Welcome to Broncos-Raiders Week from MileHighReport
Greetings Raiders fans! Guru here from Mile High Report welcoming you to the start of the 2009 NFL Season and Broncos/Raiders week.
We all know what it means when the Raiders and Broncos go at it. There will also be plenty of talk, back and forth, as we get closer to Sunday. What I am hoping for, in this post at least, is some serious football talk. I don't like the Raiders any more than you guys like the Broncos, and rightfully so.
That said, I have never been one to get into all the smack talk. What I do like is educated football talk amongst fans, all fans! Hopefully we can use this particualr Fan Post for that purpose, and the guys at MHR will do the same when a Fan Post is placed over there.
So, got a Broncos question? Fire away! I'll check back in regularly to get those questions answered! I'd appreciate a REC so that the post can stay at the top for the week!
It's always fun when the Raiders and Broncos get together. Here's to a great week of cross-blogging and to a great game on Sunday!

Here's a question.
How’s Knowshon going to be for this game healthwise? IMO, he’s key for you guys. Absolutely key.
Also, give me an immaculate deflection bail out plan. lol.
ANSWER
He looked a lot better this week than he did last week so he should be good to go. I like Moreno to become more and more involved in the offense, especially the passing game. One thing Moreno has to work on, however, is pass protection on 3rd down. He missed an assignment against the Browns that nearly led to an interception and he needs to improve.

Broncos fans are very excited about KnoMo. However, he really hasn’t shown us much to date. He hasn’t been a huge part of either win this season so I don’t know that I’d call him “key”. Buckhalter has easily been our best RB so far this season. As far as I know KnoMo is 100%.

We might add, though...
Knowshon had a late start this season. He had a brief contract holdout then got a slight injury in pre-season-one. He’s a little behind but getting better every week. Perhaps his breakout game will be in Oakland=) But PosterNutbag is correct; he’s not ‘key’ at this point. We have other options.
I was definitely incorrect on his being 100%…sounds like he’s questionable to even play.

What is going on with Eddie Royal?
He is on my Fantasy Football Team and he has been killing me.
Don't give up on Royal
He’s been drawing a lot of attention, what with Marshall being a no show. But Stokely is killing defenses, and Gaffney is doing well, so Royal will bust out soon.
A man does what he has to do, and sometimes it’s not what I believe he should do. There’s no reason to use up energy hating him for it. Shoot him if you have to, but don’t hate him.
Louis L’Amour
So you are saying I should start him
this week against the Raiders. It would be horrible if I sit him and he has a game like he did last year against us on MNF.
ANSWER
Teams have been forcing the Broncos to go underneath with everything, allowing Royal and Stokley to catch the ball before they tackle him. Something happened to Royal against the Browns, however. He needed an IV at halftime and played little during the 2nd Half. Something to keep an eye on for sure.

What the hell happened to your defense?
And I mean that in a good way. I thought that this year would be a disaster defensively for you guys since you were shifting to a 3-4 with 4-3 personnel. Instead you gave up 7 points to Cincinnati and made Aaron Rodgers into your own personal punching bag. When did Elvis Dumervil get so good? What do you credit it all to?
lol…nice.

"What the hell happened to your defense? "
Mike Nolan happened. He’s doen a great job of bringing in players that fit in his system. I know he wasn’t great as HC for the Niners, but he’s got it rocking on D in Denver.

"When did Elvis Dumervil get so good?"
Doom has always been good, but he’s benefitted greatly by the move to OLB from DE. This way he can use his speed and agility a little more.

Good point
I guess when you are undersized for a 4-3 DE and getting manhandled by a 300 pound left tackle at the point of attack, it’s hard to pile up gaudy stats. It looks like a brilliant move to make him an OLB.
Dumervil
In his first 3 years DOOM had 26 sacks, I’d say that’s pretty gaudy stats. With his 4 sacks last week he has 30 in 3 years + 2 games. He is a pass rushing beast. Watch for him to move over to take on your RT at some point in the game as Nolan will move him around to take advantage of defensive weaknesses.
People can use statistics to prove anything, 87% of all people know that.
*take advantage of offensive line weaknesses.
right? Just trying to help.

