First images of JR - see link in post

Comcast SportsNet's Kate Longworth spoke exclusively with Oakland Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell.

Here is a link to the preview: http://www.csnbayarea.com/pages/sportsnetcentral

JR does NOT look slimmer!

Tune into SportsNet Central tonight at 6pm to see the interview, and log onto CSNBayArea.com to see her interview in full.

Update from Adam Schefter:

http://twitter.com/Adam_Schefter

JR is indeed on site - the question is, is he transformed?

http://www.ibabuzz.com/oaklandraiders/2010/03/16/russell-gets-with-the-program/

Yesterday Willie Brown, who remains in touch with the Raiders, said that Russell was absent from the first day of the Raiders offseason workout program because of the need to be in Alabama for the closing of a house purchase. He should be in the house Tuesday, according to Brown. And he won’t bear much of a resemblance to the player who weighed anywhere from 265 pounds to something approaching 300 at times during his first three NFL seasons.  JR, Willie Brown said, is on a special diet, having his meals sent to him.

Clink on the interview link - the portion on JR starts at the 4:30 minute or so, and the whole interview is also worth watching.

I hope Russell is in shape and ready to give it a go.

I have to see it to believe it.

Plus, crash diets don’t necessarily entail change of character. This house business, for example – JR’s more intent on real estate than football.

by Spirals galore on Mar 16, 2010 8:17 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree but

at least this is a start…he’s at least doing something this offseason to try and improve his situation. I know it’s not much but it’s a step and hopefully there will be more steps to come. As good as it is that he’s getting in shape early this offseason…he needs to be studying tapes and working on relationships with his WRs.

I’m all for bashing JR but I’m an eternal optimist (obviously since I’m a Raiders fan still) and I hope that he can continue to make steps in the right direction but I don’t hold out hope that he can be what we all expected him to be when we drafted him at this point.

I’m still interested to see what Jackson’s influence is going to be to JR’s development.

If Willie Brown is not blowing smoke on command

(he says he’s still very much involved with the Raiders), there will be an outburst of media activity once JR is spotted at camp. But it is almost 8:30 now and nothing has come out yet. What time does the voluntary workout start?

by Spirals galore on Mar 16, 2010 8:27 AM PDT reply actions

Work-Work-Work

Is he willing to throw passes until he can’t lift his arm and get the muscle memory necessary to make all the throws?

http://www.ibabuzz.com/oaklandraiders/2010/03/16/brown-jamarcus-getting-in-shape/

Brown on JR’s crash diet:

"The most important thing is he’s getting in shape. Not only losing weight, but getting in shape. He’s watching his diet, he has special meals brought in that he’s eating, and we have one of the Raiders, a former player there with him to monitor him and make sure things are going fine. The weight thing, he’ll get it down. He’ll get it down."

Brown on his capacity with the Raiders:

Although Brown told a camera crew he was retiring during one of the Tom Cable vigils at the club facility, he recently returned from a player development seminar in Dallas and sounds as if he will continue in that capacity.
"The most important thing about my job is to monitor the players and eliminate some problems for Tom," Brown said.

What problems for Tom?

by Spirals galore on Mar 16, 2010 8:48 AM PDT reply actions

I would guess

to take some of the burden of keeping the players in shape. One less thing he has to deal with. Always good when someone is helping the coach in any capacity. So if that’s true that he’s there to help Tom, seems to busts Son’s opinion that he retired because of Cable being kept around.

I knew your question on the other post was directed at Sons:)

Brown sounded really pro-JR. If Cable is pro-Grad, Brown may be a buffer of sorts.

Brown may also be

so loyal to Al he speaks the same BS. He’s not going to come out and bash the kid.

He sounded genuinely sympathetic, and intense about JR, too

said something like, “after all that he’s gone through last year” and such.

I am very curious about JR’s “tranformed body” and possibly (but not likely) mind.

