The Rich Gannon Interview Will Not be Posted (Yet):

I had been foaming at the mouth for a week in anticipation of Bhrynno and the Rest of S&BPs e-mail interview with Rich Gannon. Then when it arrived today I was astounded at the straight talk that Rich responded with. Unfortunately, we need to confirm a few things with Mr. Gannon before it is re-posted.

Cheers,

- Saint

No problem, Saint.

i was a little puzzled by the preface, but he and Dave were clear we were sharing this on a public blog.

Your call, though. I you would like me to attempt to contact them to see if we have permission to quote him “officially” on this “unofficial” blog, I can.

If you wish to leave it alone, I will respect that, as well. I found the reaching out refreshing, and also that it felt more of a former Raider wishing to share with loyal fans of the team, who share his wish to be synonymous with a winning franchise, and that it also gave it less a feel of something we’d get from a so-called “media” report.

Appreciate the update.

If you clarify it, then it's all good:

I just think that they may have underestimated the power of this “Little” Blog! Heh ;)

yeah. I absolutely understand. If I'm able to do so without as much trouble, i will

I’ll just send a quick email request to the show, and see if they’re cool with it. I’m with you on how powerful this little blog can be, too. I think Rich has a propensity to underestimate the power of opening his mouth on public radio, but totally appreciate that about him!

dude. it's too funny that you say that, because I feel that if I'd have made up answers for Rich, they wouldn't have looked much different!

I guess it goes to Spirals Galore’s point that he didn’t really say anything we haven’t bounced off one another in some way shape or form in a long time, he just solidified it a little for me. I knew most of the things asked had been spoken about in either rumors, or actual conversations I’ve heard in the past, but had no real sources to cite, or to make it official. I know what he said didn’t really do that either, but when it mirrors exactly some of the things that Tim Brown said days earlier, perhaps my all-time favorite Raiders, it sounded much louder than ever.

I felt bad because someone specifically asked about the qbs, and I believe they were referring to the guys actually capable of playing the position on this team, and I didn’t get the Grad question in there. I remember telling whomever had posted that question that I’d ask that, and replying that I bet Rich would say he sees a lot of himself in Bruce! I wish I’d have gotten that one in! It’d be too ironic if he answered that way!

Anyways, I already inquired if they’d be cool with reposting it, specifiying this is a very public blog. I’m pretty sure they are. I think spirals has a point about how some are pretty general, and not really anything extremely enlightening, so I’m inclined to believe it will be a non issue.

I’m with Saint’s decision to pull it for now: it’s probably the right thing to do. As I said, his preface was puzzling… Almost politician like, no, SOB?

I'm calling that one in, soon, rodeo! and unlike prefaced and disclaimered emails

I’m free to post whatever he answers me on the show without any clearance at all! It is transcripted and all!

I think we both know what he’d say; maybe Al sees a little Gannon in Grad, too, hence the reason he refuses to see he’s our best qb we currently have?

The positive qualities Gannon exhibited on the field are not the same qualities

that Davis takes exception to. Gradkowski has never melted-down in a game nor has he spoken ill of Al or the Raider organization. Therefore, the notion that Al resents Grad, based on the positive similarities between Rich and Bruce, is far fetched.

I know. Silly speculative response on my part, but not really a serious one

more along the lines that I’d like to hear Gannon’s patented knee-jerk responses on Gradkowski.

Gannon is the man. I miss those days bad. Chuckie dolls in the stands, knowing we should win every week, actually having an offense, etc etc etc

The thing that really pisses me off is Gannon saying that we woulld have won MULTIPLE superbowls if Al Davis didnt run off Gruden.

Fuck Al Davis. I hope he rots in hell

I hate what Al does to ruin the organization. I could never hate the man, and can’t stand when people wish his death. To stand down, and hire the right people to do what they get paid to do, is what he needs to do. Sadly, most of us here at SABP know not much will change as long as Al continues to make the same moves that put us in this predicament.

I agree. J. He's just got to let people do it for him, now.

It’s not easy! Many teams remain on a quest for the super bowl, so he’s got to hire some guys he can trust, and let them do their thing.

