Breaking News (Literally): Chaz Schilens Breaks Foot in Practice
NNNNOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! Jerry McDonald is reporting on his Twitter page that Raiders wide receiver Chaz Schilens broke the fifth metatarsal on his left foot and is out indefinitely. This same injury cost Donnie Avery 4-6 weeks last season, and is the best timetable we can hope for. Schilens' injury likely pushes Javon Walker's timeframe to come off the PUP list, and also pushes rookie Louis Murphy up the depth chart. Look for the Raiders to bring in another WR to camp to keep everyone fresh. Terrible, terrible news for the Raiders.

As reported by David White and Jerry Mac on Twitter……..
“Not good, Chaz Schilens on crutches, says there is broken bone in there. No timetable for return.” @bydavidwhite
“Schilens on crutches, left foot, 5th metatarsal … doesn’t know time frame. Was there best player in camp overall.” @jerrymcd

This is not good news. Sure, Walker is looking good in his rehab, DHB is coming along, and JLH is back as out slot guy, but Schilens was our best WR by far. Quite possably one of the greatest 7th rounders in memory for the Raiders. He still has a chance to be a star, but this hurts.
According to this link…..
http://www.podiatrytoday.com/article/5382
“In athletes, almost all fifth metatarsal fractures require surgical treatment. Given the high rates of delayed union, non-union or recurring fracture, early surgical intervention via ORIF or intramedullary fixation is strongly recommended.”
Also, from the reading that I have done, it appears that the best case scenario is 6-8 weeks. Shilens will likely have surgery, and wear an immobility boot for that length of time. Then, possible rehab depending on amount of time he is forced to spend away.
Well folks, brace yourselves. Bad things happen in threes. Yesterday we had the Cable controversy, today Shilens breaks a bone. What’s next? Sheesh!

This could be a blessing in disguise, you know. It most definitely opens up chances for Higgins, Murphy and Heyward-Bey.

The best-case scenario for Schilens is that he misses just four weeks and that would mean that he misses one game. A scenario in which I’d be happy with is if he misses six weeks and that’s three games. The latter is probably more accurate.

I’m trying to calm down and think about this rationally. We have depth — granted, it’s unproven — and between Javon Walker, Johnnie Lee Higgins, Louis Murphy and Darrius Heyward-Bey, we should be able to hold the fort down.
There is basically a four-player battle for two starting spots now. I’d like to think that Heyward-Bey, being the seventh overall pick, is going to earn his starting job. Along with him, it’ll probably be Walker. You can switch in and out Walker with Murphy and Heyward-Bey with Higgins. Sprinkling in Nick Miller along with the threats from Zach Miller and Darren McFadden, we should be fine.

read this
got panicked, but then I thought, “is this really that bad?” Answer, no. Schilens was going to have a great year, I could feel it. Now he’ll miss a few games (I’ll say he’ll miss 5 or 6), but we already have receivers in the wings that are actually very similar to Schilens.
Javon Walker- he’s slowed down quite a bit, but seems to have some really good hands. He can easily fill that possession receiver ability that Schilens had
Louis Murphy- Schilens ran a 4.3, Murphy ran a 4.3. Schilens caught just about every pass in practice, Murphy catches about every pass in practice. Schilens goes for tough catches, Murphy goes for tough catches. Schilens likes to make catches in traffic and doesn’t shy away from taking a hit, so does Murphy. Very identical, just Schilens has slightly better hands and one year of experience on Murphy.
Ideal depth chart:
1. DHB
2. Walker
these two should get the most playing time because you have a speed threat-possession threat combo which is always very effective in the NFL. Ward-Holmes, Moss-Welker, Wayne-Gonzales, and Smith-Muhammed; speed-hands tandems are always very effective. DHB’s speed on deep routes is enough to draw doubles and open up Walker on underneath passes, while Walker on third and shorts could keep some attention away from DHB on a deeper route.
Speed-hands combos match every situation that an offense will face and is always great to have.
from there:
3. Higgins if for the simple fact he’s a matchup nightmare in the slot
4. Murphy
5. Miller
So we still have three speed threats (Higgins, Miller, DHB), a possession receiver (Walker), and a base receiver (Murphy). While this does hamper our receiving corps a bit, it won’t ruin the passing game.
All this and we still have Miller, McFadden, Bush, and even Lorenzo Neal can catch.
Oakland has a ton of receiving options, all it comes down to is how consistent the line will be and how consistent Russell will be.

i dont think Schilens is THAT replaceable
but we’ll see. definitely hoping its Rated-R’s scenario of 4-6 weeks, or else our passing game could be in serious shit..
Don't confuse me with the facts, my mind is made up!!
i really like murphy
watching him play, he looks like he’ll be a great WR. He has almost everything you want in a receiver: route running, great hand in and out of traffic, and speed. Unless DHB gets his route running right, then i think i would rather have murphy starting.
by patriotguy2 on Aug 20, 2009 12:02 PM PDT up reply actions
if you take DHB out
who do you put in that has drawn the double coverage, like DHB. no one else on the roster, i dont think..

I Guess This Means That Two Millers Will Make The Team!
This is truly a setback, then again he may be back by Week 3. I don’t see this being a Four Week Thing.
Javon, Miller, DHB, Miller, McFadden, JLH and Bush should be able to hold it down until then.
I wonder where Arman Shields is? Or, in that case Sammy Parker?
We are definitely stoked to have Will Franklin at this point.
But when they start scheming us the way these guys did, and we weren't particularly ready for it, anything can happen."

