Official 2010 NFL Offseason Thread

Moving away from the official 2010 free agency thread, I've decided to just let that one go since no one can find anything over there anyway with the amount of comments. Instead, with the majority of the free agents signed and the draft approaching even closer, I've decided that a whole offseason thread is more appropriate. Please recommend this thread so people can get the latest news.

Star-divide

The post itself will not be updated. I'll post everything I find noteworthy in the comment section. I encourage all of you to do the same. Discuss any rumors, trades, draft ideas or whatever else that heart of yours desires.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Thinking Marquise Pouncey could be on our radar

Jake Grove was taken with a fairly early pick not so long ago, the same year we took Gallery with the first round pick.

While I want Dan Williams with our first, I’d take Trent or Davis or even Bulaga, and of course Okung (I know, he’ll be taken already). It could go on line.

i don’t mind this, either. Pouncey is that guy who’d dominate the line of scrimmage every play, and even the existing guys we have would all look way better with a center like this. I’m intrigued…

If we went with Pouncy at least C to the left would be strong with Henderson and Gallery there - but since they ditched.

Green its obvious they’re going for an OT replacement. So I hope the Satele/Morris team steps up their play.

He's projected late 1st early 2nd. Our second pick would be prime.

I’m not hating on Satele by any means, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this guy is our second overall if he’s there. Pretty exceptional talent, lauded for his Shotgun skills and the ability to recover and catch tackles. Also big and strong enough to handle most NTs by himself. Not a doubt in my mind he’d be an upgrade to Satele. Questions about his skills as a ZBS blocker, but don’t think that’s a huge obstacle for a solid guy like Maurkice.

While I totally agree about the center position being a priority,

Henderson cannot hold down the left side. I was hopeful Barnes would help out he clearly is also not the answer for any of our line assignments. Priority #1 has to be finding a LT in this draft. It’s not going to happen in free agency because teams put a premium on left tackles. If Okung,Williams,Bulaga,or Davis are there at #8 we have to take them. I mean even if Suh is there (I know I’m going to get allot of neg with this)at #8 We have to give our quarterback time to make reads and allow receivers to get open. Suh won’t help us if our defense is on the field for 40 minutes. If after the first(If we draft OT in round one)he’s (Pouncey)still there we move up to get him. even if it costs us our forth. the guys that good. otherwise, we should take J.D. Walton, Center Baylor, 6-3/300 with our second rounder.

I've made the same argument about the tackles, but wonder about any of them after Okung

I’d take my chances with Davis, but after that, while I agree they’d probably eventually be upgrades, I don’t think they’d usurp Mario, Khalif, or Langston for either side. Okung’s about the only guy I’d say for sure. Like I said, I’d take my chances on Davis. You’re probably right, tho, since it’s such a considerable dropoff after the first four.

Then there’s that thing where some guys don’t work out, and others who you find that go undrafted, like Jeff Saturday.

The other two tackles I based on scouting reports and the combine

Bulaga’s outstanding blocking in the Hawkeyes’ 2010 Orange Bowl win, which helped keep Georgia Tech all-star defensive end Derrick Morgan idle, made it seem inevitable he would leave early for the NFL. His athleticism and strength are exactly what teams want on the quarterback’s blind side.

He’s: Considered a very competitive, smart and hard-working leader up front. Fought to return from thyroid condition during 2009. Cleans up piles and defends teammates on the field.

Williams strength is Pass blocking, but With a good line coach he should be able to learn better run blocking technique..very unselfish player

I watched this guy at the combine and he really impressed me. tremendously strong body.not fat like most tackles but very muscular.

And a lot of folks almost missed how big Trent ran within hundredth of a second with big Bruce Campbell

who got all the attention. Trent out vertical jumped him too, and did nothing to hurt his stock in any of the mirror drills, or at all for that matter. I was at first high on all the top four guys, and posted on those four names too, but am wondering if Bulaga’s arms truly are short enough to put in question his production in the NFL, or if any of these guys beyond Okung are immediate impact players.

It still might be the right pick in the first, but I’m leaning towards DT Dan Williams.

Trade Idea

How about this, We trade JaMarcus to the local ice cream parlor. In return, free ice cream at all home games.

Think about it, JaMarcus would probably shit himself when he hears hes been traded to an Ice Cream Parlor, until his agent informs him that he doesnt live there, he just works there.

And we all get free ice cream!!!

Arizona Cardinals

The team has signed linebacker Joey Porter to a three-year deal.

