Around SBN: Lakers Should Trade Andrew Bynum So He Doesn't Go To Waste

Are the Raiders tough enough to stop a man called Maurice "-"?

Maurice Jones-Drew | #32 | RB

Maurice has been tearing up defenses the last few weeks:

Against Dallas he rushed for 135

Against Houston 100

Against Cleveland 133

Against NYG 113

... and last week against Tennessee, Maurice "-" rushed for 186 ... and seems to be at his peak right now.

261 carries for 1,177 yards; averaging 4.5 yards/carry. At  5-7 and 208 lbs, the Jaguars' "-"  (who was born in Oakland CA and played High School:ball at De La Salle in Concord, CA) is not easy bringing down.

Watch him.

This game is goin to come down to Dick, Kelly & Big John

creating havoc in the middle. MJD is not fast enough for outside runs so Shaughnessy & Houston should be fine setting up the edges forcing MJD to the middle for Seymore & Co. If the line does a great job in stuffing MJD and not force the safties to play up and spy in the back field and bite on the play actions (cause we know how easily fooled Branch & Huff are on the PA) then Gerrard will have a tough time passing while the line contains MJD.

Anyone can be a fan of a winning team, supporting your team when its down is what makes you a true honest fan.

Oakland must use the game plan utilized in the kc game.

If they can prevent manageable 3rd down situations they can win this game soundly. Maurice is by far the most under the radar RB in the league. In the Houston game, he had 100 yards and 2 TDs but the 2 TDs and majority of those yards came in the 1st half when they built a 17-3 lead only to squander it late and may have lost had it not been for that hail mary to end the game. Jim Marshall and the main 14 in his rotation (Bryant, Henderson, and Mitchell) are the key to this game. They have to use lots of stunts, slants, zone blitz, mix coverages, and put 8 in the box regularly on 1st and 2nd down. If they force MJD to start pressing and dance around waiting for holes to develop it will be a long day for David Garrard versus our defense. If they do not then I see a similar outcome to Frank Gore and the SF debacle.

My exact thoughts, TAW !!!

Same Game plan, plus GANG/SWARM tackling is a must !!!

Exactly! 1st down is critical (and we'll take the risk they throw it) but we need to swarm like killer-bees penetrating their OL

The Jaguars actually run a variety of quick screens,

reverses, pitches and even 1-2 option plays each week to try and keep teams from clogging the middle,

DG is the best we have and help is not on the way. I realize he's not perfect, but I feel a lot better about him at QB than I do the O-Line, DB's, or LB's ability to cover a TE.

Our LBs will stay home and not overpursue behind the DL ... the key is breaking through from the start.

Our coaches are the schizoid ones who suddenly decide to become conservative (after preaching “cut it loose”) and spoil / undermine games. It’s breathtaking to watch our D when it’s in full-attack mode …. and a source of agony watching them coached by senior citizens with varicose veins in the brains.

He's no Jamal Charles

Charles in the final week will be a much tougher test. I think we’ll see a better Chiefs run game come week 17.

by meb6216 on Dec 9, 2010 1:19 AM PST up reply actions

You're right

he’s BETTER and more versatile. Charles has the edge in straight line speed, but MJD has better moves and power.

We held you under 100 yds in regulation, yet you tools keep acting otherwise…we did it once, ain’t no thing to do it again…

we never retreat we always ATTACK!!!

LOL....i love this...

I think jamal is a great running back lol….but the KC fans are kidding there selfs, hes had one really good year so far, and they think hes the best, hell even C. Johnson has fallen off this year, both back in CJ and JC are similar back as not alot of ramming power, just alot of speed. and MOJO is all of the above, guys a battering ram with speed and jukes. top 2 RB imo is MOJO and AP

WE ARE JAGUARS.......FEAR OUR ROAR!!!!!!

I think you'll be surprised

by his ability to run outside. He’s no Chris Johnson, but he’s not a slow back either.

DG is the best we have and help is not on the way. I realize he's not perfect, but I feel a lot better about him at QB than I do the O-Line, DB's, or LB's ability to cover a TE.

When I read someone say MJD was slow, I knew they didn't watch him much.

He’s no Olympic Sprinter, but he’s speed in his cuts and his ability to make people miss make him a dangerous outside runner.

by alwaysforgiven821 on Dec 8, 2010 8:02 AM PST up reply actions

He's got gridiron speed; his running is made for football field with grass and pitched - he's simply amazing and

forces tacklers to change their normal technique, or at least angle on impact.

I always thought he had good speed, great burst, and was very explosive

he’s only gotten better in his career, and love his game overall. He will be a tough matchup for us and the type of back we’ve had trouble defending.

