Chester Taylor

The Detroit Lions and Houston Texans are expected to “lead the charge” for the free agent running back.

Taylor was expected to continue talking with the Vikes, but he’s now a prized commodity with Darren Sproles off the market. He’d start over Maurice Morris in Detroit while Kevin Smith (ACL surgery) works his way back. Houston is slightly surprising, as they’ve insisted their preference is for a young running back. Also believed to be interested: Bills, Broncos, Chiefs, Giants, Bears, and Steelers.

Hmm

The Chester Taylor to Detroit one is interesting. Kevin Smith is a 1000 Yd back and cathes the ball well. Maybe there plannin on sending Kevin to San Diego for Antonio

Taylor might be like Michael Turner was for Atlanta

even though he’s a little older he doesn’t have much wear and tear on him since he’s mostly been a back up.

New Orleans Saints

The champions of the football world have released defensive end Charles Grant, linebacker Mark Simoneau and offensive guard Jamar Nesbit.

Grant began 2009 playing strong run defense, but tailed off badly toward midseason and was a complete non-factor from a pass-rushing standpoint before tearing his triceps in Week 17. The Rams showed interest in Grant two offseasons ago, but may no longer be interested due to his serious injury and scant production. Grant, 31, might struggle to pass physicals.

Atlanta Falcons

According to NFL Network’s Adam Wyche, the Falcons are the favorites to sign cornerback Dunta Robinson.

Atlanta realizes its biggest need is cornerback, targeting the Texans’ 2009 franchise player and re-signing incumbent LCB Brian Williams to a one-year deal on Thursday. The terms of Robinson’s deal likely won’t be revealed until after midnight tonight. No. 2 UFA cornerback Leigh Bodden’s market will then be set, although he’ll probably get a shade less guaranteed.

You mean Routt isn't the top rated CB on the market?

That’s crazy…he was tendered like a pro bowler so he must be the best.

Chad Pennington

According to a report, the quarterback is expected to re-sign with the Miami Dolphins.

Pennington doesn’t have a deal in place yet, but he’s expected to return to Miami “barring something crazy.” Even considering Pennington’s strong relationship with the Dolphins’ front office, it’s surprising that they would bring him back with Pat White and Tyler Thigpen also under contract.

I don't think Pennington Minds.

He know he is injury prone.

However, he’s been a great captain to that team.

by NFLanalyzerfromhome on Mar 4, 2010 7:37 PM PST up reply actions

The deal is hung up right now

Pennington wants a no trade clause and Miami isn’t budging. Apparently there are a few other teams interested in his services…as a backup more than likely.

Seattle Seahawks

According to a report, the Seahawks “could be the favorite” to net free agent defensive end Julius Peppers.

And another team joins the bidding, assuming this isn’t misinformation spread by Peppers’ agent, Carl Carey (which it very well may be). Seattle used a number of high picks on defensive ends under ex-GM Tim Ruskell, and none panned out as hoped. Patrick Kerney may also be on the outs.

Let him go there

He wants crazy money (like Dick and Albert) and wont live up to the expectations that the salary demands. I just wonder how much will be guaranteed. It seems the agents are holding the teams that want certain players captive with the guaranteed cash end on deals.

San Diego Chargers

Our division rivals made a few moves today.

The Chargers changed their mind on Darren Sproles, opting Thursday morning to place a first-and-third tender on the dynamic running back and kick returner.

Jamal Williams, a Pro Bowl nose tackle who had been with the Chargers for 12 seasons, was released. He will be 34 next month, would have been owed a $1 million roster bonus and was scheduled to earn $5 million in 2010.

I was hoping that the Raiders may go after Kapman, but it doesn't look like they'll have a chance
A league source tells the Chicago Sun Times that free agent Aaron Kampman “may be headed to Philadelphia.”
The move would make sense for both sides, as Kampman fits a 4-3 defense like the Birds’ best, and Philadelphia is desperate for a consistent pass rush on the strong side of its defensive line. Kampman is naturally a left end.