The linebacker visited the Washington Redskins on Thursday and by Friday afternoon he was a Cardinal.

“It is exciting on many levels,” coach Ken Whisenhunt told the teams’ official Web site. “Two areas that come to mind are his productivity on the field, (because) getting 26½ sacks over the last two years is pretty impressive, especially considering last year with not even playing a full season. Also the mentality he brings, it’s something we have made great progress with as a team. Having another veteran player, who has had great success in this league, to contribute to that will only help us in an area defensively where we want to improve.”

According to Adam Schefter, the team is the most interested in free agent cornerback Nathan Vasher.

San Diego defensive coordinator Ron Rivera is familiar with Vasher from his time with the Bears.

The Ultimate Opportunist

by Rated-R Superstar on Mar 21, 2010 4:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Thompson definitely has an exciting college highlight reel

but this is exactly the kind of highlight skills that need to be viewed with perspective: many pros would have made these plays, with qbs getting the ball in there split seconds before, and wideouts more able to use their abilities and bigger bodies to shield smaller defenders rendering them non-factors in many games.

don’t get me wrong. I love Syd’Quan, but we can’t spend too high a pick, and expect him to be able to play against most NFL’s #1 and #2 guys. No question about his commitment against the run and to sacrifice his body, however slight.

How about someone like him as a SS? Reason why is because in Man Coverage, I don’t see picks, but I see a hell of a lot of batdowns. His Tackling is Very Impressive. Also, when I watched some of the plays, it looked as if he froze to wait for the flat. I could Imagine him at SS doing all of these. Plus, it seems he gets more picks when down the field in Zone Coverage.

The Cincinnati Bengals linebacker will climb Mount Everest.

"It’s four miles up. We’re going to go about 23,000 feet, a mile short of the top," Jones said Friday. "If you’re going to jump off a bridge, you don’t want to start out jumping off the highest bridge. I’ll get a taste and I’ll be back."

while that is true, and the fact that they hardly draft one in he first place,

it is probably 60-70% likely that they will in this draft. They WOULD rather draft someone than bring in TO, I can tell you that right now. Plus we also acquire players in trades during the draft, like we traded our 3rd rounder(or 5th I can’t remember) for Welker, and a 4h for Moss. We don’t need TO at all, and it’s EXTREMELY unlikely that they will even consider him.

let me just say(and read the whole post before typing)

Welker is a huge loss for us, but we can still win games without him. Do you know edelman? or Tate?

Let me tell you about edelman: He’s EXACTLY like welker! only a bit less quick but also faster. Edelman is, in every way shape and form, wes welker. And if anyone can fill in that void, it’s edelman.

Tate: Supposed to be a first rounder, said to be a lot better than Hakeem Hicks(or Nicks?). He’s VERY fast, and he’s excellent in route running.

But besides those two guys, let me tell you about brady(I’m going offense, I’ll go defense next): Who were the WRs he won those 3 SBs with? Well let me tell you, those names are not moss and welker. The number one WR on that offense was none other than DIEON BRANCH. In 2009, He’s coming off his SECOND BEST YEAR with the acl, and mcl, injury, and I believe he will be A LOT healthier next year(actually I know he will be). If you want me to explain how we lost in the playoffs against baltimore without welker, I think Brady was getting to used to using him. Which is why I think he’ll be better this year because he will be playing with receivers not named welker for half of the year, and that would only improve his mechanics.

As for defense, it was the #4 overall defense I think, until the saints game. Pretty good for a very young team if you don’t mind me saying. The only thing we needed was a pass rush, and our secondary was above average last year. TBC got 11 sacks, but we need someone who can be an every down OLB, which is what we’ll address come this draft year. the thing is, the team was YOUNG. probably only 3-4 guys on the starting defense who were above 30. they will have an extra year under their belt as a group, and I think the will surprise a lot of people next year.

We had a defense last year, and brady should be a lot better this year, and he won’t over throw a billion passes like he did in 09(forgot to mention that as well. Brady was average-below average the first half of the season, and he still had his second best year).

The defense was young last year, and will still be next year, but they did very well in 09, which is why I don’t think our team will be doomed on defense.

The offense, was still really good last year, despite welker taking advantages of the double/triple teams from moss. last year as well, bill O’B, our offensive Coordinator, had the offense surround ONLY Brady, Moss, and Welker. So there was no creativity last year at all. we hardly ran the ball, and hardly passed to the TE. But that does not mean in anyway that our offense will deteriorate as well. We have a bunch of young guys, who did great backing up last year, on our OL, WR, and QB core(rather not name them all).

