Chiefs Week: Why the Raiders Are Going To Win.

"In Oakland...the games you always really wanted to come see were the Niners and the Chiefs. You grew up hating red...It goes deep. It's not just the teams. It's the organizations, you know, which organization is better? These are two teams that played in the old AFL against each other. Most of the history goes back to it. They've been AFC West rivals for a very, very long time. It's always been the must-win game."

Kirk Morrison

"It's a dark game. I characterize it as a lot of darkness." When asked whether "dark" was meant as 'a good vs. evil dark'—"You can read between the lines."

Gunther Cunningham, former Raiders defensive coordinator and former Chiefs Head coach and defensive coordinator, currently working as the Detroit Lions defensive coordinator.

"Only one word: Blood."

—Harvey Williams (who was with Oakland that season after four years in Kansas City) in a 1995 NBC interview for the team's first meeting in Oakland since 1981.

The Chiefs are one of two teams, that the Raiders have played ten or more times, that the Raiders do not have a winning record against.

To look at the history of this match-up is to glimpse at the history of the AFL itself, but with the Raiders strong performance in a tough week one loss, Raider fans are more concerned about the future than the past.

Star-divide

Kansas City is a three point favorite heading into this game.  Take the points and the Raiders!  Let’s look at the recent history of these two teams to help us analyze the upcoming game.

Obviously both of these teams are different than they were last year, but that does not mean we will not be able to gain some insight by looking into last years match-ups.

Raiders 23 Chiefs 8 Week 2 ‘08 at Arrowhead Stadium

The Raiders victory in week 2 was a direct result of the Raiders dominance in the run game.  McFadden, Bush, and Fargas had 46 carries for 297 yards.  That’s 6.46 yards a carry.

The Chiefs running backs had 17 carries for 34 yards.  Easy math on that one makes it two yards a carry.

The passing game was an after thought for the Raiders, as it was for most of Lane Kiffin’s Raider coaching career.

Jamarcus was 6/17 with 55 yards and only, while only one of those receptions was to a wide receiver.

The Chiefs quarterbacks, Huard and Thigpen, were 16 for 37 and 168 yards.

The Raiders tallied five sacks to the Chiefs zero.

Chiefs 20 Raiders 13 Week 13 ’08 Oakland Coliseum

The Chiefs won the turnover and big play battle, while being able to slow down the Raiders ground game.

One of the Chiefs two touchdowns came on a 67 yard fumble return when Lechler tried a pitch to Janikowski on a fake field goal.  The Raiders lost two fumbles in this game.

Raiders backs ran the ball 25 times for 95 yards.  That’s 3.8 yards a carry.  Fargas had 18 of the carries and McFadden seven.

Russell was 10/28 for 132 yards.  Only one of those completions was to a receiver and that was for zero yards on a hook and latteral play.  Zach Miller was the leading receiver for both games.

The Chiefs backs had 26 carries for 96 yards.  That’s 3.7 yards a carry.  In this game

Thigpen had 11 carries for 48 yards.

Thigpen was 15/22 with 162 yards (110 of those yards were to Tony Gonzalez) and an INT.

Again the Chiefs had zero sacks.  The Raiders tallied one.  The Raiders were 3-13 on third downs while the Chiefs converted at 50 percent.

Onto ‘09

This being only the second week of the season, it is hard to get a good analysis on the trends of teams strengths and weaknesses- the sample size is just too small.

I am going to look at anyway.

Ravens 38 Chiefs 24 Week One ‘09 M&T Bank Stadium

The Chiefs hung in this game by winning the turnover battle.

The Chiefs blocked a punt and recovered it in the endzone.  The Chiefs fumbeled twice but did not lose either of those.  They picked off Flaco once and returned it for 70 yards.

Croyle was efficient and smart and had decent protection.

Croyle was 16/24 and 177 yards with two td’s.  The Ravens tallied three sacks and the Chiefs one.

Croyle threw to the TE’s five times for one catch and 10 yards, the WR’s 14 for 10 and 132 yards, and the backs five times for five catches and 35 yards.

The Ravens dominanted the ground game.

The Chiefs backs carried 16 times for 27 yards.

he Ravens backs carried 25 times for 171 yards.  That’s 6.87 yards a carry.

Despite the success on the ground the Ravens let Flacco air it out.  He was 26/43 with 306 yards.