To be honest, the personnel the Broncos had match this type of defense much better than the defense the Broncos ran last year. In fact, McDaniels called last years version a “hybrid 4-3” and “gimmicky”. Elvis Dumervil, undersized for a traditional 4-3 DE is thriving in the 3-4 because he can use his speed and tremendous arm reach.
The Broncos are also showing a ton of 5-2 looks in order to stop the run. There is a lot of movement prior to the snap as well.
Lastly, the biggest upgrade is in back. Brian Dawkins can still get it done, and Andre Goodman and Renaldo Hill are huge upgrades around Champ. In other words, the Broncos can allow the Front 7 to get after the ball carrier without worrying that the coverage will break down.
Mike Nolan has been HUGE for the defense as well.

Honestly, I forgot about Nolan
Otherwise I probably wouldn’t have asked the question. He’s a bad head coach, but a genius defensive co-ordinator.
I like Hill as a player, but I don’t know much about Goodman.
Quick background on Goodman:
He started playing for the Lions (probably a big reason most people hadn’t heard of him) in 2002 through 2005, then went to the Miami. With Miami in 06’ he had 0 INTs and 9 passes defenced. He improved in 07’ and had 2 INTs and 4 passes defensed along with 20 tackles. 2008 was an incredible year for him. He tied for 6th in the league for INT’s with 5, had 19 defenced passes, and 39 tackles. More than doubling the production of 2007. He has only had 1 defenced pass so far this year with no INT’s but he is resembling last year’s performance in that 75% of his tackles so far have been solo. He saved a deep touchdown against Cin, helping keep them scoreless until the last minute of week 1’s game.
He isn’t exactely a top 5 CB, but he is very experienced and has proved that he can be productive with the right coachng. I expect him to have another highly servicable year, though he will get picked on contniually opposite Champ.

you were shifting to a 3-4 with 4-3 personnel.
Only one position is the same player as it was last year (Champ Bailey) and only three starters from last year’s defense are starting this year (Williams, Dumervil, Bailey). Williams moved to ILB and Doom moved to OLB.

How have the carries been split up between all of your backs?
Who do you feel should be getting the most carries?
ANSWER
So far it appears McDaniels is giving certain series to certain players and subbing as needed. Correll Buckhalter gets the ball early, with Knowshon next in.
Peyton Hillis was used at the Goal Line on Sunday, and LaMont Jordan seems to be the guy the Broncos want to save for the 4th quarter in order to pound the ball and kill the clock. It has been just one game, but the Broncos were effective in taking the air out of the ball late on Sunday.

After two weeks
what are the feelings on Orton?
Have the Broncos been blitzing much and what has been the base d?
Are there any injury issues heading into this week?
Is Marshall giving his all during games?
Wherever I go, that's where I am.
By base D I meant man or zone, two deep, one deep, etc...
Wherever I go, that's where I am.

ANSWER(s)
Orton — I thought he has done everything asked of him. Think of it this way. Take your index finger of the hand you throw a football with. Dislocate it to the point that the knuckle breaks through the skin. Put it back in place and stitch it up. Place a plastic sheath over the finger, tape it up and put a receivers’ glove on. Now, try and throw a football. That is what Kyle Orton has been dealing with. He looked a lot more comfortable throwing the ball this week, and I expect that to continue to improve. He’s not going to wing the ball all over the place and will take what the defense gives him.
The Defense At times the Broncos have looked like the 3-4 defense employed by the Ravens in the past. At others, it has been more of a hybrid 5-2. There is a ton of pre-snap movement and the Broncos always bring 5 or 6 to the line of scrimmage. It is up to the QB and O-Line to determine who is coming. Sometimes all 6 blitz. At others, the Broncos drop 3 and only rush 3. The name of the game is confusion.
Injuries — The Broncos are actually pretty healthy. Royal is a concern, at least to me, but nothing is really known.
Marshall — That is the Million $$$ question to be sure. Yesterday, Marshall played quite a bit in the 1st quarter until it appeared that he missed a few assignment and ran a couple of bad routes. Marshall disappeared after that playing none of the 2nd quarter. With Royal in the locker room in the 2nd half, Marshall returned and actually made a couple of plays – but also got called for holding bringing back a 40 yard screen pass.
Marshall needs to get his head in the playbook and prove that he deserves the big contract he so desires. Every week I think this is the one, but so far nada. Maybe this week.