Cincinnati Bengals

The team released wide receiver Laveranues Coles after just one season.

Coles’ four-year, $27.5 million deal was a high-risk, low-reward gamble from the start. Drop-prone with no playmaking ability or separation skills, Coles was a major factor in the Bengals’ passing attack falling apart at the seams down the stretch. To put it bluntly, he was a colossal waste of $10M in guaranteed money. The Bengals now have an obvious void at No. 2 receiver.

Chicago Bears

The team is already in talks with Antrel Rolle, the free agent safety that was just let go by Arizona.

It’s been just hours since the Cardinals released him, to the Bears are getting down to business promptly. Ideally, they’ll have Rolle signed up before the free agent market opens at midnight ET, and be able to turn their attention to DE Julius Peppers at that point. According to the Chicago Tribune, a deal with Rolle “could be in place within the next few hours.”

The Raiders should pick him up for cheap

Have Sheppard, Johnson, and Routt compete for the starting job opposite Nnamdi. Sheppard is only 28 and was injured a lot of last season, so he is probably still a starting quality corner. If the Raiders could get him for something like 2 years for 5-8 million, then they should do it.

by duballers23 on Mar 4, 2010 6:23 PM PST up reply actions

He did struggle on the Jets.

But that was because of the eagles putting him down for Sheldon Brown, which was unfair.

The Indianapolis Colts are close to re-signing the middle linebacker according to John Clayton of ESPN.

It remains to be seen how much money Brackett will get, but the deal figures to average around $6 million annually with $12-16M guaranteed. The Giants and perhaps the Eagles were thought to be interested in Brackett had he made it to the market, which opens at midnight eastern time Friday morning.

Since the Giants and Eagles were reportedly interested in Brackett, I guess both teams will target Karlos Dansby.

Julius Peppers

The free agent defensive end is near a deal with the Washington Redskins according to Lance Zierlein.

Zierlein “expects a deal to be done” by Friday. It’s worth noting that Zierlein, the son of former Steelers offensive line coach Larry, reported days before it happened that Albert Haynesworth would end up in Washington. So it appears he’s got some legit sources inside the organization. We still wouldn’t rule out the Bears or Eagles swooping in at the last minute.

49s' GM Scot McCloughan on the 2010 free agency and draft

Link:

The market for free agents in 2010 is dramatically different in an uncapped year because more than 200 players who would be unrestricted free agents are now restricted and require compensation in the form of draft picks for a new team to sign them.
“It’s changed the market,” (49s’ GM) McCloughan said. “It takes (free agents) out of the picture.”
Although the 49ers wasted no time in signing cornerback Nate Clements to a monster contract as a free agent in 2007, McCloughan’s approach is to build through the draft and fill specific needs through free agency.

I like McCloughan’s take on combine results:

McCloughan said he finds more value in the medical reports and personal interviews at the combine than the sight of guys running around in shorts and T-shirts, also known as the “Underwear Olympics.”

Meanwhile, Howard is unhappy at being a RFA:

He suspects teams will focus on the unrestricted free agents during the first few days of the market, and then turn their attention to the players like him who come with strings attached.

At this point, something has to give in the bank’s favor for this team, but when no more posturing needs to be done, all FAs have been looked at, and anticipated money to pay this years acquisitions, and it’s time to renegotiate his contract. I believe he’ll be rewarded handsomely.

It’s when he opens his mouth to the media that he puts in jeopardy his future with Al and this team.

The “league-wide expectation” according to Adam Schefter — based on what he said on NFL Live last night — is that Peppers will sign with the Chicago Bears.

Peppers’ first official free agent visit will be to Halas Hall on Friday, and reports have Lovie Smith landing in Charlotte momentarily. The first visit often means the team has offered the most money. The Eagles dropped out of the bidding, while the Seahawks were never seriously in it. The wide receiver has agreed to a five-year, $25 million contract with $11 million guaranteed with the Detroit Lions.