I’m in agreement with Sons and some other posters that it just takes a rare personality, a truly special coach, one able to demand respect, to prove successful.

I’m afraid he’s just after guys willing to work with Jamarcus still.

It was a great interview while it was up!

Gannon was the man!

As a Chiefs fan, I was pissed when we got stuck with Elvis Grbac, and the Raiders got “our” Quarterback to go to a SuperBowl. I actually rooted for the Raiders that year. They were the best team in the league. Stupid Tuck rule! Anyway, hope you guys get permission to repost. Gannon is the real deal!

"The way this works is you string together some good games, some good practices and you get momentum and you gain confidence," linebacker Mike Vrabel said. "It can be a real positive for your team. It builds on itself."

saint, you're giving some mixed signals and, on the one hand, I have processed what Rich

stated in the answers, whereas, the pulling of the post, your intoxication reference, and mention of SBP’s influence (in the Gannon context) leaves me scratching my head.

by Sons-of-Blanda on Jan 22, 2010 8:20 PM PST up reply actions

It sounds like he's afraid of being sued by Al Davis.

And while nothing in the interview was actually states that negative I don’t think it would have been an issue.

At least that’s why I think it was removed. But unless he can post a cease and desist or a take down notice by a lawyer that we or Gannon over stepped, then I think he overstepped.

But it his blog. I was pretty sure him answering the questions was on the record, but I guess I’ve been wrong before. I think you overestimate this blog.

guys, at this point I'm pretty sure it was a precautionary measure. from what I gathered if we get the clear double checking with the show and Rich

we’ll repost. No need to shroud this in any more mystery than it needs to be. Who’s to say who’s right about who reads this blog, Mike.

i do know I was quite through with blogging anything Raiders before I discovered this site, where I was refreshed to find that knowledgable and engaging Raiders fans with class actually exist, so there may be some truth to both an ex-player’s underestimation and a contributor’s overestimation.

Don’t sell the site short. There are some tremendously talented writers that have their fingers very much on the pulse of what happens with this organization, often light years ahead of BSPN, and remarkably, somehow less opinionated? And judging by the quality of some articles I read, Iwouldn’t be one bit surprised if some of these hacks regulary prowl these blogs. Perhaps a bit of a stretch, but like I said, I feel Saint was being responsible because of the language written in the email. It was misleading, and he’s doing the responsible thing as an editor here; once again, fine job.

What? If I recall the interview answers, I don’t remember him really attacking the organization. We asked questions, he answered. It’s nothing news writers haven’t been saying. You should post a clear detailed reasoning it got pulled. Brhynno went out of his way to get questions and send them to him and post the answers and you just pulled the post after it was up for 2 days. You saw what questions were going to be asked. So what content was inappropriate? The fact he was honest about Davis?

From his other post
3) With the current interview, that wasn’t an interview, but a chat…SBN has implemented a new rule about interviews. If you want to do an interview for Silver and Black Pride and secure the interview, either, I, or, one of the staff will edit/format the interview before and after it is sent before it either happens or is posted. I know that when we pull our resources, we can be the best site on SBN, but, we have to follow some rules within this nebulous cloud called the internet and this site.

I’m assuming that people that own SBN say it deosn’t fit the requirements?

I wouldn't call a post on a blog, stepping out.

Nor was this at all an attempt to do so. I gave the uninhibited words, and as some other pointed out, ours were quite spelled out correctly, and those were copied verbatim.

This was no attempt to bring attention to myself, despite what you might have gathered. I merely wanted to come to a better understanding on something, and shared with the many contributor’s I enjoy so much my experience. I should’ve realized it wasn’t the proper forum.

SO I WILL WRITE IN CAPITALS FOR YOUR EASE:
1. GANNON SAID THAT HE WANTS TO HELP THE RAIDERS IN NO OTHER WAY THAN BY SITTING WITH THE QB’S AND TELLING THEM ABOUT HIS 17-YEAR EXPERIENCE AS A QB.
2. A LITTLE LATER IN HIS RESPONSES, HE SAID THAT HE “HAD A SENSE” THAT JR—THE QB IN NEED OF MOST HELP—DID NOT ACT LIKE SOMEONE NEEDING HELP.
SO—WHEN DID HE ACQUIRE THE ABOVE SENSE?

