Q & A With Obviouman: Answering Any Chargers Questions You Have
Hey guys. My name is John and I run Bolts From The Blue, SB Nation's blog for the Chargers. Since the upcoming game between San Diego and Oakland is a Week 1 game, I know there must be a lot of questions from Raiders fans regarding the Chargers team and the players. I'd be happy to answer any question you pose in the comments section, and please Rec this FanPost so that it stays at the top throughout the weekend.
A few notes about me that will most likely come out in my answers to your questions:
- I like Norv Turner and think he's a good coach. I think he's a better coach now than he was when he was with Oakland, and I think the only reason the Chargers have yet to be to the Super Bowl with him as their coach is due to bad luck (injuries).
- Any questions involving Tila Tequila will be answered as briefly as possible. Not that I'm trying to hide anything, I just don't like talking about her.
- Unlike some of the Chargers fanbase, I am not a "Raider Hater". I like a lot of their players and have been impressed by their offseason moves (although the draft was questionable). I, for one, would like to see the Chargers/Raiders game get back to being an entertaining, competitive match-up.
- However, I do dislike a lot of the Raider fans that show up at Qualcomm. They're loud and obnoxious. I once went to a Chargers/Raiders MNF game and left before the game even started because I saw a Chargers fan get knifed by two Raiders fans in the bathroom. I'm not joking. I'm all for the black hole and a homefield advantage, but when you're in the situation where you can see your favorite team in somebody else's stadium I think you should be respectful.
- I live in Philadelphia, and therefore I know how good fans get thrown in with bad fans. I know a lot of Raider fans that aren't jackasses (my cousin for example) and I'm pretty sure, since you guys are all literate, you guys are part of that good group of fans that gets thrown in with the stabby fans. I feel bad for you and look forward to answering all of your Chargers-related questions.

I've got several!
Remember for every Raiders fan that pulls a knife, there’s another who paints himself black, drinks a few beers, talks smack at the opposing players coming out of the tunnel and then goes home. Most of us are like that, though I have been known to carry a knife. Just not to sporting events :-)
1) How much does LT have left in the tank? It might seem like a silly question, but he has seemed less effective the past year or two
2) If he goes down, can Sproles really carry the load? Do you think your team can benefit by giving some carries to Jacob Hester rather than having him be a straight fullback? I was a big fan of his at LSU.
3) Your outside linebackers are straight animals. What about your inside pair? Obviously Merriman and Phillips grab the headlines so those of us who don’t closely follow the team don’t hear much.
4) Forget whatever legal troubles Merriman may or may not have….does he have a long term future in SD? (Please say no)
5) Most experts have you picked the win the AFC West which is not surprising considering the various degrees of disarray the other teams are in. (I think the Raiders are less disastrous than the other two, but that’s another post) What surprised me is how many have you going to the Super Bowl. Do you honestly think you guys are that talented? I’m not disputing it; you very well might be, but I guess I had never really thought about it, you know?
6) Can you make Richard Seymour report?

I think he has plenty to offer with his vision (always his best asset) and speed. The issue is whether he can stay healthy. According to him, he’s changed his training regiment and is as healthy as ever. Then again, he said the same thing last year. I, and I’m probably the only one, think that he’d be much more effective for a longer period of time if he were to split carries.
If he can stay healthy all season, I can see another 1500+ yard season from him. The offensive line wasn’t healthy or good last year either, and they’re improved.