He threw to the WR’s 22 times for 12 completions and 167 yards, the backs 13 times for nine completions and 66 yards, and the TE eight times for five completions and 74 yards

The Chiefs were seconds away from being doubled in time of possesion.

Outlook:

The Raiders need to protect the ball.  Especially since they are playing on the road for the Chiefs home opener.  The Chiefs are going to be amped up and the fans are going to be loud and ravenous.  The Raiders cannot feed this monster with turnovers.

With healthy backs and an offensive line, they should be able to establish the ground game and win the time of possesion battle.

The Chiefs will stack the box and try and force the Raiders to pass.  This should open up the field for Zach Miller to have another solid game.

He was their best weapon in the passing game against the Chiefs last year and Heap was the Ravens most efficient weapon in the passing game against the Chiefs last week.

Expect the Raiders backs to get involved in the passing game as well.  Higgins appears doubtful for this week, so look for McFadden to line up at WR in multiple plays.

Also, Russell has always done well at finding his backs in the passing game, while the Chiefs new 3-4 scheme allowed the Ravens just over five yards per pass attempt to backs last week.

Russell should have time to deliver the ball.  The Chiefs struggled with the pass rush last year and have not shown any improvement this year.

Look for Russell to improve on his numbers from last week.  He will need some help from his receivers to do this and that, of course, is the big unkown.

The Raiders young receivers will be going against much younger corners than they did last week.  They should be able to make a couple of big plays in this game.

However, it will not be shocking to see the chaos and noise, combined with their inexperience, to lead to some miscues in route running and/or ball handling.

On the defensive side, the Raiders should be able to build on what looks like their massively improved run defense.

The Chiefs did not have much success running the ball last year on the Raiders and did little to improve their run game this year, besides adding the aging Mike Goff to the line.

The Chiefs run numbers were pitiful last week, but it was against the Ravens D.  Being embarrassed last week, while being fueled by the home opener this week, look for the Chiefs running game to give the Raiders their best effort.

Unless the passing game catches fire and opens up some holes it is reasonable to assume the Raiders can handle the Chiefs running game.

Publicly the Chiefs still do not know who will be helming their passing game.  It might not matter much.  The Raiders should be able to generate a decent pass rush.  If Cassel does not have full mobility it would probably be wise to hold him out.

The Chiefs found decent success passing to the WR’s last week and this will be an interesting match-up this week.

The Raiders secondary matches up well with the Chiefs receivers.  The Raiders have talked about having Asomugha shadow the opposing teams best WR this year (this was not the case last week).  I doubt they will ever find a more appropriate game to do that than this one.

The Chiefs face a fierce decline in WR talent after Dwayne Bowe.  Whoever is on Bowe should have the benefit of having safety help most of the game, because:

Let all of Raider Nation say this together, Tony Gonzalez is gone!  The throw to the TE was by far their least efficient pass play last week.

Conclusion:

The Raiders seem to have the Chiefs beat in every facet of the game except the passing game (and kick off return coverage) but look for the Chiefs difficulties handling the run to open up a few big plays for the Raiders passing offense.

The Raiders D also matches up better with the Chiefs passing game then the Chiefs D against the Raiders (thanks to Miller and the backs).

If the Raiders protect the ball, they will win.  Barring any big turnovers or no look Lechler to Janikowski flip plays this should be a Raider victory.

Prediction:

Raiders 24  Chiefs 13

38 to 13?

Really?? Come on now, where do you expect all those points to come from? We all know Jmarcus can only throw over the middle about 10 yards and be on target. Anything to the outside he will miss by a mile. All any team has to do against the Raiders to get a W is stack the box and force Russel to beat you with his brain (not gonna happen). Im not going to come in here and say the Chiefs are going to beat you guys by a mile but come on 38-13? You guys are very delusional!
Chiefs win 24-10.

If he is throwing over the middle of the field he has shown accuracy way past ten yards.

Look at last weeks throws to Miller and on the final drive. He delivered a beautiful ball to Higgins 20 yards downfield and then was on the mark to Murphy 50 yards down the field.
And like you said the Chiefs are going to be stacking the box and Russell should have all day to throw against the Chiefs anemic pass russ rush. I see a couple of big pass plays this week.

24-10 Chiefs win, really? The Raiders D matches up well with the Chiefs O. Where do you see the Chiefs taking advantage of the Raiders D?

Wherever I go, that's where I am.