The signing isn’t sexy, and seems lengthy for a wideout going on 29, but the Lions have been desperate at No. 2 receiver for years. Burleson caught 63 passes for 812 yards and three touchdowns in 13 games for Seattle’s putrid offense a season ago, consistently outplaying T.J. Houshmandzadeh. […] He (Burleson) won’t be more than a WR3, but should be a sizable upgrade over Bryant Johnson with vertical skills and another full year removed from ACL surgery.

Wow free agency started at 12:01am est...

well after Al takes his meds & calls it a night. I don’t think Oakland is going to be a major player this year with the record contracts to both kickers & Nmamdi’s, Routt’s, Jatfatfuck’s, Kelly’s & Seymours contracts on the books. I do have hope something dramatic to change the course of the team’s fortunes will happen not in 2010 but in 2011 & I’m not talking about the lockout which means they will be .500 since they won’t play any games but I seriously think something has to give next year.

Brandon Marshall

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Seahawks are strongly considering signing him to an offer sheet.

“It sounds like it absolutely can happen and will happen,” Schefter added.

Seattle appears to be the only team in the league contemplating the move. The Seahawks do have two first-round draft picks. Per restricted free agent rules, Denver would likely receive the No. 14 overall pick as compensation if Seattle meets Marshall’s monetary asking price. Seahawks owner Paul Allen’s pockets are undoubtedly deep enough to do so.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that free agent defensive end Julius Peppers will receive $40 million in the first three years of his deal with Chicago.

The $40 million is expected to be guaranteed, ensuring that Peppers will have received roughly $60 million between the 2008 and 2012 seasons, including his back-to-back franchise tags from the Panthers. Peppers’ deal with the Bears is imminent and figures to be finalized within the next hour.

The Chicago Bears have agreed to terms with the free agent running back on a four-year, $12.5 million contract, including $7 million guaranteed.

Matt Forte becomes a committee back, and it’s believed he may even lose his starting job. Kevin Jones, who missed all of 2009 with a serious ankle injury, will likely be released. Taylor is going on age 31 and managed just 3.6 yards per carry last season, but has caught at least 41 passes in four of the last five years. He’ll be the immediate favorite for passing-down duties, which is a vital role in pass-happy play-caller Mike Martz’s system.

Anquan Boldin

According to Peter King, the Baltimore Ravens are “close” to finalizing a trade for the disgruntled wide receiver.

Kansas City – Baltimore’s main rival in the Boldin sweepstakes – is working with more second-day (second- and third-round) picks, but also has way more holes to fill. The Ravens were always Boldin’s most likely landing spot. His run-blocking prowess would fit right in with their smash-mouth style, and Boldin is enough of a play-maker to fill the team’s No. 1 receiver void.

If all goes well with projected No. 1 overall pick Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford later this month, Feeley will be holding the clipboard for him in St. Louis. The signing paves the way for the Rams to release Marc Bulger.

Kyle Vanden Bosch

The Detroit Lions have agreed to terms with defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch on a four-year, $26 million contract, including $10 million in first-year guarantees.

Coach Jim Schwartz gets his former pupil, and KVB gives the Lions’ pass rush some credibility and leadership. We suspect they won’t look back fondly on this deal, though. Vanden Bosch is 31, hasn’t been healthy since 2007, and had next to zero production in Tennessee without Albert Haynesworth. The Lions overpaid for Vanden Bosch and, to a lesser extent, Nate Burleson.

Lions-Browns Trade

The Detroit Lions acquired defensive tackle Corey Williams and a 2010 seventh-round pick from the Cleveland Browns in exchange for a fifth-round selection in the 2010 draft.

Williams passed his physical, so the deal is done. Clearly desperate to move on from the $38.6 million Phil Savage bust, the Browns gave up a solid pass-rushing tackle for pennies on the dollar. Williams played of position at end in Cleveland’s 3-4, but still managed four sacks a year ago and had seven in Green Bay’s 4-3 three years ago. The 29-year-old returns to a 4-3 in Detroit. The move makes it more likely – though not a lock – that the Lions could take Oklahoma State LT Russell Okung with the No. 2 overall pick.

