Raiders Trade DE Derrick Burgess to Patriots
NFL.com is reporting that the Raiders have traded DE Derrick Burgess to the New England Patriots for as of yet undisclosed draft consideration.
The two teams had been discussing a deal for the disgruntled Burgess for most of the offseason. Previous reports of the trade talks indicated that the Raiders were asking for 3rd and 4th round draft picks from the Patriots.
Burgess' departure brings a sigh of relief for other defensive ends on the Raiders roster such as Jay Richardson and rookie Matt Shaughnessy, who will both likely make the 53-man roster now that Burgess is gone.

Ugh.
Why do we always trade to the bane of my existance?

I hope we received a third-round or a fourth-round pick from the Patriots in the 2010 draft or the 2011 draft.

Man
The Pats again? First Moss and now Burgess. We create our own worst enemy time and time again!! No more trades in division or with the frickin Pats should be allowed!! But maybe someone up there knew what they were doing getting Ellis. I hope he rocks this year.

you guys would be happy with ellis
even with his age, he produces a VERY good amount of sacks. i think the raiders would be even better without burgess as a distraction.

Yeah, we’re receiving a third-round pick and fifth-round pick in the 2011 draft according to this blurb also.
The Pats swoop in to pluck another disgruntled Raider, but this one looks like a fair deal for both teams. The Eagles were reportedly in the mix as well, offering a third-round pick. The talented but injury-prone veteran fills the Pats’ biggest defensive need as a pass rushing presence at weak outside linebacker.

damn, I was hoping for picks next year
oh well, at least we got a third and a fifth, instead of just a third like I originally thought would happen.

A 3rd and 5th in '11 can turn into a better pick in '10 though.
I am just happy to get two picks- I would have settled for the 3rd alone.

Same Here
I thought we’d only get a 2010 3rd round pick as well. Giving the Raiders draft picks is sometimes a scary proposition, but the Raiders have done better in recent history with later round picks, so getting a 5th rounder for 2011 is OK. More than likely the Raiders will use it to trade up.

this is a damn good trade. we got a mid round and a late round pick for a guy that wasn’t going to play this year anyways. he probably would’ve been cut if he wasn’t dealt to NE.

Paul Wexler has his take on the trade, but it’s mostly the same things we’ve talked about.
Reports still flying around as to what the Raiders received. No one from the Raiders has confirmed anything as of this posting.
Burgess signed as an unrestricted free agent in 2005, made the Pro Bowl in his first two seasons, registering 16 sacks in 2005 and 11 sacks in 2006. Burgess’ production dropped the past two seasons, and he had only 3 1/2 sacks last season.

Why always the Pats?
I don’t Care that he was traded, I wanted him gone because I’m starting to believe in Cable’s “no distractions” philosophy.
However, why must we always trade to the Pats? It makes me both furious and nervous. Moss, Burgess, Walter, Jordan, I believe Sulak had a workout there, and I’m sure I’m forgetting someone.
Just HIT somebody.

Burgess to Belichick
Well, there goes another veteran to Bill Belichick, he understands the value of vets. But Burgess needed to go he didn’t want to be here, see ya!!! We will do fine without him and he wasn’t producing at the same level anyway.
Yeah, the Pats seem to have a roster full of Raiders, but who cares, at the end of the day you have to beat who is in front of you. At least it isn’t Denver, Kansas City, or San Diego with our players.

I personally like the trade. This goes along with the “purge” since Cable has been in charge. We need players who have pride to wear the silver and black. Not to mention we got two draft picks. In my opinion, good trade for the Raiders. Better than being a disgruntled roster spot, right?
I just remember players like Jerry Porter (even though Art Shell was a huge fail) wasting a roster spot. The future is bright!

Love The Trade
I don’t think this helps the Pats enough to warrant a third round pick. By the looks of Adalius Thomas (who was, and is a better player than Burgess), BB hasn’t really done wonders with overrated veteran LB’s. And this is a guy who has never really played LB in a 3-4.
A third rounder (and a fifth too), is a great haul for a guy who really wouldn’t of made much of an impact on the team anyway. I just wish now that we wouldn’t have cut Sulak.

