Raiders in Trouble! Suspects Identified!

Breaking News!  Raider Nation, someone needs to dial 911, cause several Raider players were absolutely assaulted today.   The victims?  Try the entire defensive line!  Now, looking back at the film from the Dallas game, and we should have seen this coming.

On the very first series of the game, the Cowboys absolutely caved in the right side of the D-line. If not for a batted ball by Ellis on 1st down, the whole line could have pressed charges as a unit.  It was that bad!  Then, you look at the second series, and the heart palpitations begin simultaneous with a shooting pain up your left arm. (always remember to have Bayer asprin at the ready when studying Raider run D, it could save your life!)  Of course Cable, whome Raider Nation trusts in all things linemen, disregarded the poor play as poor fundamentals, and the entire team, not just the D-line, playing with their hips too high.

As a desperately loyal member of the Raider Nation, I accepted Cable's excuses, and chose to chalk it up to the fact that it was "just the first game of the preseason."  Then today, I started reading the reports from the Tuesday Raider-49er two-a-day practices, and I say its officially time to panic.  Here are just a couple of the tweets from Jerry Mac and David White today a the practices.

David White: @bydavidwhite

"Teams on Field, Frank Gore gets through line without contact all 4 tries."

"Warren cursing after Gore flies right on through."

"Another Gore run, another unattended gap, No one sealed the edge on a sweep."

"Gore up the middle, Raiders assistant yells 'get off the block!'"

Jerry Mac: @jerrymcd

"49ers getting push on inside run series vs. Raiders"

"Kory Sheets runs untouched for 5 yards at the heart of Raiders 1st team D"

"Full team session - Gore big gain up middle"

"Morrison tells Howard, Watch his eyes T, it's a run... Gore does run, he gets yards"

First thing I wanna know is, who the hell is Kory Sheets, and how does he get 5 yards untouched?  I can understand some of the criticism the Raider's LBs have taken as a result of the poor run D the last several seasons, but if a no name RB is getting 5 yards untouched, then first and foremost that falls on the D-line; and I gotta say, at this point Im freakin out.

Look, the Raiders have been down right awful against the run, and thats no secret.  The team was 31st in the league last season giving up a whopping 145.9 yard per game, and absolutely nothing was done in an attempt to fix the problem in the offseason.  Ellis is a pass rush oriented DE just like Burgess was, Warren got destroyed against Dallas, and Scott was folded like a rag doll on numerous occasions against the boys.  The only positive against the run seems to be Kelly.  He is entering the second full season post knee surgery, typically when players get back to 100%, and has looked great when not false starting/encroaching.

I don't care how J-Money, DMC, DHB, Walker, or anybody else on the Raiders performs, cause if we cant stop the run its just not gonna matter folks!

Get it together Marshall, and start holding these guys accountable like you said you would!

Well the problem is like you said

We ranked 31st against the run last year and have done nothing this offseason to change or fix it. I say have Jay Richardson play on first and second down since Scott can’t stop the run, and get a better DT to play with Kelly. A trade for Shaun Rogers would be amazing but I don’t see Cleveland letting him go. Stopping the run is a must if we want to do good in our division.

Win, Lose, or Tie, Raiders til' I die.

Shaun Rogers?

Is he having problem in Cleveland? What would the Brown consider this? What would we have to give up to get him? Is he really on the trade market cause that would be great?

can't say I'm surprised

I’ll wait to actually panic when this happens in an actual regular season game. Which even then I expect it to. The linebackers don’t fill gaps and the DT’s can’t get any push whatsoever. If it wasn’t for the fact that Morrison and Howard are incredible in the passing game, I’d honestly say the entire front-seven needs redone. I didn’t expect anything form the run D this year, but next year I will.

The big thing, this offseason was clearly devoted to helping the pass offense get up to snuff. You’ll see next year’s offseason to focus on the run D. But this year, Davis is more concerned with a more consistent O-Line and better wide receiver play.

Guess what I’m saying is, don’t get peeved at Al Davis for his lack of attempt towards improvement of the run D. I think he has a long-term success plan in place and if the pass offense can get to about 21st or so, this plan will be on track. Don’t expect our pass ranking to be any more than that, because this is still a running team.

If the run D gets to 26th, I’ll be satisfied for the personnel we have.