The Miami Dolphins have inked the free agent linebacker to a five-year, $43 million contract with $22 million guaranteed.

Dansby, 28, gives Miami exactly what it set out this offseason to acquire: play-making ability. And the Jacoby Jones hype train comes to a screeching halt. Though he was dealing with a hamstring injury, Walter managed just 53 grabs for 611 yards (11.5 YPC) and two scores last year as mostly a third or fourth offensive option. We wouldn’t expect too much more out of him in 2010. Jones could begin to rotate in, Owen Daniels will return, and the Texans are likely to be at least slightly less pass heavy after drafting a competent tailback in April.

The deal Rolle signed was a five-year, $37 million contract that includes $15 million guaranteed according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The Giants needed to upgrade badly at the position, but of all the free agent signings so far, we like this one the least. Rolle has fine ball skills and range, but has never made a Pro Bowl, tackled poorly last season, and often seems to be out of position. In a perfect world the Giants would team him with SS Kenny Phillips to form an imposing safety duo. Phillips’ future is cloudy, however, as he comes off microfracture surgery.

primarily depth. Still think our first pick goes on tackle, based on multiple reasons:

1. McClain, Haden, McCoy and Suh will all be gone.
2. Looks like Rams want Bradford; we could take a qb, but not in the first few rounds at least.
3. After the top lineman prospects in the early rounds, it’s a crapshoot as to how many are actually first round worthy. I’d say only Davis and Okung are truly top ten pick worthy, and you could make an argument against Davis.
4. Not like Al to trade down for picks, unless there’s a handsome offer for it in the trade, which doesn’t appear likely at the moment.

That said, I fully expect to be blindsided by more Al bs before draft day, and my logical output therein destroyed, and the picture could look very different.

Since the Lions are shopping their no. 2 pick and Bradford has a very real possibility of going to the Rams at no. 1, then good ole ndamakong suh will be sitting there for whoever trades up to get him. Will all davis sitting their at 8, he may see and opportunity to trade up and get that no. 2 slot. Maybe sawp first rounders and throw in a 3rd and a 5th. maybe swap and throw in Richard seymour(if he and the lions got a long term deal done which would be the only way). I would take suh in a heart beat considering gerard warren is gone. We would still need another right tackle and another linebacker but our d line would still be deep and we would have the best interior lineman in the last 10 years to come out of college.

Though Rhodes made news for a mid-season benching, he played well down the stretch, earning his starting job back. Due just over $7 million the next two seasons, he’s a cost-effective replacement for Antrel Rolle. Give Cardinals GM Rod Graves credit for nice use of the fourth-rounder acquired for Anquan Boldin.

Anderson retired in 2009, but it was never a firm decision. His body needed a year off to heal and he didn’t sound like a guy that was ready to hang it up. But he’ll be 35 when next season starts and would likely be a backup.

Buffalo Bills beat writer Mark Gaughan speculates that free safety Donte Whitner is possibly on the trading block.

Whitner played behind George Wilson at the strong safety spot late last season and he isn’t going to unseat impressive second-year man Jairus Byrd at free safety. Still, Whitner would be high-quality depth and it’s unlikely the Bills could get equal value for that in a trade.

It’s an exorbitant amount for a third-stringer. The Eagles’ asking price for Vick is believed to be a second-round pick, though it’s hard to imagine them not pulling the trigger if a team like the Bills comes calling with a third- or fourth-round pick. Brandon Marshall

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Cincinnati Bengals have contemplated pursuing restricted free agent Brandon Marshall of the Denver Broncos.

