Sorry to say this but it’s true.
Think of the last two games. o.k. Seattle. How many yards did he get on that tipped twice ball ? Lots. I think there was a long screen to Mcfadden that day also. McFadden and M. Reece broke some serious YAC in that game too thanks to a fallen down duo of db’s on the DHB catch.
Now take the KC game. Ford pretty much saved his ass and the win.
Take the ball to make it to OT that Ford had to pretty much come back and fall to his knees to get. And the Interception that Ford saved Campbell from taking. And if Ford doesnt dive for that last catch in OT that play doesnt happen.
I hate to think with the glass half empty but all those plays saved Campbells ass.
Oh and one more…when our DB intercepted the pass to the endzone before the half after he threw an INT right before the half. Even if they would have taken the 3 at the half it’s a different game. Campbell will fail.

Im not on either QBs side. Neither of them has shown the leadership qualities consistently enough for me to actually back them. Sure theyre both the 1 and 2 qbs for oakland but I expect, better yet demand a QB who is a leader and not afraid to fail. By throwing that ball in traffic with 3 defenders. Im not surprised the stud Polamalu picked it off. Thats what hes known to do and why I wanted him on Oaklands side. It doesnt excuse Grad for the throw or make it less of a bad throw than JC who had the pick in his own 20. Theyre both bad throws coming off two bad offensive plays.
Yes Bruce showed and gave us hope last year with his gritty play, but it takes more than that to be a winner. Vick and Sanchez are showing that this year. Jets just took the lead and the win on the game winning drive. Vick, changed his approach to the game and had one of the best games a qb has ever had in the history of the NFL.
We may not be able to get these type of QBs but Oakland can still win in this league without them. Its been proven with baby manning winning with the Giants and the qb for the ravens in the early 00s. As long as you have a decent QB who can get the receiver the ball to make the play you have a chance. This team is there. The D is solid but the offense let everyone down today with the calls being way too one dimensional and not fitting against a team that is blitz heavy like Pitt.

Lot of young talent on this team. You’ve seen it multiple times last 2 seasons, so it’s THERE. There is also, however, no LEADER here. What we have are some damn good players that “show up” badassed every once in a while. Is it just weak coaching? Or is it just the lack of an actual “field general”? Honestly, do any of these guys even like each other personally? Do they even know each others 1st names? Does ANYONE want THEIR TEAM to win? Or is it all about padding personal stats to justify a pay raise or a trade? Remember Brady bitching out teammates last week? It doesnt matter if he was or wasnt. This offense has not stepped it up all game. The playcalling is atrocious and the Wrs havent helped either Qb by dropping almost all the passes. Only reliable guy is maybe DMAC, but the coaching staff doesnt bother to use him in the slot or lined up. With two good RBs they run a one dimensional offense.

more than several. Too many for a team coming off a bye week and a winning streak.
This is squarely on the coaching staff. All week i heard about our OCs familiarity and success with Baltimore when playing against Pitt. After seeing NE show the NFL how to beat Pitt. I havent seen one single similar scheme so far that shows me they were studying Tomlin’s defensive strategy. Yes they have a HOFer in Polamalu(somebody I was pulling for Al Davis to draft but he didnt) but they are known to blitz heavy. How do you beat a blitz heavy team, thats a whole nother paragraph. but it can be done.
now what am i left with. A performance befitting of a team that has taken a major step back to the 03-07 years. So much the game has been switched over to the Jets game now since it is more competitive. embarrassing. this is not how you respond to being in first place in november for the first time in years or playing a meaningful game vs a top tier team who honestly today has played very sloppy.

And about NE’s scheme…. the Raiders and everyone else can write up those routes, but keep in mind, we have a pro bowl OL, nad the routes the pats use are VERY complex due to the skill set of our WRs(which are different from the raiders).

