Playing to the Crowd: How Rob Ryan Plans to Get the Raiders HC Job
So I was checking out Raiders news sites this evening to see if there was any new word about our head coaching situation and I read a few very interesting quotes from former Raiders defensive coordinator Rob Ryan.
First Ryan said that he'd be interested in the Raiders head coaching job if it became available. Then, according to Jerry McDonald, Ryan talked up JaMarcus Russell a little bit, essentially saying he was a dangerous offensive weapon and that he was surprised Russell hadn't reached his full potential yet.
Rob, I didn't know you were this genius. Ryan is obviously playing on Al Davis' hopes for an offense led by Russell by hinting that he can get the most out of Russell where Coach Cable has failed to do so.
This could get very interesting in the coming weeks.

I just put something up from something I heard on Sirius on my way to work this morning
Didn’t see yours! But you have some nuggets on the Russell bit.
I’m torn as to whether I want a coaching change again, and also on if I even like Ryan as coach.
I’m just torn. Such is being a Raider fan…

Guys
I already posted the link to the original USA Today artcle early morning yesterday—check the “Where are we?” post.

Sorry, Spirals, seems you're always a couple steps ahead of us with articles and their links!
Unfortunately most of us don’t peruse the entire site before our quick reactions to these nuggets. I actually hate when stuff like that comes out, regarding the ‘ifs’ this, ‘I would do that’.
Who said anything about anyone, including the Raider nation actually wanting him to coach.
Heck, we didn’t really want Tom, either, but once again, had to settle and try to rally behind him, skeptical, though, we may have been.

What is Ryan going to do?
What’s his QB or offense credentials? He’s a defense coach, that’s what he knows. And it sounds like if he got the job we’d be stuck with Russell again….so I say no to bringing him in.
Win, Lose, or Tie, Raiders til I die!
Buddy Ryan was a defensive minded head coach. There are some successful guys, like Wade Phillips
with OC’s. That’s been a more successful formula than the alternative offensive coordinating head coach with a DC, but Im no more excited about Ryan than you. I’d stay with Cable and get the oc, if he were to be the choice.

Smoke screen!!
I think it would be a huge mistake to have R. Ryan as coach. Maybe he see’s something the rest of the Whole Raider Nation doesn’t . Russell has been in this league for 3 years going on 4 and has Regressed so bad he has showed absolutely no situational awerness as a QB in 3 years from what Reports and Blogs and even player statements his work ethic is pathetic! and last but not least has declined to even restructure his contract knowing he hasn’t even performed up to being a #1 Draft pick choice. Cable in my opinion deserves another year one year is not enough to make a immediate impact on this team considering what he had to work with not only that but Al Davis should blame his self for the way the team is ,he gives no major role or leadway to his coaches tp make important position changes that NEED to take place. No matter who coaches this team they will always have a MONKEY on there back.
smoke screen cont....
Oh I should point out that if you really keep up with this Cable issue or topic around the sports media there have been NO major talk of a First Class free agent coach wanting or even entertaining the thought of coaching this team makes you stop and think..
Apparently, In My opinion
Rob Ryan wants to get the word out, like, Look what My brother did with Mark Sanchez. That guy threw 12 TD’s and 20 INT’s. The Raiders have the kind of running game that could produce a championship caliber quality.
Rob Ryan obviously believes that he can coach the defense as well as his brother. He thinks with the running game he will be able to manage the clock and limit JRuss’ throwing.
This is the kind of philosophy I expected from Tom Cable this season, but i think he was looking to cater to Al davis’ pass first philosophy, which could cost him his job ultimately.
I think Rob Ryan would be a good hire for the Raiders. I thought they were going to hire him when he interviewed a few years back, and i was disappointed when they did not do so.
dear god if he becomes coach I'm not going to watch the Raiders at all next year
the defensive scheme will go back to no blitzing and no mixing in of zones, Russell will start from game 1 to game 16, and we’ll be worse than we’ve ever been.
What’s sad is that this will probably happen too. And right when we were getting the pieces together, especially on defense, to be successful.
Evey- "Are you a crazy person?"
V- "I'm quite sure they'll say so."
V for Vendetta, blowing your mind away since 2005.
Who knows?
If he does get it, I’ll have HIGH expectations on russel and the team.
Glad to see that very few people are getting excited about
the idea of Rob Ryan as the head coach. The Raiders can do better than this guy.
I got the impression, that Robb was rubbing salt in Al's wounds, NOT applying for a job

I didn't get that impression
Rob Ryan didn’t really leave Oakland on bad terms, has always been respectful of Al Davis, and is in a situation in Cleveland where he’s on a pretty short leash as it is. I thought his comments about being interested in the job were genuine.
I'm in the smallest of minorities, but I'm still a big supporter of JaMarcus Russell.
Cable and JaMarcass are staying put
Cable survived the Thursday meeting and Willie Brown quit in disgust. Deal with it gentlemen.

All speculation
First, the Raiders (John Herrera) confirmed that Cable and Davis would meet on Thursday, hen on Friday “the Raiders” would not confirm whether or not there even was a meeting on Thursday.
But since we are in speculation mode, let’s carry it further with this report today from PFT.com and Schefter:
Tuesday could be key date for Cable
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on January 16, 2010 1:56 PM ET
Tom Cable may not have to twist in the wind much longer.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter points out that the NFL calendar may give us an answer to Al Davis’ intentions. Teams must inform their assistant coaches whether they will be retained by the third Tuesday after the end of the regular season.
Davis is expected to make numerous changes to his assistant coaches Tuesday. Cable is expected to learn his fate by then, as well.
One bad sign for Cable: Schefter says Davis has already started to contact potential head coaching replacements.
What isn’t speculation is that this coming Tuesday’s deadline for assistant coach retention is valid, so someone should be speaking out on Tuesday.

