Know Your Enemy: San Diego Chargers

Hey everybody. It's been a while since I've been around these parts, so allow me to introduce myself once more. My name is John Gennaro and I am the Managing Editor of Bolts from the Blue. In SB&P-talk, imagine me as a less-talented saint.

Anyways, I am here to play my part as a "Chargers expert" and answer any questions you guys might have leading up to Sunday's matchup. A couple of things you could do for me in the meantime:

  1. Please Rec this post so that it stays at the top of the site in the "Recommended FanPosts" box for the rest of the week.
  2. Please keep the trash talk to a minimum. I'm not here to start fights, and I won't be responding to any attempts at trolling.
  3. If someone could do something like this over at BFTB, our community always enjoys it and is greatly appreciative of it.

Put your questions in the comments below, and I'll be around sporadically to answer them.

Yeah

In their defense, they’ve played in the 2 loudest stadiums in the league. However, there is that fear that suddenly the team can’t win on the road.

How do you expect the forced switch at safety to effect your D?

Not a clue

We’re not even sure who is playing SS anymore. It could be Weddle (with Paul Oliver playing FS), it could be Oliver, it could be rookie Darrell Stuckey. They all bring something different to the table. Knowing Ron Rivera, I’d say he’ll stick in whatever guy he thinks is the most ready and play the D exactly the same way.

All three guys have the potential to play at the same level Gregory has been playing at. However, if the front 7 play as well as they have been playing the Safety really shouldn’t come into effect that often.

Gregory is the savvy veteran, but Oliver is bigger and more athletic.

This is a depth problem more than anything.

Ive read you guys have 3 healthy Lbs on the roster at the moment

you guys run a 4-3 how will this affect your game?
why is it that your offense is still doing well without VJ
how is mathews doing?(i had him winning offensive rookie of the year)
biggest concern for your guys? im assuming special teams play
how strong is the pass rush?

Couple of corrections

The Chargers have plenty of healthy LBs, they’ve just had an issue with OLBs going down (Merriman, English, Tucker). They still have Phillips, Applewhite, Lang, Wilson, Burnett, Cooper, Siler and Holt. Also, they run a 3-4….not a 4-3.

Shawne Merriman’s health will effect the game the same way it did against the Cardinals. The team is better when he’s in there and he might play. If he doesn’t, Antwan Applewhite and Brandon Lang will have to hold down the fort.

why is it that your offense is still doing well without VJ?
Because taking the #2 receiver off of a team with a great QB isn’t going to effect much. Also, the bigger reason is because the team has bolstered the running game and become more balanced.

how is mathews doing?
Great when he’s actually on the field. His 4.7 yards per carry is higher than Charger fans have seen in a few years. However, he was pulled in the game against the Chiefs after fumbling the ball, was injured against the Jaguars and missed the Seahawks game. Because of that, and Mike Tolbert’s success running the ball, they’re taking it easy with him and almost easing him back into the starter’s role.

biggest concern for your guys? im assuming special teams play
You are assuming correctly, even though it looked better against Arizona.

how strong is the pass rush?
Surprisingly strong. Shaun Phillips has been an animal, and the entire defense gets about twice as good when Merriman is in there. 9 sacks against the Cardinals was not a fluke, the defensive line eats up blockers and Ron Rivera sends lots of perfectly-timed blitzes. Expect pressure.

Bolts from the Blue - Destroying your opinions with facts.

by John Gennaro on Oct 5, 2010 1:45 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

Nine sacks is semi-flukish, or at least inflated by Horse Balls and the rook.

Otherwise, I agree. Between Merriman, Phillips and Applewhite, the pass rush is solid. The DL is better than last year’s, with pretty much the same personnel playing at a higher level. Cam Thomas is a tank, but he can’t get active because the veterans in front of him are too good. The coverage has also been good, which doesn’t hurt. Burnett-Siler is the new Edwards-Godfrey on the inside, Weddle is the real deal, the CB squad is consistent and reliable, and we have a number of SS’es who range from mediocre to decent, though you won’t see the best one (Gregory).

