Sources: Tom Cable Punched Defensive Assistant

While watching ESPN, I came across a "this just in" story while Jay Harris was anchoring the desk along with NFL analyst Adam Schefter. Nonetheless, I was surprised and even more disappointed with the report of Tom Cable punching defensive assistant Randy Hanson some time ago.

Star-divide

According to a report Monday on the Web site National Football Post, Raiders defensive assistant Randy Hanson was punched in the jaw by another member of the team's coaching staff during an Aug. 5 altercation at Oakland's training camp headquarters at the Napa Valley Marriott.

Multiple NFL and Raiders sources have confirmed the victim of the alleged assault was Hanson, a third-year assistant who is in his first season with the team under the title "assistant coach-defense." Two NFL sources have told FanHouse the attacker was Raiders' first-year head coach Tom Cable, and "that Hanson never saw it coming."

David White of the San Francisco Chronicle first reported that a Raiders assistant was involved in an altercation about three hours ago. A couple of hours later, Nancy Gay confirmed that it was Tom Cable as noted by David White in his report.

A Raiders official declined to comment. Cable will meet with reporters after today's 3:30 p.m. practice.

More as details continue to emerge ...

It's almost explaining time, coach.

Wow! Wow wow wow wow! Just when you thought Raider Nation would make it through a training camp sans any major controversy, Nancy “Professional Lair” Gay comes out and decides today is the day to stir the preverbal pot. Now, from the outset, when I learned it was Nancy “Prolific Raider Hater” Gay that broke the story, I was skeptical. After all, she has “broken stories/lies” about the Raiders many, many, many times in the past. In fact, her stories have fallen through so many times that she is no longer a paid journo, but just another one of us lowly bloggers; and there is some real justice to that fact, but thats another story for another day.

Nevertheless, at the start of the day, the story broke that a raider coach punched assistant coach Hanson and broken his jaw, thus sending him to the hospital. A Napa police report stated that the coach had been assaulted, but by whom Hanson was not telling. Throughout the day, this story gained momentum with all sorts of speculation, and then there was Nancy “I Hate Al” Gay. Some time in the afternoon she decided to post that it was Cable whom had struck Hanson after the two had had an argument. Furthermore, it was said that Hanson “never saw it coming”, meaning Cable cold cocked/sucker punched the guy. This is totally out of character for the normally mild mannered Cable, but hey, when it comes to the Raiders, the media will run with anything negative, and they sure did with this juicy Nancy “Lacks All Integrity” Gay report.

By the time practice was over and Cable was ready to address the media, the local Bay Area journos were in a frenzy, ready to pounce on what “had to be true”! After all, its the Raiders! Cable, of course, towed the company line, declined to comment on an “internal matter”, and this was all that was needed for the media to put the nail in the coffin on the Raiders offseason, as well as this story.

At least until the truth started to come out, and from some very, very, very unlikely sources. Mark Schlereth, BSPN NFL analyst, former Donkey, and well known Raider Hater, talked with Cable on the phone and discovered that no punches were thrown. There was an altercation/argument of some kind, but Cable certainly did not punch Hanson. (It should be noted, Cable has known Schlereth since he was in college, and the two are great friends. Such good friends in fact that Schlereth actually complimented the Raider run game on TV today, the first Raider compliment I have ever heard from Schlereth.) Then, almost in tandem, Adam Schefter, also known to be on the Hater side of the Raider Nation equation, reported much of the same. All of a sudden it was looking as if Nancy “Commitment to Nonsense” Gay had infected the mainstream with another false story, months after losing her job for doing the exact same thing over and over again.

And then, in the evening, reality hit home. @Movethesticks reported on Twitter from a very reliable source what seems to have really happened. It seems Hanson was in a heated argument D-Coordinator Marshall, and that Hanson crossed the line in some way. Cable, whiteness to this, got really pissed and threw a chair. Either the chair got a little too close to Hanson, or he was using it to support his weight, but the next thing you know, Hanson hits his face on a cabinet, breaking a facial bone. Honestly, I think Cable lost his temper, threw a chair, and that accidentally led to Hanson’s injury, but by no means did Cable intend the guy harm. That would be totally out of character for such a mild mannered guy with such respect for everyone around him.

Yes, BSPN, NFL Net, and everyone else, it appears, were taken for a ride. Caught hook, line, and sinker in another Nancy “Gotcha” Gay story/lie. It turns out, she couldn’t even get the injury correct, and thats what I call “classic” Nancy Gay reporting, err lack thereof. I never thought I would be saying this, but thanks Schlereth and Schefter, you boys outdid yourselves today.