Dude

Jamarcus threw for like 40 percent completion last week. Thats just god awful. Did you not pay attention to all the throws he missed? Just because he made one or two nice throws doesn’t mean those nasty throws didn’t happen. Hell our back up QB had a better game against a much better D than your boy did. Just saying….

The Chiefs will win the turnover battle in this one. J Russ will throw at least two picks on Sunday. He just isn’t very good, sorry guys. Our D will score a TD and put us in position for the O to score another. Ill Stand by my prediction of 24-10 and ill even show up after the game to either rub it in your face or eat some crow. Either way it will be a good game as they usaully are between the Chiefs and Raiders.

Jamarcus's inaccuarcy usually comes on throws outside of the hash marks.

I didn’t say he had a great game or did not miss throws- I did say his accuracy over the middle is solid. This was evident last year as well.

Also he was working with two rookie receivers that cost his completion percentage with drops and bad route running. Five or six of his incompletions were drops. His first INT was Murphy’s fault and the second was on a hail mary

INT’s are typically not Russell’s weakness. Fumbles, due to lack of pocket presence, are a bigger concern with him, but with the Chiefs lack of a pass rush it should not be an issue.

Obviously he needs to play better, but his performance last week was not nearly as bad as the stats suggest and I think it is betting against the percentages to say his performance will cost the Raiders this game.

Good luck to your hopes of the Chiefs getting 14 points basically due to their defense. The Chiefs defense just isn’t that good… sorry. The Ravens had over 500 yards of offense last week- The Ravens!

I can’t wait to see how this one plays out and if I am wrong you can rub it in all you want! Chiefs week is always fun!

Wherever I go, that's where I am.

by Rich Langford on Sep 18, 2009 2:04 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

We basically got 14 points off

the Ravens with our D. That is if you include special teams. Now im not saying its going to happen again but id be willing to bet we get some points from the d this week as well.

We will see about Jruss, but i don;t care about drops, we had drops as well. If you want to pick stats that you choose to ignore, I will ignore when Mark Bradley came up half a yard short twice on 3rd down because he didn’t pay attention to the sticks. With that said we wouldn’t have looked nearly as bad on 3rd down percantage….Im just saying you cant polish a turd….

Don't blame me, I voted for content of character.

by paratrooper on Sep 19, 2009 2:38 AM PDT up reply actions

No one is ignoring stats-

in fact I am paying attention to the stats and saying he was not as bad as his base stats suggest. Also you said he Russell has no accuracy over ten yards, but that is simply not true. He has proven his accuracy is better between the hash marks.

In your last post you ignored the stat that I brought up, which was the Ravens amassed 501 yards of offense.

The point about the third downs is valid. It sounds like with some easy adjustments the Chiefs would not have been as bad on third down. That is not polishing a turd- that is analyzing the statistics.

Good luck having a defense score points for you every week.

Wherever I go, that's where I am.

by Rich Langford on Sep 19, 2009 12:03 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

if russell is better than the base stats

then why can’t that be true for the chiefs. if you actually watched the game and not read a figure in the newspaper then you would know that the defense kept us in the game until the 4th. while far from great d, if the chiefs d plays as well as they did against the ravens then you raiders should be scared because your O isn’t half what Baltimore’s is

by Leaf on Sep 19, 2009 4:30 PM PDT up reply actions

the ravens and chargers have VERY similar offense, if not san diego has a BETTER offense than the RAVENS!

look how we dominated the chargers offense, both running and passing(if i remember, the chiefs had trouble against passing with joe flacco getting over 300 yards on 30 something completions) until late in the 4th. How can you not say that the chiefs offense is going to face more trouble than our offense against your defense? even though we might not throw it as much, but our running game was dominant last week, and it should be no difference come tomorrow.

by patriotguy on Sep 19, 2009 4:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Well I am not sold on the greatness of Baltimore's O

And they tore up the Chiefs d in a number of ways. Including the run game and throws to the backs and TE’s. Which happens to be the Raiders strengths as well.

And I never said it couldn’t be true about the stats and the Chiefs d. I said that comment was ignored and basically still is- other than you pointing out it was close until the fourth. Which anyone could see, as you say, by looking at figures in a newspaper.

Wherever I go, that's where I am.

And teams are always super pumped to play in primetime.

The Chiefs had a fair game against the Ravens on the road with our backup QB.

Neither team is any good.

