ball same with braylon edwards …dhb will be fine catching the ball, you dont make it to this level without being able to do so, the extra 4 dlineman wont effect him, and i like his attitude and work ethic

As said earlier

I think a named starter is irrelevant. All of them are going to be out there, it’s just a matter of who’s going to be out there for the first snap. After that, I think we’ll stick to who’s playing well and rotate from there.

I'm fine with Fargas

McFadden and bush will be getting more carries anyway. Fargas is still a good runner though. He’s still a fast guy, doesn’t fumble very often, has great ball carrier vision and always sees the hole, definitely doesn’t shy from contact, and will always charge into a defender for some extra yards. Plus he’s a great blocker. Really the only downside to Fargas is he isn’t a good receiver out of the backfield and that willingness to bowl over defenders isn’t always a good thing since Fargas isn’t exactly a power back.

However he’s still talented and i think should see a good bit of carries.

Was surprised to see him first based on what I’ve read while trying to catch up today. Who’s this Nick Miller guy and Alston should cut out the steroids. Didn’t he and Scott put on a lot of muscle this off season? Glad Burgess and Walter are gone but, sorry to see Sulak and Joseph cut. They both seemed to have heart but I guess not the skills….

Nick Miller

Has actually had a hell of a camp.

5'9" 180 lbs

Sounds like it. He could be a freak. Special Teams maybe. Let him run the ball back a few times in pre-season and sign him if he can break.

if he can be a good returner

as in Justin Miller good, Justin Miller might be cut. Hasn’t been all that great of a corner, even if it is a dime corner. Darrick Brown is actually been doing okay in camp and might get the fourth corner spot.

Nick miller meanwhile can come in, be a returner (preferably kick and not punt where Higgins needs to be) and play the 6th. WR spot. I honestly believe 6 receivers is a good number for this team. My projected receiver depth chart with N. Miller

1. Schilens
2. Walker
3. Higgins
4. Murphy
5. DHB
6. N. Miller

(Note: there would be a lot of rotation at the #3 spot so that all the receivers get some work and to play in certain situations)

One thing that stands out, they’re all young, they’re all fairly unproven, and Schilens and Walker were injured last year. So having six fast receivers give us a great deal of raw talented depth and plenty of rotation options for Cable to play with to mess with opposing defenses. And that’s without Mcfadden getting time n the slot as he has frequently throughout training camp.

WR Depth Chart

My WR depth chart had the same 6 guys on it. I doubt Justin Miller would be released after signing a new contract with the team over the offseason. The Raiders can keep 6 WR if they only keep 9 offensive lineman.

Also, I think dram meant Frantz Joseph.

I don't know about Justin

Nick has been a better WR than Miller a CB. If Nick can outperform or equal Justin in kick return ability, Justin might be sent out with Darrick Brown taking the dime corner spot. If Justin Miller does outperform Nick Miller (as I predict he will), then Nick should absolutely be put on the practice squad and perhaps only carry 5 WR.

Justin Miller

Did show some promise at CB the last couple games. I doubt he can be replaced by Nick Miller. Justin Miller is waaay too talented at KR.

Higgins

If Higgins keeps playing like he did for the three games at the end of last season, I could see him at 1 or 2. I’m still a little skeptical of Walkers ‘mystery’ surgery although by all accounts it’s done him a world of good. We’ll see.

I like him

just as a returner, but he’s an exciting receiver also. Always a chance to break one with that guy! Just wish his hands were softer.

i like it.

hasnt miller taken some carries in TC also? maybe he could make the team, return kicks, 6th WR/ 4th HB? the more versatility, the better

Don't confuse me with the facts, my mind is made up!!

yes he has

Miller has been getting some work at HB and isn’t too shabby with all that speed and athleticism. Maybe a carry or two ever now and then just to mix things up.

I'm a Nick Miller fan.

The more I read about him the more I like him. He just complicates everything — in a good way. His versitility reminds me of McFadden. Evedently he’s been nicknamed “scrappy” in practice. Wonder if he can throw too.

thank you and welcome back

and if you mean William Joesph, he’s still here.

Darren or Bush should start

I think its because Fargas is a better pass blocker than the rest

Darren McFadden should start and get 15 carries

in the regular season he should get 20 to 23 and 5-10 receptions. he should be the second coming of brian westbrook. i expect a probowl year from mcfadden as long as HE STAYS HEALTHY.