Shocked It Was Cable

When I read this morning that defensive assistant Randy Hanson had gotten into an altercation with another Raiders coach earlier this month, I’ll admit I wasn’t that surprised. In his time with the Raiders Hanson has been extremely fiery and shown his willingness to stand up to authority. Last season he spoke out against then head coach Lane Kiffin’s interference with the defensive scheme during the Opening Night nightmare against Denver, stating that if Mike Shanahan had the Raiders’ offense it would have been 1000-0 (rather than 41-14).

I was shocked, however, to learn that it was Cable who delivered the blow to Hanson. Could Hanson have once again been bad-mouthing the he head coach?

The last time Hanson had a disagreement with a head coach, Al Davis supported Hanson, and used it as more ammunition to fire Lane Kiffin. What on earth does he do now if Tom Cable attacked Hanson?

You can follow David White yourself or just keep refreshing the page like I do.

The chant is spelled “bumaye.” It means “kill ’em.” Ali fans chanted it in Zaire, Raiders doing it in Napa.

Cable Bumaye!

Is there any doubt now that Cable has the team behind him? Too bad he’ll probably get suspended if the facts of the story hold up. Adam Schefter’s report on Monday Night Countdown said that the situation is “murky”, and that Hanson’s report may not be accurate. That would seem to contradict Nancy Gay’s reporting.

I want to hear the whole story

before I form my opinion but you cannot have the Head Coach breaking assistant coaches jaws in a professional enviroment. If Cable did this he is showing himself to not be up to the job of being a Head Coach in the NFL.

has definitely been MUCH better to the raiders that Cable has…..

i remember him reading a quote saying something like sometimes a fight is the proper way to handle things…it was about fights between the players, though, but i guess it can be used for him too…

eh, i dont mind if Cable punched some fool in the mouth. at least it shows he CARES…

McGovern said the victim was not pressing charges and that Napa Police considered the matter closed.

"Basically victim stated he did not want any further police action or police involvement," said McGovern. "As far as we’re concerned — unless the victim re-contacts us and is willing to cooperate — the case is closed."

guys, guys, guys

this is all a lot of nothing about nothing. 3 weeks after Sands punched Lechler we heard about it, and what was the end result, nothing. I remember reading on this site that there was speculation that Sands would be released, or Lechler wouldn’t sign with the Raiders, and guess what happened, nothing. Sands is still here albeit possibly getting cut if he doesn’t start to show something, and Lechler resigned with a nice hefty raise. This is football, and all the guys have a high macho component to their personalities. This happened 10 days ago, nothing is going to happen. Al won’t do a thing, last year he stood up for Hansen because he loathed Kiffin. I will guess that Hansen was there today when the players were singing “Cable bumaye”. I will also speculate that there was a lot of laughing and giggling going on. This is great for team chemistry. These guys will run through a wall for Cable and that is what you want. He is building a team, something that has been missing for 6 years.

There is a big difference

between a couple of players getting into a fight and the Head Coach breaking one of his assistant coaches jaw. The Head Coach is there to be the leader and the adult and this is not how leaders act. I think it’s safe to say Tom Flores and John Madden didn’t go around beating their coaches up so no this isn’t a return to the Raiders of old.

by sirbed on Aug 17, 2009 5:11 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

At this point in time

no one has any idea what happened or why it happened so everything is just speculation. I don’t know what the point is about Hansen’s jaw being broken, what relevance does that have? Since this happened 10 days ago, and Hansen wouldn’t tell the police who hit him I suspect this story is a little more complicated than is being reported now. Would your feelings be different if Hansen took a swing at Cable and Cable decked him? If Hansen was screaming and yelling at 65 yr. old Marshall and Cable got between them and decked Hansen would that make a difference? Hansen apparently is known as a pretty volatile guy judging by his run in with Kiffin last year and other reports so I suspect when this is all sorted out there was good reason for this scuffle. Apparently the players thought it was so. Time will tell. Cable bumaye!

by Laoren on Aug 17, 2009 5:32 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You really don't see the difference

between some scrum between players and the Head Coach breaking a man’s jaw? That’s assault and Cable is lucky he hasn’t been arrested if that is what happenend. Even if Hansen was yelling or being a jerk the appropriate response isn’t to break his jaw. Cable is there to set the tone and to teach the players to act like professionals and this is not how professionals act.

Life is not black and white...

In a closed meeting with a supervisor I am pretty sure there are things that could be said or done that would warrant physical interaction. As reports continued to come out, it certainly did not sound like Cable punched Hanson.

We have no idea what Hanson may have said or threatened to Marshall.