Crap, hit Post too soon
You’d think I was an amateur. Here’s the rest of the answers:
2) If he goes down, can Sproles really carry the load? Do you think your team can benefit by giving some carries to Jacob Hester rather than having him be a straight fullback? I was a big fan of his at LSU.
Jacob Hester was drafted to be a dual-threat, just like he was as LSU. Unfortunately, he’s shown himself to be very ineffective as a runner in the NFL. I think he’s just too slow. He’ll get a couple of FB runs up the gut each game, and they love him in the passing game, but he was moved to FB because he didn’t show much as a HB.
If LT goes down, Sproles’ role in the offense would remain the same. They’d rather not lose him in the return game. LT’s backup is essentially Michael Bennett, but he’ll see less time on the field than Sproles unless LT gets injured. So no, they don’t trust Sproles to carry the load.
3) Your outside linebackers are straight animals. What about your inside pair? Obviously Merriman and Phillips grab the headlines so those of us who don’t closely follow the team don’t hear much.
Stephen Cooper is a beast and always has been. He had 98 tackles in just 12 games last season. He’s up there with Phillips in terms of talent. The ILB spot next to Cooper was awful last year, filled by guys who could do one thing (Dobbins, Siler can stop the run) or nothing (Wilhelm, Derek Smith). This year the Chargers signed a free agent who was buried in Dallas by the name of Kevin Burnett, and he looks like a monster in the preseason thusfar. He lead the team in tackles in every preseason game, and played only against first-string offenses. Not only is he smart and fast, he looks really strong too. He’s somewhat unproven, since he’s never started a regular season game, but he’s already a great improvement over the 2008 mess.
4) Forget whatever legal troubles Merriman may or may not have….does he have a long term future in SD? (Please say no)
No. AJ Smith doesn’t like his off-the-field antics, and I don’t just mean having foursomes with 3 reality TV stars. The Chargers GM thinks Merriman is selfish and a self-promoter, and knows how much he will cost in free agency. Shawne will probably stick around in 2010 if a new CBA isn’t in place (he’d be a restricted free agent), but not beyond that. Larry English was drafted to take his spot.
On paper, there’s no more talented team in the league. Those same predictions have Rivers, Merriman and LT as MVP candidates. 20 out of the 22 starting positions are filled with either Pro Bowlers in the past or potential Pro Bowl players. What it always comes down to is injuries and coaching. Last year the Chargers had issues with both. Merriman was gone and LT was healthy for Week 1 only. Ted Cottrell did such a bad job with the defense that he was fired in-season and is now coaching in the UFL. So if the Chargers can manage to stay healthy, and Ron Rivera is the defensive genius he’s made out to be, this team has a great shot at the Super Bowl.
Just to prove that’s not just a fan’s perspective, Football Outsiders have crunched the numbers and their computers have spit out the Chargers as the best team in the NFL. Far and away the best team. Better than the 18-0 Patriots of two years ago. So the talent is there, as it has been, it’s just a matter of getting lucky.
6) Can you make Richard Seymour report?
Yes. Just let me talk Al Davis into offering him a 10 year, 100 million dollar contract. Seriously though, Richard Seymour loves playing football. He’ll report eventually. He’s just using the leverage he has to get money.

It's Jammer
Cromartie is more athletic, and therfore has more potential, but it’s Jammer all the way. If he didn’t have hands of stone, Quentin Jammer’s name would be up there with Asomugha and Champ Bailey as the elite CBs in the NFL. Jammer is never caught out of position, never bites on a fake and is so consistent with shutting down his receiver that opposing offenses almost never through in his direction (even though there’s almost no risk of him picking it off). He gets tested maybe once a game, and it usually end with him slapping the ball away easily.
Cromartie is Mr. Inconsistency. Even forgetting his down 2008 campaign, in which he played with a broken him. He goes for the pick and too often gets burned for it. Sometimes he plays off the receiver by 10 yards because he feels he can lure the QB into throwing his way and then use his speed to pick the ball off and take it to the house. It too often turns into an easy 10 yard gain for the offense. It Cro takes Jammer’s lead and gains that kindof consistency, he has the potential to be the next Deion Sanders. However, right now it still remains as potential only.

Thanks for answering our questions.
I am curious as to why you feel the line has improved. On paper I do not see it. Who is replacing Goff? Have the two rookie guards looked good? Also I know the Chargers lost some center depth with Newberry gone.
How has Jamal Williams looked this preseason? He is a great player and I think a big key to what the bolts do on D but he is getting older and has put some miles on that big body. I know he had something wrong with an arm last year, I think, any residuals of that and any worries about his health for the season?
How has Merriman looked so far on the field? He is coming off some major surgery.
The passing Defense was the team’s weakness last year and seemed bad enough to prevent this team from taking it to the next level. What have the Chargers done to address this?
Wherever I go, that's where I am.