If I may be so bold...
It might be worth noting an update, in that Marshall, this week for really the first time, is sounding very positive and saying all the right things. Sounds like he has his mind right and wants to play ball. But as Mr. Bena said above, it’s still the Million $$$ question.
Can your D stop McFadden and Bush?????
Can you stop them???? Going to be hard. No last minute Fluke catches this week. Going to be hard hitting football. Good Luck ! Go RAIDERS
Broncos D held the Bengals to 86 yards on the ground
A 3.2 yard average. Then the Bengals gained 151 on 34 at Green Bay. Broncos D held the Browns to 54 yards on 21 carries. So we’ll see. It will be a game where all players want to make sure their chin straps are secured.

I was really impressed with how the Raiders ran against the Chargers. Then, for some reason they seemed to get away from it in the 2nd Half. Against the Chiefs, it seemed to be a lot of JaMarcus and little of the running game. Josh McDaniels comes from the Belichick tree meaning they will come in trying to make the Raiders win the game some other way, which means to me that Russell will have to be the one.

I thought Shanahan was a great coach, but I understand the criticisms some fans I know pointed out
But a lot of the Bronco fans I know were pretty upset with McD in the offseason. W’s can change that real quick, no matter how you get them. Knew Nolan would bring the fire on D. Definitely one of those hugely talented assistants who didn’t have it as HC, but he might someday.
Sure you guys are happy with the 2-0 start, but are you sold on McDaniels at this point?
or is it too early to say? Have to admit I haven’t really watched Denver yet. Defensive stats are impressive, and Knowshon will be a beast.
ASNWER
“Sold” is an interesting word. I think fans are starting to get what kind of team McD wants to build. Was there a lost of talent at the top of the roster when Cutler departed? Definitely! But between the draft picks, and the Free Acquisitions, the Broncos are a lot better 1-53. That is what this is about. Not star power but depth and talent throughout. I think that is why the Broncos have faded the past couple of years and why I hope they stay strong throughout this season.

or are you guys a team to be feared?

ANSWER
It’s too early to really make a decision on that, not that it matters when these two teams get together. What I have talked about is whether or not Josh McDaniels will understand what this rivalry is all about. Most know that is was personal between Al Davis and Mike Shanahan. That added to what was already a fantastic rivalry. Will McDaniels treat it that way? Will he try to make it another game? Time will tell….

Team to be feared
I hope anyway. But look at the Bengals. Yes, it was a close game with a wild finish, but look what they did at Green Bay the next week. And we dismantled the Browns. Not like dismantling the Giants and Eagles, for sure, but the Broncos are starting to feel the power.

Draft picks
How have Robert Ayres and Knowshon Moreno looked?
McDaniels was criticized for giving up a 2010 1st rounder to move up and grab Alphonso Smith. How’s that decision looking so far?
Is Tom Brandstater a potential QB of the future or a career clipboard holder?
ANSWER
Rookies – Both are still learning, making up time from their brief hold-outs. Moreno is getting more opportunities as a RB, but I believe Ayers will be a factor before it is all said and done. Right now he is coming in with the Nickle and Dime packages to rush the passer. It is the other elements of playing OLB that he needs to work on.
Alphonso Smith — That has been a hot-topic all off-season. That best way to quiet the criticism is to win, making that pick closer to the 2nd half of the 1st round instead of the Top-10. Smith has all the skills and you can tell he is going to be a special player. As you guys know, you can;t keep drafting, and paying, high round picks. The financial risk is too great. The Broncos still have the Bears 1st Round pick in 2010.
Brandstater — I think he showed during the Pre-Season that he could be an interesting prospect, with more seasoning. he looked bad during Camp, and in his first action at Seattle. After Kyle Orton and Chris Simms got hurt, however, some felt he looked better than any QB the Broncos had. He outplayed Kurt Warner in the Pre-Season finale against the Cardinals and showed that the moment wasn’t to big for him. He is someone to keep your eyes on.

