Raiders Sign KR/PR Yamon Figurs to Futures Contract
Al Davis' obsession with speed continues as ESPN's Bill Williamson is reporting the Raiders signed return specialist Yamon Figurs to a futures contract. Figures, a 3rd round pick in the 2007 Draft, spent his first two years with the Ravens before splitting 2009 between Detroit and Tampa Bay.
Figurs' rookie year was his best, as he put up 1309 total return yards with 2 touchdowns. Figurs and Nick Miller figure to compete for the starting KR job in training camp.

I Actually Like This Pick
A lot. I thought we would grab him in that draft, but I guess we got him now. Good choice.

Agreed
One area where Davis’ speed fetish doesn’t hurt is KR. And cripes, it’s not like we couldn’t use the help. Taking a shot on just about any guy helps.

Cripes yes! Cribbs would be expensive anyway

Cribbs would be worth every cent imo
i also heard that Al went after Cribbs hard when there was talk of him being traded last year.

nice...
the KR was weak this year and so was the PR
I love JLH and his flat-top but on PR he didn’t do much
if we can get solid returns and a big return from time to time it will help on O

Figurs is a good move
because we get a more experienced guy with past success as a KR (still pissed we didn’t keep Justin Miller), at the very least he can push Nick Miller and keep Gary Russell from KR. You should never have a full back as a kick returner.

What the hell is a "futures contract."
Is this like a promise ring? You know, “I won’t commit to you now, but I promise to consider it in the future.” Is the guy on the team or not? If he’s on the team, then he’s signed a regular contract, hasn’t he? And if a “futures contract” is something different, can the player still work out with the rest of the team?
maybe there's some contingency involved, e.g. If some future event does not occur then
we take him at $X. It doesn’t sound like a sure thing that he’s coming.

Explaination of Futures Contract
The NFL season is technically from March to March, and players usually under contract for that period of time, including impending free agents. However, players who were not on an active roster at the end of the 2009 regular season are eligible to sign futures contracts for the 2010 season beginning this March. Players that were on practice squads are also eligible to sign futures contracts prior to the free agency period.
As has been reported in the news recently, many teams are signing these types of players to futures contracts prior to the free agency period for the 2010 season.
I'm in the smallest of minorities, but I'm still a big supporter of JaMarcus Russell.
So it is like a promise ring then
I have a question, what if the future never happens…dum, duh, dum, dum.

lol!
A promise ring means this: “I promise, never, to marry you!”
We need to be working out potential returners now, so Al gets his speed fix out of the way before the draft.
Then back to the original matter at hand, acquiring sumo wrestlers…

Much needed addition
Our desperate need of help in special teams just got better with the addition of Figurs. Hopefully Figures and N.Miller can get us some better field advantage for our offence.
It was mind boggling
that after Nick Miller got hurt that no replacement was made at that time. Holland, Russell returning kicks? What the hell were they thinking? Higgins for whatever reason had a very bad year on punt returns last season. I think it is time for the Raiders to put some real emphasis on KR and PR. Cable seemed to think anyone could return kicks, hell I have expected him to ask Pears to return kicks. The minute Nick got hurt they should have brought in someone. I know the Raiders don’t believe in position players returning kicks but I thought they should have had Branch returning kicks, he was outstanding in college. Why not McFadden, at least he is fast, and god knows we don’t use him for anything but running into an opposing tackle.
Legitimate lament. It's behind us now. Some of us suggested these two earlier for returns
I wanted Branch, DMc and Huff to return kicks.

i thought branch got hurt his last year in conn. on kick offs?

Seriously
For much of the season we had two fullbacks returning kickoffs. What good is McFumbles?
Put damn JaMarcus Russell back there

Make him a long snapper
With the cannon, he might be able to set a record for how far back anyone’s ever snapped a ball.

...
even DHB could of tried returning kicks
by chris_arf on Jan 14, 2010 4:33 PM PST via mobile reply actions
we entertained that thought as well, and most of us came to the conclusion the hands thing
could’ve made it a disaster.

DHB
is a skill position pick, so Al wont risk him on KR/PR, plus his hands would be an issue catching kickoffs.
plus, i wondered all year why JLH didnt return KO’s to free him up a little. let him see a block and get some speed built up, which he couldnt get on his PR’s this year.
me too about jlh. Gary Russell????

after watching the saints cards game
bush is exactly what DMC should be. not an everydown back, but get utility use out of him like the saints do bush. what would be wrong with 217 all purpose yards and 2 tds??? damn

Yamon Figurs
Is an improvement of Gary Russell. Period.
Tommy Kelly's ass won us that game against Denver!
To be honest
I have no idea who Figurs is, but he was a 3rd round pick so he must have had a few scouts that thought he would be good. I’m all for this since it was ridiculous last year that this team had no backup for Miller after he got hurt, poor planning as far as I can determine.
to bad jano.
didnt have a guy that could of put together some nice returns, hell he could of had maybe 10 more FG attempts since our dredded offense could move the ball much. a good return guy could have gotten jano to the pro bowl and possibly won us a few more games.
very nice
This is a great point. Remember when Jano doinked that field goal off the crossbar from 64 yards. That kick could’ve gone 70. Figurs figures to be a GOOD speed pick-up for once.

thanks, and yea i remember!
honestly if a guy could get us to the 45yd line once in a while, a 3 and out of 8 yards would put us in FG range from the opponents 47yd line. hell from mid field jano is better than a 50-50 shot.

whats sad is
after cable put in russell over holland, who was horrible, our returns avg. went down over a yard, and cable kept him in there thanksgiving on! dumb move tommy boy!
just looking at his gut would piss me off. Then watching Carr kick ass for the Ravens bugged me even more.
Carr was a playmaker…..oh well i guess we couldnt free up money cause we had to give it to Javon FUCKING Walker Dammit !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Remember the 98 yard pick six against Big Ben
in the first time a 5-11 Raiders team beat Pittburgh in a season following their super bowl victory?
He’s right about Phillip Buchanon too. He wasn’t a bad returner, either.