Cut him

Skinny or fat. This guy is a bum and throws his teammates under the bus. The longer we wait for him to progress the bigger the joke we look like to the rest of the league. From what I gather, the penalty for cutting him will be alot less without a salary cap this year. Make an example out of this punk.

by golfswithglock on Mar 16, 2010 8:56 AM PDT reply actions

Correct me if Im wrong, but a real QB would have been at the team facility preping weeks ago. So, fatboy shows up and now everyone is forgiving? This is why that trashbucket won’t get cut. Explain to me why it take 3 YEARS to get into shape?

If I want your opinion, I'll give it to you.

by Parental Advisory on Mar 16, 2010 12:58 PM PDT up reply actions

could it be that Willie Brown

put his foot into his mouth?? He insisted that JR was going to be back from Alabama last night and show up today to workout. Yet no news yet on JR being there.

JaMarcus Russell will be making appearances on Jenny Craig commercials?

by RaiderFan_21 on Mar 16, 2010 9:40 AM PDT reply actions

Now they have Willie Brown out covering for JaMarcus

Until it actually happens I’m skeptical. Why is it JaMarcus always has an excuse for not being with the team? It’s not doing him or the team any good to keep propping him up.

So, does this mean that John Herrera and Wilbur Brown are long lost brothers? Both know how to spin a good yarn…

by Mallard Davis on Mar 16, 2010 10:48 AM PDT reply actions

http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/JaMarcus-Russell-reports-to-offseason-program.html

According to the report, Russell won’t be made available to the media.

So, they probably won’t be able to confirm Raiders staffer Willie Brown’s recent comments that Russell has lost a lot of weight. Brown also said that Russell was absent from the first day because he was finishing the purchase of a house in Alabama.

Though, I don’t know why they wouldn’t want to parade the new skinny Russell around.

Year Four

This is year four of JaFatAss Russell’s six year contract. If Al was to cut him, he would be admitting that KIFFIN was right and that will not happen. You don’t need an overhead projector to figure that one out…

by Mallard Davis on Mar 16, 2010 12:03 PM PDT reply actions

Kiffin was very pro-JR when Al recruited him - see the link below (an April 28, 2007 article)

http://oak.scout.com/2/639582.html

Kiffin gave 12 minutes of audio on the selection of quarterback JaMarcus Russell. Some of the highlights are included below, including the fact that no team came close to trading up for the Raiders pick, and the full audio is enclosed below:
“He can help us win games.”
“It became a no-brainer…a guy that wins…he is a winner. He is dedicated.” “He is a by example guy. They all follow him.”
“We know JaMarcus better than anyone (who) gives criticism.”

by Spirals galore on Mar 16, 2010 12:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Overhead Tell A Different Story

Al’s overhead projector firing of Kiffin told a different story. “He’s a great QB, get over it”

How soon we forget….

by Mallard Davis on Mar 16, 2010 12:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Everybody was on JaPukeus' nuts

Back then.

“JaMarcus Russell is going to immediately energize that fanbase, that football team — on the practice field, in that locker room. Three years from now you could be looking at a guy that’s certainly one of the elite top five quarterbacks in this league. …You’re talking about a 2-3 year period once he’s under center. Look out because the skill level that he has is certainly John Elway-like.”

-Mel Kiper, Jr

I think, that Kiffin wanted Joe Thomas…

by transparent58 on Mar 17, 2010 8:17 AM PDT up reply actions

Yet Davis himself

said he didn’t want the guy and Al had to say “he’s a good player, get over it”

a comedy, in retrospect

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/raiders/2007-04-29-jamarcus-sidebar_N.htm

Even so, it was clear Russell views NFL success as his new mission.
“I set my standards very high,” he said firmly.
First-year Raiders coach Lane Kiffin has a similar philosophy, and that’s one of the reasons he clearly is enamored of his new team’s new player.
“There was no doubt in our mind this was the direction we wanted to go,” Kiffin told reporters at the team headquarters. “This is someone who’s coming in here to compete to play. We know from what we’ve seen on film and when we’ve met with him and all the research we’ve done, going back to when he was extremely young, that this is someone who can come in and help us win.”
[…] “This is the right guy for us, and this is the right time,” Kiffin said. “It was perfect. This is what needed to happen for the Raiders right now. This is a great day.”

no question - vivat superetque Gradkowski!

