The Mike Iupati Dilemma

So I'm noticing everyone here seems to be in agreement with Tom Cable (!!!) about taking Mike Iupati with the #8 pick. I agree on paper this would be the best first round pick we've had in ages. But then I stop and think for a moment. Cable has shown any idiot lineman with the exception of Erik Pears can be a guard. We need a right tackle. We need a nose tackle. We need a middle linebacker. We need a quarterback. The list goes on and on. I'm not disagreeing with picking up this beast. It would improve us immensely. Our o-line would be much better. But is this the right choice? This draft will determine our future for the next 4 years. We must think carefully.

At all the other positions, there is alot of talent

OT: Vladimir Ducasse, Jared Veldheer, John Jerry, Jason Fox, Selvish Capers and Kyle Calloway( Who I like alot )

LB: Sean Weatherspoon( He can play Mike) Pat Angerer, Brandon Spikes, Micah Johnson

QB: Dan LeFeavour, Tim Tebow (Yes, I like him), Coly McCoy

But at Guard, There is no one close to lupati. He is elite talent and a need in Oakland

But @ 8 ???

If we want to Iupati that’s fine, but trade down out of the 8 spot and get another pick or something for it. 8 is just to low for this guy. Granted I’d rather have Iupati than Campbell at 8 but trading down is our best option

by rambis64 on Mar 22, 2010 10:14 AM PDT up reply actions

My philosophy on “reaching”, is that if you see a guy you really like, draft him. Just ignore what the media an the public calls “reaching”. If he’s what you consider the best option for your team, than you should draft him. Trade downs aren’t guarantees.

Absolutely right. A team should know it's own needs and determine who in the pool satisfies those needs.

Half these experts get their take from the other half .. and the other half is half unreliable.

There are exceptions, when even amateurs recognize outstanding ability (e.g. Suh)..

That's what Al thought about Heyward Bey

and we’ve been publicly flogged for almost a year for that one.
I’m saying trading down is O.K. if we don’t get Iupati later on then we get someone else like Vlad Ducaasse or Roger Saffold. This is a deep draft

by rambis64 on Mar 23, 2010 1:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Elite?

Iupati being owned by Geno Atkins should be a warning sign for anyone interested in taking him in the first round, and don’t have a top-line coach to improve his pass protection -which is one thing our O-Line prospects should already have down.

The last thing we need is yet another developmental project.

by xville on Mar 22, 2010 10:26 AM PDT up reply actions

Don't get me wrong, I liked Iuapati

for some time, but he struggles at pass protection.

John Jerry would be a more complete guard, which is why he has moved up in the draft; and of course he has a good amount of experience at RT.

Mike Petrus, who also needs work on technique, is a brute, and we could get him later. He opens up huge lanes, and was the strongest guy at the Combine. Invest some quality technique coaching with him, and we become impenetrable. He also used to open up nice lanes for McFaddy.

by xville on Mar 22, 2010 4:25 PM PDT up reply actions

I like Petrus. He could be right there for us with a second third round pick if Morrison gets picked up

Williams in the first, or even Haden (I know it could happen) if Cleveland doesn’t take him, and then Linval Joseph in the second. Angerer if by some chance in the third.

Of course, none of this will happen, because it’s almost ideal…

what about DT?

I want Suh and have been running scenarios in my mind on how to get him. I love Iupati and live in Vandal country (i don’t count the cougars). I am just asking why if there is better talent elsewhere available we are looking at guard. It seems redundant unless we get rid of Gallery or move him to RT where he belongs.

tatum, davidson, romanowski, wisniewski...LET'S GET NASTIER!!!!

by angelesoterica on Mar 21, 2010 11:37 PM PDT reply actions

Gallery at RT?

That makes no sense. He tried it before and failed miserably. I think we should take McClain with this pick, but knowing Crypt Keeper Al, he’ll take Campbell. If Cable is able to convince him to take Iupati, I couldn’t even be made at that. He SHOULD switch him to RG if we take him tho…..

moving up to get suh

will have us sacrifice so much. we sacrifice a first rounder, and another pick and possibly a player.

by patriotguy2 on Mar 22, 2010 3:47 AM PDT up reply actions

We don't have the ammo

We have to keep in mind we do not have a 2011 first rounder, and we don’t really have any players that are great trade bait (except Nnamdi whose contract makes him almost impossible to trade). So Suh is out of the question for us.

I hope we just take the best OT on the board.

the only scenario is trading with the lions!

i really would like to see what the lions would do to get out of there with the 2nd pick. it is a costly pick and the lions spent to much last year. i think we could get it cheap like giving them rhoutt/2nd round and something else. the lions need alot of help and not that pick. if we get suh, thats the only way that i can come up with

by sports with steve on Mar 22, 2010 7:43 AM PDT up reply actions

to many needs for the raiders at the 8th pick

do we go dt?
do we go ot?
do we go lb?
if we traded with the lions then its a no brainer, suh! can we keep the 8th pick to? if so then go after a o tackle who is there at 8.

by sports with steve on Mar 22, 2010 7:47 AM PDT reply actions

lupati may very well be what we need at 8

think of this, how well will barnes or henderson be( depending if there is a LT comp. between the 2) with lupati beside them. henderson was playing well before gallery went out and played well when walker made the 2 games appearance at LG before geting layed up for the balt. game. with gallery and lupati anchoring and manning up the mid line we get better play from our outside tackles and barnes, in my mind, is out to prove his worthyness after a short and critical season last year aswell for henderson leading the league in sacks, he knows hes better than that. im for lupati at 8 barring suh is completely out of the mix.

Iupati would be wonderful

BUT, we need a TACKLE.

Love Iupati, but not with pick 8

Gimme a scenario where you trade down for another third rounder and take him mid first round. Trade and get Suh or McCoy, and still get Iupati.

Trade down and get Okung? Haven’t heard that question posed much yet.

Dan Williams is who we should take with the 8 pick if we don’t move up or down.

If he is still available in the second round

yes, draft Iupati.

I've been saying Dan Williams at 8 all long.

I like him even more than McCoy. If there is another scenario that makes sense we could draft Iupati but we must trade down to do it. Same said for Bruce Campbell. That would be a trade even further down to around late 1st which would be more picks. You can draft Campbell in the 25-32 range & end up with more picks. Imagine being able to draft 2 2nd rounders (Cam Thomas at NT & Pat Angerer at MLB).

by TAW on Mar 22, 2010 4:41 PM PDT reply actions

I’m pulling for Iupati or Williams, probably my two favorite draft prospects of the whole entire draft.

i've got an idea worth pondering

should we just trade out of the first? cleveland has a boatload of picks and our first rounders generally arent that good.

tatum, davidson, romanowski, wisniewski...LET'S GET NASTIER!!!!

by angelesoterica on Mar 22, 2010 7:10 PM PDT reply actions

I like the idea, but don't see it happening

Al will think he knows more than anyone else in the world again, and therefore unwilling to relinquish the ideal pick in the draft. But I’d be all for it. Also, probably not a lot of takers.

rams offer a 2nd pick/free safety for mcnabb

if this happens then the whole 1st round is changed. the rams wont draft sam bu an ot or maybe a dt suh? you will hear this all day about the rams/mcnabb trade offer
