Draft Picks

Well, I certainly can’t argue with those top three picks and I’m loving Syd’Quan Thompson. I’d stay away from drafting a safety, though. I’d rather pick an outside linebacker. I’d rather sign the veteran safety to go with Branch, Huff and Mitchell.

Good draft by me, BUT I must say no to D’Anthony Smith.

Smith is only 300 and we need a 320-330 space eater. Camaron Thomas, from North Carolina, is massive at 330 and very strong. I really like Thomas as a third round pickup to be our NT.

I also agree with Rated-R about the safety pick in round 5, get another LB or even another CB if no CB are taken in free agency.

I really like Cam Thomas too

so I wouldnt have any issue with him in the 3rd.
The other CB I like is the dude from Indiana-Penn with 4 names.

I really like Rolle even though it isnt a need, and maybe push HUFF to CB

Huff

With his improvement at safety and his weakness being coverage, moving him to cornerback would be a drastic error if you ask me.

Seriously...

THis guy could not handle it… He would be worse than Routt, and that is hard to do!

90% wins in the run game? how many in the pass game? I want a dude that can pass protect as well as forcibly open lanes for the run game.

Anthony Davis: Gallery like body (except quicker feet) bruce campbell cooper carlile like body….ok maybe not, but he seemd shaky to me in pass protection. draws a penalty in his “”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wH2-cJJR-rQ" >highlights", wiffs a block…I’m not sold.

From ESPN

Going on those numbers alone, I would have considered Campbell a solid professional left tackle prospect, but his stock shot up considerably when reviewing the run metric totals. Campbell was at the Point of Attack (POA) of a running play 38 times and won 35 of his blocks. That equates to a 92.1% POA win percentage, which, as detailed in the Peters analysis, would be an elite number in the NFL. In addition, Campbell received double team blocking help on only 11 of those plays, so his one-on-one POA win percentage was a superb 88.9%.

further down ….

From a pass blocking viewpoint, the major scouting eye concern is that Campbell received a lot of help from other blockers; this made me look back at the numbers, which showed Campbell received some kind of assistance from another blocker on 31 out of 120 dropback pass plays. That is a bit higher than one would expect from an elite pass blocker, but it is probably more due to Maryland’s heavy use of zone blocking and facing two teams with 3-4 schemes than it is a sign that Campbell has blocking issues.

Having watched more film on Anthony Davis, I'd take Campbell over him

But, strange as it sounds, Iupati is so good that we should take him if McClain isn’t there and convert him from G to T.

lupati seems interesting.

either on would be great. I really like lupati’s versatility as well, and that is important.

I we still need a qb and a center, right G, and cb, pass rusher to go with scott

by Micheal Y on Feb 27, 2010 1:16 PM PST reply actions

do u know what ur talking about?

were paying a man 60 mil to play QB, plus bruce almighty
samson satele played fine, plus chris morris, really dont “need” another one
a “pass rusher”, so i guess ur talking about a DE, didnt we just franchise one
and get 1 real DE in the draft last year.
in my view we “need” a real MLB, OT, OG, CB, DT

by raiderfan4life on Feb 27, 2010 1:58 PM PST up reply actions

Seriously...

but I would rank our needs OT, DT, MLB, OG, CB.

QB and center are not in the picture right now.

Quarterback and Center

The quarterback position maybe should be in the picture in the last few rounds. We still don’t know if Gradkowski is a legitimate long-term option. Even if he is, we don’t really have a backup because Frye is also a free agent and Russell isn’t even serviceable. Signing a veteran and drafting a rookie in the late rounds isn’t out of the question. I’m not saying we should draft a quarterback, but it’s a remote possibility in the last few rounds.

As for center, I guess I’m content for now with Morris and Satele for maybe one more year. It is something I’d also consider in the last few rounds.

I agree with you in that both positions are clearly behind offensive tackle, defensive tackle, middle linebacker, offensive guard and cornerback. I’d also throw outside linebacker into the mix and possibly even defensive end.

The Ultimate Opportunist

by Rated-R Superstar on Feb 27, 2010 3:15 PM PST up reply actions

Frye is actually a Restricted Free Agent

like Gradkowski. But your sentiments are correct, we do need someone back there. We also have Losman, but he’s even more unknown than Frye. So picking up a QB in later rounds to groom and learn behind Gradkowski could be a good idea. Getting one in FA. I dunno. Because of the rules this year w/ uncapped year, any FA out there would be old or not worth the take. Think about it. If someone is going into legitimate free agency, and their team isn’t keeping them, there’s a reason.

He was signed

It means we get first crack on signing him again

but he is an UNrestricted free agent. The only one of our QB’s that can actively seek employment with no strings attached. And really, where’s he going to go? Likely he’ll stay w/ the Raiders or go back to AFL (or whatever other league he came from).

Win, Lose, or Tie, Raiders til I die!

yeah we can sign bruce to a 4 game contract. Seymour isn’t a pass rusher clown he is good at every spot on the line. if you know football teams like the eagles bring in players on 3rd down just to pass rush. I hope you are playing cause we couldn’t run up the middle this year. from the center to right tackle was just bad.

by Micheal Y on Feb 27, 2010 7:10 PM PST up reply actions

Bruce's combine certainly won't hurt his draft stock, but I don't see it helping him much, either, except for Al!

That 40 time might’ve sealed the deal! lol

I don’t see Bruce being a top first round worthy tackle; the durability concerns have had him dropping on most boards. I like Okung at tackle, and Davis a close second. I’d take Bruce in the second round, and believe he could be there.

I’m with you on most of the rest of the picks. I don’t hate any of those guys. I don’t see us taking any of them, in actuality, either, but I’m not the best prognosticator of drafts.