My only problem with that is.......

the Raiders have been 28th or worse against the run for 6 straight years. If Al did not feel the need to address this issue in the past, what’s the impetus for him to do so next year?

DL doesn't necessarily need to be playmakers

but if they aren’t going to make the play themselves they at least need to keep the opposing OL away from our linebackers so that they can make a play. We do criticize our LB corp. for our problems with the run, but more often than not they have to deal with some enormous offensive guard who broke past the defensive line. Hopefully practices like the one yesterday will get the defensive line to listen to Marshall and Board and really buy in to what they are saying, otherwise it could be another long season.

The preseason game against Dallas is a tough barometer of where the run defense is at. Along with the Panthers and Giants, the Cowboys have one of the bigger offensive lines in the NFL – they are going to push just about everyone around. Plus, it was the first time for the DL to put into action the techniques Marshall and Board are trying to implement. It’s not early, but it’s also not too late to tighten up the problems before it matters for real.

Unfortunately, we can all panic as much as we want, but there aren’t going to be any personnel changes on the DL this year (barring injury). This is probably Sands’ last season, and Warren has 2 years left on his contract. Come next offseason, we’ll all be screaming for the Raiders to draft OL and DL once again.

Slade Norris destroyed the periodic table, because he only recognizes the element of surprise.

OL is fine to me

but we still don’t have a NT which even you have to admit we need. We basically have two good UT’s starting as is. I’d rather we get a good FA DT then draft a starter though.

As is I feel this is definitely going to be a very competitive team. Probably won’t lose any game by more than 14 if even that many because our D can make a lot of plays every now and then that can really change a game.

One thing I noticed, the defense is great under pressure. Overtime game versus Jets, one screw up and the game is over. How did the D respond to the pressure? They stopped the run and brought a ton of pressure on Favre. Bucs about to make a comeback, you give up a big play and you’re going home 4-12. No Asomugha in the secondary. How did the D respond? Got a sack on Garcia with the secondary doing a marvelous job without Nnamdi.

The D really makes plays when the game rides on their shoulders and I think we’ll see that trend continue this year, though we’d like for the game not to rely on them. It’s not that they’re not playmakers, it’s that they’re not consistent playmakers.

Barnes is on a one year deal, and Green is not a good enough starter at RT

Raiders need a RT, a good two gap NT, and a RE that can play both the pass and the run.

S&BP > Mile High Mules

by 0akFoSho on Aug 19, 2009 1:00 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

And...

Barnes is not at all thrilled about playing RT. One year deal + Not happy with position = Bad News. He has pleanty of gas left but with a one year deal you can’t really expect a ‘contract year’ performace out of him. Unlike Morrison who has something to prove this year.

maybe...

but id still like to get more better guys there. like a real NT, that also might be good at football. and maybe a long-term SLB, unless Ricky Brown emerges this year..

Don't confuse me with the facts, my mind is made up!!

What is all the panic about?

The practice today was no tackling, hell, I saw a highlight where Fargas was running free, he hasn’t done that in 3 years. How can you possibly make any long term determinations based on a 2nd series drive in the 1st exhibition game? I was listening to one expert who was all giddy about McFaddens run against the Cowboys 2nd unit, just plain silliness.
At this point in time the players are playing not to get hurt, and their attention span is not what it will be when the season starts. If LT or Sproul runs wild in the first game then you can begin to express your concerns but not until then. It is that time in training camp where players are starting to count off the number of days before camp is over, what is there for some of the players to get excited over? That is not the case for the rookies, they are fighting for a career, but the veterans, this is just a long tiring stretch that they have to get through, hopefully without getting injured.

The Raiders being one of the worst teams against the run for the last 6 seasons is no big deal right? Calling out the fact that were getting our asses kicked NOT JUST AGAINST THE BOYS but against the 49ers in practice is totally bogus right?

You want to know whats a turnoff this time of year? Anemic Raider fans unwilling to accept the truth while drinking, Kool-Aid!

I think our OTA and pre-season (so far) have been better than I expected. I still actually think we may get past .500 this year and last year that could have won us our division. Cold comfort, but still….