Raiders could have won on a last minute field goal but Cable called a FG fake and Janekowski fumbled it…. Oh wait, that was last year…

Raiders 27, Chiefs 17

The Raiders will dominate the running game for over 200 yards and two touchdowns (one for McFadden, one for Bush). Russell will bounce back, especially with plenty of time to throw in the pocket against KC’s anemic pass rush. I also expect the Raiders special teams to bounce back a bit too, giving KC long fields.

Cassel/Croyle will have a fair day, but it’s going to be tough sledding for Larry Johnson against the new-look Raiders defensive line, forcing KC’s offense into tough 3rd down situations. The Chiefs were only 2 for 10 on 3rd down against the Ravens; the Chargers were only 5 for 12 against the Raiders.

What are your thoughts on the Raiders passing game vs. Chiefs pass d?

Also the Chiefs were efficient throwing to the backs last week averaging 7 yards per pass attempt. The Raiders did well in defending the pass to the backs for the first three quarters and then….

Wherever I go, that's where I am.

by Rich Langford on Sep 18, 2009 1:37 PM PDT up reply actions

14 of KC's points last week directly attributable to turnovers/special teams

One of the areas that should also be mentioned is turnovers and special teams. KC won the turnover battle against the Ravens, leading to a punt block recovered for a TD as well as an INT returned for 70 yards that led to a short field for the Chiefs.

The Raiders coverage team struggled against Darren Sproles, but I expect them to fare better against the Chiefs. It also sounds like JLH is a game-time decision, so he may still be able to return punts, while handing his WR duties over to Walker, DHB, and Watkins.

To ensure the game goes as we hope it will, the Raiders need to be secure with the ball.

Prevent John Marshall from running the prevent defense!

by LiveAdam on Sep 18, 2009 2:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Of course these guys recd this up

This the largest display of blatant homerism I have ever seen. I will agree that the Raiders have an advantage in the trenches on both sides of the ball. Maybe even in the RB department. Maybe. ( you forgot about J. Charles who will kill you if you don’t account for him )

But to say your secondary has an advantage over our WRs is the most ridiculous statement I have heard this week. Bowe and Bradley are going to OWN your CBs tomorrow in such a bad way. Asomugha is THE MOST OVERRATED DB IN THE NFL. Bowe will make him look like a clown.

Its also very convenient the way you failed to mention the poor excuse for WRs on the Raider team vs our extremely talented secondary. Your WRs will have a very long day tomorrow and it’s going to be much worse for Russell. The Chiefs will have AT LEAST 2 ints against your offense tomorrow. J-Mac is the least accurate passer I have seen in the NFL in a looong time. He is worse than Tyler Thigpen and if you read our site, you will realize that I H8 Thigpen.

And my last point is, you say that as of right now Cassel is the better QB but won’t be next time we meet. Why the hell would you say something like that? Do you think Russell is going to improve and Cassel will stay the same? He is, and will always be a better QB than Russell be cause Russell is lazy and doesn’t do anything to improve his game. If he did, people wouldn’t be labeling him a first round bust (which he is )

You guys had a nice homefield advantage last week but, you will NOT have that benefit this week. Arrowhead will be ROCKIN!!! To be honest, I don’t even see how you lost last week against San Diego. Oh I know it’s because your coach sucks and he let them walk out of your house with a game you should have won. Remember this too. We lost to SD twice last year by one point and we are waaaay better this year than we were then. Just in case you are feeling real good about that “moral victory” against a division foe.

I really hoe Russell does have a very strong arm though cuz he’s gonna need it to pick himself up off the turf tomorrow. Dude weighs what? 300 pounds??

Larry Johnson vs. the D-Line and linebackers= Raiders win. LJ is very inconsistent and only has about two good games a year. If the Raiders dominated Sproles and Tomlinson, LJ is going to be practically a pushover

good thing those games are against the raiders :p

by Leaf on Sep 19, 2009 4:36 PM PDT up reply actions

First post here

I predict Raiders 24, Chiefs 13.

The Chargers are a considerably more stout defense, particularly against the run, than are the Chiefs. I feel that McFadden will break at least one long run on Sunday.

On Monday we held the Chargers to under 80 rushing yards and we physically dominated their offensive line. The Chiefs have nowhere near that kind of talent at either RB or OL. I say we hold Larry Johnson to under 50 yards. My only concern is Jamaal Charles. He isn’t as shifty as Sproles, but he is just as fast.