(That was Polish slang.) But I am sorry for JR – first, he looks genuinely fat, then reporters try to pretend he’s lost weight (oh, the stones look bigger than usual, so his face must have shrunk), and on top of it, Brhynno – our own Brhynno – is disgusted by the publicity, when a big factor in this publicity was his relentless and superb wit on LyleAlzadoPunch’s post!

by Spirals galore on Mar 16, 2010 8:09 PM PDT up reply actions

The media is totally blowing it up like he actually lost weight

He probably lost 10-15 lbs at most and is in the 260-270 range, which is still fat. Talking about his head being slimmer is bs. The dudes head still looks as fat as before.

and the gout is concealed behind the drooping lard.

I am outraged at the STUPID blunder Willie Brown made with this interview. He could have refused to address the question – instead, he blurted out his vision of a trasformed JR. Stupid, stupid, stupid!

by Spirals galore on Mar 18, 2010 7:16 PM PDT up reply actions

yes, it seems that Willie got carried away - he is definitely pulling for Russell and maybe that's when

he quit – when discussions of bringing back Cable and not bringing back Russell were being discussed amongst Al and Amy.

Why is a Hall of Famer like Willie Brown PR’ing for a loaf of crap like Jamarcus Russell.

by shadowfreder on Mar 18, 2010 7:58 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah that was just silly

I hate how the Raiders continually try to make excuses for Russell. He went to Vegas, oh, it was sanctioned by the team and in fact someone accompanied him. He didn’t show up for voluntary workouts, oh, that is because he was working out in Arizona and had to close on a house in Mobile so he had to be in Mobile.

Which BTW is dumb. You do not have to be anywhere to close. There are such things as fax machines and fedexes. Or even powers of attorney.

by shadowfreder on Mar 18, 2010 7:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Willie Brown was improvising

The whole segment on JR was a mega mistake which the Raiders PR tried to conceal by saying that JR won’t be available to the media till minicamp. Little did they know that a brave reporter will jog her way into fame…

I just find it sad, that the world wants him so badly to succeed--they all really do, we're no different here--that being fit as a professional athlete

is worthy of front page headlines in sports. What has the game come to?

Don’t believe the hype; he’s gonna shoot himself in his fatass foot with his fatass gun and sit on the fatass bench, with his fatass “homie” whispering fatass sweet nothings…

For someone as vain as Russell with his ostentatious clothes and jewelry to become so gross is a sign of either

NGaF or, more likely an eating disorder brought on by stress. I predict he melts down worse than ever this season. If he starts, he’ll bomb and get the hook no later than halftime week – 2. Grad will come in but not in time and we’re down 0-2 but back on track.

Slim Ja FatAss

At his age, if he ate healthy and jogged about five miles a day he could lose twenty pounds in the off season. Of course, we never know at what weight he started his program.

20 lbs??

Running 5 miles a day with a great diet regiment would lose 40+ lbs easy. I’ve done it. What pisses me off is I’m not paid to be be in great shape at my job & yet I can do it. This fool is ripping off Al Davis for $68 over 6 years & is getting worse? F’ him.

Reasonable

I was just throwing out a reasonable weight that JaFatAss should have been able to lose in 2 1/2 months. After all, we are talking about JaFatAss Russell here. We found out last year about mid season that he came to camp over weight and was fined last year. We may never know what weight he was at, how much he lost, and what he weighs now. I think Grady Jackson was listed at 350 one time and was a potato chip away from 400…
