Further to Rated-R Superstar's post on the Hue Jackson hiring, we have finally an official position from the Raiders (John Herrera) regarding Jackson's position in relation to JaMarcus Russell. I also include a quote from Tom Cable who is definitely acting like he is the head coach:

From Paul Gutierrez of the SacBee:
Received a pleasant call from Raiders senior executive John Herrera, who was reaching out in response to today's column on new offensive coordinator Hue Jackson. Herrera wanted to "set the record straight" on the thinking that Jackson was brought in to "only" work with JaMarcus Russell.

"Hue Jackson was hired to work with the entire offense," Herrera said, "regardless of who the quarterback might be."

Reading between the lines, that means nothing is guaranteed Russell, though he will have the opportunity to compete for the starting quarterback position.

"[JaMarcus] is just one man on this football team," Tom Cable said KHTK's Mike Lamb Thursday. "He knows he's got to better, we know he's got to get better, but everyone on this team, coaching staff and players alike, has got to get better."

Expected this. Amy Trask, OR CEO, at least, knows that season ticket sales

would diminish if “it was all about JaMarcass Russell” so Herera, minister of propaganda (and major domo to the Raider liege) makes this pronouncement. On the other hand, I never doubted that Jackson was brought in to more effectively (sanely) run our O, as well as to develop Russell and Bey.

Here is the original report re Cable’s interview last night, with a link to the audio:

this report has Cable intently watching linemen drills at Senior Bowl

“Cable is here scouting players and doing it as intensely as if he were coaching a game. Some coaches here, like Pittsburgh’s Mike Tomlin or St. Louis’ Steve Spagnuolo like getting right up close to the action and tracking the drills from only steps away. Others like the Jets’ Rex Ryan or the Chiefs’ Todd Haley prefer to roam the premises and catch up with old friends in between glances at the field. Not Cable. I’m not sure anyone in the entire stadium monitored practice as closely as the embattled Raiders coach. On Tuesday and Wednesday, he planted himself in the middle of the stands with a couple members from his Oakland staff, and intently scanned the field. He remained in his seat for the duration of each of the North and South practices and never moved, his eyes always on the action, usually focusing on the linemen drills. It was fascinating to see just how locked in Cable was while watching practice from the stands.”

Ha ha, you're all wrong for that!

I love the comparison to a large, orange squash. “la calabasa”! Too funny.

As long as that pumpkin gets the sumo wrestlers and Iupati types, and the Suh, Cody, and McCoy types on the other side (of the similar mold..) I could care less if he turns into a stagecoach temporarily, and back into the pumpkin again!

Not that any word from Herrerra's mouth ever really means anything, but...

I like that they’re vocal about (let’s be honest, here) how bad we all expect Jamarcus to continue to prove he is, and the coaches are getting their disclaimers out there early…

This is good news, nation. This is very good news. Al hears the collective voice of Raider Nation, and its displeasure with not putting our best foot forward. Russell will never start another game for this team. (Sorry xville!)

What is the deal with the JaMarcus Russell obsession

every single thing that happens with the Raiders gets linked back to Russell and how everybody assumes Al will start Russell week 1 when there is no evidence to support that and imo points to the opposite, eg Cable is still the coach, the OC is a cable guy, Herrera saying whoever the QB might be etc etc.

IF (this is a big if) JaMarcus arrives at camp in shape and performs as the best QB he should start, if its grad or someone else i believe the Raiders learnt their lesson from anointing a starter last year and will start the best guy.

and as much as he thinks its true its starting to seem like some others on here think the same thing – the universe does not revolve around JaMarcus Russell and a new OC does not mean Jroc will start next year.

"Mel Kiper has his opinion and I respect it. But what does it mean? My 9-year-old nephew can watch film and make an opinion. I think I value the opinion of scouts who get paid to make their opinions. It will carry me through my career. It will serve as motivation for me." - Mike Mitchell

I agree about learning from last year... Hue as OC is a good move...

Mr. Davis is not afraid to try whatever he thinks will help the Raiders win… JaMarcus rode the pine last year and still came in to games and was ineffective. So I agree with Ozraider… the anoiting of Russell as the starter will not happen… I actually hope that they end up signing a late rounder QB or an undrafted free agent QB that can be in the system for a couple, three years maturing behind Gradkowski/Frye/Russell/whoever is the starter for the next few years under Hue Jackson.

I also think the Raiders have learnt that they need a QB with a servicable understanding of the entire playbook and the desire to lead and succeed. Too bad Jeff Garcia is getting too old and beat up… I liked him since his CFL days up in Calgary (yes, I am a Canadian… the Raider Nation is everywhere!)… as he had the “fire in the belly…” and had no problem with taking responsibility for his mistakes and holding others accountable for theirs.