Cassell is a good QB (if he plays) and we should not underestimate him or Dwayne Bowe, but it’s hard to complete a pass from your backside. I expect the Raiders D-line to dominate all game long.

These are my principles. If you don't like them, I have others. -Groucho Marx

Nice impartial analysis

Wrecked. This game is a big unknown and anyone who says otherwise is delusional. Baltimore was a very good team, and they had a very good game plan. They picked on backup cornerback Maurice Legget early. Still KC held them to a ton of third an longs, but they were able to consistently convert. KC should have a different/better defense if Brandon Flowers is healthy.

Similarly on offense, there is no comparison, Cassel is by far the best QB on the Chiefs. He hasn’t played much yet. So, I think it will be entertaining for both sides to watch Cassel make his debute.

KC fans love Raider week, and actually it had gotten a little lopsided. I’m looking forward to a competitive game at a rocking Arrowhead stadium!

The original post indicated we are working with a dangerously small sample size.

Also as they say on any given sunday….

No one has ever accused the Ravens of having a very good offense. Flowers being healthy won’t effect the Raiders much as they are not counting on much from the rookie WR’s. That being said, the Chiefs could use him.

I expect the only hope the Chiefs have to stop the run is to load up the box, which should leave the secondary hanging a bit. Especially considering the Chiefs get little or no pressure on the QB.

Using your logic isn’t Cassel being by far the best QB on the Chiefs a big unkown? Have they announced if he is going to play yet?

Wherever I go, that's where I am.

All good points

I wasn’t being sarcastic, I really thought it was a nice impartial analysis.

If I was coaching KC, that’s exactly what I would do, is load up the box, and put the game on JaMarcus’s shoulders. Normally, I like blitzing and getting pressure, but KC should just stack the line of scrimmage in this game.

Cassel is a huge unknown. That’s my point. No one can predict this one without a crystal ball, that’s why they play the game.

Chiefs made Heap look like he was Tony G or Witten or something. Raiders can make big plays over the middle if KC’s inside backers don’t step up their play big.

It’ll be interesting to see if the Chiefs blitz much. Russell can be prone to holding the ball to long and fumbling. The O-line picked up everything well last week, but the right side is definately suspect.

Here is how I see it going down.

Chiefs score a last minute touchdown with about 20 seconds to go to put them up by 3. Chiefs pooch kick it to about Oaklands 19 yard line and Higgins takes it to the 33. Janikowski kicks a 74 yard field goal to tie the game with no time on the clock. Goes into overtime, Chiefs win on a 89 yard fieldgoal from Succup.

Which one of your back up QB that plays doesn't matter.

Our defense will be up to par. With Seymour getting a whole week to practice he should have a good game. Also that frees up Kelly to not be double teamed. Our defense is playing inspired football. Plus we will run the ball and control the clock. That’s why I predict the low score.

That said, I was really impressed with the Raidaaaa’s on Monday Night. Why did you all go to that prevent defense anyway?

Every team has weaknesses. Right now, you’re probably about two years ahead of us in the rebuilding process, except at Quarterback. JaMarcus has a lot of work to do. Since it’s a quarterback driven league, I believe if Cassel is close to 100%, and if some turnovers come into play, KC has a good chance.

Regardless, it’s Chiefs vs. Raiders. These games traditionally aren’t settled by more than 3 points no matter how good or bad we are. Let’s get it going!

Why will the defense be better?

They were 24th in the NFL in points last year and 27th in yards. Has that much changed?? The defense has been pretty crappy for the last six years.

That’s not meant to be a shot at the Raiders…the Chiefs have been the same way for the last few years and we certainly don’t expect the defense to rise.

by Joel Thorman on Sep 18, 2009 7:09 PM PDT up reply actions

The Raiders biggest weakness was certainly defending the run...

the additions of Ellis and especially Seymour solved the weakest points of the Raiders run d, the ends. This allows Kelley to face one on one blocking and for the speedy linebackers to face less o lineman in pursuit of the backs.

The secondary also looks improved. Chris Johnson finished the year strong at corner and started this year off even stronger. And Michael Huff may finally be in his natural position, deep safety. He had his best game as a pro against the Chargers.

It is certainly not taken as a shot. I can understand anyone’s skepticism as to the Raiders having improved at anything. I believe Seymour really did change the dynamics of this defense.