We have our future set, and we have our team still intact. that is called very good management, which is why i do not think we will be deteriorating as a team until maybe 5+ years down the road.

D. The entire passing attack requires Welker AND Moss. Outside of them I hear of no other receivers outside of Edelman and that was due to Welker’s injury.
E. The Raiders were among the least penalized teams…until about 4 games left. Its not where you were at a certain point in the season, it is where you finish. To finish my point, the Raiders finished 4th highest in penalties, if memory serves correctly.

wouldn't let me finish my post in one sitting so

you also addressed some issues. The pats were one dimensional last year because you still refuse to get a RB, you ditched your TE at the end of the season and Brady was coming off a knee surgery that I hate to say reminds me of Culpepper’s. He will diminish. Personally what I was trying to get at was your suck will be better than ours. You face the bills twice a year, and split with the dolphins and jets. So you have 10 games with which to win 6 more. The Raiders would go 8-8 in the AFC least.

first of all, the afc east got better

second of all, the injury doesn’t remind me of culpeppers at all! Brady had his SECOND BEST YEAR AFTER THE INJURY!!!

If you watch edelman play, he is MOST DEFINITELY a welker clone! we all call him mini welker.

And I mean Brandon Tate. look him up on youtube highlights, he is freakin amazing.

Deion Branch sucks right now right? So if brady played with WRs who SUCK, then he would have no problem playing with WRs not named Welker and Moss(the only receiver i liked n the pats of those year was Troy Brown). That’s is a very logical statement!

Edelman played, even when welker was in, and he performed awesomely. The passing attack last year, due to Bill O’ Brien’s laziness, was ONLY welker and moss, which is why I stated, and many other pats stated as well, that O’Brien needs to be more diverse, which is how the pats won championships. This year, I can expect our offense to be more diverse, therefore it can be dngerous because teams won’t expect just moss and welker; but moss, edelman, tate, and any receiver we draft.

So I think you are very wrong that the pats are in decline right now. If there were more pats fans with me, we would bombard you with no hesitation on why we are not in a decline.

So I invite you to post your thoughts on our site, Pats Pulpit, and see why you sound foolish.

by patriotguy2 on Mar 27, 2010 9:47 AM PDT up reply actions

and look at how much draft picks we have this year!!!

12 of them! 4 in the first two rounds, and all 8 in the others!

We plan our future, as well as our present. That’s also a reason why we are not in decline, because we play smart in the offseason.

by patriotguy2 on Mar 27, 2010 9:50 AM PDT up reply actions

we never really did

but they have downgraded more than they upgraded. Cromartie is only only “partial” upgrade they have, only because I don’t think he’s as hyped up to be a great corner. They got rid of Thomas Jones, and replaced a dumbfounded LT, and they got rid of the noisy Kerry Rhodes. Their defense will still be very good, and their running game is a maybe, but i think they will not be AS good as last year. But who knows, maybe sanchez will be better next year as well.

3 recommendations for rule changes

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/03/22/competition-committee-outlines-three-major-changes-for-safety/

1. Standardize protection for defenseless players.
2. Protect ball carriers whose helmets come off by blowing the play dead.
3. Expand the rule protecting long snappers from being hit immediately after a snap.

According to the report, “everyone in the league” liked these changes. Football as we know it is gonna transform:

Of the three, the one that sounds like it has the greatest potential to affect games is the first one. Fisher also said that “a player in the grasp whose progress has been stopped now becomes a defenseless player,” which would mean that if one defensive player grabs and stops a running back but doesn’t tackle him, and then a second defensive player comes in and hits him, that would be a 15-yard penalty.

by Spirals galore on Mar 22, 2010 8:03 PM PDT reply actions

Wow

A 15 Yd. Penalty for “cleaning up” as I like to call it. Thats lame, Its part of the game. What happens when the ball carrier breaks free of that grasp? Does a guy get yelled at because he didnt help his teammate? He was only following the rules.

They should change the “Roughing the passer” rule. Im tired of seeing countless penalties just because the QB pulls a Jay Cutler and falls down. Have these QB’s are acting just for the yards. Its disgusting.Ecspecially when the flag is thrown because the defender couldnt stop and runs into the QB. The damn guy doesnt have breaks like a car does he? Its riduculous

Arizona is gonna be average, losing Kurt is a huge loss for them. But they still have Larry “The Freak” Fitzgerald and their D is getting stronger.

