JaMarcus Defense

He's been awful. I know that. He doesn't inspire confidence with anything he says. I realize that, too. He's regressing. I get that, too.

But what I want to ask is this: Haven't fans seen anything (last year or at times in pre-season) that gives you any confidence? Versus Miami, Denver, Houston, and Tampa Bay, Russell was very good last year. That's four of the final seven games. And against New England he also had a strong statistical game, but that was a blowout, so let's ignore it. I'm asking why those games seem to mean nothing. Why do the previous three games (which included two potentially late game-winning drives and one TD stolen by the refs/rules) weigh so heavily against him?

This overwhelming disgust with the guy has to go beyond just his in-game performance because, as I pointed out, he had some real success last year. So what is it that makes fans so certain that this guy is such a complete bust?

I'm asking this honestly of the hardcore fans--of which I'm one--who read and respond here.

JaMarcus Russell

Russell played pretty well down the stretch last season, yeah, but he has completed 41 percent of his passes in three games so far. We’re also 1-2 in those games and being 1-2 doesn’t look quite as good as 2-1 does.

Also, the referees didn’t cost us that game against the Chargers. Playing that prevent defense on the final drive cost us that game against the Chargers.

i admit the

prevent d killed the game for us.
ive said that terrible call is synonymous to the ed hochule call last season…
but i also said if the chargers d was so great they would have stopped the following touchdown OR at least the 2 pt conversion
but now i know how they feel and yea it sucks having the game go the other way because of a blown call

You sound like a 49ers back in the day talking about Alex Smith. Smith also had a couple of good games, but that doesn’t neglect the bad ones he had. The same thing goes for Russell.

but i digress

j russ is the face of the franchise, hes the qb. if the colts lose and peyton has a less than record breaking game, its his fault. pats loss to NYJ, brady took the blame. when we lose, j r takes the blame. just so happens hes takin alot of blame cuz we dont seem to win alot. thats all it is. thats a responsibility of the qb.
like i said when u look at a game n why the team lost
a main question is “how did the qb play?”
its just in the job description and j russ just needs to focus, try harder, n turn his attention to proving us all wrong

In a recent interview he said

the last 2 picks should have been called pass interference. That’s called making an excuse, not taking the blame. I have yet to see where Russell takes the blame on himself for a loss. That would at least show some caring.

No doubt he needs to accept blame

even if it is not his fault. I don’t want to hear him say the refs blew it, or the WR’s weren’t where they were supposed to be etc.

I want to hear him say I am going to get better. I am going to bust my ass every day to get better. I want the WR’s and I to move into together. I’ll spend every moment throwing things to them while they run around. All day it will be, here catch these dirty dishes on a medium slant route to the kitchen. Catch your toothbrush on a deep curl to the bathroom. Fly pattern to the bedroom and I’ll drill you with the condoms between the railings of the stairs.

All that being said his first INT was a nice throw. It would have hit DHB in stride had he not fallen over! He did make some nice throws on Sunday and I thought looked much better than he did against the Chiefs.

I am excited for Chaz to get back and I pray to god it helps this offense because it is hard to feel good about it at this point.

Wherever I go, that's where I am.

Not the face of the franchise

being the face of the franchise is earned and goes to the fan favourate playing at the highest level, which would be Nnamdi. Who also is appearing in national commercials. Do you think Ryan Leaf was the face of the frachise when he was with the Chargers? Nope it was Junior Seau.

Face of the Franchise

The face of our franchise is clearly Nnamdi Asomugha.

One way or the other Jamarcus is the current face of the franchise....

The current product that is the Raiders is an abysmal team that has failed miserably to reach its potential…. The face of the franchise is someone who embodies that current product and, subsequently, weighs most heavily on the outcome which that product can achieve.

Nnamdi is a symbol of what we want to become and the players we want to have; an ultra-talented player who, by all accounts, lacks the type of ego and complacency which is sometimes prevalent in players of similar talent and stature…

But unfortunately, his performance, alone, cannot impact the outcome of a game- or this season- to the extent that we win or lose based on what he does. Against Denver, for example, if he had completely shutdown say B. Marshall (I know he was rarely matched up against him, but for hypothetical purposes) to zero catches and picked off Orton twice it still wouldn’t negate the fact that we got gashed in the run game and our offense was inept and only produce 3 points. You say well it would have contributed to field position- well look at what happened when we recovered a Buckhalter fumble inside their 20… we gave it right back…

Unfortunately, a strong performance by Jamarcus could have had a much stronger impact on putting us in a position to win the game. We go as he goes. Our team and this franchise develops has he develops. That is why he is the face of our franchise and will continue to be until he leaves the Raiders.