The Chargers’ run game is a whole lot better than it’s been since ‘07. Mathews is no LaDainian, because he’s the best there’s ever been, but he’s a load, and his balance is excellent. Tolbert and Mathews are both bruising hammer-type RBs, and the OL is better at run-blocking than it’s been since ‘06; it’s not ‘06-level good, but then again you can’t stack the box this year.

Nah, even if the Raiders’ pass defense does its job, they need the crowd to force 1st/15 and mussed-up plays, and they need two fluke TDs in any of the three phases of the game.

By "fluke"

I mean “outlier play,” not “un-earned TD.” A really long score, an improbable series of successes, a pick-six* or a ST TD. All of those are earned, none of them are reliable. We’ve given up way too much of that stuff, and very little else.

An un-earned TD in my opinion is one caused by a ref mistake or an illegal play that doesn’t get called; that’s not what I’m talking about (or, rather, is a very small fraction of what I’m talking about).

In 4 games, the Chargers have given up...
  • 2 kickoff returns for TD
  • 1 punt return for TD
  • 1 fumble return for TD
  • 1 58-yard TD run
  • 1 TD off a fumble return into the red zone
  • 2 FGs off interceptions
  • 1 FG off a fumble
  • 1 FG off a blocked punt
  • 2 other TDs (53 and 41 yards)
  • 1 other FG

The Chargers figure out how to tackle on teams and hold on to a football, they become very hard to beat.

You guys have an easy schedule for a a team that went to the playoffs last year. I mean, our schedule is at least as tough as yours, and we finished 5-11. We got the Steelers, and you got Cincinnati.

There are only two differences.

2) You host Miami, we host New England.

A wash?

Pittsburgh is a much tougher team than the Bengals. New England is not the team they used to be, barely getting past Buffalo, and now they have no Randy Moss who was tied for the lead in TD receptions for them.

But more importantly, even if it had been a wash, we finished 5-11, did you? No, you guys got an easy schedule, and if you don’t make the Super Bowl run this year, then it may never happen during Rivers’ tenure.

Lurked on BFTB before .. From what I saw in your comments, you’re a very knowledgeable San Diego fan. I live in Oceanside and work in San Diego. A good majority of the people here have no idea what they’re talking about. (Half the San Diego fans I talked to today didn’t even have the slightest idea we were playing this week.) They go into hiding when the team loses, and berate me when they get a win. I feel a lot of the fan base is fair-weather fans, but here and there you have some actual die-hards. I know every fan base has them, maybe I just see it more living down here.

Anyhow, question wise .. This is what comes to mind:

-Will Tolbert be starting again this week? He has stepped it up in the absence of Matthews and to my knowledge has not fumbled. Do you believe he will eventually beat out Matthews at some point, or share the work load?

-Steve Gregory has a four game suspension. You’re defense is looking thin. Larry English won’t be playing the next three games, I read Jyles Tucker was out (not sure how much he contributes to your defense). Shawne Merriman, who hasn’t been doing that well to my knowledge, is he still having problems with his calf? I read on ESPN that there were only three healthy linebackers as of now. Do you pick someone up seeing as you’re a 3-4 defense? And do you think that this is going to hurt you in anyway (of course it will to an extent, I’m just wondering how?)

-San Diego is coming off of a monster game vs. The Cardinals. Do you think San Diego takes the Raiders lightly seeing as we’re 1-3, and the Chargers have won the last 13 games?

-San Diego has lost every away game so far. Crowds and special teams have been a big factor in their losses. I didn’t watch the game Sunday (as it was blacked out) .. Obviously the Chargers fixed the special teams play, but are they having their starters do special teams still?

Just some questions off the top of my head. For my sake, I don’t mind if San Diego keeps getting blackouts (I don’t have to put their game on the smaller TV for the other people at my house, haha.) This will be a decisive moment for my Raiders. I believe this a MUST win. I did my best to keep this post as civil as possible with a Charger fan, especially one who showed no disrespect. Your answers are much appreciated.