I think he wanted to sit down w/ him and teach him how to read the film and prepare. Then go over the fundamentals of footwork etc. I think you’re reading into that a little to literally.

I think he misused the word needing for wanting. Perhaps confusion, perhaps to not actually take another dig at Russell.

Gannon gave very general stereotypical answers to almost

every question put to him. There were no anecdotes, nothing worthy of being entered into an autobiography or even worth telling friends over beers at a pub. Most of our society here know that we’ve been hoodwinked by this former star turned radio mouth. Rich’s responses proved why Al Davis doesn’t want him around; Gannon is hostile to Al Davis, his tone and responses seethed resentment.
As for that chicken-shit lame-ass disclaimer that led off Gannon’s responses, how disingenuous was that! It was Gannon’s insurance policy – legal ploy – to give him the option of having the post removed – which he (or his station/employer) seemed to have exercised. Anything to offer us here saint?
I enjoyed having Gannon as a Raider Quarterback and rate him 5th best in franchise history (behind Stabler, Lamonica, Blanda, Plunkett) but as for "the man" off the field, I remain unimpressed.

by Sons-of-Blanda on Jan 22, 2010 9:05 PM PST reply actions

Ultimately, while I found some of it refreshing, I have to agree with you

I haven't seen this asked yet. I just want to know one thing.

Well two things.

First: To whoever did the interview, why on earth did you publish his email address in the post? Now hundreds of people have access to Rich Gannon’s private email address, which he’ll probably need to delete.

Secondly: How did you confirm that it was actually him by conducting an interview over e-mail?

Not trying to be harsh, just want to clear up a few questions that everyone has right now.

you ignoramus .

Brhynno went through alot to get this done. He took our questions, then we sorta quasi voted on them, then he put them into a format for Rich Gannon to answer, then we waited some on pins and needles waiting for the response. The man has a day job working in retail as a manager. Dealing with people sucks. Dealing with people like you takes a special kind of person not go to postal. This takes a lot of time and energy out of you. I’m sure also he has a personal life.

so then the questions finally come and to make us happy like a great guy he is he throws them up real quick. Hard to read, but he said would he format them later. True to his word, he did. Edit and Censor have 2 different meanings. Now leave the guy alone.

Look. I agree it's gotten out of hand. I stand by my decision to request his permission in an email

He telephoned me. that, I cannot prove, but could provide phone records if I had to. He instructed me to contact the show’s producer, which I did, and sent questions, with the names of each person attached, and the email said it would be posted on a public blog.

I admitted his preface was puzzling, but to me, didn’t think that posting it on a blog was a big deal, Hate me for that, if you wish. I could care less. I just wanted to have a clearer understanding of something, that hopefully would clear up Gannon’s name, and it blew up into this.

If you go back, you’ll see it’s been pulled, and we’re awaiting permission, upon the editor’s (not me) discovery of certain things. I am not a writer, nor a professional reporter, just a fan who wants the Raiders to get better.

Now, I have a better understanding of the authenticity question, which was my 2nd question and which wasn’t answered originally, but responded with, “troll” and such. I have a much clearer understanding now. I’m not hating on you, I said it was a good look for us getting Gannon, congrats on that and I can’t wait to read it.

I know, and I apologize.

I agree, it’s a touchy subject. I feel the most unfortunate part is my attempts were to clear up my perceived misconception about something Gannon said to a caller, and believed his frank and uninhibited responses to the hardcore fans that we are would do that.

If he indeed tells us we were wrong for doing it, then I am the dumbass, and this post will never again see the light of day.