St. Louis- Well, There gonna have the #1 overall pick come 2011.

Seatlle is gonna suprise alot of people I think. I have a feeling Pete Rose is gonna make some smart decisions and depending on who the QB is, I think they have a legitmate shot at being a suprising threat to San Fran

FA CB Frank Walker has been talking with the Raiders

http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Source-Frank-Walker-drawing-more-interest.html

Baltimore Ravens veteran free agent cornerback Frank Walker is on the verge of scheduling some visits with NFL teams, according to a league source.
Walker has been talking with the Oakland Raiders, St. Louis Rams, Houston Texans and the Jacksonville Jaguars.
His representatives have remained in touch with the Ravens.
The Ravens haven’t ruled out re-signing Walker, an aggressive, physical cornerback whose primary drawback is being prone to a lot of penalties.

by Spirals galore on Mar 24, 2010 10:33 AM PDT reply actions

Great ... another knucklehead ... If Hugh Jackson is behind this he needs to stick with his OC duties

“But Frank’s a better player than what people think. I get as frustrated with Frank as anybody does and Frank knows that. He’ll tell you about it and he’ll laugh about it.

“Frank has got as much talent as any corner in the league. He’s tough, he’s competitive, he’s a physical guy. He loves to play the game. When he gets carried outside of his technique he struggles just like any corner does.”

The Raiders should trade a second round pick for McNabb or somehow trump their offer.

I said it many times last year, but the Raiders would challenge for the playoffs with an average quarterback. With McNabb, they would have an outside shot of making the playoffs and it would be fun. The Raiders just need to smell some success.

And they wouldn’t have to use a high pick on a QB and could build up the lines.

I don’t know why they aren’t. I would be if I were them since they’re in a great position to win their division. Maybe they are interested in Donovan and we just don’t know, but San Francisco should be floating out there a lot more than Oakland and Buffalo in terms of interest in McNabb.

Raiders interview LB Jamar Chaney

http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Source-Jamar-Chaney-ran-a-445-today.html

According to a league source, Chaney was clocked between 4.45 and 4.48 seconds in the 40-yard dash on NFL scouts’ stop watches.
Following the workout, the Oakland Raiders conducted an extensive interview with the former Bulldogs standout.
Chaney was the fastest linebacker at the NFL scouting combine with an official time of 4.54 seconds ahead of Florida State linebacker Dekoda Watson’s 4.56.

by Spirals galore on Mar 25, 2010 1:04 PM PDT reply actions

Jamar Chaney - MS State (DS) 6-1" 242 4.54 official 40 and only 26 reps. Predicted to go as ILB after Angerer

Positives: Plays pretty well in zone coverage, speed allows him to cover tight ends in man coverage as well… Good ability to read and react, maintains gap control on most plays… Missed all but one game of 2008 but showed durability starting every game in 2009… Consistent productivity (totaled 89 tackles in both 2007 and 2009)… Good at breaking down and making open-field tackles… Versatility, split time between inside and weak-side backer… Excellent blend of size and speed, has adequate bulk and ran a 4.54-40 at the combine.

Negatives: Tackles too high and doesn’t drive feet well, more of a drag-down tackler… Not a hard hitter, needs to work on running through the ball carrier… Lacks strength to get off blocks easily, must work on finesse moves to get past blockers… Could add some upper-body muscle to help shed blocks.

Raiders in hot pursuit of McNabb
NFL.com is reporting the Oakland Raiders are the team in the greatest pursuit of Philadelphia quarterback Donovan McNabb.

This story has heated up in the last two days. It clear we all need to keep our eyes on this as it develops.

Give credit to Oakland for recognizing it needs to improve its quarterback crew. I don’t necessarily think McNabb, 33, is the right answer for many reasons. But if he comes very cheaply and if he becomes open to the idea of playing in Oakland, this pairing could be intriguing.

by duballers23 on Mar 25, 2010 1:48 PM PDT reply actions

I believe philly wants a second rounder in the deal.

I think that’s a horrible deal. He’s worth a 4th rounder, 3rd at the most.

by patriotguy2 on Mar 25, 2010 1:55 PM PDT up reply actions

If they can get him for something like the 8th pick and a later pick maybe, for McNabb and the 24th pick, then this would be an awesome deal.

The difference between the offensive linemen at number and the ones at 24 are not that big of a difference. We got Gannon around the same age as McNabb is right now, and Gannon gave us 5 really good years. I’m not saying that McNabb will be as good as Gannon was for us, but McNabb definitely has a lot left in the tank.

