I've sensed this was a long time coming

and it was just a matter of time. I don’t even think a victory against Baltimore would’ve changed that.

do I agree with it, if in fact there is any truth to it ?(I believe there is some). I’m not sure; I do know it hasn’t been working, and the organization always needs a scapegoat.

I believe the players that said they liked Tom. I think KAZ13R said Tom possesses exactly some of the qualities Tom has, but in today’s league, the patience Tom has demonstrated with mediocrity has no place. There must be an immediacy to the moves a team makes, and be it Tom’s fault or not, his record will ultimately speak for itself when Jamarcus Russell and the worst passing attack in history is all but forgotten.

Right now is the right time; Please, please, please, let it be the right guy.

Once again, I believe Tom would’ve been at least over .500 with even decent play at qb, in terms of the occasional td pass and better protection of the ball, and should never have been calling plays, but that point is now moot.

The media always speculates

but until Al does something it is just that, speculation. Al has a big problem because the fans have turned against the team. Replacing Cable with Fassell or Gilbright will do nothing to make that right. Starting next year with Russell as the QB will not bring people back to the stadium. The fans have turned on Russell and one win will not make a difference, the fans will not flock to Oakland if the season starts next year with Russell starting. Indifference is the worst thing that can happen to a team and Al has let that happen, for that he is to blame.

Round Up the Usual Suspects

If Al Davis does end up firing Tom Cable we can expect a list eerily similar to the ones we discussed when Kiffin was on his way out and even last season when there was speculation that Cable would be replaced.

Expect names like Fassel, Billick, Trestman, and Gilbride to come up. Don’t expect names like Shanahan, Cowher, or Gruden to be included.

In the end, so long as Al Davis is still running the show, the list of people who are actually willing to jump into the hornets nest that is the Raiders front office/coaching staff will be short and unassuming.

I'm in the smallest of minorities, but I'm still a big supporter of JaMarcus Russell.

Fassel, Billick, Trestman, and Gilbride

Why would these guys want to come to the Raiders??? If cable is fired and i hope he isnt we’ll probably have a no-name coach. And start this cycle all over again. I want the Raiders to keep Cable and start Gradcowski (?) and improve our running game on both sides of the ball. I feel like if we get a new coach then thats just gonna make everything worse. This past 2 years i do feel like we’ve taken a little step forward but not only bring in a new coach but a new coaching staff will take us 2 big steps back.

a little step in the right direction?

look at the direction our offensive stats have gone since cable over took kiffin and tell if its the right direction. we have went totally backwards in offense and ended up at 5-11, AGAIN!

by rodeosnake12 on Jan 4, 2010 12:32 PM PST up reply actions

i havent looked at stats

But i have noticed that we arent completly blown out of games by the end of the first half. Sure we got blown away in some games but not like last year. Like the Baltimore game we are in contention to win games even against good teams. Dont get me wrong we have a long way to go but i feel like Cable gives us the best chance to improve. Plus i could give a rats ass about stats if the Raiders win.

speculation

If Mercury News didn’t come up with bogus sources (I doubt it did), then either the anonymous sources truthfully reflect Al’s actual thoughts on the subject—in which case Al may not be quite right in the head (I am a very soft-spoken person)—, or they say what Al instructs them say at this point—“jawohl, mein Fuhrer,” heil opacity).
This is the quote from the article: “Davis’ decision, the sources said, will be predicated more upon Cable’s inability to coax more points out of an offense that Cable directed and his refusal to stick with Russell beyond nine games.”

if the alternative is one of the aforementioned above names, "the usual suspects" as they were

I’ll take him, but get Gilbride as OC, or someone similar and, hopefully as pointed out, willing.

I think you’re wrong on this one, however. Just a hunch. I believe all the hoopla, thus far, is just speculation and unnamed and unreliable sources. I’ve just felt his days have been numbered for quite some time, and Al does have a history of impatience, as does the rest of the league.

This is getting to feel like one of those times I’m getting my hopes up, only to be summarily let down, once again crushed by the cruel Football Gods… and somehow, the worst case scenario even I hadn’t foreseen unfurls.

Here we go again, and right when I was feeling positive about a few things!

I think this is just saying it will take place on that Friday when they meet.

BTW, Al may not even fire Cable at all, now that everyone is talking about it. He seems to have this idea of himself as the maverick and newsmaker, what news will he make if he does exactly what the media have been saying he’ll do?

We have to keep cable

The team played hard for him through out the whole year. they didnt quit like they have on past coaches.(shell and turner). And besides all that there really isnt a good candidate out there dont tell me your excited about gilbride and fassell if they were any good other teams would have hired them already they have been available for years now only our organiztion sees them as big time names we can land. Cable will get better as a coach he is learning with the team. Lets not forget this was a rookie season for him too

i think cable should come back and we hire an OC

I’m not fullly up to date with OC candidates but I wouldn’t mind seeing Jim Zorn come on as OC and he has a great rep for working with QB’s and i dont think changing systems is a good idea.