Tolbert’s first start was against Seattle and he looked pretty bad in the first half, and actually did fumble. I think he was trying too hard. Ever since he’s been fantastic. With Mathews nursing a bad ankle and elbow, I think the plan is to go with a 60/40 split of Tolbert/Mathews on the ground. Once Mathews gets healthier and gets more confidence (fumbles were an issue for him in his first 2 games), that should turn into a 70/30 split with Mathews taking 70% of the carries.

I read on ESPN that there were only three healthy linebackers as of now. Do you pick someone up seeing as you’re a 3-4 defense? And do you think that this is going to hurt you in anyway (of course it will to an extent, I’m just wondering how?)
Goodness, that’d be scary playing a 3-4 with only 3 LBs. As per usual, ESPN is wrong. I believe what they were trying to say is that the Chargers only have 3 healthy OLBs, and they’re still wrong. Phillips, Applewhite and Lang are probably who they’re thinking of, but they’re discounting James Holt (who played some at OLB last season) because he’s listed as a ILB. They’re also ignoring the fact that Merriman might be playing in this game after missing the Cardinals game with a calf injury. The team added more depth today by signing OLB Cyril Obiozor from their practice squad, as well.

The lack of health and depth at OLB could obviously have an effect on the pass-rush, but guys like Applewhite and Lang have talent and could really impress some people now that they’re getting on the field. Phillips and the defensive line have been doing enough to be an above-average pass rushing team already, and Ron Rivera has been using his ILBs and Safeties as blitzers up the middle as well.

San Diego is coming off of a monster game vs. The Cardinals. Do you think San Diego takes the Raiders lightly seeing as we’re 1-3, and the Chargers have won the last 13 games?
They’re not stupid and they don’t have short memories. They know better than to take the Raiders lightly after what happened last season.

San Diego has lost every away game so far. Crowds and special teams have been a big factor in their losses. I didn’t watch the game Sunday (as it was blacked out) .. Obviously the Chargers fixed the special teams play, but are they having their starters do special teams still?
Yes. A lot of people are concerned by this. Jammer, Tolbert, Cason, Naanee and Gregory were all a part of the coverage unit.

I hope Tolbert starts

I watched the Cardinals game again last night. Tolbert isn’t just a guy who can fill in for an injured starter, the guy is a BEAST. He isn’t the fastest guy on he field, but he’s quick, nimble, and has good hands. He’s physical and… he’s HUGE! I think, overall, Ryan Mathews will be a better running back, but he’s definitely not as complete as Tolbert is yet. I just love Tolbert. The guy just looks like he can’t be a RB in the NFL. And when you watch him run, you just can’t deny the fact that the 250lb bowling ball is legit RB.
The Raiders always play the Chargers tough, especially at home. So I don’t think anyone in the organization will take them lightly. You can pretty much throw the records out at this point. It’s a divisional game, and I’m sure it’s personal, too. No one has forgotten the beating the Chargers took on the first game of the season in 2009, even though we eeked out a W.
I’ll let John handle the rest of the questions.

What is the general feeling of fans regarding the VJ situation?

Do the majority want a trade, only a trade for a first, or will they just be happy to get him back? It certainly seems like he is coming back at this point. Right?

by Rich Langford on Oct 5, 2010 11:45 PM PDT reply actions

The majority want a trade because they know he’s NOT coming back at any point. Not unless he gets new agents and comes in groveling.

Depending on who you’re talking to, the Chargers will be getting back a 3rd round pick as compensation for losing VJax as a free agent….unless a new CBA agreement changes that rule. Either way, Jackson seems content to spend a year or two sitting out and waiting for someone to talk themselves into giving a big contract to a guy with only one or two great seasons and a long record off the field.

The fans aren’t too upset at the team. They understand why they’re doing the things they’re doing, and in general the smart Chargers fans know what the team is doing is right (even if it hurts the 2010 team). The real culprits in this dumb situation seem to be VJ’s agents, who are using him (along with Revis) to get as much money as they can before a potential lockout.