Draft Picks
Ayers and Moreno have been disappointments, IMO. Both were hold outs at the start of training camp. Ayres came in sooner than Moreno, but still hasn’t figured out where he’s supposed to be. But he’ll be good – very athletic and talented. Moreno got hurt after he did sign, and was lousy against the Bengals but looked much better against the Browns (75 yards on 17 carries, 2 receptions for 22 yards).
Alphonso Smith looks like someone should have grabbed him in the middle of the first round.
Brandstater looked real good in the 4th pre season game against the Cardinals. Only pre season but he has a strong arm, very good accuracy, and showed very good presence in the pocket. He’s very intelligent (he got a Master’s degree during his 4 years at Fresno). And, after he threw an interception, he absolutley hammered the guy when he tackled him. I love the kid.
A man does what he has to do, and sometimes it’s not what I believe he should do. There’s no reason to use up energy hating him for it. Shoot him if you have to, but don’t hate him.
Louis L’Amour
Sensible Broncos fans...
…realize Brandstater wasn’t even that impressive in the WAC, and Xanders/McDaniels probably just threw a dart at a wall of pictures of the QBs remaining in the draft. He looked okay against the third and fourth string Arizona defenders, but he still couldn’t find the end zone.
Of his apologists, it’s about a 50/50 split between people who just have a fetish for new QBs, and those who assume McDaniels pegged him to be his next Brady/Cassel project.
After the Bears finish 5-11, Colt McCoy might be a target. But Chris Simms is locked up for the next three seasons at a pretty good salary. Orton will probably be re-signed, but if not, look for Simms to take over. He’s still really young, especially in terms of tire tread. Hasn’t played much.
lol, this is the funniest thing I've heard in a while.
Tom B. has looked great in the preseason. Clearly McD found something he liked in this guy because he has all the tools to be a great QB in this league. Once this game slows down a little bit for him and he is more familiar with the offense and reading defenses, Brandstater will be a household name. He makes all the throws accurately with good velocity. He’s tall and won’t get balls tipped at the line and his technique is very good. There’s nothing holding this kid back.
I’d look for Orton to stay if he has a good year. We’ll see him next year unless Brandstater takes over by then. I’d like to see Brandstater in 2011, but if McD thinks he has progressed enough, I’d accept him playing next year.

With all due respect ELGee...
…the Broncos traded up to nab TB. That doesn’t sound like throwing random darts to me. Is he the second coming? I’m not as sold on him already as many MHRers are, but he’s hardly a random stab in the dark. His ‘struggles’ as a four year D1 starter may have something to do with the fact that the OC and scheme changed each year of his FSU career.
IMO, the Broncos fans who see Colt McCoy as a Broncos target in the 2010 draft don’t fully understand what McD values in a QB. I find it even more amusing that the constent rip on Orton is arm strength, yet he has at least the arm McCoy has and probably better.
This is a very complex system with a high learning curve. Unless Kyle Orton completely tanks this year, it would be absolutely counterproductive to replace him just because he isn’t entertaining enough to please the morons that booed repeatedly during a 21 point win. Replacing Orton for absolutely no cause in 2010 is tatamount to a farmer raising corn but killing it once the stalks start coming in. It wouldn’t be sensible at all.

Can Ryan Clady handle Richard Seymour?
Follow up to that: Gerard Warren had one of his most effective games in a long time against KC because Seymour was getting double and even triple teamed at times which allowed him to wreak some havoc in the backfield. Any worries there or can your line handle it better than KC’s did?

so yeah, why so confident? Clady faced a DL from the bengals and an OL from cleveland? But what pro bowl DL has he faced and looked dominating against?
I’m just a seymour fan, so don’t take this question personally please.:)
but i'm sure
that Seymour won’t be going up against Clady exclusively. He’ll be a challenge for sure, but our HC does know him well so… could be a wash.

Forgot about Greg Ellis too
With Seymour and Kelly drawing the left tackle, guard and the center over to deal with them, Ellis (in addition to Warren) was left 1 on 1 and did great things.
ANSWER
That is going to be where the game is won or lost, in my opinion. Both sides. Speaking specifically about the Broncos O-Line against the Raiders D-Line, I like the matchup for the Broncos, but not because I don;t respect what the Raiders have up front, far from it. I have watched Ryan Clady and Ryan Harris at Tackle for 19 games now, and these guys just don;t get beat very often. Clady, starting since Day 1 as a rookie, has given up a 1/2 sack his entire career. Ryan Harris is nearly as good.
At C, the Broncos still have Casey Wiegmann and the Broncos are strong at G with Ben Hamilton and Chris Kuper. I don’t think I am going overboard when I say the O-Line is Top-5 in the NFL, and much better than K.C.’s. If the Broncos are going to win, they have to play like it this Sunday.