If that is the correct interpretation, then I owe Rich Gannon an apology

and, I believe that is the only reasonable interpretation (i.e. don’t add to, subtract from, or print my statements out of context) I apologize here and now to Rich whose name was dragged through the mud last night due to a misinterpretation of his so called ‘disclaimer’.

by Sons-of-Blanda on Jan 23, 2010 8:54 AM PST up reply actions

Exactly

I am the one that edited the post (just to make it easier to read, i.e bold and italics and the heading), then put it on the front page. Your interpretation was mine as well which is why it went to the front page. I had seen enough information from Brian to understand the context of the Gannon side of the dialogue to know that Gannon had to know full well that his answers would be published in a public forum.

I believe that Gannon just didn’t want his message, that was sent by email to be misused and put into the uncontrollable “internet wild”. That kind of understanding is the understanding that I have with Tyvon Branch that allowed me to publish his statements and answers on this blog. It is unfortunate that the admins with SBN did not see it that way and just jumped to conclusions. Of course, if Gannon truly was unaware that his answers would be published in a public forum, then his common sense and and logic would be at a 4th graders level.

This is pretty ridiculous. He expects all of this to be kept secretly? If this was an interview with a site like ESPN, this would be on every sports gossip show/blog in an hour.
Guys…here are my responses that I share with you and YOU ONLY…please don’t betray my trust. You guys deserve better…much better. The team lacks leadership and toughness at every level of the organization. No one person is going to be able to fix it. You need some ass kickers who are talented and don’t give a shit about hurting people’s feelings…aka Gruden, Allen, Callahan etc. These kind of people don’t grow on trees. If Al really truly cared he would stand down and hire some of these type of people to run the team. You folks deserve a winner. My only regret is that I wasn’t able to win more games as a Raider but if you had any idea how difficult it was to function in that environment you would realize that we accomplished a lot with what we had to work with. No excuses, just simply the truth. I hope that there are better days ahead for all of you and OUR TEAM!

God damn what a bitch fight this turned out to be haha

firstly Great work bryhno for getting this done and while I think rich should know full well that this is a public blog as it would be rediculas for him to do this without himself or one of his people checking out who we were, his disclaimer was very confusing and throws enough doubt on the situation to make Saints decision to pull it fully understandable. Quite frankly his answers were pretty basic ramblings and I would not be surprised if he WAS drunk when answering. The other thing I think about is that the Raiders organisation was kind enough to allow Tyvonn interact with us all season and I would hate to see that screwed up by giving Gannon a forum to bag Al, and as I said his responses were disjointed at best anyway. And you know what Rich I don’t know if we would have won multiple superbowls if chucky stayed but I know we would have won one if you didn’t self combust at the sight of Gruden on the other sideline.

Good morning everyone!

Sorry I missed this last night. I try to get some sleep now and then.

After reading all the comments I think the following:

1. Nothing Rich says will ever make Sons of Blanda happy because Rich places blame at Al’s feet. Oz will never be happy with Rich because he blames him for an entire SB loss.

2. Spirals – Why do you feel that it is contradictory for Rich to want to help Jamarcus even though he feels that: A. Jamarcus either doesn’t want the help or B. Jamarcus thinks he doesn’t need the help? As an educator, do you just throw people to the side who act like Jamarcus? Rich made it clear he wants to help.

3. Sounds like SBN asked that the post be stricken until we get confirmation from Rich as to whether or not it can be posted based on Rich’s disclaimer. Maybe Rich didn’t or doesn’t grasp the reach of these blogs and that’s his fault. (Then again there are a lot of people over 45 who don’t grasp the concept.) As part of the media at this point in his career, Rich better get caught up on the world of blog.

4. Since none of us has to face each other, bloggers, including those who run them, can be real jerks. We (I’m including myself) ought to take the time to think about our responses to others as if we had to actually stand face to face and say them. Quite frankly I’d rather be sitting at a neighborhood pub with all of you discussing the Raiders while sipping a scotch so we could get to know each other a little better so we would know where each of us is coming from. Since that’s not possible, I’ll just try to be more respectful to everyone…except Sons and Spirals. :-)

Rusty23! I was wondering where you went last night.

It was much more complex, and I was just getting started when the post was pulled out. I will explain later, right now I just came back from a full day of teaching.

