Tired of the JaMarcus bashing
This from SI.Com:
"He is possibly the worst overall first pick in league history."
For the record, through his first 16 games he had the third highest passer rating for any QB taken first overall--and it wasn't like he was in a great situation.
For the record, Alex Smith was also drafted first. As was Tim Couch. As was David Carr. As was Ki-Jana Carter. As was Jeff George. As was Aundray Bruce. Of those players, he will certainly be better than all but Jeff George, and he will very likely be better than him.
For the record Jim Plunkett was drafted 1st by the New England Patriots in 1971. After playing there and for the 49ers, he came to the Raiders when no one else wanted him in the late '70s. When an injury forced Plunkett into the starting line-up for a 2-3 Raider team going nowhere in 1980, he led them to the Super Bowl, where he was the MVP. He won the Super Bowl again in 1983, and his Raider-led teams were consistently in the playoffs.
Nine years after being taken first overall, Plunkett flourished. But after one season and two games of starting the jury is already in on the broadly perceived to be dumb, lazy, fat, physically gifted, fur-wearing black guy from the South who the Raiders drafted.
JaMarcus's passer rating for his last 7 games of 2008:
88.4
149.1
51.5
42.0
85.7
128.1
98.9
Average Rating: 91. 9
It's ridiculous to say that he's the worst pick ever. The guy has had two shitty games to open this season. He's playing with two rookie receivers and his favorite receiver is out. He's led two touchdown drives in the final three minutes to put his team ahead. But the perception is that in every game he has ever played he has been absolutely awful.
Why is that?
Look, I'm not sure how JaMarcus Russell will turn out. I hope he returns to end-of-last-season form today against the Broncos.
But the excessive criticism of the guy has gone so far off the rails on a national level that it's become completely unbelievable. It's hard not to think it has a little to do with race and a little to do with an "anything the Raiders do has to be a disaster" mentality.

Race really? Now we're picking on a QB
that has put up horrible numbers and his own coach has stated he’s not as far as he’d like him to be, and we’re gonna base this on race? Ran out of stats to defend him and tired of using the receivers are rookies defense? Now you’re going to defend him by calling everyone a racist?

No Bronco Fan
Black quarterbacks get pick on first because the Football Gods and ESPN think their not smart or maybe there last name isn’t Montana, Aikman, ahhh Marino or maybe Brady… Farve need i say more. Now tell me would you yank them after their first 18 games?

Did you just call me a Bronco fan?
I don’t think Russell is ready to start. He did better @ the end of last season. If you regress, then yes I would yank you out. It helped for Huff when that message got sent, didn’t it? Now Huff’s working w/ Asmo all the time to get better, and that paid off.

I don't think his time is up
I think he needs to be benched and a message needs to be sent to him that his job ain’t safe and pick it up.

Its not a black thing its a production thing.
This is not a black issue its a production issue. JMarc’s first 18 games has redefiened the term mediocre, it has set new standards in NFL history for ineptitude, lack of poise, lack of dedication, laziness, misguided pride, and fundimental mechanical flaws. As to the above mentioned white QB’s in Brady’s first 18 starts he had won a superbowl, Marino was in his second season where he would shatter all records, Farve had immediatly made the Packers competitive after years in the wilderness, Montana was showing the poise for which he became a legend, and Aikman after admittedly recovering from a difficult first year was kick starting the Cowboys towards an era of dominance. So I do not believe it is a colour issue.

Hey, buddy!
Don’t come in here using logic for your argument! Who do you think you are? You make great points, but my point is “he has had two bad games so bench him now.” You don’t agree so I’m going to post in your thread 6 times to make sure everyone reads MY opinion over and over again, even though you’ve backed your opinion up with legitimate history and stats!

Next year’s draft…Tebow, Bradford, McCoy, etc.

