News and Tidbits on Saturday's Game

As most of you know, the second preseason game of the schedule is this Saturday evening at 5:15 p.m. against the 49ers in San Francisco. While the Randy Hanson situation has dominated the news, Tom Cable answered questions about this Saturday's game today. David White has information on who will play and for the most part, how long they will be playing.

Star-divide

Quarterbacks:

** Russell is one starter who won't play an entire half. Backup Jeff Garcia will take over sometime in the second quarter.

Bruce Gradkowski gets the third quarter and Charlie Frye will close up shop.

Running backs:

** Justin Fargas will not start Saturday's game, but not because Cable doesn't like the guy.

He wants to start a new back this week, and then a third back the week after that. He'll say whether Darren McFadden or Michael Bush gets the nod after Friday's walk-through.

The starters will play the entire first half. Expect the starting running back to get more carries than Fargas' single run.

Wide receivers:

Raiders coach Tom Cable stepped away from the Randy Hanson questions long enough to name his two starting wide receivers for Saturday's exhibition game against the 49ers.

Darrius Heyward-Bey and Louis Murphy.

Sure, that has a lot to do with Chaz Schilens out and Javon Walker not yet back. But, if they find a way to shine with the Raiders sure to pass heavily, they just might have an opening-day chance.

There really isn't much news on the defensive players other than that cornerbacks Nnamdi Asomugha, Chris Johnson and Stanford Routt all had the day off today.

For now, it looks as though Gradkowski is leading Frye in the race to become the last quarterback on the team.

I hope Nick Miller gets more playing time at wide receiver. He seems like a really fun little guy to watch run around out there.

The thing I'm most looking forward to watching, though, is the run defense. It's obviously our biggest weakness and Frank Gore is a pretty good running back.

Good

Gave me a little more confidence for sat’s game

Amazing, Jamarcus Russell hands off to McFadden who pitches it back to Russell who finds Darrius Heyward Bey in the Middle of the Field wide open 30, 20,10,5 Touchdown Raiders! Amazing. This telecast is Brought to you by Cable.

3rd string QB

Gradkowski proved at the end of last season with the Browns that he should not even be in this league. The Browns set a record for most consecutive quarters without scoring an offensive touchdown. Bruce had a lot to do with that. Charlie Frye should most definently be the third string behind Garcia.

What have you done for me lately?

Gradowski seems to be having a much better pre-season than Frye.

hope they play better against them than they did during practice i.e. stopping the run, red zone offense.

One bad practice.

It seems we held our own in the other three.

By some accounts the Wed AM practice was the worst this season, but I think we showed a lot of poise to bouce back after that and stick to business. I am very curious about the run D though. Worries me a lot. I think they will determine wheather or not we break .500 this season.

But when they start scheming us the way these guys did, and we weren't particularly ready for it, anything can happen."

I'm hesitant to say that

until he’s in an actual game against starters and not second and third string.

oh, he's definitely that type of guy.

You’d see it a lot more if a team like the Patriots were using him out of the slot, with dude named Randy demanding deep double coverages and that guy Belichick making you respect all that underneath stuff they do to TE’s, FB’s and RB’s out of the backfield.

He’s smallish (5/9") not quite as small as Welker. very quick and able to find open space in the zones, and strong for a small guy. Sad, with the Raider’s situation, that fumble Saturday, and their inability to get the most out of the WR situation with the inconsistency at qb, he may not make the final cut. I hope Denver, SD, or KC don’t get him!

i mean, the dude wasnt drafted for a reason….

So did Welker

I’m not saying Nick Miller is the next Wes Welker, but Welker went undrafted out of the 2004 NFL Draft as well.

Slade Norris destroyed the periodic table, because he only recognizes the element of surprise.

ESPN’s draft coverage missed the moment when Al Davis and Tom Cable each took turns using Mel Kiper’s mock draft as toilet paper. - Chris Shellcroft

if ur not comparing nick miller to wes welker

are you comparing the raiders to the 07 patriots? either way, i dont see nick miller being the next anybody….atleast not this year. i think long-term he has the potential to be a wes welker type WR, but thats a long shot. and even for welker, he didnt start lighting it up during his rookie season…

eh

i have to see more of him.

Kind of like Walters will, and Randy did...

if he went on to be a Patriot, he might be the next great Patriot like Welker! I’m expecting Walters to come out smelling like a rose on this one. Still think the Pats are one of the teams to beat, but the clock is definitely ticking, and it’s kinda weird to see them do it with old guys and vets as opposed to the way that worked for so many years. No one gets more out of guys than Belichick does. Only hope Cable can become a guy like him, even close to that level.

Really bad news C-Chill broke his foot in practice..