I want the old Raiders fire back, I want the old physical meanness, I want the old fear and dread teams had of coming into Oakland, knowing they weren’t in for just a football game: it was a nasty old school brawl. Cable is putting his team, his owner, and the League on notice that he is not taking any shit from anyone. No whiners, no prima donnas, , just good, merciless, hard-nosed football. I Love this and im NOT sorry

Great to see the Coach not only preaching being tough and punching people in the mouth on the field but actually demonstrating how to do it hope the Defense was paying attention because if Cable has to demonstrate this new Defensive play multiple times we may run out of assistants.

In all seriousness though from what I have seen of Cable he seems like the last person to punch someone in the mouth for no reason and the fact the assistant wouldnt even tell them who punched him that would support that there is more to it but it seems like they have handled it in house which is how it should be. I think the players would LOVE this from their coach. Hey if Mario goes down maybe Cable will suit up and play some Left Tackle hehehe

There is a published report of Tom Cable denying that he punched Randy Hanson on August 5, 2009.

According to AOL Fanhouse, Cable hit Hanson on Aug. 5 for unknown reasons. A report filed with the Napa Police Department describes an unnamed 41-year-old assistant coach being treated at the Queen of the Valley Hospital for a jaw injury, which the victim alleges was caused by an unidentified member of the Raiders coaching staff.

But Cable told ESPN’s Mark Schlereth later Monday that no punches were thrown.

What is it with people and messing with other peoples legitimate fanposts? Saint? I mean, its not like its on the front page. Instead its pigeonholed in this Fan Post that quotes Nancy Gay as a reasonable source with no explanation.

This fanpost is two lines of actual commentary mixed in with 2 cited sources. It barely even qualifies as a fanpost, but rather a fan shot, and my Fan Post gets bounced? Wow! WOW!

I was gonna contribute today too, but whats the point if its just gonna get jacked by the overzealous? Messing with legitimate fanposts is not the way to build content or readership, and that has to be Blogging 101.

This fanpost is two lines of actual commentary mixed in with 2 cited sources. It barely even qualifies as a fanpost, but rather a fan shot, and my Fan Post gets bounced? Wow! WOW!

It’s kind of, um, a big deal and that’s why I made the post. There’s really nothing else I could add to it. I’m sorry that your post was deleted.

yea....

its really nothing against you. I liked your fan post really, and I think it was totally legit, but if one was going to be deleated, errr.

I think both should have been allowed to stay up.

but I think decisions like this, when it comes to legitimate fanposts, should be left up to him. He has always been a very reasonable/responsible site manager/admin.

Looking at it more closely...

I think your post should have remained (and not because Saint moved it to the fp). As for “bitter admin from AN”, you have me terribly confused with someone else.

Originally, I thought it wad s a good call by LiveAdam because I do see repeat posts that could have gone into the original post. But this was not the case with your post. I’ve been wrong before.

I'm here to talk about the past.

Yea.....

its all good, I just like to take shots at AN. When you have a failed musician with no life who like to thinks he is James Tayloresque and writes songs called cellular banana (Nico) while banning people for almost nothing, taking shots is whats gonna happen.

James Tayloresque!

ROFL, I almost died of laughter when I heard his music. In the end, its obvious the guy has an Ego the size of a house, cause to call your own crappy music James Tayloresque takes juevos, or a mental disability. If its the latter, I recind all negativity aimed at him, as its not his fault hes disabled.

I think Laoren has it nailed. Only thing I could add is that this is football, and people get hit, sometimes in the mouth. May turn out to be the best thing that’s happened for our team in the past 6 years. Maybe somebody should have jacked up ol’ bed&breakfast back during the Shell 2 administration.

Cable obviously has no patience with people who are not with the plan. That’s great.

Assume Cable Gets Suspended

Assume for a moment that, whatever Cable did that caused Hanson to break his jaw, the Commissioner’s Office suspends Cable for 2 games. Who would you want to see as the head coach for those games? Paul Hackett and Ted Tollner have both been head coaches at the collegiate level, as well as offensive coordinators in the NFL. John Marshall has been an NFL coach forever. So who would you want wearing the headphones and holding the red flag?

Slade Norris destroyed the periodic table, because he only recognizes the element of surprise.

I’d go with Tollner or Hackett. Just let Marshall do his thing on defense.

by Rated-R Superstar on Aug 18, 2009 9:55 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm with you

Probably go with Hackett. Marshall has his hands full trying to teach the defense to be disciplined. That’s a job and a half.

by Rusty23 on Aug 18, 2009 9:57 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'd go with Willie Brown

because I love ex-Raiders. This move probably has no logic but i’m just spitballing here. No matter who it is they’re just a filler until Cable is back.