We need to take OT, DT, and MLB with the top three picks, and I’ll be happy. It’s tough to put them in order; I hope we take the best player at whatever position is available and fill the others accordingly. We can all rest assured there are at least multiple choices for these positions this year, most of who can have an immediate impact.

by Kwester421 on Feb 27, 2010 9:26 PM PST up reply actions

How is he on the right side?

I’d go for whoever is best at the right side in whatever round they are available, and not gamble with a #8 pick that could land us a true POA run stopper/QB threat DT-Price, or a real shut-down Corner -Haden.

The only OT in the top ten to look at would likely be Okung, and we won’t be seeing him drop to us.

I’m less and less enamored with D’Anthony Smith, which is why I think an investment in Price as our POA havok maker would be smart.

Then a grab for Spikes in the 2nd would make sense to seal the deal.

I'm glad to see my awesome pick

did well. Told ya’ll he was Big and quick on his feet. Trade down, pick Cambell, and get more picks. I now project him to be BETTER than our own Vollmer on the pats, and Cambell will be the next Jason Peters. :)

by patriotguy on Feb 27, 2010 4:36 PM PST reply actions

I like Anthony Davis Better

Nice draft but I like Davis a little better than Cambell. After watching Davis play a few times this year he strikes my as a ready for NFL player.I like the idea of trading back for more picks but Al doesn’t work that way.I also like the DT Price from UCLA but number 8 may be high for him. When it comes down to it ,The Raiders desperately need to address both lines and have the picks to do it as long as Al doesn’t fall asleep, wet his pampers or have a gas bubble during our time on the clock like he did last year during rounds one and two.

by bayparkphil on Feb 27, 2010 8:02 PM PST reply actions

Mitchell who

I can’t say much about Mitchell because he wasn’t on the field enough to judge him but for a second rounder I still think we could have found a much more productive player. So why is it thatAl does so well in the later rounds but seems to swing and miss on first rounders (jafatass, macfadden, dhb, etc)do you think maybe Al needs more scouting and hmmm a new GM.

by bayparkphil on Feb 27, 2010 8:43 PM PST up reply actions

i think

he gets too involved with the hype of some players, and also loves speed. But looking at mitchell, he’s talented. I could say very talented. He just needs to work on his coverage skills, then he’ll be a special force on the field. He can be the surprise find.

by patriotguy on Feb 27, 2010 8:54 PM PST up reply actions

the thing is

is that we have not been wise with our money handling, and Davis will likely ask for more money than cambell. I think Cambell is a better investment overall.

Trent Williams turned in a super fast time for a 320 pounder, too

here’s Bruce: video

Big Trent was like .05 seconds behind him in the 40. Pretty amazing for guys this big. Every bit as impressive as the sub 4.3 times, imo.

well

To be honest I would rate them all with a combination of game footage, psychological examination geared towards desire, indepth football type questioning to see what their level of intelligence and learning capability AND finally the combine numbers with that the latter making up maybe 10% of the total package.
I think any of the top 2-3 T and Suh IF he’s available at 8 (which I doubt) would be fine in terms of picking a 1st rounder. Trading down and signing some FAs or out right trading away picks for proven players that have alteast 2 year left on their contract.

I'm with you on this. I'm not even sure if I place 10% on combine results, except the interview process part of it

A lot comes out on what certain coaches and personnel guys think about the kids’ desires to play this game, and there are certain guys we should just be listening too, on account of how often they are accurate about their analyses.

Yeah

The problem is that I have heard some of the interview questions and for crying out loud, who comes up with a lot of that shit? Bringing in a great sports psychologist that has years of working with established athletes (with proven positive results) to evaluate the first 3 rounds atleast especially when the team has a big a need(s) as our Raiders.
The 49ers had some great systems in place years ago and passed on some really bad picks that other teams got stuck with.
I just remember ther question to Ryan Leaf by the Colts: What is the first thing you will do with the money you get from signing? Answer: Go to Vegas. Needless to say they made the right choice (Peyton) and Leaf is getting a sun tan through barred windows and learning about the use of KY.

lol!

You get as good an idea how the kids interview by their ability to suddenly handle the new media attention, and whether or not they exhibit the wherewithall to show they’re aware they’re being judged and that the “Vegas,” and, “I’m going to Gucci (Crabtree, this still bothers me),” answers are best left unsaid.

It’s one thing to think it; it’s another, altogether, to voice it to a national football audience.

Funny you should say that

I have very active my whole life in a wide variety of sports and activities and I would say for the most part I was middle of the pack expect on a few occassions IF I was given an opportunity.
Anyhow in my professional career I treat/train several high calibre athletes and you can always see the desire and difference of the ones that are successful versus the ones that are just mailing it in and are happy to just get by.
You always want the animal that focuses and can play even if they were out the night before until 4am OR they know better than to do it so they can perform at their highest level on game day. The ones that are distracted by all the hanger ons, moochers and glamour thrown at them because of who they are often dont get to the level they should be which is great instead they stay satisfied as good.

I'm not a fan of judging a player off of the combine.

Personally. Game footage, character in and out of the locker room, then i evaluate his skills.

by patriotguy on Mar 3, 2010 12:12 PM PST up reply actions

During the DB 40

They were talking about “game speed” versus they combine microscope speed. I will take the game speed any day. Sometimes a player needs the adrenaline of game day and maybe the pressure of performance to get the best out of them.

There's no comparison. It's like watching a boxer jump rope and hit the heavy and speed bags and decide he's a killer

The game has so many elements where the whole man is involved – pursuit angles, cuts with vision, one-on-one feints, explosive hits with technique and accuracy … things that static cones and straight line running in sterile (unreal) conditions can’t come near.
