Raiders cut Neal!!!

Hold on let me vent ( WHAT F !!!!!!!!!! THIS IS A TERRIBLE MOVE AL DAVIS NEEDS TO LEAVE AND NEVER COME BACK AND CABLE NEEDS TO STOP SUCKING UP TO HIM!!!!) ok, why did we do this? Cable said cause there was no room for him. BS. Cut Lawton instead, Neal is still one of the best full backs in the league. And why sign a safety if we need a run stuffer inside way more?

We don't need the

venting of hatred toward Davis. It opens too much of a debate that just doesn’t need to be.

we cut him

because Oren O’Neal impressed the coaching staff with his recovery from major knee surgery.

Maybe maybe not.
But O’Neal, a bruiser who is recovering from major knee surgery in 2008, may not be back to 100 percent. He rested on a bench beyond the Raiders’ weightlifting area for quite some time after the morning practice, then limped slowly into the locker room.

I thought Neal looked

awfully ordinary in the Dallas game. Looked a tad slow to me, and Russell looks a lot better as a runner and pass catcher. If a young O’Neal is in fact back then it was redundant to keep Neal.

by Laoren on Aug 19, 2009 7:52 PM PDT reply actions

C'mon Marcel Reece!

Lorenzo Neal was always an insurance policy for Oren O’Neal. If O’Neal is good to go, he’s the primary blocking FB. The Raiders will use their other FB spot for a West Coast-style fullback who can catch the ball out of the backfield and create mismatches with linebackers. Marcel Reece is that type of player.

David White seems to think we’ll keep 3 fullbacks on the 53-man roster, but the Raiders kept only 2 all last season, so the other fullback is likely to either be Reece or G. Russell. My vote is for Reece, who has shown great versatility blocking, catching the ball, running with the ball, and playing special teams.

As Black_Lion said in another thread, teams are more likely to cut veterans who aren’t going to make the roster to give them an opportunity to catch on with another team. I’m sure Coach Cable discussed the issue with Lorenzo and told him that Oren O’Neal’s healthy knee meant he was unlikely to make the final roster. I hope Lorenzo finds another place, or at least stays in shape to be ready to assist a team in need this season. Best of luck to you Lorenzo.

Slade Norris destroyed the periodic table, because he only recognizes the element of surprise.

Lorenzo Neal

He’s a great character guy and is probably my favorite fullback in the league other than O’neal and Owen Schmitt (representing West Virginia!) and I certainly wish him the best.

However, I more than understand this move. With mitchell’s hamstring problems not going away anytime soon and Huff, I hear, has some injury problems and isn’t really a good player in the first place. Baker reassures our depth at safety, an area we’re thin at in depth and weak at talent wise. Baker had a good year last year in Oakland and was someone I wanted resigned. I doubt he’ll start unless there’s an injury, but he brings good depth to the position.

But why cut Neal? Because fullback is overflowing with talent. O’Neal is 100% again, Russell has been a great runner and pass catcher, Lawton is a great receiving fullback, and Reece can do a little bit of it all. There’s younger, more athletic talent than what Neal brought. perhaps he wasn’t a good zone blocking fullback after all, or maybe he just simply wasn’t as multi-talented as the rest of the fullbacks.

Neal is a good blocker, but he’s not really that good at anything else. The Raiders love players that can do a little bit of everything and players that can be effective in every situation. Neal is a below average pass catcher, and is not much of a runner anymore.

Overall I say, good move Oakland.

I get it

but why sign Baker, even if he did have a good couple of games last year, I think a move to get a DT would be a main concern after hearing about the practice with the 49ers and how they were running rampant against our D. IF they would have kept Neal than that would have at least insure we had a blocking fullback if O’Neal went down again and a leader on that side of the ball that has been on winning teams. Just hate to see him go

we have much more depth at DT than we do safety. With mitchell’s hamstrings problems not going away, we’re pretty much only three deep at safety.

A great run-stuffing DT would be great

But based on who’s available I think we are gonna have to go with who is here right now. Can you name any unsigned DT’s that you would want to pick up.

The team felt Baker was the best safety on the market. With Mitchell possibly out for three weeks or whatever, we needed another safety.

there

are no worthwhile DTs on the market.

well if not a DT but someone needed in the front 7 a safety i dont think was needed we are solid in the DB department.

are we really that solid at safety?

hiram eugene, tyvon branch, mike huff, mike mitchell (hurt)….

i think we could’ve used another one, especially one that turned out to be decent at safety last year…

by naq92 on Aug 20, 2009 7:54 PM PDT up reply actions

ok

but those 4 are more likely to be starters/backups in the regular season, what about boyd or brown. im talking abt the preseason. we need more from the front 7 added someone would help.

MEAT IS MURDER!! mmm tasty bloody murder.

by nationofblack on Aug 20, 2009 8:17 PM PDT up reply actions

if boyd or brown make the team

thats a pretty clear indicator that we could use another S, IMO.

the fact that he led our team in picks last year, is a plus.

plus he knows a lot of the system and the communication

just needs to learn a couple little thins here and there but nothing major. plus he knows everyone on the team and how they play, communicate, so on and so forth.

Disapointed to see Neal cut

I hope this means an opportunity for Rankin, Russell or Reece

by raiders1980 on Aug 20, 2009 7:49 AM PDT reply actions

More pain to come

Yeah it sucks and remember we still have to cut about 1/3 of the players (27) currently on our roster to make our 53. Boy I sure am being a downer today.

by dram5780 on Aug 20, 2009 11:18 AM PDT reply actions

Yet John Bowie and Sam Williams remain on the roster

The Raiders need football players, and they cut one of the better ones who actually wanted to be here. I suppose Jeff Garcia is next.

We just signed Ricky Manning. Don’t see how Bowie beats out Johnson or Routt (despite his lousy Cowboys game) Darrick Brown is probably gone too and Justin Miller will have to get lucky to stay. Don’t see how we can carry more than four at CB.

We’ve got way to many LB right now. Not even sure how we can justify keeping Nixon and Ekijiuba. If Brown starts with Alston as backup/pass rusher then Ekijuba could back up Morrison maybe. But with Mitchell and Norris onboard, someone’s got to go and I think it’s gonna be Williams, Nixon and possibly Ekijuba. I’m hoping Nixon makes the practice squad.

by dram5780 on Aug 20, 2009 7:11 PM PDT up reply actions

they're still hoping Bowie will work out

Davis doesn’t want to admit defeat on the guy he traded Moss for.

he has been hurt

the last couple of season so i think they’ll take a hard look at him and i dont think he played all that bad in the preseason games v. Dallas

Forgot about that.

And Davis is nothing if not stubborn.

by dram5780 on Aug 21, 2009 3:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Williams wont go Al Davis is high on him and like i said he is a core special teams player, on kickoff coverage and punt coverage, Bowie does have a long road ahead of him but he is a special teams player none the less

yes

he hasnt produced much he was a starter and got beat out last year by ricky brown and is stuck on special teams

Sam Williams is behind at least four or five linebackers. That’s not a good sign when you’ve been here for seven years.

don't knock good special teams

Williams isn’t an Ekejiuba by any stretch of the imagination, but he’s still a key part of our special teams unit.

I'm not

criticizing him and I know he aint Ekejiuba, but he is as you say a key part of that special teams unit, and thats why they wont in my opinion let him go he has value in that team, Al wont let him go, he is loyal to a lot of players on that team.