I cannot stress enough how awful Newberry was last year. I think that man’s back is held together by string and toothpicks at this point. Tyronne Green, who is one of the rookie Guards, has looked decent but hasn’t been able to takeover the backup Center spot as the team hoped. Scott Mruczkowski, a proven backup who is almost good enough to start, will be the backup C, LG and RG and Green will back him up at all three spots.
The line has improved in a couple of ways. The biggest one is health. Last year the 3 best players on the line (McNeill, Dielman, Hardwick) each missed time and played with injuries the entire season. This year they’re all very healthy and look better than ever. Mike Goff has been replaced by rookie Louis Vasquez, who was so impressive in competing with the Kynan Forney for the RG spot that the team cut Forney. The Goff subtraction would be an improvement itself, but Vasquez is going to open some eyes around the league this season I think. He walks in as the biggest, strongest guy on the team and loves to push people around. Against Atlanta in the preseason, he blocked 3 guys on a screen pass by pushing them into each other. It was beautiful. Coming from Texas Tech, he needs to work on his run blocking, but he’s already been touted as one of the hardest working guys on the team so I don’t think it will be a problem.
How has Jamal Williams looked this preseason? He is a great player and I think a big key to what the bolts do on D but he is getting older and has put some miles on that big body. I know he had something wrong with an arm last year, I think, any residuals of that and any worries about his health for the season?
Last year his biggest problem was his knees. He had surgery on them before and after the 2008 season. Let’s face it, those knees can only support 350 lbs for so long. Jamal has been given a ton of rest in training camp and only played in one preseason game. The time he’s actually been on the field, he’s looked as dominating as ever. He says the surgery and the rest has made him feel like he’s 25 again. If he can stay healthy, which he’s done a great job of doing throughout his career, there’s no reason to believe he’ll be any less of a beast than he’s been.
How has Merriman looked so far on the field? He is coming off some major surgery.
Merriman played very little in week 1, a little bit more in week 2, and for almost the full half in week 3 of the preseason. Each game he looked a little bit better than the week before. He is not the dominating Merriman from 2007 and earlier, simply because he doesn’t trust his knee yet. He’s been given a fair amount of rest as well. Everyone’s realistic expectations is that he starts off slow and ends the season strong, as he continues to gain confidence in the knee and get back into the rhythm of the game. The short answer to your question is “Good, but not dominating”.
The passing Defense was the team’s weakness last year and seemed bad enough to prevent this team from taking it to the next level. What have the Chargers done to address this?
A couple of things. The biggest reason for the poor pass defense was a complete and total lack of a pass-rush. To help those matters, the team is bringing back Merriman and adding Larry English. They’ve also switched defensive coordinators to Ron Rivera, who had some success late in the season and in the playoffs after taking over for Ted Cottrell (a Rivera-coached defense made Russell look silly late in 08). Rivera has promised to bring heat from everywhere, making sure the opposing QB never gets comfortable in the pocket.
The second thing done to improve the pass defense was the addition of Kevin Burnett. The Chargers were incredibly bad at defending TEs last season because of the players the team was playing at ILB next to Stephen Cooper. Burnett was signed as a “pass-coverage specialist” LB, but has quickly shown himself to be the total package. If he plays in the regular season like he did in the preseason, he may be the best LB on the Chargers squad.
The final thing that will improve the secondary, and it seems this is the case with many of the Chargers position groups, is health. Cromartie is no longer playing with a broken hip (which he did for all of 2008) and Clinton Hart’s neck and hand are fine. Both players are really good with a pass rush (so they can’t make mistakes or get beaten deep), but struggled mightily without one. Having them healthy and taking away those 10 seconds to throw we were giving QBs should go a long way towards improving the pass defense.

