NFL Roster Cutdown Day: Open Thread

"Coach Wants to See You...And Bring Your Playbook"

Twenty-two players per team and 704 overall will get that call by 3:00 p.m. Pacific today, thus for the moment ending their employment in the NFL.

The Raiders and the rest of the 31 other NFL teams face their most critical roster decisions of the year this weekend. There will be a lot of hyper-activity this weekend as roster movements around the NFL will include waiver wire claims, trades and practice-squad additions. But the decisions that will shape each team's roster, and subsequently, their season, are now in the process of being made.

So rather than having multiple of fanposts that talk about today's NFL roster movements, we will use this thread for all discussion on not just the Raiders roster moves, but the rest of the NFL as well. Especially since the Raiders are expected to be active this weekend in finalizing their 53 man roster and hope to find a defensive tackle, a decent backup corner and a starting right tackle either by trade or waiver claim.

As you find links and other info about the NFL and Raiders roster activity, post them below.  I'll do my best to keep this post updated with the news as it comes in.

On a final note: Tom Cable is expected to hold a press conference at 4:00 p.m. today after all of the roster moves are in.

I heard that last night on espn but why trade for him if he might get cut i know we need to replace cornell green but we get khalif barnes back in a couple weeks. i think we should trade for a DT first it a must we need a up grade over sands and joseph. also we need another safety and a couple of corners because miller and routt are horrible corners there fast but they cant play their always getting beat and flaged.

David White guesses at the 53-man roster.

Final roster cuts are due Saturday afternoon, which means the Raiders will drop 22 players to get to the 53-man roster for the regular season.

Raiders coach Tom Cable said he’s already figured out 42 to 44 of the players he will keep. Here’s my educated guess at who the Raiders will keep and who they won’t, based on practice observations, game performances, salaries, coach’s comments, team history and flat-out hunches.

Cleveland Browns running back Jamal Lewis isn’t a lock to last through this weekend’s cuts.

A number of media outlets — including ESPN, the National Football Post and the Cleveland Plain Dealer — have speculated that Lewis could be cut.

“Nobody has told us anything about Jamal,” agent Mitch Frankel told the Plain Dealer. “We’ve had no conversations with the Browns about him and no one has told Jamal anything.”

This isn’t a roster cut, but it frees up roster space for one team.

The Detroit Lions have acquired safety Ko Simpson
from the Buffalo Bills.

Detroit reportedly sent an undisclosed 2010 draft pick to Buffalo in exchange for Simpson.

“He’s multidimensional. He’s got the size we want. He’s got good range, can also tackle. He’s also been a pretty good contributor on special teams,” Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said of Simpson.

The former Purdue star caught 15 passes last season for the Lions, but never pushed his way up the depth chart this preseason. It didn’t help that the Lions drafted Derrick Williams and traded for Dennis Northcutt.

The Atlanta Falcons released quarterback D.J. Shockley.

Shockley was outplayed by rookie John Parker Wilson this preseason. He is still eligible to be on the Falcons’ practice squad, but he will likely try to land a gig on another 53-man roster.

The Green Bay Packers released running back Kregg Lumpkin.

Rookie Tyrell Sutton’s big preseason was the death blow for Lumpkin. This also is good news for DeShawn Wynn. Brandon Jackson (ankle) is questionable for the first game, so it remains to be seen how Ryan Grant’s backup situation will shake out.

Packers Release OL Jamon Meredith

KFFL, via the Green Bay Press-Gazette, is reporting that the Packers released 5th round pick OL Jamon Meredith. Meredith was a versatile ZBS lineman for the South Carolina Gamecocks, and was someone many on this site had targeted for the Raiders in this year’s draft. Perhaps the Raiders will take a look at him as upgrade for a backup OL position, or even perhaps push Cornell Green at RT.

I've never been a Jeff Garcia Fan, but

I respect him as a player and a competitor, and cannot say the same for JaMarcus Russell. If this is true, the Raiders capped another lousy offseason by getting rid of a player who might actually be able to win games (what a concept).

"If you don't take out his battery, he's going to keep going all day."

by S Jay Bruin on Sep 5, 2009 3:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Fine By Me

Garcia didn’t show me anything this preseason that led me to believe he could manage the offense any better than Gradkowski or Frye. Whereas Russell has shown more poise in the pocket this preseason, Garcia was running around immediately, but wasn’t all that effective on the move. I’ll agree with S Jay Bruin that you have to like Garcia’s fire and competitive spirit, but that alone isn’t going to do it.

I'm fine with this. Jerry McDonald had a great comment

“The brutal truth? Garcia had zero chance to start despite national perception, and he may not be better than Gradkowski, Frye”

Look for a lot of ignorant people to say this was a bad move. I don’t necessarily think it was based on Garcia’s performance in games. The Raiders are putting all their eggs into JaMarcus Russell’s basket though, and that’s probably the right thing to do. Getting rid of Garcia saves them some money too.