Heres my question, but first....
In case you havent been told by my silver and black brothers, im the best there is on silver and black pride. haha. Anyway here we go…
With Jamal Williams gone for the year, LT injured, Philip Rivers losing his temper every 10 seconds, and the 1 and 1 start, can either the raiders or broncos realistically win the division this year over the heavily favored chargers?
And if you haven’t already said it who is the Broncos MVP for the first 2 games of the season?
Im gonna be honest i thought you guys would start off 1 and 2 at best before you guys go on murder’s row of a schedule weeks 4 through 12. I mean listen to this schedule….
Week 4 – Cowboys at Home
Week 5 – Patriots at Home
Week 6 – At Chargers
Week 7 – Bye
Week 8 – At Ravens
Week 9 – Steelers at Home
Week 10 – At Redskins
Week 11 – Chargers at Home
Week 12 – Giants at Home (4 days after the Chargers game)
I feel bad for you guys……ok not really but i wouldn’t want that schedule.
Something to chew on...
After these first couple weeks, do you think New England, San Diego, Dallas or Pittsburgh are the powerhouses they used to be?
Personally, I see Dallas going either way, their defense has some serious holes, and with Ellis going to your Raiders, they lack some serious balls in the pass rush.
New England is also going either way. I know a lot of people are quick to put them at favorites for the SB because Tom Brady’s back, but he hasn’t looked the same—seriously. He put a good drive together in week one to win the game, but in New York this past Sunday, he looked very average.
San Diego is DEFINITELY beatable. Your team made a point of that in week 1 I think. They are always Super Bowl favorites, and they underachieve every year. Thanks a lot to Norv Turner and his crappy play calling.
Baltimore looks good. I mean, REAL good so far. Tough to argue for a win there, but anything can happen on Sunday.
Pittsburgh also looks good this year, but something’s different about them this year…I don’t know if they hit a ceiling last year or what, but something is different with them right now.
Washington thoroughly scares no one. Anyone can beat them, seriously.
The Giants look like a full, solid football team at this point. Eli’s game winning drive against Dallas was very solid all around and he looks to finally be comfortable in his own shoes there in New York. I’m interested in Manningham this year, I’d like to see him develop into good solid receiver. However, down the stretch, I think New York will miss Plax. For that, I say we have a 33% chance of beating them.

I'd like to add to Joe's defense here and note that:
After reading Calijoe’s descriptions of our scheduled teams you should also note the field they are playing on. We’ve got all the powerhouses @ our home field. Baltimore will probably take us out because they’ve got home field advantage and they look amazing this year. Washington is one of the weaker teams up there, and we have them on the road thankfully. Having a heavy home schedule will aid us a lot this year as the AFC West period is facing a tough schedule.
Don’t let the SD predictions fool you either. They’ve got a tough schedule just like the rest of the AFC West, and they just can’t stay healthy. Its only week 2 and they can barely field a competitive line on either side of the ball. Games will be won in the trenches in our division and also with the NFC East. If they can’t get healthy on that line they are going to lose a LOT of games against the NFCE and against us and you guys. KC is looking better than last year, but their line is no exactely dominant.
It's Orange Crush Time!
"And if you haven’t already said it who is the Broncos MVP for the first 2 games of the season?"
I’d have to say Brandon Stokely. Only one catch in game 1 against Cincinnati, but 87 yards and a game winning TD – heads up play by a real football player. 4 catches against the Browns for 70, but they were all key catches (I think they all got a first down). You could argue Correll Buckhalter (17 carries for 122 yards which is a 7.2 average) and a TD.
Elvis Dumerville had the four sacks last week, but in truth, he benefitted greatly from a lot of pressure on the other side.
A man does what he has to do, and sometimes it’s not what I believe he should do. There’s no reason to use up energy hating him for it. Shoot him if you have to, but don’t hate him.
Louis L’Amour
I'd go with Dawk
20 is a man on a mission. He’s our version of Ray Lewis, but with even more left in the tank. He’s everywhere out there. It helps out Champ a ton because he doesn’t have to feel obligated to come down when somebody gets through the first line of defense. He can stay on his man. Though he’ll probably be pretty bored with nobody with covering in Oakland. I guess he can shadow Murphy.
Speaking of the D-Line.. Ronald Fields is worth an MVP mention, as well. Nolan brought him over from San Francisco and he’s been a big time gap-closing hog. Chris Baker (big-time prospect at NT) probably won’t see the field this year.. that’s how good Ronald is playing.
I'll second Weapon X
B Dawk put attitude in the D. They are bringing the phunk this year, so far at least.
Conversation nonstarters: hoping McDaniels fails, comparing Bears to Broncos, Cutler to Orton, apples to oranges, and casual drinkers to Raiders fans.