Cable should only go if we have someone like Chucky already committed to coming in.

yeah that would be a good hire

Gradkowski looked great late in games when we had to throw the ball and spread out the receivers as well which is obviously what Leach does to the max, I would love to see a creative hire like that.

and maybe a few hours in a closet might sort out JaMarcus :)

Everytime AD fires a coach, the candidates get worse

There is no reason to expect even the usual candidate list will come to the team. Unless Al has a slam dunk ready to go (Gruden or Harbaugh), then we’ll continue to see how far down the coaching flagpole the Raiders HC job has gone. There’s probably HS coaches who might tell the Raiders, ‘thanks, but no thanks’. The franchise centerpieces will remain JaGantus Russell & Dead Hands Bey. In the second half of the season, w/o Russell, the team at least had become watchable again. Taking another step back is counterproductive, as it has been after firing Callahan, Turner, Shell, Kiffin whatever. No change at the top, means no change to the bottom line.

Fire Cable

It would accept the Cable sacrifice if we get a solid GM who wants to bring his guy as coach, and than, the new coach would bring his OC. Bottom line, JR needs to compete for the job (if he’s still around and renegotiates his contract) against Bruce, and even Frye or another vet. The circus can’t go on.

That’s right, I’m talking about Mike Leach.

We can do this, people! Just imagine: JaMarcus throwing for 6,000 yards! Louis Murphy grabbing 170 catches! Final scores of 84-72!

Interesting interview

on the Raider show this afternoon. Cable had met with Al in the morning and from what I could see Cable was rather upbeat which suggested to me at least that he felt he would not be fired next week. He did mention that as they always do after the season is over, all the coaches get together and they go through every player on the team. Then next Monday they all sit down with Al and go over everything with Al. Cable also made the observation that he wore too many hats this year, didn’t delegate enough and would be open to an offensive coordinator if it would help the team.
If I had to make a guess Cable will probably stay as head coach but will have to give up his play calling responsibilities. The thing you have to remember is that if Al dumps Cable he has to go through the minority hiring sham they all go through, and although he will still get whoever he wants, does Al really want to go through that again. Al surely cannot be blind to the fact that this team bonded together and played hard for Cable. As always, it is just a matter of not having a QB.

by Laoren on Jan 4, 2010 6:25 PM PST reply actions

Did Cable say why jamarcus was not at the morning meeting?

The report I read (re the interview you cite) says Cable quoted jr’s “personal reasons” for not attending the meeting. Indeed, yesterday at the game, I saw jr’s teammates shunning him, esp. after he fumbled. I, being a soft-hearted female and a mother, felt really bad for poor jr at that point, but at the same time felt joy, b/c the guy has the mentality of a kindergarten intern. So, in short and in brief—what did Cable actually say about that?

by Spirals galore on Jan 4, 2010 7:10 PM PST up reply actions

You had me nodding agreement until your conclusion which I think misses the point

We have a QB, it’s Gradkowski. Moreover, when Grad couldn’t play it was Frye who started and played only until he got hurt. So, if Cable stays, there’s no reason to conclude the JaMarcus will be considered next season’s starter. The facts are plain, we do not have the linemen to either open holes for our decent RBs or provide sufficient time for our QBs to set up and read / and for the 3 or 4 receiver routes to be carried out AND on D not to get pushed back into the 2nd line or to provide an acceptable pass rush without augmentation of the blitz.

Cable will stay

and he will bring in an OC.

I like Gilbride if he is available. He knows how to utilize a power running back and then bring in speedy back which we have. Toss in a few passes and we have an offense.

As long as the team doesn’t have marching orders to re-start Ja-cant hang onto the ball the team will continue improving.

If Cable is fired, then this team will be screwed for the next decade

The Raiders will start from zero if Cable is fired. It will be every other year over again, then the next coach won’t be good enough for Al, and it will continue. He’ll have Russell as the qb, and be in denial thinking that he is the answer. No coach will be able to make JaDumbo a good qb because he doesn’t have it in him. Our good players will see that their boss(Al) will never learn from his mistakes, and the first chance they get, they will bolt in free agency to a franchise with stability. Nobody will want to come to our team, and we will continue to stink and be the most lost team in the league.

by duballers23 on Jan 4, 2010 11:51 PM PST reply actions

Only if Al had any sort of common sense

This team really is not that far away from being a playoff team. If he filled some of the teams holes in this years draft and off season, then this team would be on its way to contention. Here are some very obvious moves to make that would be easy to make if Al used his brain. Keep the coach, re-sign Seymour, re-sign and start Gradkowski, re-sign Howard and Morrison, re-sign Frye, cut Russell, draft an offensive tackle in the first round, get a good defensive tackle in the 2nd round, get a good mlb(Daryl Washington TCU) in the 3rd round so that they can move Morrison to olb, draft a good og/c/cb in the third, and hire good staff members(oc) to help Cable. I don’t think those moves would be very hard to make at all. Instead Al will do the opposite of all that was said.