Count me in as one of those who Russell has to show he has what it takes to be the QB his physical skills suggest he could be… otherwise I will take a scrapper, a hustler, a firebrand, a in your face, wants to win kind of QB with a high energy level… with a kid with potential on the bench as the third QB…

by This does not end well on Jan 29, 2010 6:49 PM PST up reply actions

Well here's what it is

Russell is Davis’ chosen one. Al Davis is a prideful man and doesn’t want to admit when he’s wrong. Nor does he want to admit that Kiffin was right. It’s unlikely that Russell will renegotiate his contract. It’s equally unlikely that Davis will pay him that much money to sit on the bench. You don’t really expect the Raiders to come out right now and say that they’ve given up all hope on Russell do you? But you don’t really think they’re gonna alienate any future coach/player signings by anointing Russell right now. I don’t expect to see any true QB competition this year. If we resign Gradkowski, then I know that they’ll be willing to bench Russell early. If we don’t resign him or any QB and keep Losman, expect to see Russell play for at least 4 games (I use 4 games as it is 1/4 of the season and more than enough time to assess him), before being benched. And if that happens we can finally call TOD on his career.

Win, Lose, or Tie, Raiders til I die!

I think you're on the right track.

The re-signing of Gradkowski would tell us everything we need to know.

by Rusty23 on Jan 30, 2010 9:31 AM PST up reply actions

I also think the resigning of Gradkowski would be telling

and the fact that Cable is back and from all accounts he has been at the facility practically everyday since the end of the season is a good sign.

I just can’t see Cable or Davis going through what we did last year again (unless Russell does a full 180 over the offseason and earns the job fair and square) and its getting annoying having everyone report their opinion on what will happen as fact, and I think one thing that Al has proven again and again is that nobody know what he is going to do and for a prideful man he has done things before like cut deangelo hall etc that shows he is not afraid to do things like that if he is unhappy with the player so it is possibly just as likely that he will be cut before the season as it is he will start week 1 and until we see some evidence pointing either way (imo if anything the evidence has pointed against Russell being our starter) I think the assumptive comments in regards to Russell based on nothing but opinion are slightly redundant (unless you have spoken with Al and he has confided in you that Russell will start) and the fact it is clear that they still want to try and develop Russell does not mean he will start. When Russell starts getting the first team snaps in OTA’s or is named starter THEN I will start complaining.

Then why did Asomugha say this about Russell to the press this week?

"he has to understand that we’re gonna go as far as he takes us because he’s the quarterback of the team."

by Sons-of-Blanda on Jan 30, 2010 7:10 PM PST up reply actions

And it gives me no pleasure to contradict you but the truth (and this is not based

on sheer opinion but on on player statements, coaching acquisitions, Herrera statements, and other circumstantial evidence) is that Mike is closer to the truth than you are on this one. Russell is the anticipated starter – so prepare. I say he lasts 2 games and that’s his TOD (as far as the Raiders go) Mike thinks he’ll last through 4. Davis isn’t ready to give up yet and I expect a very O-line heavy draft and a FB too.

by Sons-of-Blanda on Jan 30, 2010 7:19 PM PST up reply actions

yeah i saw that quote from Nam and it did flag with me

but it is quite possible that he was talking retrospectively about when he was the starter or hypothetically about if he is the starter. I think the key to what you just said is that it is pretty much all circumstantial evidence and quotes that are open to interpretation.

I also cant really disagree with anything Mike said either and I see both points of view, i guess what i’m saying is lets wait and see and get pissed off about it if and when it happens.

(and don’t lie Sons im sure you got a little bit of pleasure out of that hahaha)

Mardi Gras "
Mardi Gras: MAMGA King Elexis I is JaMarcus Trenell Russell
By Roy Hoffman
January 31, 2010, 7:00AM

(Courtesy Isiah’s Photography Studio)JaMarcus Russell says football "has kept me out of trouble, let me travel all over the world, made me a very rich young man and brought me a lot of joy." His royal attire, including his crown, pays tribute to his years on the gridiron. The crown features a gold football with the No. 2 and a gold tiger, plus two angels representing his beloved uncles. MOBILE, Ala. — When JaMarcus Trenell Russell, quarterback for the Oakland Raiders, tells friends and teammates in California about Mardi Gras in Mobile, many of them, he said, are not familiar with Mobile’s carnival tradition.

Soon, the 6-foot-6- inch, 270-pound athlete will change that perception for all those who know him, including, surely, his thousands of fans.

"I’ll invite some of my teammates to the ball," he said.

Surely, they will be surprised — and educated — by seeing that Russell has exchanged his football helmet for a monarch’s crown.

"I knew it was special for my mother," said Russell of his becoming King Elexis I.

"This is like a fairy tale come true," said Zina Russell-Anderson, Russell’s mother, who had hoped to be in the MAMGA court in 1985, but was expecting a baby.

Mardi Gras special
Jan. 31, 2010

A 40-page special section devoted to the Mobile area’s 2010 season of revelry is included in the Sunday Press-Register, available wherever newspapers are sold and afterward while supplies last at the Press-Register building at 401 N. Water St. in Mobile.

Watch for continuing Mardi Gras coverage and read past articles, with photo galleries and parade videos, online at al.com."It was me," said Russell, who grew up to make good on his mother’s hope to be part of MAMGA’s royalty in some way.

