Oakland Raider News: Source: Raiders release Gerard Warren
The housecleaning in Oakland continues.
After parting ways with wide receiver Javon Walker and defensive end Greg Ellis on Monday, the Raiders were at it again Thursday as they released defensive tackle Gerard Warren (notes), according to a league source.
Warren—a nine-year veteran out of Florida—was due a $5.925 million roster bonus on March 14. He started 32 games for the Raiders over the past two years, recording 74 tackles and six sacks.
However, Warren struggled against the run in 2009 and with a big roster bonus coming due, the organization clearly felt it was time to move in another direction.
The 31-year-old was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 2001 and spent the first four years of his career there before joining the Denver Broncos for a two-year stint in 2005.

Looks like were cleaning out the garbage...and getting ready for some heavy spending too??
Well Raider Nation i think atleast MOST of us got what we wanted with this one!!! what does everyone have to say now??? i see us trading for an additional first rounder…really soon.

An additional first rounder would be great, but...
I have no idea what they could trade to get it. They are def going to have to draft some d-line help now while hoping the rook’s from last year step up.
Only dull people are brilliant at breakfast.
Oh there are people who want something we have tendered...
Im sure of it, this whole cloud of silence around our team goes to the rest of the NFL too, Im not saying i really want us to get another bpick up top, but its kinda lookin like it…we dont have one next year thanks to seymore’s underacheiving ass…

The only player the Raiders have w/ a 1st tender is Routt.
The only restricted player I see any team even kicking the tires on is Morrison. This would be a great draft for them to load up on picks though.

Well true... hmm i dont know where but were clearing room for trades, drafts, or both.
Besides that, i cant assume anythig else LOL

Kelly-B-Gone
I guess that this means Tommy Kelly is staying? The DT that Warren Sapp called a beast. I guess that Sapp can be a bad judge of talent too!
I think Kelly is one of those guys
who the organization will give every opportunity to succeed. It may be another year before he is released, but certainly not this uncapped year.

Sapp is mad Al will never break him off retirement checks like all good retired Raiders get!!!
and we’ve seen the axe come down only o go back up and come down again, so nobody’s safe!!! Kelly is Waaay over paid BUT! he’s not the worst we got i say he’ll be gone in a season or two if we can first replace people around him…

kelly wont be gone.
i dont know how the nfl broke this down but i read kelly in 09 was the 4th most productive DT in the nfl and 14th most prod. out of all nfl Dlinemen. this guy needs a beast next to him and he will start earning that huge check.

that big check is what really overshadows his play
for that kinda money you need some probowls or playoffs under your belt. and he has none. hopefully all our shit starts coming together this year and guys getting paid huge numbers back it up with huge numbers

yup thats the bottom line...
We will though, we really should have been 8-8 the last three years, i mean that sounds ludicrous but its for real, we’ve had a couple guys that got hurt, a couple that just brought everyone down and alot of crazy shit going on with everyone in the media taking every possible shot they could because they know whats coming, you hear Nnamdi saying the same shit man we are on the verge of becoming a monster bigger then the one that went to the superbowl LESS than 10 years ago! and ONLY 10 TEAMS HAVE PLAYED IN IT SINCE!!!
All the SD, DEN, fans can talk shit but we have NOT been as bad a team as our record or the media has anyone thinking, all you need is that on Sapp, Moss, or any half ass player to break two plays in a game cause they dont care and we lose, the media paints a picture that goes right with it and BAM everyone talks about how Bad we suck, when the reality is… were coming for you better poke your fun while you can cause it aint gonna be pretty