by duballers23 on Jan 5, 2010 12:18 AM PST reply actions

Cable made one more interesting observation

in his interview, went something like this, we have to find out if we are running the right schemes on defense, are we trying to fit square pegs in round holes. I took it to mean that the linebackers are not being utilized properly. Other than Scott did anyone see either Morrison or Howard make a play all year, an interception, a fumble recovery, a blocked pass, anything? Surely the Raiders were last in the league in turnovers, interceptions etc.

al davis wont get rid of a his QB. history says that al davis will stick with jamarcus and either force cable to work with him or fire cable. al davis argument is that vince young, drew brees, and eli manning all were able to turn things around.

in my on opinion, we need better line play! without gallery, henderson was getting burnt badly, and cornell green could not handle orakpo and he false starts on the run plays that force us to play pass then cant hold a block… so wtf???… and if cable is a “Oline guy” then whos responsible. its not hacket or tolner… i know that..

what history, the 08’ firing over kiffin, thats history. Yea Al tried russell another year in his defense to russell over kiffin, but look at the last 1st round QB Al took and its history. its kinda ironic actually. Marinovich sat behind Shroeder for his rookie year and played briefly in one game that year and looked good, kinda like russell. then after a 0-3 start in came TM and put up the same numbers as russell did only in 7 games, 49% comp. 5 tds 9 picks, actually a little better than russell and went 3-4 as a starter but still sucked, like russell. we had a former Olineman as our coach in shell, like cable, and Davis canned TM and stayed with shell after that, so who knows whats gonna happen but " OL AL" might suprise us after all, if this history repeats itself!

Its Just Facts ESPN is Powerful So sometimes they put up a story, they make sh.it up to

Make the story Deeper like the Cable Incident, and hurt the fanbase by deceiving them with lies or misguided attempts to make the story bigger which pisses people off. Maybe they Dont do it often but still when they do it just BS. I Doubt they know if Al Is prepared thats BS… its just speculation. They Are NOT out to get the Raiders ,we know that. I Like ESPN but I don’t find them all that Credible.

ESPN

We’re in the minority, then, I think. I enjoy most of their programming. I even listen to Colin Cowherd and Dan Patrick in my car sometimes, particularly when Gary Radnich isn’t on KNBR. Yes, I get tired of them talking up SEC football and Big East basketball along with the popular teams, but those teams are popular because of huge fan bases and that’s why they cater to them and so I understand.

I sometimes watch ESPN for recaps and in-depth game analysis. Not much more than that. I sometimes catch watch first take with skip and whomever they bring to debate with him, but they only discuss those rumors.

I agree. We need a better OC and a GM. The players respond positively with Cable. They want to play their hearts out for him and for that he shouldn’t be let go. Turner and Shell didn’t have that. I’m glad to not be a Denver fan and that joke of a HC they got now. Why did they fire Shanahan again?

Nothing like wrapping up a sh**y season

with a bender in Vegas. I stopped watching the Raiders earlier this season because I couldn’t stand watching JaGantus Russell at qb. As a Raider fan I still followed them and hoped they won, and once fat boy was benched I was able to watch the team from beginning to end. I can’t take Russell anymore and I can’t take another stupid coaching change. I can’t take Al Davis’ decision making, and I stopped going to the games this year.

I hope Russell had a great time at the Palms with all the money he’s stolen from all us fans. JR is the new Commitment to Excellence, the face of the franchise, and everthing wrong with the Oakland Raiders. At least if I decide to become a Niners fan, I can get the Michael Crabtree jersey I was robbed of as a Raiders fan. It’s almost like the team refuses to hit bottom, but stays frustratingly circling above it for the past 7+ years.

Converting to a Niner fan?!? Crabtree Jersey?!?

It’s not the end of the world bro’. I’m sure there’s someone out there that cares for you, just hang in there…(you didn’t hear this from me but) I heard some niner fans partake in man on man type stuff!

GOGO,

agree, what happens in vegas stays in vegas! maybe jrust can take the las vegas locos to a 2 and 7 season and let us head to better days. back in the day, it was no thing for old raiders to go party, do a shot of crown and a snort of white shit, but that was after WINNING seasons and playoffs. this guy is a terd and if this is true, he just saved cables job and our hopeless future!

Might be true your thoughts

Q: Do you thin you and Al on the same page regarding the QB situation?

Cable: I do, because his words to me were, ‘You’re the coach. Make the decision.’