Ahh hope (and health) springs eternal in the preseason
Thanks for the insightful answers! I thought Goff was a solid guard, but I would certainly take a fans word over mine on this. If the bolts line is better than last year than I am truely scared.
I think their will be two big keys to the D: Williams’s health and the pass rush. I hate to admit it but the bolts look solid and I think it is lame way for the Raiders to start the season.
Oh please sweet, little, wise baby Jesus let Seymour contribute on MNF! I am growing less hopeful this will happen.
One last question- if Williams does go down, do they have a solid back-up NT?
Wherever I go, that's where I am.
Goff was a very solid guard up until 2008, when he fell off completely. I still think he’s one of the best O-linemen in Chargers history in terms of consistency.
One last question- if Williams does go down, do they have a solid back-up NT?
No. None at all. It’s one of the few places we have zero depth. The Chargers drafted Vaughn Martin and hope he’s the eventual replacement, but coming out of Canadian college he’s still trying to catch up and be more consistent. The Chargers also traded for Travis Johnson, a 3-4 DE/DT who has been underachieving and generally driving the Texans nuts. Those are probably the two best options. We have a young, undersized kid named Ogemdi Nwagbuo (how’s that for a name?) that is also in that mix as a backup NT as well, but he’s unproven.

More to the point about the stabby fans....
Chances are if a Raider fan stabbed another fan, he/she was going to stab someone regardless.
A criminal as a fan is still a criminal, and would be a criminal whether or not he/she was a Raider fan. It’s still impugning the rest of the fan base to say "well there are stabby ones, but you guys are the “good ones…”" so to speak. It’s beside the point though, because we get it, but I just wanted to throw that out there, I don’t mean to seem like I’m taking a shot at you or anything haha.

I understand. The worse part about the scene was that there were two Raider fans holding the Charger fan up while the third got stabby. You’re right, those guys would be criminals no matter what, but unfortunately a lot of criminals decide to be fans of the Raiders for whatever reason. I’ve been to a lot of Chargers games at the Q, and Raider games are the only one where the people are completely out of hand.
While I understand that’s probably just a few people making a bad name for many, it’s a consistent problem with your team’s fanbase…at least when they play in San Diego.

Yes. Absolutely. The Chargers had the #20 rushing offense last year and still managed to make it to the playoffs.
To put it simply, we have the horses to match up. VJ matches up favorably with Asomugha, Gates is a beast over the middle, I don’t think you have anybody that can defend Malcom Floyd or Legedu Naanee in the slot, etc. etc. What it really comes down to are the lines though. I think the Chargers O-line is significantly better than the Raiders D-line, and whether that equals a strong rushing attack or lots of time for Rivers to throw, we’ll put points up either way.

curious...
in what way does vincent jackson match up favorably against nnamdi? considering what nnamdi did to much greater WRs last year, i want to see how you defend your boy.lol
ya, i agree w/what your saying about the play on the lines. and ya, its hard to disagree that the raiders dl <<< chargers ol, especially if seymour wont be here yet.
Don't confuse me with the facts, my mind is made up!!
First off, the last time they met VJ went for 5 catches 148 yards and a TD against Nnamdi, which included a 59 yard TD pass where VJ burned him.
Quite frankly, although it took him time to refine his game, Vincent is on an equal playing field with Greg Jennings, Plaxico (when playing) and Javon Walker (prior to getting injured last season). He’s typically bigger than who’s covering him (he’s got 2 inches and 30 pounds on Asomugha), can match their speed and can jump out of the stadium to win a jump-ball.
I don’t think he’ll completely destroy Nnamdi, but I don’t think he’ll be shut out either.