I think that's the word from the V-Jax camp
word is, AJ isn’t letting deals get done. He had contracts negotiated with other teams

The agents have made a number of miscalculations. They claimed to have a deal “philosophically” agreed to with other teams, but the Chargers must not have liked what they were getting in trade. AJ is all business – a deal gets done for the right price and the floor is a 3rd (that is what the Chargers get if V-Jax does not sign the reduced tender).

The Agents some how think V-Jax is a URFA, he’s not. They want top dollar, long term, guaranteed money AND the new team has to give some high draft choices to the Chargers. The price is just too high (for two teams and counting). The only way out is for V-Jax to significantly back away from his demands.

This Time

will probably be different. They lowered his salary to last years, so he only gets like 600k for the year, he is out at least five or six games now, so around 400k for the season. He is in line for a 6-8 mil/year contract when he goes free agent, so it doesn’t make much sense for him to risk injury for that much. Might be a trade if some team gets desperate enough, or we may see him walk and get the 3rd/4th round comp pick. It could be the CBA changes and we end up with nothing. Oddly now that the season is on and the offense looks to be rolling the fan base doesn’t seem too concerned about him anymore.

This is a must fucking win.

keys to the game

Pressure Rivers. The Chargers go as he does. If he gets time to throw, he will kill you. He’s too good. Gates will get his catches and Tolbert/matthews should combine for about 125. But we need to make sure Sproles (who has been a non-factor this year) Floyd, Nenee, Turner, etc dont kill us w/ big plays. Limit the big plays in general.

Chargers defense is shit to begin with and their depth is limited this week. We can score on them and will need too to win. I assume the winner of this game will have no less than 24 points. We HAVE TO score td’s in the red zone. If we settle for fg’s- we lose.

We can run on them and will need to eat up clock. We need to utilize Miller on short-mid routes over the middle. Cason and Jammer are decent corners but no one can stay w/ Miller. Same as the mis-match Gates has w/ us. Considering DHB is DHB and Murphy is less than 100%, Miller seems are only viable option to move the cahins consisitently aside from our running game.

Thats how I see it…

Fuck the chargers. I pray Rivers knee gets blown out

Chargers defense is shit to begin with

Yes, one of the top defenses in the league this year IS shit. You’re absolutely correct.

We can run on them

Top 10 run defense vs. Top 10 run offense. Not really a guaranteed thing.

Im sure its just a coincidence

That the chargers have the number 1 rated defense. What a “shit” defense.. If he can name me 7 starters on the D i would be impressed.

Shaun Phillips... who else? who are your DT's, DE's? How's English doing? Your LB's?

Cesaire? Castillo? Garay a Cleveland Brown 6th round pick? Weak D-line imo.
Jammer is ok, so is Weddle. Cason is also pretty good. But your LB’s and D-line has no relevant names. (except for Phillips and Merriman)

The DL is deceptively good.

Travis Johnson and Luis Castillo are bona-fide butt-kicker DEs. Jacques Cesaire is a good situational player, though not much of a run-blocker. Ogemdi Nwagbuo is a highly versatile backup. Nobody thought Antonio Garay would be the absolute answer at Nose Tackle, but there he is, and he does everything you’d want, collapsing the pocket and stuffing midfield runs.

Either Cam “Baby Godzilla” Thomas or Vaughn “Jamaican Bacon” Martin may be active. Thomas is a studly run-stuffer NT; not too athletic, but totally immovable, and Martin is a 320-lb DE who runs a 4.9 40.

The LB problems are also overstated. Yes, they’re down to 4x OLB, but that includes their three best guys, Merriman (finally back to full health), Phillips and Antwan Applewhite. The ILB corps is similarly thin-but-good.

He's playing for his job.

He was a beast against Jacksonville. He practiced fully the last two days. He’ll turn it on doubletime this week.