Its way more than the first TWO series in the Boys game against their 1st team O! The 49ers are kicking our ass. Did so again this morning, AND WHATS WORSE THEY KNOW IT!! They are openly talking shit that they are dominating the Raiders and that they have never been part to such one sided practices.

Get your head out man, cause if were getting schalacked by the 49ers were in trouble, BIG TIME!

If Laoren is right about no tackling in practice

then there shouldn’t be as much to worry about by White and McDonald’s reports. The Raiders are still working on gap assignments on the defensive line. Obviously there are still some kinks to work out. Let’s see what Gore does on Saturday before sounding the alarm too loud.

Our offense was pathetic against the 49ers in today’s practice.

The Raiders passing offense was embarrassed by the 49ers defense Wednesday, and they stood taller in admitting it afterward then they did on the field in taking it.

Raiders coach Tom Cable assumed responsibility, saying his command for JaMarcus Russell to "turn it loose" caused some poor decisions which resulted in 49ers interceptions _ three of which were recorded by San Francisco cornerback Nate Clement.

Guys, it is a practice

it means nothing, it doesn’t count, hold your horses a bit. Even the exhibition game this Saturday doesn’t mean anything. My god, people are making final judgments on what is done in a practice session. Save your agony for a league game when it does count and you can make a meaningful judgment. Does anybody even remember what happened a year ago in an exhibition game? Did it matter, did it tell you anything? After Sept. 4th you can write the doom and gloom comments, then it might mean something, now it is just wasted blabber.

by Laoren on Aug 19, 2009 1:32 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

No one is making final judgements....

Just calling it like I see it. Stopping the run has been “the major point of emphasis” in camp for the defense. Up to this point, I’d say they get a failing grade. What I find most troubling is people almost willingness to accept a crappy run D year after year. Its no wonder the problem never gets fixed.

S&BP > Mile High Mules

by 0akFoSho on Aug 19, 2009 3:23 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Up to this point represents only one exhibition game

and a controlled scrimmage where take downs are not allowed. In my view the Raiders tried to address the run defense in the off season, they loaded up on DE’s and LB’s in the draft, and during practice they are matching and fitting different guys into different positions.
With a new defensive coordinator and different schemes it might take some time to jell, time will tell.
I watched the exhibition game a couple of times on tape and in two of the Dallas long runs on the 2nd drive, Trevor Scott bit twice to the inside and got circled. In another long run Ricky Brown filled the hole perfectly, everything was set up perfectly except he got juked and a long run ensued. It is a work in progress, let’s hope that the Raiders offense shows up this year and keeps the defense off the field a little more than in the past 5 years.

Ann Killion of Comcast SportsNet Bay Area writes about the joint practice being held by the Raiders and the 49ers.

"I predict there will be a few fights," said cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha.

Quarterback JaMarcus Russell agrees.

"It’s going to be hot, guys are going to be bothered," he said. "You just try not to let it get out of hand."

The Bay Area’s Hatfields and McCoys will practice together on Tuesday and Wednesday, in preparation for their weekend exhibition game. It’s a local Football-palooza, with everyone jamming on the same stage.

Wrong

Ann buzz-Killion gets it wrong, again, as usual. Here is the story in her former paper.

The Raiders and 49ers made it through two spirited practices as if they were the best of buds. This was a significant contrast from a year ago when repeated skirmishes broke out between the Bay Area teams.

Before taking the practice field Tuesday, coach Mike Singletary made it clear that fighting would not be tolerated.

“We didn’t come here to fight. We’ve got too much work to do,” he said. “We’re not good enough for that.”

The rivalry nonsense is mainly between the fans of the two teams. The Raiders and Niners only play each other for real every four years.

I'll admit

that the second offensivie drive by the Cowboys against our first team D was disturbing but don’t get all freaked out by Twitter feeds from people stuck below the 25 yard line writting about a “practice”.
As regards to our passing game this morning (Wed), I suspect our receivers are all a little freaked by Chaz being out and trying to figure a new dynamic. I expect to see a lot more from both Z and N Miller. Not to mention Cable was pushing JRuss to execute faster. I think JRuss just over compensated. Remember it’s called practice.

by dram5780 on Aug 19, 2009 4:18 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

hmm..