Also, the Raiders ditched Rob Ryan. He is a crap d coordinator and had a pitiful defensive debut with the Browns last week.

14 of your points came from help on D, ST. I believe the Ravens D is on the decline this year as well. We ran all night right at SD up the gut and couldn’t stop it, so I don’t see how KC thinks that’s all they need to do to win this game. Zach Miller will have a field day.

Score? But Raiders will win.

First of all home field advantage means nothing cuz the raiders spanked kc in kc last year. Its obvious that with the exception of sd the afc west is rebuilding. The raiders are farthest along in the rebuilding process in my opinion. Last week kc had 14 points from their d, that leaves only 10 from their o… Raiders put up 20, all o, and should have been more like 27, cosidering the td, that was a td, was called back, and the fumble by mac would have at least been a field goal. I believe cable is the real deal. The raiders have talent and it is starting to show. They are a young team and will have growing pains but I expect that this year they will improve each game. KC is nothing compared to sd and the raiders gave that game to sd in my opinion. Raiders win fo sho. GO RAIDERS!!!

by SAVAGEMATT on Sep 18, 2009 5:32 PM PDT reply actions

San Diego is actually not very good

Kansas City gift wrapped both games for them last year. It took Dwayne Bowe muffing an on-side kick and some other ridiculously silly play for San Diego to beat a 2-14 team by, if I am not mistaken 1 point, and 2 points.

If you think home field advantage means nothing, you’ve never smelled the BBQ, and seen the fog at Arrowhead, and you’ve never dressed up like it’s Halloween at the Colliseum. It means something.

Yea, Raiders are further ahead in the rebuilding process, except when Al Davis takes two steps back (DeAngelo Hall), except for Quarterback. If Matt Cassel is close to 100%, that should be the difference. It is a QB driven league, look at who pulled out the close games last week, Brady, Manning, Rivers, etc. Call him a system quarterback if you want, but KC has a huge advantage at the QB position.

Like I said, It’s Chiefs Raiders, look for a 3 point game, it doesn’t matter who’s good and who’s not!

Negative Ghost Rider the pattern is full...

by cpa913 on Sep 18, 2009 5:51 PM PDT up reply actions

here's what i think.

raiders had plenty of close games against the chargers too last year. division rivalries are always intense games. before 07, our games against our afc east opponents were always VERY challenging games, despite how our defense was and how tom brady was in those years. even last year(eve though without brady) all the games, except the first game against miami, were close ones.

home field advantage does mean something, but i don’t know the raiders record in Arrowhead the last couple of ears or so.

i do believe cassel is better than russel, at the moment. but how cassel will fare against his first year with KC, against a new and improved defense of the raiders is anyones guess.

i’ll stick with my prediction of 24-17 raiders, but i believe this will be a close game.

by patriotguy on Sep 18, 2009 6:40 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

Home field advantage means something

especially in KC! Arrowhead has to be one of the biggest home field advantages in the league. Last year the Raiders dealt with it by destoying the Chiefs with the ground game and they are going to need to do that again this year.

When I think of the Chiefs home field advantage for this game I worry about our starting rookie recievers and our starting right tackle/penalty maker, Cornell Green.

Also I expect the Chiefs to give this one their maximum effort.

Those were pretty much the worst years in Raiders history.

These ARE the worst years in Raider history (and Chiefs). Last time I checked, they’re still 0-1.
Oakland is definitely improving this year and KC isn’t what they’ve been in years past.

Still just one game. They may be improving but they’re a long way from provin that.
Basically what I’m saying is you’re an Arrowhead Pride manager right? It would be great
if you quit living in the past and post some insightful thoughts on what you think this years teams look like.

Read my other posts on here. JaMarcus Russell is a very inaccurate passer, the Chiefs have only stayed in games because of turnovers, the secondary is the bright spot on the team so I think the Chiefs will pick the ball off on multiple occasions putting us in better field position.

This needs to happen because the Chiefs offense is crap. That’s how the Chiefs will win. If the Raiders get the run game going, however, it could be over in a hurry. It still comes down to Russell, though.

24-17 Raider's win.

KC will have enough offense to put up 2 TD’s and one field goal, simply because of the MUCH improved defense of oakland. KC has a good defense, but will have trouble against the run, and zach miller(in my opinion) will have a field day against the chiefs, much like todd heap did last week. which is why i think the raiders will put up twice the score the chiefs will.