No visit is scheduled yet, and Marshall was in Seattle over the weekend. However, Schefter’s report suggests that Cincinnati is serious about a potential move. Marshall profiles well for a franchise that loves to give players second, third, and even fourth chances, and the Bengals’ No. 21 overall draft choice would likely be enough to consummate a trade. Bengals beat reporter Joe Reedy, though, calls the team’s purported interest a “smokescreen…meant to drive up the price with Seattle.”

Both QBs are older than 40, so they’d be obvious candidates for one-year, minimum-type contracts. Garcia didn’t play last year after being cut by the Raiders and Eagles. Brunell held a clipboard for the Super Bowl champs, and was horrible in a Week 17 spot start in place of “resting” Drew Brees.

ooh soo he hated being in Denver soo much that he caused problems right? when it came down to it he caught over a hundred balls and ten touchdowns like nobody on our team comes close to, and thats for a team he hates playing for!
oh and one more thing, paying him what he’s worth is cheaper than an (unproven)8th pick.

(and mind you might want to check to see what marshall has been making the last three years 300+ catches 3000+ yrds 20+ TD’s) you’d be pissed too!

Yeah the doctor wanted to put me on utube… wtf!?!?

Relax, I was making a joke. I don’t have a problem with your signature.

As for Marshall, I understand that he’s one of the top wide receivers in the league. If acquiring him was so easy, he still wouldn’t be on the market.

Wide receiver isn’t a big enough need for us to the point where we should part with the eighth overall pick. We don’t have a wide receiver that will ever be as good as Marshall is right now; however, I know that we can beat some good teams with those wide receivers and they will be improved heading into next season. Instead of giving up that eighth overall pick, we can hopefully draft someone like an Anthony Davis or Rolando McClain to fill a need.

Lastly, who’s to say that Marshall will be happy here? While that eighth overall pick is unproven, Marshall’s attitude here is just as big of an unknown. I’d rather take a risk on Terrell Owens. Marshall costs the eighth overall pick and Owens doesn’t. I’d take Antonio Bryant over them both, though.

According to a report, the team has contacted other teams to discuss a possible interest in quarterback Donovan McNabb.

Graziano’s source cautions that the team is still undecided about their quarterback decision, trying to gauge interest and possible compensation for Michael Vick and Kevin Kolb in addition to McNabb. While we’re sure the Eagles have a plan for their QBs this offseason, nothing concrete has emerged beyond a willingness to sit back and wait for a desperate team to overpay.

Cleveland Browns

According to beat writer Tony Grossi, quarterback Brady Quinn could be “shipped out” after the recent trade for Seneca Wallace.

Derek Anderson is already as good as gone, and Quinn won’t be able to learn Mike Holmgren’s West Coast offense and beat out Wallace in one offseason. The Browns may look to draft a quarterback in the second or third round, but Wallace is easily the favorite start Week 1.

Wallace

Performed decently-average behind the Seahawk’s line. From what I’ve watched from him, he can do well in the shotgun. Maybe Mangina knows how to use his skills. I never really thought the Seahawks was the right team for him.

Will Witherspoon

The free agent linebacker has been signed by the Tennessee Titans to a three-year deal worth $11 million with $5 million guaranteed.

Witherspoon, who started for both the Rams and the Eagles last season, has the versatility to play any of the three linebacker spots for the Titans. Per the Nashville City Paper, he will be “penciled in” as a starting outside linebacker, most likely on the weak side. The eraser could make an appearance if Keith Bulluck (torn ACL) re-signs.

Cleveland Browns Quarterback Situation

NFL Network’s Mike Lombardi thinks Brady Quinn will be the third quarterback on the team if he remains.

The alternative would be Cleveland moving Quinn for a late-round pick. According to Lombardi, Quinn is too inaccurate for the Browns’ new West Coast offense. Lombardi also projects Seneca Wallace to be the Browns’ No. 2 QB, and club president Mike Holmgren to find a starter via trade or the draft.

Larry Johnson
Free-agent RB Larry Johnson has visits scheduled with the Redskins and Raiders this week, according to a league source.