Plus, Garcia had shown zero desire to teach J-Russ anything. Instead he had just gone on and on about getting the starting job. Eff that, sez I.

Eagles Waive CB Jack Ikegwuonu

We all know how much Al Davis loves to collect first round talent. Ikegwuonu was slated to be a first round pick out of Wisconsin in 2008, but slipped to the 4th round because of an ACL injury. Sounds a bit like Michael Bush. I have to imagine that Ikegwuonu would be an upgrade over our current 4th or 5th CBs, even though I though Bowie played alright against Seattle on Thursday.

Plenty of Roster Tweaking Still To Do

Look at the positional breakdown right now:
QB – 3
TE – 3
RB – 4
FB – 2
WR – 7
OL – 9
DL – 8
LB – 6
DB – 8

The Raiders need to dump a RB (Fargas?) and a WR (Watkins?) and pick up a CB and either a LB or DL. Raiders could also look to upgrade the OL, as neither McQuistan nor Pears seemed to impress Cable this preseason.

DL For Sure

The Raiders do not have a true nose tackle on the roster. Even if William Joseph played well this preseason, I would hope the Raiders would replace him with an actual nose tackle who can engage multiple defenders, or alternatively decide to keep 9 DL on the roster. If the defense is going to be out on the field longer than the offense it would make sense to have more guys on the squad to keep them fresh.

…side note: I had High hopes for T. Scott coming into the preseason, but he’s let me down.

Garcia is gone, no more pressure for JAMAR, just like he likes it.

Pollard cut by the chiefs

That’s pretty surprising; do they really have someone better, even as second string?

I think Mike Brown and Jarrad Page are their starting safeties, but I am not too sure.

which means

Pollard was just too expensive for mere depth

Colts Release DT Terrance Taylor

The Indianapolis Colts released 4th round pick DT Terrance Taylor. I liked him coming into the draft; maybe someone in the Raiders’ player personnel department likes him too.

Slade Norris destroyed the periodic table, because he only recognizes the element of surprise.

ESPN’s draft coverage missed the moment when Al Davis and Tom Cable each took turns using Mel Kiper’s mock draft as toilet paper. - Chris Shellcroft

Stealth time is over

It is time to put the Best squad together now. Our needs are no secret to anyone, including our enemies. We need defensive linemen who can cause pure havoc for the opposing team, offensive linemen who can protect our quarterback better; most definitely we need astute tacklers to play professional Tackle Football. The offensive and defensive schemes, well, we can only hope that Mr. Davis comes to the realization (before the year is out) ‘70s and 80s’ football today is too obvious to be successful; in other words, hopefully the DC and the HC are allowed to make ad hoc changes and half-time adjustments this year, for a change?!

Linebackers?

We need help at the linebacker position. In my opinion, this is our weakest link. We must find a linebacker that can help stop LT! And Terdell Sands was a BUST. Another dumb $$$ move by Al Davis.

I know everyone wants to talk about Fargas

But what about the decision to keep Stanford Routt??? This dude did about as good as Terdell Sands, I mean this guy gets smoked every play. If he is on the field, the Monday night game against Dego will get ugly. The worst part about it is he will be on the field in nickle situations, i.e. “The two minute drill” in the 4th quarter when we will need a stop, and this guy can’t tackle, can’t cover, can’t catch!!! He should be nicknamed peso… because he’s WORTHLESS!!! We gotta figure something out on defense before the Monday night game… and you better believe I will be wearing all BLACK! That was a cool article, I like the idea of the Black towels as well, man this is gonna be a Looooonnnnngggg season (again)! At least my expectations aren’t all that high, so the let down shouldn’t hurt as bad as it did last year! JUST WIN BABY… or at least make it close!

just a thought

is andrew walter a better qb than Fry? at a minimum salary, if pacman jones comes back to 90% of what he once was, is that too much of a stretch? if gary russell clears waivers, is he eligible to practice squad? the focus is on DL and LB, we need to assume that our scouts are all over the wire; if that’s the case, no need to dump Fargas as we will absolutely need 3 RBs every game. Rankin is a little banged up but would not make it thru waivers and then practice squad. Fargas has earned his additional shot. He’ll come thru one way or the other.

Adam Jones is better than Stanford Routt will ever be, he would not be a bad

addition in light of what we currently are working with. Also Walter’s can stay where he is, he did not want to be a Raider so let him be a fan..And no, Frye is a better QB. Now our players will need to rise to the occasion as individuals, to win you have to beat your man. If the Raiders don’t man up then they will lose, they have to play their best to win every game, they don’t have the luxury of having bad games and still winning. Garcia needed to get Cut, he was brought in to be a mentor and he only thought about himself. Again I would have signed Michael Vick, he would have worked with J-Russ mentally and by the way that is his week point, J-Russ has to get mentally better and he can be a beast.

Fargas’ last season with the Raiders unless he just has a killer season, he was a Davis fav so he may hang on longer. It is show time now fellas, hopefully we can win some games.
