The Starting MLB in 2009, Ricky Brown?!?

According to Jerry Mcdonald's blog, Tom Cable has begun considering permanently moving Ricky Brown to the Middle Linebacker spot to move Kirk Morrison outside. link

Star-divide

Inside of the article, Tom Cable admits to thinking about the idea of having Ricky Brown start in the middle and althogh training camp is young, Ricky Brown has been getting a significant amount of reps in the middle.  He's been taking some reps there since the OTA's in may.

I know even before Ricky Brown started getting reps at MLB there were many on this blog that believed that K.Morrison was much better suited playing OLB to help utilize his speed and coverage skills better.

This still begs the question, will the 2009 Raiders play better w/ Ricky Brown in the middle and Kirk morrison on the outside?  How will this affect our run defense?  Could this move translate into more wins?  lemme know, what do all you guys think.

Ricky Brown should only be starting if Kirk Morrison is starting on the outside as well. If not, it’s just not worth having Kirk Morrison off the field.

Starting Brown with Jon Alston and Thomas Howard ensures that we would have the worst starting linebackers in the NFL.

i agree

perhaps i didn’t word it right but i would never put in Ricky Brown INSTEAD of Kirk Morrison. but maybe Morrison on the outside will contribute more to the team?

That’s the only way I would do it. I’d go out and sign Derrick Brooks, but working with what we have, I don’t mind Brown in the middle with Morrison on the outside. Either way, with what we have, one person between Brown and Alston has to start.

There’s no question Morrison would be starting, it’s just whether he’ll be inside or outside. Don’t even think that they might bench him for Alston because Morrison is probably the best tackler on the team.

best tackler on the team

is that saying much?

Morrison

I don’t think we’d take Morrison off the field completely. That would just be defence suicide!! Both are good players who NEED to be out there. But stranger things have happened.

Morrison will never

be off the (baring injury) Brown only starts at Mike if Kirk starts at Sam

Nowhere does it say that Brown would play INSTEAD of Morrison

it just says Morrison would play outside of Brown.
I personally think the more versatile and the more differant looks we can throw on Defence the better.
I dont see why you have to say he’s a Middle and Hes a Outside and that’s it if they can move around then move them around and give the opposition QB’s another thing to have to think about it especially with Kirk as he is a player that QB’s have to account for on every play.

Basically I doubt that either player will player either position exclusively.

Neither Brown playing instead of Morrison nor Morrison playing on the outside has been set in stone. Right now, I think they’re just playing around with where they can possibly utilize everyone’s talents to the fullest extent.

thx for totally getting my point across

Morrison’s on the outside, Rickey Brown in the middle. I guess i should’ve been more careful with my wording with such a complex scenario ; )

Don't confuse me with the facts, my mind is made up!!

by naq92 on Aug 4, 2009 5:54 PM PDT up reply actions

The simple truth is that Morrison is not a great MLB

He is very fast, closes to the ball well but does not disrupt anything from that position.
Can Brown be better, no idea but I think he will probably clog the middle up better than Morrison and apparently Cable thinks the same. Brown is not nearly as good in pass coverage and ill suited to play outside, Morrison is excellent there and should be outside.
I think this is one of the better ideas Cable has come up with. A team needs a MLB to clog up the middle, disrupt plays and tackle with some ferocity. Morrison does none of those things.

by Laoren on Aug 4, 2009 5:49 PM PDT reply actions

whoever is faster should move to the outside

speed is always key to OLB for pursuing and pass rushing.

by patriotguy2 on Aug 4, 2009 5:53 PM PDT reply actions

also what happened to greg ellis?

isn’t ellis supposed to start on OLB opposite of thomas howard?

by patriotguy2 on Aug 4, 2009 5:54 PM PDT reply actions

that's only in the 3-4

but before that, he played DE in a 4-3 system, which i’ve heard he feels more comfortable playing.

Don't confuse me with the facts, my mind is made up!!

by naq92 on Aug 4, 2009 5:56 PM PDT up reply actions

ah

so is DE his role this year? I think they should switch to 3-4 every now and then to get the most out of all their LB talent. If it doesn’t work then I would rather have kirk because if you have 4 guys pass rushing then you need a good pass covering LB in the middle with good awareness of the field around him.
I have to admit though, i don’t know much about ricky brown though, and reading Laoren’s post, I think kirk will do well on the outside as well, if brown is as good as laoren says he says, then i think brown should play middle and kirk on the outside.

by patriotguy2 on Aug 4, 2009 6:15 PM PDT up reply actions

well, i think brown has earned the trust of tom cable

sounds like he’s real high on him. i’m pretty sure morrison must be faster than Brown, which is why i think moving morrison to the outside might not be such a bad idea.

That would suck

But, Highly improbably cuz they got tooo much respect for each other

could be a sleeper LB as well it will be interesting to see

I don’t really like Jon Alston starting. Ricky Brown playing in the middle with Kirk Morrison and Thomas Howard on the outside is the way to go in my opinion. I’ll include a poll in tomorrow’s post.

based on last year, i don't want alston starting either

but i’ve heard he’s bulked up a little and looks quicker. maybe he can platoon with ricky brown so they both stay fresh??

I don’t know the rotation will or would work, but I assume that Alston and Sam Williams would be the first two linebackers off the bench.

Although I haven't checked with Rated-R......

Kirk may work too hard and be too team orientated for him, Does does anyone know if Crabtree can play any Linebacker? ;)

Having Morrison and Howard on the outside is a great idea.

They can both cover and blitz well. The qb would never know who to look for blitzing and who is dropping in coverage. If Brown can play a competent mlb then I say go for it. Either way, if the run D is going to improve the DT’s need to step it up, so whomever plays at mlb can make some plays on some rb’s!

No, it's not...

but I am more hopefull of this as a possibility now. I like you think this would give us the best possible starting LB’s with our current players. That is, if Brown can handle the middle at all. I am nervous about the D’s ability to stop the run. You?

if he came from BC, then brown should be a great LB.

BC recently started developing great LB’s, so i’m confident in brown, and he should be good against the run because bc’s defense i think is to defend against the run first and pass second.

If Worst Comes To Worse

I wouldn’t mind Kirk playing MLB again this year. I mean come on, he is not that bad.

where he is best suited for our D, not about how bad he played because he didn’t.
Although if our D-line plays better it will make who ever plays MLB look better.