That ESPN, Chronicle, and the rest are reporting on the 'death watch' of Cable
adds nothing factual. Davis may even be influenced by the media’s “reasoned opinions” to thwart them since there’s no love between the mainstream press and Al. But, Al has already decided to keep Tom for another year so the media is wasting our time printing empty words for mass consumption. Our own speculations and assessments are closer to the truth, e.g. mine.

today, ESPN reported that according "those within the Raiders organization"
Jamarcus will stay, no matter what.

So? That's a probability piece based on speculation
by Sons-of-Blanda on Jan 16, 2010 10:39 AM PST up reply actions
Just like it's speculation
that WIlie Brown left when because Cable is being kept on even though we don’t for sure that he is being kept on. Nor do we really know why Willie Brown retired. You can’t call someone out on speculation when you yourself use speculation as fact.
Win, Lose, or Tie, Raiders til I die!
"Probability" has various shades. The probability that we go to the SB next year
is quite low while the probability is high that Willie Brown left (when he did and under the circumstances in play) in disgust upon learning Al’s intention to retain Cable.

NO IT'S FUCKING NOT
You have to stop transferring your hatred of the man onto every fucking thing that happens in Oakland. There’s so much that it could be about. Davis could be looking to draft some one stupid. Davis could be looking at another no name head coach that doesn’t make sense. Could be anything.
You’re hatred for the mean is getting obsessive.
Win, Lose, or Tie, Raiders til I die!
Time will tell. If Al does draft, e.g a WR or a QB or a SS then that might have
been the reason Willie left. But, for now, the most likely reason is the retention of Cable. We must wait and see. This coming Tuesday is a significant date b/c of the the CBA rule re notification to assistant coaches. So, again, I am standing by my assessment given all the various inputs I have to work with.

I still don't see
how you’re coming ot that conclusion when there’s so many variables. Maybe he was just ready to retire. I don’t see how a DB coach would even care if Cable stays or leaves. You would think Marshall would care more. Or Hackett. Or any of the other assistant coaches.
Win, Lose, or Tie, Raiders til I die!
maybe willie is a man that turns 70 this year and is ready to just...
RETIRE.

If Willie was hopeful that the missing pieces were coming
he wouldn’t have retired when and how he did. Recall the circumstances of his decision and how he casually announced to reporters his decision as if he were telling them he’d decided to sell his car or take a cruise – the offhandedness of his announcement made it all the more disturbing.

How do you not know
that’s not just his demeanor? Do you know him personally? Have you ever socialized with him?
Win, Lose, or Tie, Raiders til I die!
Moreover, this "inside source" in the Raider organization is quickly losing, or has already
lost all credibility – if s/he even exists at all. The Mercury News will start a story based on this fictitious or real anonymous source and the other rags pick it up and run with it till the media speaks in one monolithic voice of sheer propaganda. For all we know, Al knows he’s a rat in the organization and is purposefully leaking his stuff that is false to mess with the media and undermine the credibility of the inside source -Parmesan-cheese eating mole.

for all the guys saying keep cable
i think the players would line up faster to get rob back. how many called him and met up with him before the cleve. game and in their interviews they said how much they loved this guy. you guys think cable has passion, please, it took little fassell to get in a refs face on a b.s. call while cable stayed put. if that was rob, as we seen when he was just a DC, this guy would get “chucky” mad to the point of fist fighting, and get in his players face. in 06 we had the 3rd best D in the nfl. our run game has suffered because we havent had a stud NT since Teddy W and our MLB issues, which reflected on Robs over all D. this guy will be a better HC than a DC, with a good OC and DC along with him. i say try him, keep marshall through his second year, hire a quality OC and do the right offseason signings, vince w( to get with seymour again) and mcclain in the first and our D is in place. Rob Ryan is a close as we got to chucky and Rob Ryan has 2 SB rings! his lineage is far greater than Cable!
I agree
Cable sux, anyone is better. Since offensive coaches obviously havent been working, maybe a defensive guy is what is needed.
you smell that? that's what a winner smells like....

Gilbride OC and Ryan family reunion?
“…Gilbride’s most memorable image may be a 1994 sideline incident while he was offensive coordinator for the Houston Oilers, which resulted in defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan throwing a punch at Gilbride during a nationally televised game.”
it's unlikely that Gilbride
will leave the Giants on his own to come here.
Win, Lose, or Tie, Raiders til I die!
"it's unlikely ... Gilbride willl leave ... on his own..." Are you suggesting his wife wears the pants?

I'm suggesting
that the Giants wont’ fire him and he’s under contract. And you knew that. Don’t be stupid.
Win, Lose, or Tie, Raiders til I die!
Since when has a mere contract stood between Al and an acquisition?

That would be tampering
if he’s still under contract. That was the whole reason Al called Tampa Bay when Kiffin tried firing Ryan and wanted to bring in Monte.

oh but after twin bro rex beat those super chargers
wise ol al might like the new RAIDER RYAN slogan! it wouldnt surprise me one little bit, one way or the other.