Yeah, and Samie Parker is trash. I doubt he’ll cut it on any roster. Will Franklin is probably the best bet if we are going to carry six receivers including Schilens.

Reportedly......
Samie Parker is having an under the radar good camp. He may not play that much, but he is a great team guy and good for the youngsters if he makes the squad.
S&BP > Mile High Mules
He shouldn’t make the team unless they expand the rosters to 60 players all of a sudden and that won’t happen.

Well.....
I would expect he could. Its a long way yet, and baring injury, your probably right, but DHB has hammy issues, Javon is a MASSIVE question mark no matter how good hes looked in ‘rehab’, and Murphy is having hip trouble, though he should be back shortly.
My point? Never say never in the NFL, cause injuries happen, and because, as Warren has taught us, a player scorned from a division rival is a powerful weapon in those games.
Brett Tomko anyone?

+1 on javon walker
let’s see him, you know, actually play a couple good games first before we consider him even a tenth as good as he was in GB….

He will have to show me something before he makes the list

I very highly doubt that the Raiders will sign Marvin Harrison because of this.

what’s wrong with matt jones? if the raiders could get him they definitely should. he has speed and can catch in traffic.
by patriotguy2 on Aug 20, 2009 12:06 PM PDT up reply actions
I don’t want Matt Jones to start over Heyward-Bey, Murphy or Higgins. I don’t want him to start to start over Walker, either, because if Walker needs to start earning his money if he’s healthy. That takes us to the fifth spot. Nick Miller has been exciting to watch. Bringing Jones is in a monumental waste of time in my opinion.
Let’s stop acting like we lost some huge star that needs to be replaced, you know. Look within your team first. We have options. We have plenty of options. With Miller and McFadden in the passing game, our top receiver is arguably the third target on any given pass play.

We don't need to sign more recievers!
We where already at our limit with the number of recievers we have on the squad. The main problem is that JaMarcus and Schilens had good chemistry. During the Cowboys game he went often to Schilens and didn’t really spread the ball around as much. We have young recievers on this team and it’s time for them to step up and for JaMarcus to look to spread the ball around more. He needs to learn to trust the rest of his teammates.
This is nothing
Our receivers will need to step up. There has not been 1 Great Team I can recall who played with ALLtheir players Shit Happens suck it up and step up he might be back in week 3 and I am looking forward to that.

Look at the bright side
This is possibly the best possible time for a set back such as this. He has been at all OTA’s and a a lot of camp and will mis minimal amount or the regular season as we still have weeks of pre season

Schilens looked very good during practice and in the game on Thursday, but I agree that this is the best time for this to happen..
as long as everything heals well, we should be in good shape until he comes back. I am mor econcerened about our starting defense as they did not look great in the Cowboys game, hopefully they will get it figured out.

playoff teams find a way to win
as long as the vets resemble who they once were and rookies get up that learning curve, we’ll be fine by week 3. this highlights that we need the running game more than ever to lead. from the running game, our offence will take place. it’s a blow but at least he knows the offence and it’s still pre-season.
Related News - Avery Ahead of Schedule in Recovery
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that Donnie Avery, who broke his foot on August 7th, is ahead of schedule with his recovery.
Wide receiver Donnie Avery, who was expected to miss at least a month after breaking a bone in his left foot in the Aug. 7 scrimmage at Lindenwood University, is no longer wearing an orthopedic boot and is lobbying for an earlier return. Like, right now.
“Donnie wants to go; that’s Donnie,” Spagnuolo said. “Keenan (Burton) was the same way in the spring (with a hamstring injury). I would rather have guys like that, but we’re just trying to be smart.”
Even with this timeframe in mind, Schilens has to be considered out for Opening Night against San Diego. It would be nice to have him for the KC and Denver games though, to try and go 2-1 (3-0? Please?) in the division to start the year.

so then we don't need a good season?
honestly Al Davis has put together a very good offseason

I think we really Fucked up our MNF Game first with the loss of Chadz be we can’t do anything about that but, We got rid of Lorenzo Neal that pissed me off and we did it for Rashard Baker he better be super good and so should the other Neal this was the worst Raider week of all times.

amen
with neal and oneal we could have had the best running game in the league, but we picked up an average safety instead… fun
Rookie: "Why did you bench me?"
Nellie: "Your a rookie"
we don't need two great blocking fullbacks
The Raiders like to have a great blocking fullback and a runner/receiver fullback. I understand why we would keep two blocking backs with the uncertainty of O’Neal, but the coaches think he’s fine so I’ll trust their judgment.
Depth at safety was a top priority with Mitchell’s hamstrings continuing to act up and his struggles in coverage. it also seems Eugene is being a bit inconsistent and the same can be said for Huff but tenfold. Baker is already looking good in practice, especially in coverage. Which is something the Raiders need is better coverage ability at safety because tight ends tore us apart last year. if Eugene isn’t careful, Baker could very well pass him up.

I trust that they are doing what feels right for the team, and I hear what your saying abt the safeties they did struggle in the preseason game early on. but Lo Neal could have stayed on as the blocking fullback which he is great at and O’Neal as runner/receiver FB.
MEAT IS MURDER!! mmm tasty bloody murder.
problem there
O’Neal isn’t that great at either. The big thing though, he’s better at running/receiving than Neal and about the same level of blocker.
This way we have our great blocker in O’Neal and real weapon at FB in Russell/Reece

There was no logic behind
releasing Lorenzo Neal this early. He was easily the best player we had on the offensive side of the ball as far as experience and leadership. He’s also a proven pro bowler. Hopefully this isn’t a sign of more bad things to come.