2011.? Seriously.? The raiders need help now.! The pats would have given more for burgess… They need him and seem to like to take raiders players… 3rd and 5th.? Plz..plus the Pats will stay on top so it would be late 3rd and 5th round picks. That trade was way to easy for the pats. They should have asked for more.
Screw the Patriots.!!!

I just saw this in the Boston Globe
and I hope this is true
The Patriots surrendered 2010 third-round and fourth-round picks, with a condition: If the Patriots pick up a fifth-round pick in 2010 (they’re pick was traded to Tampa Bay for tight end Alex Smith), that pick will go to Oakland instead of the fourth-round pick.
Wherever I go, that's where I am.

The Raiders will be OK
Burgess wasn’t a high value trade based upon his recent production. Plus we will get to add picks sobeit if it is in a year or two. At the end of the day we rid ourselves of a player that didn’t want to be here. And what gets me is after a less than average year he decided to sit out. Good for Oaktown in getting something for this guy now. The Raiders are not looking bad, my only hope is for our offense to be effective in the pass game, J-Russ has to get his timing and chemistry right. And remember, we have Sammy Parker, and some other receivers we don’t even talk about, Sammy is out of Oregon and he is a good receiver, he played up there with Onterrio Smith out of Grant High in Sac & the Minn Vikings before he wrecked his career. I see promise for real improvement this year.
I can care less about the Pats or any other team for that matter. Right now it’s Raiders time!!! And Cable may get something done, we should at worse be 2nd in our division if we play, and since San Diego was 8-8 if they falter again, who knows..We can press to win the Div. We just need to score touchdowns..

I Was Electric About The Start Of Football
But the injury to Khalif is still fucking with me. I think if he was still injury-free, I would be a whole lot more electric. Also, I wanted to watch Frantz Joseph. Well, I guess we can’t have everything.
So our o-line is
LT – Mario
LG – ?. Injury to Gallery. I hope he returns.
C – Satele
RG – Cooper
RT – Green. Hopefully Khalif when he returns

The Raiders needed more players not draft picks
Trading a Burgess for future draft picks does not make any sense. Draft picks are not even guaranteed to make the team. The Raiders needed someone who could contribute in reture, especially with the Khalif & Gallery injuries, we need more depth on the O-line. The idea of having Cornell Green start at the RT spot again is downright scary. Yet we trade Burgess for draft picks instead of a starter for starter deal. Makes no sense.

you trade contracts not just players
considering that Burgess only had a year left on his contract before becoming a free agent and he clearly had minimal commitment to the Raiders, it’s a solid trade for us regardless of how he plays for the Pats. I’m convinced that they will address the o-line in some shape or form. It’s glaring. There must be some disgruntled linemen somewhere or some salary cap casualty coming up.
by raiders4liffe on Aug 7, 2009 1:08 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Fellas don't panic yet!!
Gallery is fine, Barnes is banged up but it’s not season ending or anything like that, and don’t think the Raiders don’t see what we see. This coach seems to have common sense. 1. We got rid of Burgess and his contract, let the Pat’s deal with him next season. 2. We have draft picks to trade for a Vet if one comes available that fits our team needs. The left tackle position is the key and I believe M. Hen can handle that, of course, you always need depth and it will be addressed. I believe it is far too early to panic, lets see how things go against Dallas when our 1 is against their 1.
We are early in camp there will be guys getting released that can play but were released due to their team being loaded at the position. Let’s just give Cable a chance, he has demonstrated he understands football, just the fact that he had guys work on their mental game for 5 days was MAJOR, man that’s brilliance!!! Our O line if it fails we had better hurry up and sign Vick, at least he can get out of the way….

Burgess decided not to play
Though football is a game we all love, it is a business at this level. Burgess a player under contract decided he did not want to play for Oakland…sobeit, however, you don’t get long term contract extensions based upon your play from 3 years ago. Burgess could have come out and earned his extension, but he chose not to.. This is not a bad trade when you are removing a negative influence from the roster, he would have been a distraction, so goes the business of pro football.
We will be fine without him, and I believe in the players we have in camp now. This Coaching staff is adding systems that should help our production across the board. Do I hate to see Burgess go, of course, but if he is going to go, now is the time to do it in that he doesn’t want to be with the Raiders.