Siler is doubtful. That’s not happy. But Burnett and Cooper are solid, and Applewhite can play ILB on running downs.

theres a few noteworthy

castillo obviously earns his millions, and cesaire does what he does very well, but without phillips the linebacking corp just isnt the same. none too sure about d line other than castillo, but merriman has noticably lost a step and quite a bit of ferocity he once had
side note i love how people talk trash saying how much merriman sacked that jafatass brusselsprout last year, but cmon guys he basically sacked himself.
the secondary has a bit of a nack for big plays but theyre usually gimmes.
if gradkowski can move around in the pocket and get the ball out quickly (his specialty btw) then he should have a big game in theory.

Whos talking shit, just giving my 2 cents on the game.

Stats at this point of the season are essentially worthless. To small a sample. Also the special teams td’s took away offensive possesions to further skew the stats.

IMO the Chargers line is shit. Your backers are avg. Phillips is the only guy that scares me. Cooper when healthy is decent. A bunch of nobodies after them.

The Chargers remind me of the Colts of a couple years ago. Relying on their offense to basically out score the other team. I dont see the chargers winning many 13-10 type games any time soon

Oh I hate the Raiders...

I won’t forget that Al Davis killed Gene Klein … I’ve just watched too many seasons where the Raiders have absolutely steam rolled the Chargers. It all comes around. I know they’ll get it together again at some point.

Heck looking at it one paper last summer, I though 2010 was gonna be a good year for the Hoard. IMO there’s still time for the Raiders to have a great season… How many division games have they played? Zero. On any given Sunday, and especially when you play twice a year.

Oh we've got a whole list

How many words do the Eskimos have to describe snow? Our rookie RB Mathews plays WOW, so the Hoard works for him.

Though I think his toon is one of those Hoard guys… Look out we’ve got another spleer agent in the fold! Do you guys remember Steve Ortmeyer?

GG Raiders

A totally desearved victory. The Chargers knew they had problems with ST. The Chargers did not fix those problems. Two break downs up the A gap! Really?!? The Raiders really put out on team today. And this win (unlike the KC/SD game) did not come down to a few fluke plays. It wasn’t pretty, but the Raiders won the game.

See ya in December! I am sure by then the Raiders will be much healthier than they were today.

by Trendsearcher on Oct 10, 2010 6:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Very gracious of you. Rivers and Floyd/Gates make your team scary. Many of those

throws were impossible to defend really beautiful and it would have been worse if we hadn’t raised the pressure … once you solve your STs issues we will have to be even better to come out on top in Dec.

Two losses, one where the team allowed to kickoff returns and

one where they allowed two block punts. That has to be hard to swallow! Still, the Chargers are a scary team and Rivers? My god, I love to rip on him, but he is amazing. Thanks for stopping by. Hopefully the December game means something to both teams.

Not all Raider fans are crude, Hun-like barbarians… Okay, that’s a lie, but the point is after our game with the Texans, a guy came from their forum and congratulated us on a good game, was a good sport, so we ought to extend the courtesy. I’m sure all of us at SBP look forward to our next game in December, and hopefully both teams will bring the same intensity and keep the mistakes behind. This game couldn’t help but remind one of the classic Raider-Charger games in the Dan Fouts era.

Rocky's. Not even close.

Hodad’s kind of has a fun atmosphere, but their burgers are just okay (kinda soggy), and it’s always crowded. Rocky’s has much better food, though it too is usually packed (worst-kept secret in town, and kind of small to boot). The only drawback to Rocky’s is that it’s not really close to the action. Of course, if you’re just looking for a quiet walk along the bay, that’s cool. But Hodad’s is close to all the hodad bars and the OB pier, so it might make for a better experience.

That is, a more home-like experience, coming from the Bay
But Hodad’s is close to all the hodad bars and the OB pier, so it might make for a better experience.

OB is hippie-town, or at least it was several years ago. Now it’s a little clubbier, like a friendlier, pot-scented, less “fashionable” version of MB/PB. Rocky’s is in southeast PB, on Ingraham St. (connecting PB, MB and OB via bridges), kind of adjacent to a residential area, but on the busy Ingraham St., not far south of the PB strip.