Nice post, John
I’ve met so many Chargers fans that…
Let’s just say you’re an exception to the rule. You definitely know your team. Injuries and coaching were most definitely the downfall, but I’d lean to the coaching part.
I love Turner, but just think he lacks something. Not sure if it’s intensity, ability to oversee the whole thing and play the game the way a coach should.
The guys on those great Dallas teams laud Turner when they speak of key ingredients. Rarely have I heard mention of the head guys. Not Landry, Not Johnson…
HOF guys like Emmitt and Irvin, Aikman and others. Novacek. Not a better offensive coordinator in the game.
That being said, I’m not looking forward to Norville chalking up another W against my Raiders, and am praying for a miracle of a glimpse of run stopping ability to show up Monday night.
I’ll have the real questions for you about SD if they don’t win the division. I’m not with all the SB predictions for now, but if the bolts come out dominating in the way they should, as most are predicting, I’ll be a believer.
Rivers throws the best deep middle ball in the game, but I hate that he’s got a big mouth, especially at that position.
Sigh
Okay, I appreciate the compliments, but I need to straighten some things out.
-I agree that Norv Turner came to San Diego missing something. I personally think it was intensity. He was too boring, too much of an X’s and O’s guy. However, in December of 2007 I think he turned that around. Suddenly he was screaming at everything during games and getting into it because he felt pressure, and the players loved it. Since then, I think he’s been a fantastic coach.
Look at the playoff games he’s won (Colts, Colts, Titans) and then look at the ones he’s lost. In 2007 he very nearly beat the undefeated Patriots even though his starting QB was playing with a torn ACL (and a sprained MCL in his other knee), he was without his future HOF running back and his star TE’s toe was so bad he couldn’t even walk the week prior to the game. Not to mention it was in New England and the Chargers had the game sealed with an interception before Marlon McCree fumbled it right back. Does that sound like bad luck or bad coaching? In 2008, the Chargers were steamrolled by the SB-winning Steelers and their dominant defense. Again, the Chargers had to make due without Tomlinson and Darren Sproles got something like 0.6 yards per carry in the game. Just like the rest of the season, the Chargers could not stop the Steelers passing attack in the second half because their best pass-rusher was missing. However, they still made it close.
Do either one of those sound like coaching gaffes? He’s beaten the Colts without Rivers (Volek led the winning drive in 07) and without LT (Sproles went nuts), and that’s a SB winning franchise. I don’t know that there’s a coach in the league who could’ve won either the NE or PITT games under those circumstances.
Also, Rivers big mouth was a problem in 2007. He had grown up a trash-talker, had always been a trash-talker, and nobody cared until he made it to the NFL. He was just having a good time. The guy doesn’t even curse, so you know it wasn’t bad. When he goes on the field, he plays like he’s playing in his backyard….so that’s why it makes it more fun for him to talk a little smack. With that being said, after getting ridiculed for it in 2007, he decided he would shut up during games and create no distractions for his team. He hasn’t said a peep since. So to say he’s got a big mouth is silly, when you’re comparing 2 instances (trash-talking Cutler, Colts fans) with two full seasons of him not saying a word.

