Oakland Raiders Gameday Preview

Preseason Game 4
Oakland Raiders at Seattle Seahawks
Where: Qwest Field, Seattle, WA
When: 7 p.m. PDT
Records Preseason: Seattle 3-0, Oakland 1-2
Television: NFL Network; KTVU
What's at stake: It's the final preseason game and normally in the 4th game of the preseason the starters play very little if at all. However, after last weeks shellacking at the hands of the Saints, Coach Cable has indicated that his starters will at least play a few series if not more. What I like, according to Cable, is the fact that it's the players themselves that want to play to try to vindicate themselves and get the bad taste out of their mouth following the last game. Also at stake will be the employment for 22 players currently on the roster as the final cuts are coming this Saturday the 5th. Cable has indicated that only about 40 roster spots are secure, which means that 13 spots are up for grabs.
What to look for: First, any kind of improvement and rebound form last week. I know that I would like to see some hustle and preparedness from the starters.
Next will be all of the remaining position battles:
- No. 3 Quarterback: Gradkowski and Frye will get the most playing time and the decision on which one to keep will come down to the wire.
- Running Backs: Rankin, G. Russell, Lawton and Reece are all vying for 2 roster spots.
- Wide receiver: Watkins, Holland and Nick Miller will battle it out for the final spot on the 53 man roster. I give the edge to Nick Miller now because of his return skill and the fact that incumbent kick returner Justin Miller has the dreaded turf toe.
- Tight Ends: If the Raiders indeed keep 3 TE's, then Tony Stewart and Darrell Strong will fight for the remaining opening.
- Offensive Line: T-G Mark Wilson, T Seth Wand, T James Marten, C John Wade are all on the bubble. Apparently the decision on the starting center has not been made yet and Satele, Morris and Wade trying to prove themselves in this game.
- Defensive Line: Incredibly, Desmond Bryant has probably played himself right on to the 53 man roster. The same cannot be said for DT William Joseph, DT Terdell Sands, DE-DT Ryan Boschetti, DE Greyson Gunheim. Those 4 will battle it out for probably 3 spots. Expect to say bye-bye to Sands and for the Raiders to be combing the waiver wire Saturday night.
- Linebackers: Morrison, Howard, Brown, Alston, Slade Norris and Ekejiuba are all in. OLB Nixon, OLB Greenwood, OLB Sam Williams and MLB Chris O’Neill will compete for maybe one spot on the 53 or on the practice squad.
- Defensive Backs: Lots of battles here, at least for the backup positions. Mike Mitchell's hamstring probably secured Huff's roster spot, but for the rest, Baker, Bowie, Hawkins, Darrick Brown and Jerome Boyd will play for maybe three final spots.
Who won't play: C John Wade (knee), OT Khalif Barnes (ankle), LB Kirk Morrison (elbow), S Mike Mitchell (hamstring), CB Nnamdi Asomugha (wrist), S Rashad Baker (concussion), WR Chaz Schilens (foot), RB, Justin Fargas (hamstring), LB Isaiah Ekejuiuba (shoulder)
Questionable: Louis Murphy (foot), CB/KB Justin Miller (toe).
Enjoy the game Nation! Let's get the Saints game far in the rear view mirror and show that we are ready for the Chargers. Go RAIDERS!!!

Pre-game predictions
I think the team as a whole will bounce back. The Saints may be the better team, but not as much as last week seemed to show. I think, or at least hope, it was just one of those things that happens.
Might as well make some early guesses as to who stays and who goes:
No. 3 QB: It’s a coin flip at this point and it’s pretty much gonna come down to who plays best tonight. I think if the issue had to be decided before the game, it would be Gradkowski that stays and Frye that goes.
Backfield: Reece is a virtual lock because of his skill at catching passes out of the backfield and I really think Lawton has done nothing to show he should stay on the roster. As good as Rankin has shown himself, I think Russell will stay because he can play both fullback and running back.
WR: I had thought that Miller would be cut and hopefully snuck onto the practice squad, but now I think he’s in barring a spectacular game by Watkins or Holland.
TE: Unless Stewart has an awful game or rips his knee ligaments to shreds, I don’t see how he gets cut.
OL: Tough call here. Wilson might have an edge because of versatility. I think Wade is in big, big trouble because of age and injury and the fact that Chris Morris seems perfectly capable.
DL: Boschetti is as good as gone. Sands (FINALLY!) is not much better off. Joseph is in the clear to make the team, barring injury or a spectacularly bad performance. I think Gunheim will go too and the Raiders will pick up a 5th DT from another team. With Bryant’s ability to play end as well as tackle, they can easily afford to only carry 4 DE’s. Although if Sands is kept as 5th tackle, I wouldn’t be surprised. He always seems to dodge the axe.
LB: If any of those guys stay, it’ll probably be Greenwood. Truthfully, though, I think all are toast. Wouldn’t mind seeing David Nixon signed to the practice squad if he clears waivers.
DB: I don’t even know. Very fluid situation, that’s for sure.
Hey Rabin, Welcome Back:
I promoted your story the other day and if you look at the Raider team page on Yahoo! you will see your post highlighted in the Raider Blogs Category.
But when they start scheming us the way these guys did, and we weren't particularly ready for it, anything can happen."

