Franchise Players
So, this is a series I'm doing across SB Nation's NFL blogs. Five most important players to the franchise.
Just one catch: they have to be with the team for the long term future (four years or more).
In no order:
Michael Bush, HB: The best HB in Oakland's stable, he's a hard-charging runner that needs more opportunities. In other words, get him the ball!
Nnamdi Asomugha, CB: One of the top three corners in the game, simply shuts down his side of the field.
Trevor Scott, DE/OLB: Emerging pass-rusher, simply not enough to go around. He's going to be very good.
Louis Murphy, WR: Showed promise as a rookie. Makes the tough catches and will grow further.
Zach Miller, TE: Most reliable receiver and good blocker. Safety valve for whoever starts at QB.
Your turn!

Five Most Important Players
I think the four easy ones are Asomugha, Janikowski, Lechler and Miller. Nnamdi is the best at his position, so he has to be in there. Shane is vital for pinning the other team deep when our anemic offense does nothing. Sebastian is counted upon to (sadly) do most of the scoring. Zach is the most reliable pass-catcher on the roster, something desperately needed. As for the fifth player, I think it’s the eighth overall draft pick. We can’t screw up another pick. Huff, Russell and McFadden haven’t lived up to their potential and it has taken Gallery a while. All of that is tied into the terrible seasons at least a little bit since 2003.

No
He’s not even the best player at his position. As far as pass-catchers go overall, Miller is first and McFadden would be second if we actually used him correctly. Schilens, the best wide receiver on the team, would be after that.
I like Murphy. If he plays up to his potential, he’ll be really good. At the end of the day, I just don’t see an argument for him being one of the five most important players on the team.

What about Tyvon Branch?
Or is he not for the long term?

I would have to say in no particular order...
Shane Lechler since he is going to retire as a Raider & is by far our best player.
Trevor Scott since he is a great pass-rusher & brings great value since he is a bargain & will only get better.
Louis Murphy is going to be good for quite some time because he seems to have a great work ethic & also because with better QB play (honestly it can’t get much worse) is going to be getting better.
Zack Miller because looking at the contracts the kickers & Asomgua got, it would be insane to let possibly one of the three best young tight ends in the league walk.
Number five is a bit of a shocker because I honestly don’t think Al has faith in Gradkowski that once the Russell experiment is over he is going to either draft or sign someone else long-term IMO. Thus I’m going to say Desmond Bryant because he is a small DT but is an overachiever. He is well-educated & based on his rookie contract will be easy to resign long-term.This means he can be a great role model for the youth of the community. So there are my five franchise players I would build around. Lechler, Scott, Murphy, Miller, & Bryant. Thoughts?
Murphy is 5.
McD. DHB (yes, he will), Tyvon B.—no doubt—B Grad, Mike Bush, Trevor Scott, Desmond Bryant, will be integral parts of this team’s immediate future, and most of them for at least two years.

HMMMM, Tough one....
In no particular order the 5 franchise players I would pick for the long run would be:
Michael Bush – He needs 18-22 Carries a game.
Trevor Scott – He is going to be a monster.
Michael Huff – He is finally turning into a top flight S.
Shane Lechler – You can’t replace what he means to EVERY game.
DMC – If we used him like the Saints used Reggie Bush down the stretch and throughout the playoffs, he would be a game changer.
Throwing one extra in – Kamerion Wimbley – He will make a difference in the pass rush.