The D will hold up as long as they can but if they have to be on the field for 3/4s of the game only bad things will happen. This is Russell’s 3rd year in the pros and he still hasn’t learned to not stare down his receivers and to set his feet before he throws.
Al’s first instinct was right . He was going to trade away the number one pick for another QB from the league until the fans and the press hounded him into over paying for a QB that looks more like an Offensive Tackle.

by DJS52 on Sep 18, 2009 8:18 PM PDT reply actions

Did you see those two blocks Russel put on the Chargers on the Higgins run? It was great.

Anyways, I don’t believe JR will ever developed into a competent QB for the future, however, it’s hard to believe that he will have a rating of 45 again. He’ll improve, but not by much. The best thing to happen for KC and the worst thing to happen for JR is that Schilens is still out. The best thing for the raiders this week is if JR doesn’t turn the ball over. He doesn’t need to put up impressive numbers for us to win games, that’s what D-Mac and Bush are for.

All JR needs to do Sunday is not turn the ball over and complete just the 3rd down and short..

Just HIT somebody.

Nice article

I concur. The Raiders are upset at having the REFS hand them a loss against the bolts. I think this game is pivotal for Raider Nation. If the TEAM ( I think they finally earned the name) is really pissed at the BS they put up with Mon. night now is the time to show it. STATEMENT time. No mercy. Take it to the house and get it done. I believe it’s going to happen! Three division games to start the season, two of which are at home. Statement time. No ref’s are going to deny the Nation the rewards we have coming….for the dues we have paid borthers! Rock on. Kick the chief’s asses !

Raiders win

Stats are stats. They mean everything and nothing. (joel) 4 years ago is a long time to go by. I only see whats right in front of me and whats right behind me. We beat the cheifs there last year and we will beat them there this year. This is just my opinion. The raiders are a better team than the cheifs and have more depth and talent. Croyle… DJS52 I like how you left out russells passing yards, only put in his rating, lame…. Lets face it russell came through in the clutch and did his part, the d lost the game for them at the end. Did croyle do anything to put the cheifs in the lead with under two min to play? didnt think so. If it was not for the cheifs d they would have only scored 10 points last week, not to mention one was a lucky block. Raiders win this match. GO RAIDERS!!!

by SAVAGEMATT on Sep 18, 2009 8:51 PM PDT reply actions   1 recs

Before you declare Russell the next Tom Brady

Remember his best throw was on a totally blown coverage by the Chargers. Take away that one play, and he would have had less than 150 yards passing. He was only 12 of 30. I know your supporting your team, but JaMarcus has a long ways to go before he would even be considered a backup quarterback on any other team. If JaMarcus was an average NFL quarterback, you all would have blown out the Chargers. It wouldn’t have been close! The Raiders have a great running game, but let’s not pretend JaMarcus is ready for prime time.

The Chiefs are a work in process. It is a process. They will probably look horrible for parts of the first half of the season. They may also look unbeatable on occassion. Probably this Sunday, before looking horrendous again.

When is the last time Oakland beat the Chiefs at home?

My prediction is that the Raiders do run for over 200 yards, but the 125 passing yards just won’t be enough to get it done, as the Chiefs win on a strip while JaMarcus gets sacked. It will be a close game. I predict KC 24-OAK 23

Negative Ghost Rider the pattern is full...

by cpa913 on Sep 18, 2009 9:23 PM PDT up reply actions

His best throw may have very well been the one right before the blown coverage

that higgins dropped. that was a thing of beauty. Also remember Russell is working with two starting rookie receivers! and just overall a very young offense. It would be tough for any QB to look good in these circumstances.

Russell will look better when Schillens returns. And look at his numbers from the end of last season. He was solid. In fact the last two games against two teams that needed wins for the playoffs he went 32/46 with 384 yards 4 td’s and 1 pick.

Actually, yeah. We were tied with the Ravens with 2:15 left at 24-24 off of a Croyle TD drive

They are a MUCH better over all team than the Raiders. We are talking about Brodie Croyle here. With Cassel playing, you guys are going to have a looong day. There is no tape on our offense with Cassel in there and you guys will have no idea what it will look like. Your secondary will be winded by halftime.