Unfortunately Chaz "C-Chill Schilens won’t be avaialbe for at least 6 to 8 weeks, meaning L. Murphy and the others will have to step up. It’s a real blow to our receiver corps because J-Russ has chemistry with C-Chill. Now its an opportunity for the others to step up.

Raiders have signed safety Rashad Baker and waived fullback Lorenzo Neal. I knew it could happen read my post on the Silver and Black Pride’s Sunday Community Poll: The Running Back Logjam blog dated Aug 16th. The Raiders cut Neal to add some strength in the defensive backfield. Our running game has shown up and I am ok with this move. As you all know we need better tackling at Safety, not just hitting, but tackling and hopefully Baker can provide help in that area. There are going to be other casualties as well very soon, and I must say I am happy to see moves are being made to make the team better. There will be plenty of D Tackles available soon, some teams are stacked, and many times a released player would make another team if he wasn’t on a team stacked at his position. So, the saga continues….Lets whip on these 49ers Saturday, we need all the preseason wins we can get to build momentum.

And let’s see who will shine now that C-Chill is out for a while.

Raiders need better tackling everywhere!

I am just hoping that someone dumps a run stuffing DT, but I am not counting on that. I think any pick ups/free agents at this point will only help in solidifying depth.

Wherever I go, that's where I am.

Frank Gore

Hes a beast and is going to be hard to stop so i hope they do well and it also gives us a preview of what to look foward to for the season..good/or bad hopefully good..

I just noticed

That the Raiders website has been updated in the transactions part. It says Lorenzo Neal was placed on injured reserve. So apparently there’s more to the situation than we know about. I thought there was something strange about us releasing him this soon but I guess he just got hurt with an undisclosed injury.

Torn Hamstring

Neal probably tore his hamstring on Tuesday.

An annoying hamstring injury had been bothering Neal through training camp and on Tuesday he “over-extended” it in practice. Neal went to a doctor in San Francisco on Thursday who thinks it’s a slight tear. He is supposed to have an MRI today.

Here’s more.

Sorry to hear that...

for the Raiders and even more for Neal. I am sure this is frustrating for him and likely is the end of his stellar workhorse career.

Wherever I go, that's where I am.

looking for more of russel

for his mobility in the pocket, and i’ll be watching any chemistry he would have with his receivers.

Yeah it looks like Neal is on Injured Reserved

It’s unfortunate that he got injured, however, it basically seals his fate with the team.

The Raider Beat staff have their own preview for this Saturday’s game against the 49ers.

An excerpt:

Things to watch for: Justin Fargas received the starting nod in Oakland’s first exhibition game. Now it’s Darren McFadden’s turn to show what he can do as the featured back. It’s all part of Cable’s grand plan to get extensive looks at all three of his starting-caliber backs so that he can make an informed decision about which is the best option as the starter for the regular-season opener. McFadden likely will get a handful of carries early on, before Michael Bush makes an appearance. Bush will start next Saturday.

not a very effective plan

fargas may play differently against the 49ers than the cowboys. likewise to mcfadden. just saying that they’re completely different types of defenses, but it’s probably better than any other option.

Tid-Bit

I didn’t want to start another thread for this, but, has anybody else noticed how bad the Raiders announcers are?

Plunkett spent all last week calling Gradkowski “Gradowski”
Last night he said “Shillman broke his ankle and will be out 8 weeks”! That’s not the report I heard, or the name of the player. Flores several times referred to the 9ers QB as “Date Navis”! He also made mention several times to our “Defensive Defenders”! Greg Papa is invariably wrong on every call. Calls guys out of bounds when they’re not, calls passes incomplete when they’re not, calls penalties the wrong way every time, gives the wrong players name almost every time, and I love ol’ George Atkinson, but somebody please take the microphone away from him!

Are the announcers sitting in “obstructed view” seats?

Are they aware that the players DO have names and numbers on their jerseys?

Did Jim Plunkett really go to college? Does he speak or read English?

I used to think the Washington Capitals had the world’s worst announcers with Craig Laughlin and Joe Beninatti, but the crew the Raiders have in the booth are even worse.

Guess I’ll just turn the sound off.

I was born twins, but the other one died laughing at me

George sounds like he's drunk with a broken jaw every time!

Plunk does sound uneducated, and his pronunciation never helps, but he occasionally sees something only an SB qb will see; occasionally…

Greg Papa is worse than the little bald Jewish guy that does games every now and then where Madden used to be a staple. Dude makes me want to punch him in the face after having to listen to him for a whole game. Papa Greg is in no way, shape, or form, better at all…

Gannon’s the only guy who wore a Raider uniform any good at all in the broadcasting booth; Nnamdi will be awesome as well, but there’ s a big drop off after that. Even John Madden was hated by most before he left. He’ll always have those “turducken” moments, but I’ll miss Madden big time! Hell, those moments might be the ones I’ll miss most!