Wishful thinking
Who knows how injuries will affect the severity of this schedule, but even as it stands now.. it’s nothing to lose any sleep over.
Cowboys have the worst defense in the NFL. That might be Moreno’s coming out party.
Patriots suck and Invesco. Brady is tentative and the offense as a whole is lost without Josh.
Chargers are without their most important defender and the Broncos run-D is improved tenfold.
The Ravens look great but Harbaugh instilled an added emphasis on offense. The defense has holes. Reed is banged up, Suggs is out of shape and Lewis is old.
Steelers here will be a great game. There will be even more bandwagon Steelers fans in the stands now that so many gomers are doubting the new regime. It was already 70/30 even when the Broncos were dominant. That defense isn’t nearly as aggressive without Polamalu, and their receivers aren’t great. Letting Washington go was dumb.
Redskins just beat the Rams by 2 at home. Next.
Giants might go 16-0 this year. Not much we can do about that. Will be a fun game to attend.
5-3 during that stretch is doable, if not expected. 8-3 after week 12.
about the pats
the pats aren’t lost because of josh mcdaniels, brady just hasn’t got it together yet, the WR weren’t doing great at seperating from CBs, and revis was doing great against moss one on one. mcdaniels wasn’t a factor.
u play
all thouse teams exept ne in a diff order this is not high school or college we den will win 4 of those games
okay i have cereal palsy arhrtis and chronic fatiue as well i have a grea life loveing folks some days are better that other days i got a make a wish in 2001 saw my favorive team the broncos was the trip of the lifetime i wish everyone couild gotten to enjoy that with me i know some of u hate the broncos and that ok but i bleed organ and bule
if marshal plays
i think you guys wight have a chance to beat the giants. but that’s just me.
You guys have to play all of those teams as well
Minus the Pats that is.
People can use statistics to prove anything, 87% of all people know that.
Nice post John, rec'd
Here’s my prediction for this week:
Breakout game for Knowshon-135 yards on 18 carries and his first NFL Touchdown
Comeback game for Brandon Marshall-90 yards on 5 catches and a Touchdown
BRONCOS: 34
RAIDERS: 13
Vinny Gambino: "Ms. Devito, Can you tell the court what this is a picture of?"
Ms. Devito: "You know what it's of"
I don't think it will be that big of a lead but
it will be a close game for sure.
Too bad Knowshon Moreno tweaked his groin in practice..........................................
Verbose in style, dispersion of thought, procrastination in life.
Great post John!
Very respectful dialogue on both sides. Very classy fans – and I hate that I just complimented the enemy=)
And Rec’d
One quick question for the Raiders fans if I may..
Is the Black Hole what it used to be? Do you expect a truly energized crowd?
i was there for OAK/SD
it’s always crazy hyphy for any opening game let alone on monday night against a west rival. I was there las year for OAK/DEN monday night. nothing gets the OAKTOWN more of the chain than OAK/DEN, cept maybe OAK/KC
I went out for the home opener last year to Oak.
I was all the way up in the nosebleeds and the crowd was pretty wild. They quieted down after the 30+ point lead most of the game. The raiders will bring the noise, but if Denver can get on the board early and establish any kind of a running game then it’s going to be a rough night for J-Russ.
It's Orange Crush Time!