Naw, more like just our 2nd (don't forget its a high second) for their second ans McNabb.

http://www.ibabuzz.com/oaklandraiders/2010/03/24/report-raiders-inquire-about-trading-for-eagles-qb-mcnabb/

The thinking also could go along the lines of bringing in McNabb so that he can give the Raiders the best chance of succeeding this year and asking him to help develop Russell.
It’s worth noting that McNabb had flattering things to say about Russell a few days before the Eagles played the Raiders at the Coliseum last season and went out of his way after the game to speak with Russell.

"Not all the negative aspects of what’s been going on should fall on JaMarcus because it’s a team game," McNabb said in a conference call with Raiders beat writers four days before the Raiders beat McNabb and the Eagles.

McNabb said that Russell’s progress has been retarded by the high turnover in coaches, offensive coordinators, play-callers and players during his first three seasons.
It’s a tough situation for him," McNabb said in the conference call. "I’m sure that he’s going to do what he has to do in order to pull himself out of it, and just make sure the guys understand that he’s putting in the effort as well."

Washington Redskins

The team may be interested in bringing in a big name at wide receiver such as signing free agent Terrell Owens or trading for Denver’s Brandon Marshall.

Washington had Antonio Bryant in for a visit, displaying their interest in adding a pass-catcher.

Spoiler alert: He isn’t tipping his hand. Shanahan wouldn’t rule out either receiver and indicated that as free agent prices fall, the Redskins could get involved in the bidding process with some players well after the draft.

Shanahan strongly considered signing Owens in 2006, before the outspoken, headline-grabbing receiver joined the Dallas Cowboys.

I’m glad it didn’t mention Nnamdi in the article, so that we can hang on to our top guy. I think McNabb would eventually re-sign with us. If we can build a decent o-line around him, get a solid defensive tackle, and with the Chargers probably getting a little worse, the Broncos not really doing anything, and the Chiefs not getting that much better besides Jones, I think we can winthe division. Plus, Hue Jackson is a distant cousin, so who wouldn’t want their cousin as their coordinator? He wouldn’t turn his back on his family.

McNabb

While I don’t think he’s elite, he’s an obvious upgrade over all of our quarterbacks on the roster. If he would sign an extension, I’d be more willing to give up something of value. For our second pick, I still don’t know about this; however, it’s not yet true so I will not worry.

The Ultimate Opportunist

by Rated-R Superstar on Mar 29, 2010 2:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe he’s not elite, but he is pro bowl caliber and giving up a second rounder is a pretty good deal for a pro bowl qb if we can sign him to an extension. Although I would not like giving up the second rounder, I think that he’s worth it. Just think of it as a steal if it happens. Compared to the Cutler trade (Bears had to give up a ton), the Roy Williams idiotic trade (1st and 3rd for a decent wideout), and a buch of other trades. He’s 333, but Gannon came here at 33 and gave us 5 great seasons. If there is a chance of something even remotely close to that hapenning with McNabb, then I will take that for a second rounder anyday.

by duballers23 on Mar 29, 2010 2:53 PM PDT up reply actions

McNabb

is an elite QB. Over his career, you can’t argue with his accomplishments. As I mentioned earlier, the guys wins the superbowl a few years back, he should be mentioned in hall of fame discussions. he simply played in an era dominated by manning, warner, and brady who deservingly overshadowed his accomplishments. Difference with Gannon is that Gannon sat on the bench for several years as backup, when he arrived in oakland, he had fresh legs for a 33 yrs old player. McNabb has taken a pounding over the last 5 years. So it comes back to what are you giving to pick him up for essentially 2 years, maybe 3 tops. Cutting JR and picking up McNabb will save a boatload of cash the first year, if tagged, McNabb will cost us year 2 & 3 much more (potentially $15 to $20 mm as both Brady and manning are about to sign for those numbers). The only way this works is either a 3rd/4th round pick or sending an expiring contract the other way.

The San Diego Chargers have signed the free agent cornerback to a two-year deal.

Vasher is a five-year veteran, having spent all his previous seasons with the Bears.

“In Nathan Vasher, we’re adding a proven NFL player with experience in the league,” said general manager A.J. Smith. “Having played in Chicago under Chargers Defensive Coordinator Ron Rivera (2004-06) and Secondary Coach Steve Wilks (2006-08) is an added bonus.”