He looks forward to sharing the coronation ceremony with his whole family, including his sister, JaLesia; his mother and stepfather, Zina Russell-Anderson and Martin Anderson; and his father and stepmother, Bobby Lloyd and Barbara.

Among his extended family are grandmothers Bernice Arnold Russell and Dorothy Todd Lloyd.

At his Grandmother Bernice’s home in Mobile is one of his Raiders jerseys, emblazoned with the No. 2, framed on a wall.

Football has been good to Russell. "It has kept me out of trouble," he said, "let me travel all over the world, made me a very rich young man and brought me a lot of joy."

For all these "blessings," as he calls them, he has dedicated his life, as well, to "giving back" to those less fortunate, starting his own foundation.

Russell attended Williamson High School, playing football under head coach Bobby Parrish. He started and never missed a game.

In his freshman year, the 14-year-old completed 180 of 324 passes for 2,683 yards and 20 touchdowns, helping lead Williamson to the state championship game.

As a junior, he passed for 1,850 yards and 17 touchdowns.

His best high school season was his senior year, completing 219 of 372 passes for 3,332 yards and 22 touchdowns.

As the result of his outstanding high school career, he garnered numerous awards.

Among his distinctions, he was named Alabama’s "Mr. Football" and SuperPrep Dixie offensive player of the year.

He was a standout in basketball, too.

"I thought I was going to be a pro basketball player," he said, looking back on his teenage years.

Colleges came calling. He signed with Louisiana State University and soon became starting quarterback.

He led the LSU Tigers to a 10-1 season and the SEC Western Division title, and a Top 5 ranking going into the SEC championship game.

At the end of the 2006 season, he was named to the all-SEC first team, and was named an honorable mention All-American by Sports Illustrated. Among his college football honors was being most valuable player in the 2007 Sugar Bowl.

He was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 NFL draft, taken by the Oakland Raiders.

Football, family and faith are strong themes in Russell’s life.

Two phrases are tattooed on his hands: "R.I.P. MIKE" and "R.I.P. Uncle Ray," both tributes to his beloved uncles, Mike Russell and Ray Ray Russell.

Both uncles passed away last spring.

Ray Ray Russell was well known in the region as a deejay on WBLX radio who succumbed, after a long illness, to congestive heart failure.

Russell speaks with love and admiration for his uncles.

Russell’s royal train is designed and executed by Maggie Outsey-Johnson and the staff of Eternal Elegance Inc. The garment pays homage to his years playing football. At its center are the letters "NFL."

Eternal Elegance Inc. describes the royal suit as "a military styled jacket made of black silk brocade with a woven Greek key design trimmed in front and around the collar in mink.

"The rhinestone trims, gold bugle beaded appliques and braidings of the train are repeated through the jacket. His black silk dupioni pants are trimmed on the sides with the silk brocade of the jacket and black and gold rhinestone trim."

His crown and scepter are designed by Tommy and Tanya Cain and executed by Jane and Jim Rhinewalt of Dynasty Collections Inc. of Mobile. According to Dynasty: "The base of the crown consists of four rows of large round crystals. The design of the crown features large tiffany, pear and rectangle shaped stones alternating with majestic gold lion heads encrusted with diamond eyes. Family birthstones are throughout the crown. The center back of the crown features the king’s monogram.

"A gold football with the No. 2 adorns the back of the crown, along with a gold LSU tiger, the year 2010, a cross made with family members’ birthstones and two angels representing uncles who were dear to him."

It's too bad

it’s so hard to find a job in that field. At least around here. I’d have to most likely start at help desk but it’s a pay cut and a it’s hard to move up from there. What I need to do is buckle down and study for my LPI.

or you could

try and join the cast of 24! (I love this show—and the new season is the best so far.)

NEVER

That show is the worst thing to air on TV since the original Knight Rider.

I like at least a little bit of realism. No way in hell could any of that ever happen w/in 24 hours. In fact, after House, I jump for the remote to shut the channel off just so I don’t have to see 1 second of the poor excuse to our intelligence called 24.

Plus I don’t want to be an actor.

Right now, I am reading "True spy stories" at bed time

It’s a very difficult read for someone like me, b/c these are mostly boys’ stories. But the psychology of spyhood fascinates me, so I keep reading. Anyway, in terms of realism, the stuff that went on during the cold war is similar to what we see in 24.

Speaking of spies, some time ago I saw a very depressing 60’s movie with Richard Burton, “The Spy Who Came In From The Cold,” and the main character there was somewhat similar to Kiefer’s character in terms of damage.

But back to 24, in the new season there is this female Jack Bauer, Renee Walker, who beats Jack with respect to damage, active and passive.

I’m not talking about the plot. In fact I talked about the time limit before:

No way in hell could any of that ever happen w/in 24 hours.

What a talented man he is.

I’m kinda offended (not really) about stereotyping spy stories to boy stories. It was my grandmother actually who got me interested in reading/writing (not published, just some stupid shit for school and personal enjoyment) police and spy stories.