My post is pretty embarrassing after today's game
But my point remains the same: Why is this guy so universally vilified. And I’m talking about before this season.
You have to hand it to the critics, though. JaMarcus is pretty much proving them correct over the first three weeks. I understand the idea of benching him to send a message. I just don’t think it’s what needs to be done. We’re going to have to ride this one out.
by RLangford on Sep 27, 2009 5:09 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Ride it out to what?
The end of his contract? That’s in 2 MORE years. I’d like to see Oakland win before then.
You better support Russell though. Don’t want you turning into racist like you think I and all the other ppl that wanna bench JR are.

You're tired of JaMarcus Russell bashing
well I’m tired of JaMarcus Russell playing.

I'll say it again...BUST
I don’t like the bashing but I keep hearing the same thing over and over and that is the phrase, “JaMarcus is going to develop, he just needs a little more time”, well its his 3rd season and second as a starter and he isn’t getting better, he’s getting worse and what is really bad is that we aren’t playing top tier teams right now, the Garcia cut was to keep fans from wanting him to play so we basically have no real backup QB that could win but they probably can do a little better, certainly not worse. Play him the rest of the year and release him in the off season then look to draft another QB and possibly get a decent vetern for a mentor and back up.

Well R Langford?
What do you think of JRuss now? I’ve been watching this team for 42 years and this was one of the worst games I’ve ever seen. If Paul Hackett can’t teach this kid the fundamentals and have it sink in NOBODY will! The sad thing is that what does Raider Nation get if they do bench the guy? Gradkowski or Frye? $hit, Garcia was the closest thing to a real pro QB we have had since Gannon and he’s with the Eagles. No folks, we are in some deep $ hit here at the QB position and it’s not getting better soon. YIKES!!!

You guys are WAY to harsh on Jmark!!! This is only his 3rd"real" game since it's his
first year as an NFL QB! Cut him some slack, you phuckin haters!!! He’s a Raider so we must love him!!! You’re all a bunch of haters!!! Beotches!!!!
by Bacon on Sep 27, 2009 9:03 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
this is not at all accurate, Bacon. These are great fans that have every reason to be upset with Jarmarcus' continued ineptitude
Any other team would bench any qb playing nearly as poorly as he is. We’re not saying fire him, we’re just sayinng we want to see some improvement from him.
Not his first year as an NFL qb, but granted it’s only about 8 games with the current squad and coaches. The starting receivers are both rookies and not doing much better, but for a lot of reasons, Jamarcus playing as he is will not work out if we continue down this road.
None of these critics can really be called haters. These are loyal fans expecting a committment to excellence mean just that. Not a commitment to losing games, over and over again, and being content with it.

Face Reality
Kenny Stabler has said the game doesn’t come easy for JaMarcus. Coach Cable hints that he needs to live and breathe football. JaMarcus doesn’t have “it.” Unfortunately, we have to sit through an at best 5-11 season for Al Davis to realize he drafted a LOSER! It stinks to have to swallow a 7th straight losing season to pray for this kid to develop!

JaMarcus is a bust
cmon man he cant even make a freakin 2 yard dump off to his tailback much less an 8 yard pass to a receiver. He has no confidence in himself or the receivers, not to mention one of the best tight ends in the game Zack Miller. What happened to him running the ball,he’s so fuckin scared to run the ball so he throws it outta bounds. How many games is it gonna take for him to play the way he is before one if his lineman miss a block on purpose to take a clean shot at JaMarcus and get him hurt.( HOPEFULLY NEXT WEEK I HOPE). Until he proves he can play as an NFL QB he needs to be benched.

Have you just come out of a coma recently?
Hey Bacon, where have you been? This is “Jmarks” 3rd year and his 2nd as a starter!!!!!! He has only himself to blame for the bashing, when he tells the media that he is happy with his progression and places blame on everything away from himself then he deserves what he gets, 60+ million and his performance warrant the bashing. Any QB who is happy with a rating of 22.9 needs to be not only benched but cut…Plain and simple!!