hey there john
im a raider fan living in sd n i gotta say its a really bad situation to live in lol
in my experience charger fans are huge trash talkers, but i dont know wether its because raider fans here are humbled due to being constantly drowned in a sea of blue and yellow every sunday or what lol
dont really mean anything by it just thought i should add it in from someone who lives down here and has to actually wear a knife under his J-Russ jersey when walking downtown just in case. n dont worry im not of the stabby ilk i think im actually quite peaceful. my girlfriend is a charger fan and (i love bragging about this) i went out and spend about seventy bucks so she would be the first one on the schoolyard to be wearing the new and improved jersey.
but my question is to you:
it seems to me theres a trend.
every year everyone declares the chargers start the season the entire world swears theyre goin all the way. even though repeatedly the pats have been a pretty familiar theme. ive heard talks about how, even though there is the injuries etc. etc., theyre just not a superbowl caliber team. on paper theyre sure things but when it comes playoff time everyone seems to step up their game and the chargers just dont seem to get it. your thoughts?
another question pretaining to the playoffs:
every year they actually do reach the playoffs LT gets hurt. ever since theyve started goin to the playoffs… maybe since around 04? hes gotten mysteriously hurt in the playoffs and just winds up sitting there on the bench hiding under his visor, then is back the next season raring to go im sorry but you cant convince me thats just a coincedence. can you see any problems with LT? does he just not want to take any blame for the loss? is he not confident enough? this question is more for my family than me, because (and i apologize for this) i love it when he looks like a sad sack on that bench. but theyre just heartbroken each and every year.
again, if i sound rude or offensive its the conditions i live in on sundays. my godfather actually says i been tainted by the devil because i root for the raiders. but like me us in the nation are everywhere. u cant keep us out.
-First off, I understand your situation. I’ve found most Chargers fans to be loud trash-talkers towards Raider fans. I honestly think it has more to do with the sorry teams the Raiders have fielded in the last few years that makes them more comfortable.
-Second, my thoughts about the Chargers not upping their game in the postseason? Inconclusive. You can’t say they don’t play at a higher level, because each of the last two seasons they’ve beaten the Colts while being battered and bruised. I think them not getting to where they’re projected each year has a lot more to do with untimely injuries than anything else. However, the Colts were in this situation a few years back and wound up getting a SB victory eventually. So I stay positive.
-Third, that’s ridiculous. You really think LT is quitting in the playoffs? You think he’s faking his injuries because he’s not confident enough or doesn’t want to take the blame for a loss? Absolutely, totally absurd. The reason LT has wound up on the sidelines in each of the past two seasons (he was fine in the playoffs before 07) is a simple one….the guy has a ridiculous amount of mileage on his legs. Just look at the active leaders in rushing attempts:
1. Edgerrin James (133 carries in 2008)
2. Warrick Dunn (186 carries in 2008)
3. LaDainian Tomlinson (292 carries in 2008)
4. Fred Taylor (143 carries in 2008)
5. Jamal Lewis (279 carries in 2008)
6. Shaun Alexander (11 carries in 2008)
So out of the top 6 most worked RBs in the NFL, only two of them has more than 186 carries in 2008. Tomlinson had the most. When everybody else has figured out how to effectively use a player that has this much mileage on their legs, the Chargers stubbornly say that LT will get the ball even more in 2009. I think Norv Turner is out to kill LT.

thanks john
jus thought about it… been hearing alot of anti-LT sentiment as people start to see how much of a great RB sproles is. the whole playoff thing is just that thats what keeps buzzing around the watering holes when the playoffs start. and i kinda agree on the whole turner killing LT thing…. it does seem like it with the drama i think hes phasing him out until sproles is ready to be an every down back. how do you feel about releases that may have helped the chargers right when they needed them (michael turner, drew brees, junior seau, lorenzo neal, olshansky, eli manning if he counts) i see a somewhat trend going on that i find unappealing about the chargers. you think it could happen again? maybe to LT? definitely not rivers, but most likely merriman? what about gates?

some things about the game last night
1st off, sorry for sounding like a jackass broken record… but for some strange reason LT shows up the next day with a sprained ankle…. when and where did this happen? he was fine up until the 4th quarter……
2nd off, you must be impressed… we definitely showed up to that game… sorry to say you guys didnt do the same until the 4th quarter…. at halftime only one word could describe the game… domination
3rd, that recalling the louis murphy touchdown was pure b.s. it was a catch n everyone know it. huge blown call…. i think its just a bit unfair… that touchdown would have obviously been the factor to swing the game the other way…. i would like to, at this time compare this call to a certain catastrophe last year by the name of ed hochule (of course being a charger fan, ur getting terrible flashbacks at this moment) but while there was a massive uproar, a somewhat demotion to Mr. Ed, and a change in the rule books for you guys, all we get is one big “suck it up”…. its frustrating really….. as soon as it happened i knew we would lose by less than a touchdown…..
last but not least, the matchup every charger fan i knew disregarded. vincent jackson vs. nnamdi asomugha… charger fans simply disregarded aso. because vincent jackson has the height advantage. i actually won a bet because a charger friend swore jackson would be constantly be beating aso deep. i naturally won, being that the only touchdown he got was because nnamdi had a bad position. must say it was a very nicely thrown ball by rivers and an extremely good catch by jackson, but not the scenario charger faithfuls swore would happen.
just need verification that im not completely talking out of my ass. please clarify if you dont agree with any