Do you have a link for that?
I am not doubting that you saw it—I would just love to see that article and see if they explain how they broke it down.
I have no problem w/ a line that has Kelley as a DT. They just need a lineman eating moose to play next to him.
I like Bryant and I hope he steps it up, but I think he may be best served as the third DT, where he comes in with high energy every play.
Only dull people are brilliant at breakfast.
let me try and find it.
i cant remeber if it was in a jerry mcdonald article as he was analizing and breaking down our players or if it was an actual stat site. i think the breakdown was the play of the otherlinemen and double teams dramn to him and stuffs etc…

this was from a nfl-football web site heading into the offseason
.Undoubtedly, the Raiders have at least a few holes and missing pieces which need to be fixed before they can field a competitive team.
But, isn’t it about time the Raiders address the biggest position on the team?
No, I’m not talking about QB; JaMarcus Russell isn’t that big yet.
I’m talking about the nose-tackle position.
The Raiders haven’t had a real nose-tackle since 6’5, 375 pound Ted Washington in 2005.
Because of that, Tommy Kelly has taken a lot of heat from fans and pundits who don’t understand the roles of the players on the D-line in a 4-3. And most of them don’t understand that the two defensive tackle positions are completely different and unique.
Tommy Kelly plays the three technique, which by definition is:
Also known as an “under tackle,” a three-technique tackle lines up opposite the outside shoulder of a guard and shoots that gap between guard and tackle to put pressure on the quarterback, combining a tackle’s size and an end’s speed.
His job is to control the strong-side guard and the B-gap, between the guard and tackle, penetrate and be a disruptive in the backfield, and he has done a very good job.
Actually, Tommy Kelly has done such a good job that despite facing constant double teams, he was the NFL’s 14th most productive of all D-linemen, including defensive ends.
Of all NFL defensive tackles, he was the fourth most productive.
Based on production, Tommy Kelly is the best player on the Raiders D-line. Yes, even better than Richard Seymour and Trevor Scott.
Kelly has been praised for his work ethic and devotion in the weight room by numerous players and coaches, including Raider defectors Lane Kiffin and Warren Sapp.
He just needs someone next to him to help take off some of the pressure. He needs a partner in crime in the interior D-line. He needs someone who can play the one and zero technique the way it was meant to be played.
The Raiders nose tackle usually plays the weak side shoulder of the center. His responsibility is to control the center and weak side A-gap and draw a double team from the weak side guard and center.
This position is usually the biggest, strongest player on the team. They not only play with tremendous strength, but great technique and leverage as they are expected to be immovable. They are also often shorter and stockier than the three technique.
Together, the two defensive tackles are not only responsible for holding their gaps and the center of the field, but also preventing the center and guards from having a free release on the middle backer.
If the Raiders were able to get a real nose tackle, it not only would directly benefit Tommy Kelly by allowing him to work without the burden of constant double teams, but it would help the middle linebacker as well, Allowing him to flow to the ball and better maintain his gap assignment (strong-side A-gap).
By directly benefiting Tommy Kelly and Kirk Morrison—or whoever replaces him—it would also indirectly benefit the whole defense.
Tommy Kelly would be free to wreak havoc without being double-teamed. The D-ends would receive less attention from the o-line and teams no longer would be able to run at will, forcing the pass against our defense.
The Raiders have Gerrard Warren, Richard Seymour, and Desmond Bryant—none of whom can effectively play the one-technique. But, would all be great backups at the three technique behind Tommy Kelly.
So the Raiders need to find someone outside of their current roster.
Nose tackle is arguably one of the hardest positions to fill, requires a special skill set, and is in high demand, so the list of candidates is short.
Here is a list of the top candidates who may be available to the Raiders.

From a Ramone Brown Bleacher Report article - But these claims are unsupportable
“Actually, Tommy Kelly has done such a good job that despite facing constant double teams, he was the NFL’s 14th most productive of all D-linemen, including defensive ends.Of all NFL defensive tackles, he was the fourth most productive.”
There are no sources cited for this data, nothing to verify Ramone Brown’s claims I believe his statements are erroneous.