Johnson, an unrestricted free agent, spent the second half of last season with the Bengals after his much-publicized release by the Chiefs. He played in seven games with the Bengals as a backup to Cedric Benson, rushing for 204 yards on 46 attempts.

Very interesting

by duballers23 on Mar 10, 2010 1:12 PM PST reply actions

The Raiders should sign him if they can get him for fairly cheap

I think he has more left in the tank than LT. He averaged 4.4 ypc in his time with the Bengals, and if we could get a couple good linemen in the draft to block for him, then maybe he could get rejuvinated. He’s sort of got a Raider swagger, so maybe he’ll fit in. It would be awesome to see him do to the Chiefs, Chargers, and Broncos what he did to us for all those years.

I hate this move

the guy’s a cancer…he’s slow, and he doesn’t run as physical as he used to.

The Raiders need to tell Bush he’s the man and get ready for 20+ carries. Put DMC all over the field and get him 15 touches either via run or receptions.

LJ could give Bush some rest, but there’s other RBs that could do the same for cheaper that have more tread on their tires…

Still, and angry LJ against the Queefs twice a year could be funny…

Derrick Mason

The Ravens have signed the free agent wide receiver to a two-year, $8 million deal.

Astutely, GM Ozzie Newsome didn’t settle after acquiring Anquan Boldin. Mason is 36 now, but remains a highly effective possession threat, has missed just one game since 2002, and upped both his YPC average (13.0 to 14.1) and TDs (5 to 7) last season, indicating his body isn’t letting him down yet. While his numbers are likely to drop with Boldin as the Ravens’ new clear-cut No. 1 wideout, Mason’s return is exceptional news for Baltimore’s offense.

He’s also familiar with Lions OC Scott Linehan’s system from their time together in Minnesota early in Hill’s career. Browns-Broncos Trade

The Cleveland Browns have dealt quarterback Brady Quinn to the Denver Broncos in exchange for a sixth-round pick in 2011, a conditional late-round pick in 2012 and fullback Peyton Hillis.

While Quinn won’t be guaranteed anything in Denver — he’ll have to beat out Tom Brandstater and Chris Simms just to threaten Kyle Orton — the move is a best-case landing spot for the former No. 22 overall pick. At Notre Dame, Quinn played in essentially an identical offense to the one Josh McDaniels runs in Denver, and McDaniels’ track record of coaching up QBs is highly impressive.

Wow, the Browns have definitely been busy with their trades. I think this is their fourth one.

Eagles-Seahawks Trade

Philadelphia has acquired defensive end Darryl Tapp from Seattle in exchange for outside linebacker and defensive end Chris Clemons and a fourth-round pick in the upcoming draft.

It’s a worthwhile gamble for Philly. Tapp didn’t fit into defensive coordinator Gus Bradley’s scheme last year, but he’s been more disruptive than Clemons over the past few seasons. Sean McDermott will be charged with getting the 25-year-old back to his 2007-08 production as a rotational pass rusher.

The new coaching staff was going to phase Tapp out regardless, so they at least got a mid-round pick for the former second-rounder. Clemons, used as a rotational pass rusher the past two seasons, has averaged just 3.5 sacks the past two seasons in Philly. He’ll play the same role under Gus Bradley with the Seahawks.

Buffalo signed inside linebacker Andra Davis and defensive lineman Dwan Edwards today.

“Done deal I am a Buffalo Bill now,” Davis texted Tuesday afternoon. For the second straight year, the savvy veteran will be helping a defense switch from a 4-3 scheme to a 3-4. Paul Posluszny’s job is safe, though the other inside linebacker spot should be Davis’ for the taking. Coming off a serious surgery to re-attach his quadriceps muscle to his kneecap, Kawika Mitchell may be the odd man out.

Edwards joins Andra Davis as the second defensive addition of the day. A versatile defensive end in Baltimore, the 29-year-old will likely rotate across the Bills’ front line rotating in for ends Marcus Stroud and Spencer Johnson as well as nose tackle Kyle Williams.