Speaking of teaching and dealing with students who have the same attitude as JR’s. I did have one student two years ago who we recruited on a full scholarship in this expensive private college. The guy was unmotivated as hell—he thought he had come to college not to learn, but to shine with what he already knew, which is little, as you can imagine, at 18. There was also an Al Davis there… It was a spectacular failure on my part, given the time and effort I invested in this kid.

But there are a lot of students whose potential I’ve been able to unlock. One student started with solid F’s but persisted in coming to office hours, and I was shocked at one point later in the semester when he started turning in B+ and A- work. His final was an A. Go figure.

Insightful, Russ. Be glad you made the right decision to go to bed!

i admit, as you pointed out, I react in ways in which I am not proud; I try to check myself and retract my statements, or at leastt apologize, to rectify the situation always.

As I’ve said, Saint made the right decision based on the language in the q&a responses, and nothing else. He did not speak personally with Rich, or Dave Hagen, so his judgment was based on that was the only correct one to make.

I may be guilty of a faux pax for not heeding that same language before popping it up, but once again, I defend my position as I made the assumption without getting that very important factor clarified in advance, that it was “assumed” this would be posted on a very public, highly engaging, and blog of folks with very high integrity, whether we are professionals, or recreational discussers of all things Silver and Black. That was, in retrospect, a wrong assumption to make.

Ultimately, what words are said can be powerful, but will result is that this has achieved a martyr status as a piece if crushed, and whether or not Rich realizes it (we’ve said, he doesn’t fully grasp the power of his words, in whatever media, nonetheless this powerful blog, and yes, I believe it is very), words unspoken, and in this case, perhaps retracted, or even as SOB, who I believe astutely pointed out, prefaced with disclaimers that make them mean squat, can be ten times more powerful than those spoken.

I have said I find it unfortunate that this only further shrouded Rich’s offer to help the organization in mystery, but I believe we’ll all utimately still come to a more accurate conclusion of the truth.

We can all post a million words based on this outcome; whether it’s allowed to be reposted or not. At the end of the day, Rich may find that not allowing his words to be posted after positing his position, however general or guarded by “wormish” disclaimers, may only serve to damage his reputation further.

My initial take on the whole situation

when I read the interview before it was taken down, I assumed that what Gannon meant by having the responses stay for our eyes only was that we shouldn’t disseminate or try to exploit the Q and A to other websites for personal gain or what have you. I find it hard to believe that Gannon doesn’t understand how a blog operates, unless he believed that there was someway to perhaps privately email the responses to any interesting sbp members. Either way, I commend you guys for taking the time to properly vet the whole situation before you potentially hung someone out to dry and great get in first place, it was an awesome read.

Yes, it appears all have come to a much clearer understanding of what became so obfuscated last night

We did the right thing, based on the language, and it will behoove us to double check, maintain the intergrity of the site, not jeopardize the wonderful efforts of Richard and all who did the Tyvon segments, and weigh all options before we act accordingly.

I think we’re all at least a little correct to say, he probably means, don’t twist his words into something he didn’t say—as can so often happen in he said she said contexts—and perhaps we don’t give Rich the credit he deserves for understanding the power of his spoken (or in this case—emailed words). I’ve no doubt he understands what a blog is, and that his original intentions were sent uninhibited (by alcohol, quite possibly it appears! lol!), and he was aware they would get posted on a public blog. But, as previously stated, by the language written alone, it merits double checking, and Saint did the right thing.

Well, the email request to get the "clarification" we seek, last Friday, remains without a reply

I’m going to request clarification once more to both Mr. Hagen and to the Sirius Blitz with Schein and Gannon; I may actually muster up the energy to call the show and try to get it from the horse’s mouth, with Mr. Hagen’s nod of course, but I’ve been discouraged by the silence thus far…

Unfortunate, but to all who asked questions, I’ll be happy to provide you all with the email correspondence to your private emails, if nothing comes back. Feel free to hit me on my email posted on my profile. I would say I’m certain that is not, the “betrayal of trust,” now infamous here… of which Mr. Gannon admonished to not do.

I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt at this point that my request was just overlooked… If not, oh well!