We don't take kindly to folks that don't take kindly around here.

You do know

MJD was the fastest RB of his draft class right? A class that includes DeAngelo Williams, Reggie Bush, Maroney, Addai, Leon Washington, Jerome Harrison. And he’s faster than Adrian Peterson, Marshawn Lynch, amd Ahmad Bradshaw, of the next draft.
In fact since MJD was drafted, only by Run DMC and Chris Johnson have been faster, and that means Jamaal Charles, Felix Jones, Jonathan Stewart, Rashard Mendenhall, Matt Forte, Ray Rice, Kevin Smith, Steve Slaton, Tashard Choice, Tim Hightower, Forsett could not beat not beat him in a race to 40 yards.

by Ewdtrey on Dec 9, 2010 12:54 AM PST up reply actions

Good breakdown

I knew MJD had wheels, just didn’t feel like looking up the numbers. He fell in the draft because of his size, and many a personnel guy is kicking himself for that. I’ll go back to being a fan of his NEXT WEEK :)

mjd meet DEATH RO

we’re not worried about this clown. he is a good running back but not the first we faced this year and after chris johnson ran all over our defense or boys have made a solid effort to make sure noone or no team rushed on us like that. Whether it be a 2 headed monsters ie. k.c.,miami or a team with one beast back our “D” has held as they will against mjd. Plus after a hit from RO like the one he planted on toilet sproles he will probably see stars for the rest of the afternoon and make poor decisions coming out of the backfield.

Noone understands the thoughts of an incarcerated man. the years I've lost, I'm climbing this ladder looking up at this kid whose boss. That 186 he ran for was also consistently against 8 man fronts by Tenn

There could easily be less than 30 pass attempts this entire game. It could also be played in under two hours.

Michael Huff- don't tackle MoJo high or you're going to whiff like against Foster

MoJo is money I have him on my fantasy team and he delivers every week. Maybe we use Mitchell more who is a better tackler against the run.

by Oceanside Raider on Dec 7, 2010 11:40 PM PST reply actions

Let's hope Huff is at corner where he belongs

he played well there the last two weeks and corner is probably a better position to utilize his talents. Tackling not being one of those talents.

Prediction: Michael Huff gets ran over by Maurice at some point.

Huff is a god awful tackler. What he does can’t even be called tackling, it’s more like getting in the way. Hint: When the ball carrier ends up on top of you, you’re doing it wrong!

I think Mike Mitchell has a huge game and might even light up MJD if he gets the chance.

Hippy/Raider fanatic.

by JaKe. on Dec 8, 2010 9:23 AM PST reply actions

That's what I'm waiting for - Mitchell discharging on M"-" with maximum force ... then watching Ro leap in the air to congradulate Mike

those two really appreciate contact – just like Ted Hendricks – they have a big grin on their faces after a good tackle and that’s why I love them because they’re playing the game the way it should be.

Yes, this game is the time both to shine, especially McClain...

it should be his job to make sure any cut back is stuffed quickly. That highlight reel shows exactly why no one on our defense better give up on MJD til he’s down and the whistle has blown and I don’t care about “clean up” penalties. Gang tackling is certainly in order here.

JUST DOMINATE BABY !!!

by rambis64 on Dec 9, 2010 11:57 AM PST up reply actions

MJD is going to be tough

to tackle because he is so low center of gravity and quick on turns but he is not Barry Sanders in any way. If they jump on him and hits his legs a lot it will slow him down. Huff needs to be just in for coverage and package blitzs as he seems to be good at blind side hits.

Never underestimate the predictability of stupidity.

by TheLyleAlzadoPunch on Dec 8, 2010 12:48 PM PST reply actions

Not too worried!

I respect MJD and his abilities, but I dont see him runnin circles on us. We have faced similar backs and he doesnt stand out amongst the others. Aside from the big runs opp’s have got on us, we held their backs in check for the most part. It’s all about sticking to our assignments and not trying to do too much. Also, the best thing we can do to prevent the big play, is to eat up the clock on O. Thus giving MJD less chances to carry the ball and break one. And it also keeps our D fresh. But yes, Seymour, Kelly, BigHen and Bryant are the keys to the Dline. Shaugnessy and Houston should be able to hold the edge. And with the CellBlock(LB’s Warden Wimbley. Death Ro, and San Quentin Groves) right behind them ready to blow up the lead blocks and and stop the runs short. All in all, can’t take them for granted, but I see our passing game having a good impact. i think JC will be able to get some good numbers against them.

Dude is built like an Ox and can make incredible lateral cuts.

The DL needs to contain and take up blockers.