So then what about Pitts loss to Miami earlier this year?
They didnt look that ‘Dominant’ the way they did today, which in all honestly they weren’t today either. This was a one sided affair.
Oaklands D vs Pitts Offense and D. no help offensively or on special teams for that matter.
You can’t take the same approach to beat SD, Denver, KC and Seattle vs Pitt.
Its not going to work. The routes don’t have to be VERY complex. But by spreading out the D you limit the ability to bring a heavy blitz.
that reduces the amount of time the QB has and gives you a chance to make a play. This is something that Oakland hasnt done all year. You use it vs Pitt and they wont expect it since they havent seen it. Instead of lining up ford and murphy you can have murphy, reece, bush and DMAC spread with miller at TE. all better hands than ford, the smaller miller and jlh who is subpar.

by complex, I mean diverse.
miami has hartline, bess, and marshall. 2 possession and QUICK and FAST WRs, and a top 5 WR.
The pats have WRs that can run various routes. The reason we are doing better without moss, is because the only route he really runs is strait. That’s it. Now we have receivers to run a variety of routes, and TEs that can run a variety of routes as well. It’s because of this, that our scheme works best with the WRs that we have.
It wouldn’t work with the raiders, because the players they have, don’t have AS vast a route tree as the pats WRs(if you need me to go more in depth, then ask).
We ran vs. pitt too. We were the first team to run over 75(we had like a 100 something) yards against them. Which goes to show you that our two TEs, who are EXTREMELY good blockers(Gronk and Crump), helped us out as well against Pitt.

The decision to suspend him or not will be a telling decision for the league. It will show the degree of the discipline they are enforcing now.

This is not the kind of game a team headed in the right direction plays. Sure most predicted a loss, but this way. NO. This is not a dominating performance by Pitt. They were sloppy all game. This is a team on offense at full strength. IE no excuses.
The game plan was horrible and the execution was even worse. Even the useless attempt to spark a fire with Grad being put in wasn’t enough. But strangely some of the plays he ran were not the ones JC ran in the first half.
How bout taking advantage of the dual RB threat of Bush and DMAC for once and have them on the field at the same time. Or what about Reece lined up in the slot too since our WR core is full of morons who cant catch. Keep running yes, but throw the entire playbook at them from here on out. Once you get predictable, you see a team go off on the O line like Pitt did today. I understand you cant block everyone, but the way they played looked like they didnt know PItt would blitz. I know this, everyone here knows this, the NFL Network knows this. Tom Brady knows this. Manning knows this. Even people who watch football once a year know Pitt is a team that likes to blitz.
EVERY TEAM has a weakness. Expose it and burn them for the W. I predict a PItt loss next week. They are not that great. NE showed this last week, which is why Im so disgusted by this weeks game. Im glad they went to the jets game cause I had enough watching the first 3 qtrs.

That is a good summation.
I was particularly pissed off by the lack of anger (controlled aggression) in the second half. Pushed around all game, the Steelers kept the rapist in all game we were so weak, we couldn’t even make them pay for that afront.

The lesson of this game
Is don’t go play good teams on the road ;-). We have a tough schedule in the second half. Have to win out against the West and beat Miami and Jacksonville. I said before the season started that I would be happy with 8-8—and I still will. We got a lot of press lately, but we still have a ways to go.

Well ... that was fucking pathetic in every aspect.
Like I said upthread, offense I expected to struggle, but I expected more out of our defense.
Play calling was uncreative. O-Line played terrible. Receiving corp was terrible, couldn’t catch, couldn’t separate themselves. D-Line was only slightly better, they got a a bit of pressure but not nearly enough. Secondary and linebackers did not cover well, didn’t fill gaps … need I go on?
We were supposed to exploit them with the slants and short balls, instead they did it to us.
I think ZM dropped more balls in this game than he has in his whole career. Not many of them were especially important big/catches, but … awful comeback for Zach. I’d have way rather had Nnamdi for this game.
What really killed us utterly though was the turnovers, and not being able to get to Ben nearly enough, despite their greatly weaken line.
Obviously it’s hard to say with any certainty, but I still think starting Grads would’ve given us a better chance to win that game, but I don’t think we could’ve beat ’em no matter what today.
So, bottom-line as it now stands, we’re middle-of-the-pack team. We obviously aren’t an elite team yet, and can’t figure out how to win on the Road (except in Denver). But that was our toughest remaining game (with Indy being so banged up I think they’re beatable), so I’m not going to lose hope on this season over this one game. We’re one game behind KC, and probably will be tied with SD at the end of the weekend. Anything can happen from here out, we’re still in a strong position in our Division w/our 3-0 record.