If i were a Raider fan i wouldn’t trip so much about a preseason game vs the 49ers. Like i said, “preseason”. Yes, your friends that go for the Niners or other teams will say a couple jokes but that’s when you can turn to them during the second half of the regular season and laugh at them “if your team has a better record than theirs” =). I’m a Niner fan from Niners Nation and I have nothing against the Raiders. Heck I want you guys to win your division. I dislike Matt Cassle, Mc Daniels, and i could care less about San Diego lol. I say kick some butt bay area. But for those who still feel the Raiders have to win their preseason game against the Niners more than anything else just remember that in 2006 the Raiders won 4 out of 5 preseason games and went to having a record of 2-14 with one of those games being a loss to the 49ers and 3 other games scoring 0 pionts, while the Colts had only won 1 out of 4 preseason games that year and went to win the Super Bowl.

well..

we have a pretty good amount of guys that have good hands. Morgan, Bruce, Gore, Crabtree had great hands in Texas Tech so i’m sure he can’t be that bad lol, plus Coffee has a pretty nice catching ability but with Sheets it will make us even more deadly lol . . My friend who is a Broncos fan “ha” had picked up Schilens in our fantasy group after how well he played against the Cowboys. That’s some bullshizzle that happened to him but luckily its nothing major he’ll be back by the 2nd game of the season maybe the 1st if he has a quick recovery.

Yeah and it sucks about Schilens. Don’t think he’ll be back before game 3. On the positive side, maybe now Nick Miller (my new favorite Raider) will make the roster for us and if Murphy stays healthy it will give him a chance to prove himself early in the season.

Its all about the lines

Offensive and Defensive.

Sure we have alot of promise at QB, WR, RB, CB, etc, but if you don’t have the lines it does not matter. Why do you think the Patriots always did so well without the best at those positions (except Brady of course). It was the lines. Why does Payton Manning always look so good. His front line. I hope we get some run defence this year, or all these dreams of the division lead or an 8-8 season might be a pipe dream.

the raiders have a great set of LB's.

the DL is a big problem when it comes to the run. I think they should go get brian young, who is a free agent. he is strong, and better than the DT next to kelly.

Other than that, i think the raiders should practice the 3-4. the 4-3 is mostly a pass rushing formation.
the 3-4 is more run stopping because of the superior agility and vision of LB compared to the DL(meaning that the LB are more quick to make a decision of where to go, and they have more speed to get there). not to mention that in a 3-4, you could always send a LB on either side(or both, or all 4) to rush the passer with your DL. it also gives more pass coverage than a 4-3.

I think it could work: warren, kelly, ellis howard, brown, morrison, and alston(or anybody else, like a FA).

by patriotguy2 on Aug 20, 2009 12:30 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

i question that

im pretty sure your suppose to be able to stuff the run better out of a 4-3..the only thing a 3-4 helps you do is disguise the blitz better to get a better pass rush..that being said the problem is we dont have good personel for either formation..we dont have anyone to play the nose in the 3-4 and the 4-3 we lack great pass rushers and a solid run stopping dt..linebacker wise we have 4-3 linebackers..we need to upgrade the d-line if we want the defense to get better

by pablopaul25 on Aug 20, 2009 2:29 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

i agree, but...

the 4-3 is more for pass rushing. that’s why 4-3 DE’s would rather be a Linebacker in a 3-4. 4-3 DE’s are usually faster than 3-4 DE’s, and most of them specialize in the pass rush(ie. peppers, mario williams, jared allen, derrick burgess of oakland, and dwight freeney and robert mathis).

maybe the raiders DL won’t be as successful in a 3-4 as they are in the 4-3; but the LB’s in my opinion will contribute a lot more in both passing and rushing defense(i also like the morrison and brown duo for the middle).

by patriotguy2 on Aug 20, 2009 2:56 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

yea nah i dont think so

i mean you think morrison has a hard time getting off blocks in the 4-3..it would be disaterous in the 3-4…the linebackers we have dont suit the 3-4 howard isnt near big enough to play olb in the 3-4 our run defense would be even worse if that is possible..i dont know..we need trevor scott to be the next great pass rusher and we need a dt to step up..our best option right now is to heavily blitz and try to force turnovers and big plays..i dont understand our coaching strategy we have some fast good dbs..but we dont heavily blitz to force qbs to make bad throws toward them