Let the investigation begin surrounding Tom Cable and his possible altercation with Randy Hanson.

The NFL is investigating reports that Oakland Raiders coach Tom Cable got into an altercation that sent one of his assistants to the hospital.

Spokesman Greg Aiello says the league is looking into the situation to try to determine the facts of what happened.

A report filed with the Napa Police Department describes an unnamed 41-year-old Raiders assistant coach being treated at the Queen of the Valley Hospital for a jaw injury, which the victim alleges was caused by an unidentified member of the Raiders coaching staff on Aug. 5.

One thing I have been pondering......

If Hanson is still with the Raiders, towing the comp line, working in Alameda, and refusing to talk to the cops, what can Goodell do? And if it really was an accident as I suspect it was, is it really worth a suspension? I dunno, but I doubt the league will have any basis to move forward if no one cooperates.

Code of Silence. Hanson will never get another job in the NFL if he breaks the code of silence. I think this goes away no that the truth is beginning to trickle out.

It’s gotta be tough to be a raider fan right now. Reading the quotes from players about another distraction, etc. Hang in there Raider fans, Al can’t live foreever (or can he??).

by Drullin'OverDaCards on Aug 18, 2009 4:04 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

It’s not a distraction and for what it’s worth, Tom Cable has denied it.

The Ultimate Opportunist

by Rated-R Superstar on Aug 18, 2009 4:10 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Anything a player gets asked about

that is not related to his performance or the teams performance on the feild is a distraction. The tone of the player quotes, was oh nothing new to have that type of event in Oakland. That’s sad considering the tradition of the raiders in the past.

I read about the no comment then the denial, but the police report stands, so what is going on with the coaches.

by Drullin'OverDaCards on Aug 18, 2009 4:19 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think the players are bothered by it at all and they’ve backed Cable all the way through this.

I guess the Raiders are getting back to “smash mouth football”. You have to Coach by example, and that’s what Cable did. As George Clinton would say " The mothership has landed"!!!!!!

your delusional

It was an unprofessional thing to do I don’t care what philosophy you teach. I’m sure Cable didn’t plan on breaking his assistants jaw when he was maping out the off season

I almost didn't comment on this but after all how can one resist

Well, my point with all this is, so what!! This is the Raiders, there have been all kinds of fights, players vs coaches, coaches vs coaches, waterboy vs parking lot attendant, you guys know what time it is. Coach won’t get suspended if they can’t confirm and at the end of the day no one will confirm the story. However, there is an issue, if the Commish calls Coach and asks him did he knock his assistant upside the head I am sure he would tell the truth. But Coach being a kid from East Oakland, if he calls deny everything…lol (just joking) But hopefully it won’t come to that.

I appreciate what the Commish is trying to do around the league making guys accountable, however, it is football and the Commish should not get involved with teams internal issues. I say this because NFL teams can discipline their staff and players as well and any incident not having a negative effect on the NFL as a whole should be handled internally. I do have a feeling the media will put more into this than the Raiders will, and I know Coach won’t do that again. I hope he gets a pass this time, and well, quite frankly everyone will be ready for him next time. I don’t think it will be that easy….lol Now the Raiders can get on the field and start breaking jaws….

This is just getting embarrassing

I wish Al Davis would just hire a damn GM already. Shit like this wouldn’t be happening so often and we wouldn’t be the damn laughing stock of the NFL

from bad to worse

Looks like this story is about to get 10x uglier… it’s being reported that since the Raiders have now fired Hanson, he has hired a lawyer and is fully cooperating with police.

I have a hunch Cable is going to be looking at felony assault charges really soon if this is true.

It will wind up as a

he said he said situation and Marshall will back up Cable. I see Cable getting off legally but maybe getting suspended for a game — if anything.

One punch to the mouth

is not felony assault. It’s at most, simple assault. Had he pummeled him and kept hitting him, then maybe felony assault.

by mikesd1981 on Aug 20, 2009 5:21 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

@midesd1981…

Well if you read the article you would see that apparently he either punched him (knocking him down) or threw him out of a chair to the ground, got on top of him and was strangling him saying “I’m going to kill you” and after other people pulled him off of Hanson, he got free and jumped on top of him and began choking him a second time.

If that is an accurate description of what happened, that is most certainly felony assault. At least. Could end up being even more than that.

by JohnPaul on Aug 21, 2009 3:39 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Had the latter happened

he’d be in jail. I highly doubt it got THAT far.