Grad mightve given them a chance to win, by extending the play, but like you said, the play calling was garbage from the get go. That is not how you attack a strong D like PItt.
The D was holding its ground for the most part, but like you said, I don’t know why many people were preferring ZM or NA playing. I would’ve given NA for another week or two of no ZM. Not that I don’t want him, but Namdi is clearly more important than Miller.
Whats more frustrating is that this team has the firepower to beat this so called “elite” team in Pitt. The play calling was what ruined it, followed by the amateur WR performance out there. Yes there was some bad throws but there were plenty of catch able ones too.
losing 3 defensive starters, im not surprised the score blew up. but even in the second half it was good to see several defensive stops despite the lopsided score.

I really wish that Gradz had thrown a TD instead of a pick on his first series...
At that point it’d have 21-10 with plenty of time left. That one play effectively ended the game for us. Terrible decision after what was a promising first series for him. Not the we deserved to win by any stretch, nor was it likely we could have, but … that was a big missed opportunity to get back into this game.
Also, did anyone else notice the blatant friggin holding on Roth’s TD run. A couple of our d-line men got friggin tackled, and there was no call. That pissed me off.

At least DL is a place we have a bit of depth, but still … losing Trevor and probably Seymour for a bit here … the fallout from this game just sucks.
At least we have a greatly weakened Miami coming to town this week. OTOH, if we find a way to lose to Thigpen and Miami at home, I have to say our season is going to feel awfully close to being over at that point.
I’ve been saying it for years now … we need a third down possession guy ala Timmy Brown or Wes Welker … badly. And a really big strong badass like Fitzgerald or Andre Carter to go along with him.
Our WR corp is just not even close to elite NFL standards. Murphy is good enough to be your third guy, Ford is worth keeping cause he’s a rookie, but … I think we need to cut our losses with DHB, JLH, and Chaz, and go after a couple stud WR’s. Badly.

I would not get rid of DHB after 2 seasons. Chaz is another story. What we need to do is bring in a veteran WR to be a mentor to our young WRs(DHB, Murphy, Ford), but who’s gonna be available to us that isn’t a cancer to corrupt and break down this team? And will it matter if there is no NFL season due to a lockout?

Horrible game
Blame goes to the O for not controlling the clock early. The D got stuck out too long and ended up giving up points at the end of the first half. Most important things coming out of the game: injuries and whether or not Seymour gets suspended. Since he has a clean record alongside Rapelisburger’s questionable one, I would say no on the suspension.
5-5 and 3-0 in the division after 10 games? Compared to the last 8 years, I’ll take it. It could be worse… we could be the Bengals.
Oh well at least the Chiefs won today....hahahaha
Really, I’m just poking a little fun after the ass whooping we took last week. The next win will take the sting out. As much as I dislike the raiders, I still hope for them to be good so our rivalry remains relevant. I look forward to seeing the silver and black in Arrowhead in a few weeks and sending them home with a loss. Hopefully not in OT like it was when the chiefs came to oakland. Good luck in MIA next week. Hopefully the coaches don’t forget that Thigpen beat the raiders back in ’08 with the Chiefs.