Our starters need to look like starters during the series they play
in, it is important for our starters to build confidence. Last week was a mess, and we need to see a team that plays like it is suppose to win the game. At least to gain some momemtum going into the season, its not about winning the game its about our starters playing well.

The Starters have to play!!!!
I don’t know about you guys but I think the first teamers… minus or running backs have to play. We have some serious durability issues at RB, besides Bush, they are all brittle. I cringe everytime I watch D-Fad and Huggie Bear run, hoping they don’t get injured. I remember seeing Bo Jackson go down in that playoff game against the Bengals. A single tear fell from my eye, followed by many more during the Buffalo game the following week… (I digressed).
I’m hoping to see a more solid and balanced game plan! We will only be effective in the passing game if we threaten with the run. We gotta take some pressure off JRock. He’s got a cannon but he lacks leadership, I don’t think his personality will ever transcend him to that great field general we need (Rich Gannon is the last one I can think of).
The Defense… well I’m just at a loss of words for that. I wonder how many games I will have to sit through this season where they loose it in the 4th quarter. I can’t wait to get Mitchell on the field and I don’t know about ya’ll but Routt is one of the worst corners in the league. Offensive coordinators/Quarterbacks are gonna be gunning for that dude when he gets on the field. Anybody know why we let Manning Jr. go? was he injured? I’m at a loss… Can we fire Sands? What is going on? I think until Mitch gets healthy we start Branch and Huff, I think Huff had his wake up call, he’s hungry! Let em play!
What is everyone smoking...?
Jamarcus and the starters should play at least a half. With what’s widely viewed as the worst starting QB in the league leading your team why would he play two or three series and sit? What is anyone going to learn watching the ad libbing Jeff Garcia direct the offense?
I suppose you need to establish the depth chart and figure out which 22 or so to cut, but after completely skipping Game 3, should the starters be rewarded by getting a pass the next week?
Nope
The Raiders may be able to shake off a bad preseason game, but they won’t be able to shake off any injuries between tonight and Opening Night. Playing the starters for an extended period of time is far too risky, even if last week’s game didn’t go according to plan or hopes. We can only hope nothing bad happens in those first two drives.
Slade Norris destroyed the periodic table, because he only recognizes the element of surprise.

Of course, the Raiders and A’s are both playing at the same time and the college football opening game is also on at the same time.

Yes the starters need redmption.....just not TOO much!
I see no harm in letting the starters play a few series. Watching last weeks debacle they could use some more work on timing and making sure everyone is on the same page and doing what they are supposed to be doing against a starting defense. I was down big time after last weeks game. In 42 years of being a fan I’ve never seen a worse preseason performance by the Raiders. That’s why I feel the starters need a little chance at redemption……..just not too much. CAN"T WAIT FOR THE 14th! Oakland 27 San Diego 17
Show and Tell
I am hoping, more than being convinced that we are ready for prime-time. Until we get another true defensive lineman, and/or, adapt-and-use a scheme to cause stoppage and pressure upon the quarterback, we are operating in a vacuum. Also, Kelly’s discipline and Mr. Davis’ control issues (each, at the wrong time) are still of grave concern! This team’s mantra seems to lie with a good performance of the defense, (albeit in the past they have been on the field too long). Showing ‘heart’ in tackling from the defense ignites both the fans and the offense more than vice versa. …Raiders, Go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(Kick As!)
No Hunger!
Too much smiling on the sidelines while we are being out-classed on the field. ’What’s-up’ with that crap! Winners are never content until the opponent is screaming for mercy at the end! (Whether it is preseason or on the playground.) …i.e., How does so many professionals get faked-out on simple ‘moves’ at this level is ‘head scratching?’ … And that is just some of what is obvious on the defensive side. It may be best not to say “Oakland” Raiders as much, as of late, anymore because these ‘pantsies’ do not represent what the Bay is ‘all-about’ in football lore.