At the moment, this is a scary proposition as it seems that he will flounder and therefore stand as the face of a franchise that cannot right the ship. But this entire season, good or bad, has to play out with Jamarcus under center because it’s not going to get any better with someone else (like Gradkowski) under the helm and he is, undoubtedly, the only one who can make it a good one.

hmmmmm i agree

nnamdi is most definitely the spokeperson and clearly a leader of the team
but at the same time nnamdi’s play, due to his position, doesnt necessarily effect the outcome of the game the way j-russ’s play does
am i right?
thats why when he does bad, the team suffers big time. thats why the qb takes the blame

I definately think JaMarcus can turn it around

and have been pretty vocal about that but he is really tough to watch at the moment and we have a pretty rough schedule coming up. Even the most ardent Russell supporter and I would consider myself a Russell supporter would say that running him out when he is playing this poorly is not really helping him or the team and cant go on much longer.

I don't know, Oz

Having a bad first game like Cutler did and then rebounding into playing great the next two games, would have been one thing. But you said it, yourself. A very rough schedule coming up after Houston. If he didn’t rebound against a lousy team like KC, what’s going to happen when he goes up against the Giants or the Jets? Out of their next 4 opponents, two of them are 3-0. They don’t get an “easy” game again until they play KC again. Then after that it’s Dallas, Pittsburgh…it ain’t pretty. We could be looking at some college-style blowouts here if they keep playing the way they are.

But also you have to consider that Leftwich and Brady Quinn got benched after their first 3 games, and their stats were no worse than Russell’s.

by rightnasty on Sep 30, 2009 6:57 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Play through his slump or sit and watch for a while?

I was in favour of JR playing against Denver after his last minute heroics against KC. But each week he seems to play worse than the week before. Which means he’s on target to get about 20 yards of passing this week.
Being benched is n’t a death blow, he can always play again at a future time. They can even try rotating quarterbacks and see who gets hot. But at the moment the feeling is the rest of the team could be competitive if the QB position play was even remotely average.
How about a poll? Bench JR Start Gradkowski, Bench JR Start Frye, Wait until game #8, Rotate Quarterbacks during game, Trade for a free agent,

As a Raiders fan in Seattle

I can confidently tell you that Charlie Frye should not be an option in this poll.

Here Defend this:

From this article:

After the Bronco game some tailgaters, who were parked by the road where the players come and go, and this was what they saw:

“Our tailgate happens next to the road the players drive in and out of the stadium. after the dismal game some of the boys went back to do a bit more tailgating and eat…a white Rolls Royce is leaving the stadium with JaMarcus Russell driving…fans know this and are booing…the passenger side window rolls down and with JaMarcus driving one of his home boys on the passenger side yells out “Well at least we are eating good, you guys are still broke”…and JaMarcus visibly chuckles in the driver’s seat…"

it's not just his on-the-field awfulness this year

but that he isn’t working with his receivers after practice, not watching film, really not showing any commitment to getting any better. He obviously doesn’t care.

also

his stats from last year don’t mean squat towards his terribleness this year.

This guy is full of flaws

JaMarcus has more flaws than the obvious terrible play on the field. It breaks down to pure mentality, he does not possess the mental fortitude, and drive to become a leader of this team. He is the last to come to practice and the first to leave, he has come to training camps over weight, he has had two and half years to learn the playbook and they still just use half of it becuase of his progression. Hell they don’t even audible when there is 8 in the box, and when he pretends by waving his arms and calling dummy audibles the defence luaghs and stuffs the run. The only thing this guy is going to succeed in is more interceptions, more poor work ethics, more excuses, and more losses for the Raider Nation. I am not sure f everyone here has checked but we play some defensivley dominating teams that will eat him alive. It needs to be corrected now, and it starts with sitting him down and giving someone else a shot, some else who will put the work in, and make this team the team we all know it is capable of being.

because we've had the same oc

for his entire tenure here. In fact, same head coach, same receivers, same everything. Consistency, that’s what we’re known for right now…right?

Come on. Be honest. 2 years to learn “the” playbook? This isn’t Madden, where you have OAK playbook to learn and it’s the same every year.

We're not questioning

his plays or play calling. It’s mostly his fundamentals and decision making which has regresssed instead of progressed.

As an LSU fan

I know he can look great one game and lost the next. He has the strongest arm in the NFL, but should have been improving his accuracy every year. Seems like it is very hard to find a QB with strong arm and head on straight. Matt Schaub and Pennington have weak arms but can read defenses, and Russell can throw it anywhere on the field but can’t find the openings in the defense.

If carrots got you drunk, rabbits would be fucked up.