It was a real beating today, no doubt… but the Steelers are a really good team and sometimes it just doesn’t go your way. They match up really well against the Raider personnel – the broadcast said they were 3rd best historically stopping the run through 9 games? The team’s strength is in running the ball, controlling the clock so the defense doesn’t get tired, and occasionally taking deep shots; if someone can stop the run and rush the passer then the deep game isn’t going to work out well.
But, just for giggles, here’s a list of excuses that would make a difference but probably wouldn’t have added up to enough:
- 10 AM start times are bad (see @Tennessee as well). Two more 10 AM games, vs. the Chiefs & Jags.
- The team might be a little flat when given extra time to prepare? I know Cable stated that was a problem for the opener; maybe it happened here as well
- I believe Campbell’s the better overall QB, but he’s horrible when he doesn’t have good protection; he gets shell-shocked and then can’t complete simple throws. I’d much prefer Gradkowski if pressure will be an issue and the team can’t establish the run.
- Similarly, I would’ve liked to see more Michael Bush; the Steelers are really good at stopping speed runners and I think pounding the ball with Bush a little would have loosened the pressure a little. DMC is great but I don’t think he can wear down defenses as much, and since the Steelers are going to be around the ball I’d prefer to see someone who can break tackles better.
- As much as I dislike Big Ben, he was totally on today. His throws were into tiny windows and the Steeler receivers made the plays. If he was even a little off I think those are potential interceptions – there were plenty of times where the DB was in position but the ball was rocketed in right on target.
- WRs were bad; a lot of balls going off hands. Granted Murphy was rusty and Zach isn’t healthy but the Steelers were making the same plays.
Anyways… long post is long. All said, Miami should be a much better matchup, and only one game back.

I agree w/every point you made. I was also thinking prior to the game that given Bush the carries in the beginning might make the most sense.
Unfortunately, in reality we are literally one play away (Jacoby’s miracle grab to send it to OT) from being 4-6, with the Chefs at 7-3 with a victory over us, with only 6 games left to play. IOW, our season would be depressingly OVER right now, for yet another season, if it weren’t for that one play.
So I’m really glad it happened because it kept us in the hunt and has me stilling caring about the season after 10 games, and it’s been a while since that happened.
But bottom-line, we still don’t have a good enough offense to make the playoffs. We’re really looking at having played crappy offense for 7 of the past 8 quarters, and having scored but one offensive TD during that span. That sure looks an awful lot like same Raider productivity that we’ve ‘enjoyed’ the past 7 seasons.
To me the bright spot is the D, for sure playing better ball, but when you get down to it, our defense has usually been pretty decent over the past 7 years IF the O was getting something going in the game, so … even this bright spot is really not all that much brighter than the past. But the D is definitely improved, so … that’s a positive.
We desperately need an elite or nearly-elite QB, and at least one more really good WR. We need a Fitz, or one of the Johnsons, or an Ochocinco type of guy.
It’s really depressing to me to think about all the good young talent at QB that’s come into the league since 2002, and all the high draft picks we’ve gotten, and we blown our chances on busts like Andrew Walter and the Fat Man.

About the good breaks, it’s true. Sometimes the ball bounces your way, sometimes it doesn’t – with all of the bad breaks and bad calls over the past 7 years, it feels like this year the luck might be turning the other way. Especially since NE has the #1 pick, better this year than any other :) But yep, totally agree with you – I would say this year they’re fighting harder and have looked closer than any other year. The losses against Arizona & SF were games they should’ve won, but given the recent history, the fact that I can say “The Raiders should have won that game” is already an improvement.
Totally agree on the offense & defense. It is nice that the offense can hold the ball a little bit to rest the D; the defense has been good but gets tired very easily – I’m not sure if all defenses are like that or if the conditioning just isn’t great, but watching fewer 3-and-outs is nice.
Also, given how long it took Nnamdi/Huff/McFadden to develop, I think the “really good WR” might actually be one of the guys already there, but unfortunately may not before next year.