I am feeling 45-20 Raiders Win

I mean how long has it been since the Raiders have put a 40 burger on the board i cannot remember but, if our Defense plays how they did “without the prevent” it should be immovable. Richard Seymour should give great pressure up the middle and outsides Cheifs QB will throw toward Nnamdi Asomugha I say go ahead he will be ready. With both our passing and rushing ranked 8th in the league is great if we get off on a great start there is no stopping us ask the Broncos what happens when the Raiders get on a roll I’ll tell you 3 TD’s in 18 plays.

Amazing, Jamarcus Russell hands off to McFadden who pitches it back to Russell who finds Darrius Heyward Bey in the Middle of the Field wide open 30, 20,10,5 Touchdown Raiders! Amazing. This telecast is Brought to you by Cable.

Raiders 24 Chiefs 17

One other point about Russell verses the Chargers, was that many times we had only a few receivers in the pass patterns. He only had 2 wideouts and the TE, everyone else was in pass protection, as we did not know how heavy the Chargers pass rush would be. If we know the Chiefs rush won’t be as strong as the Chargers, perhaps we will commit more receivers and give him more targets.
I think that pass catching TEs are one of the strengths of this team (we have 3 good ones) and would love to see more 2 tight end sets, especially with a TE in the slot who could act as the lead blocker instead of a FB on a running play, or run a pass pattern on a pass play. Power football baby it’s what the new Raiders are all about.

Raider Fan,

If history has proven anything it is that the Raiders choke horribly at the end of games vs. the Chiefs. How many times have you been stabbed in the heart by your own team in the last two minutes of these match-ups? Countless.

Can’t you still see images of Art Shell dumbfounded after all those consecutive losses to KC?

It will happen again tomorrow. Your guys will find a way to blow it. They always have, especially in KC.

Prepare yourselves now. Don’t get your hopes dashed again, when JaMarcus throws the ball to a d-lineman with the game on the line.

Regardless of any of your protests that follow, you know perfectly well that my scenario is the most likely. History has proven it.

Best wishes,

this isnt really related to this topic

but does anyone know why sampson satele isnt starting?

by GiantsReignSupreme on Sep 19, 2009 7:53 AM PDT reply actions

Struggling with ZBS calls

Coach Cable indicated that Satele was struggling making the proper zone blocking calls one the line. The center is QB of the OL, and there were times that Satele wouldn’t read the defensive front properly and call a particular blocking scheme correctly.

It’s tough – Morris has been in the scheme for over 2 years now, while Satele has had only a few months to try and figure it out. I don’t think its’ a problem with Satele physically – he’s perfectly suited for ZBS – it’s just been his acclimation to the offense.

Plus, as you may have noticed, Morris is our primary backup at both guard positions, so if anyone goes down Morris moves over and Satele goes back in at center.

Prevent John Marshall from running the prevent defense!

And I really dont care how many times you come on here and try to convince me how the cheifs are going to win, cuz they arent. And for all you russell haters, get off it…. Jevon Walker

I’m hoping this guy is the difference maker this week for the Raiders offense. Starting two rookie WRs, especially in a hostile environment, isn’t the ideal situation. This guy is a 1,000 yard per season receiver when healthy, I’m hoping for at least 50% of offensive plays.

by Oceanside Raider on Sep 19, 2009 10:05 AM PDT reply actions

He's a talent, for sure

But he’s started 12 games in the last two seasons and things like injury usually don’t get better with age (Walker will turn 30 in a couple weeks).

Three of the last four years he’s had less than seven starts so I would argue that’s more indicative of where his career is going than the two seasons in his career where he’s gotten over 1,000 receiving yards.

sorry gotta give it to the raiders

the cheifs barely competed when the raiders were doin terrible last year
now we have a decent roster, we play with intensity like never before, and after last weeks loss the team was devastated. as long as they have anything to say about it, they DONT EVER wanna feel that again. that just means theyll bring even more heat than ever. last year the raiders screwed up big plays n lost one. now we obviously have discipline, consitency, 2 big playmakers on d line, 2 playmaking linebackers, 2 great corners, 2 average if not above average safeties and WAIT A SECOND!!!! THERE ARE TALKS THAT CHRIS MCALLISTER MIGHT SIGN WITH THE RAIDERS? OMFG UR IN TROUBLE…..
as for offense if JRuss can get some consistency goin, he has the weapons there and unless kc blitzes like crazy, he should have all day in the pocket. weapons like miller, murphy, dfad, bush, oneal, and walker. im sorry but the cheifs dont really have too many weapons or even people that should be able to compete…. it all hangs on jamarcus to keep drives alive and make smart throws