The Next Bryant
The Raiders need to find the next Desmond Bryant, maybe out of Yale this time, and Kelly can go bye-bye.
Bryant
I have heard alot about this Desmond Bryant……but only on this site. I didnt get to watch many Raiders games, well only two, the opener and the finale due to my time restrictions in Iraq, and I have no idea who this kid is. What has he done that has so many people so fired up? Why would we be looking for the next one?
This isn’t knocking him, i am actually asking, should I be excited about this kid being on the field next year?
Today, it seems, he's suddenly getting more attention
E.g.:
[Warren’s] departure, first predicted by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, clears the way for yet another young player to get more snaps.
Dez Bryant, and not the stud receiver from Oklahoma State. The Raiders’ Desmond Bryant was an undrafted rookie out of Harvard who steadily worked his way into the defensive line rotation.
Bryant had 32 tackles — within three of Warren, an every-game starter, and a forced fumble. Only two rookie tackles had more stops. Raw out of college, the coaching staff loved his high ceiling. He’s already been in Alameda this offseason working with new defensive line coach Mike Waufle.
They still need to add depth to the tackle rotation, with William Joseph a free agent and Warren out. But Bryant is very much in the mix for increased playing time.

I thought Bryant was great last year and is a big reason
Why we will be able to draft an OT or LB in the first round. I’m very excited to see what he will do with more opportunity and a year of NFL experience.

What does everyone think? i heard we’d be plyaing a mixture like we did in a couple games last year, personally since we man up and dont blitz to get pressure i think its the smart thing to do, Which probably still would Have us drafting a Tackle going into the draft, cant really remember using a first on a tackle though…

Ryan Tried
Remember that Ryan initially tried a 3 – 4, but did not have the right personnel. The Raiders would need to draft a true stud NT. Also, Trevor Scott was used more as a rush LB last year, so that may be the way the Raiders are going.

5-2?
We run that at my highschool, but its basically a 3-4. The ends are standing with a ILB over both Gaurds

In that case I would be ok with the Taylor Mays pick
as it would then make some sense.

Unless Kelly is getting all that money cause he can play Nose T...
Now that would make more sense, remember games like the eagles, when they werent even ready for the dif looks? i could totally see us using 3-4 mainly and having Scott, or even a safety like mitchell play that last spot rushing, hey who knows…

He can improve with more talent next to him……I hope. Plus, With him leaving, Who else would we have? Dez Bryant. Im liking what the kid is doing but we need someone else there. Our Defence is the best part of this team. And were only a few pieces away from becoming an elite defensive team

Dude really
I like nearly all the things you say but Kelly is far far far far over paid and we could get 3 other guys for that price and talent level. I say cut that wart off and reinvest his salary into Suh if we can trade up somehow and maybe sign another FA DT or take Bryant and sign some other FAs and take DTs later rounds.

Kelly will get a restuctured contract or get cut...
We saw the axe come down how many times this offseason!?!? yes and we also know Al likes to pay people to perform and in the case off B Marshall we’ve seen not doing that can cause a whole world of trouble. If he doesnt live up to his pay which is nearly impossible it will be easy for them to present him with a restruct or cut him and he knows that, besides…theres still time to cut him this off season…or anyone else

While I disagree with this move at this point, I believe he deserves another shot, when all positions of weakness are strengths.

Kelly's got a 7 year deal for $50.5 million with 5 years remaining. So, get used to seeing him and perhaps has naked ass
I’ve seen him look great and suck – his range of performance indicates a talented but undisciplined man. If Waffle can get Tommy to play more consistently at his top end then he may do well this year – otherwise we’re still vulnerable to the run even with Bryant and a DT coming through draft.

They are ok
But I would say dont take them too much. If you want a kick in the ass take some green tea, matcha to be specific. Watch out for the regular energy drinks they have a tonne of sugar in them. Even Jamba Juice watch the ingredients because SOMETIMES they sub the supposed berry ingredients with berry juice. Juices for the most part that they use are from concentrate which are sugar laced. Get one that has a higher protein ratio or a smaller version. But all in all Jamba Juice is better than pop or straight juice.

I got to drinking so many bulls w/ coworkers it came to defeat the purpose.
You’d be surprised how much energy you’d always have if you only ever drank water, when you’re thirsty. Lots of B vitamins and the right blend of other ones you get from a balanced diet to make your body absorb them to the best of its ability.
Still have ’em sparingly, but the energy drinks are super bad for you, with all the sugars and taurine and crap.

Are you guys shopping him? Or has he been traded? I heard you all tendered him a week or so ago but I haven’t heard much else about him since.
