Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

A Little Friendly AFC West Competition Between Blogs:

I got an e-mail from the Chiefs Head Blogger this morning about how he is breaking daily traffic records since the Free Agency Period has begun. His site has received over 33,000 hits a day in the last two days. To put that in perspective that is as much as we get in an average week during the off-season.

Armed with that info, I looked at the other AFC West Blogs and found out that the Bronco Blog, Mile High Report, is averaging 10,000 hits a day and the Chargers are averaging 3,400 visits this week while we are at 3,100.

Here is my plan to become the most visited Blog in the AFC West.

Pick out a Free Agent that you are interested in coming to the Raiders, or just a free agent that you are interested in writing about. Respond to this thread and I will promote you to the front page to post your free agent article. Make sure that you have a photo in it, it is well thought out and that you tag and promote it beyond the Community at the bottom of the post.

Let's try this for the weekend. What do you think?

AFC West Blogs
Here is my plan to become the most visited Blog in the AFC West.

Well, that’s just not going to happen no matter what we put up here. The Kansas City Chiefs have one of the best communities on this site as a whole in terms of activity. Some blogs are simply just more active than others.

Let’s try this for the weekend. What do you think?

Personally, I think everything on the front page should be left up to those that are front page writers. I don’t mean to be rude, but that’s just how I feel. It is your call, though.

The Chiefs are the most visited:

Once upon a time they were the least visited. It all starts somewhere. And this experiment is only for this weekend.

Imagine yourself in KC Missouri ... the options are limited

The Nation is far flung but seems to centralize in major metropolitan areas, i.e. Bay Area, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Toronto. Residents of these places tend to have cultures that offer many worthwhile and competing activities – such as reading and commenting on a good football blog. But, I’m fine with your idea, Saint, as long as the quality of front page posts is good – why not?

Have you ever even been to Kansas City?

It’s a great city and there is plenty to do there.

by sirbed on Mar 6, 2010 8:01 PM PST up reply actions

Can you snow ski within 3 hours of Arrow Head or surf within 35 minutes of their stadium like we can from ours?

Can KC residents drive an hour and sample some of the world’s best Cabernets and then drive an hour back to listen to Sam Ramey or Hvorostovsky sing live or attend a Verdi or Puccini opera performed at a 1st class house? Or take a track-day at a world class track 45 minutes away? (Sears Pt) Or take any class you can imagine at a major University extension – 20 minutes away – whatever your heart desires? Or listen to top blues, jazz, rock performers live? That’s a smidgen of Bay Area culture. And New York and Toronto and Chicago are the same – they just have more interesting things happening than KC so people living there have more options.

by Sons-of-Blanda on Mar 6, 2010 8:30 PM PST up reply actions

The food is great in KC

the music scene is quite good especially for jazz there are 3 major colleges near by and there are the things to do there that are in any other major city.

I love California as I was born and raised there but after going to college in the Midwest and now living in the South I’m hear to tell you there are other great places besides the Bay Area.

Oh by the way what’s your reason for the Denver and San Diego sites having more hits?

by sirbed on Mar 6, 2010 10:28 PM PST up reply actions

Winning generates more interest in Denver and S.D. - and, in Denver's case the writing is often very good

S.D. has proportionately more young people than most cities – very youthful demographic – and they tend to blog more – but the Bolts bloggers on average are inferior to the other three divisions’ for football understanding (Babble from the Blue)..

for what it's worth

I grew up in KC and it’s better than you’ll give it credit. But, I live in Seattle these days and many of my fellow KC fans are all over the country, SD, FL, NYC. Many places with just as much culture/things to do as Bay area. KC is a huge college sports town too which I think plays well to producing Chiefs fans.

I wish there were more voices on S&BP

it sometimes seems only the same 7 or 8 people ever comment on anything.

I know I’ve asked people who are Raiders fans on the AN blog to come on over to the site and comment.

I think it would also help to not have 3 or 4 fanposts about the same thing which seems to happen a lot.

One last thing that we should all remember is to try and have fun on this site and not take ourselves too seriously.

by sirbed on Mar 6, 2010 3:04 PM PST reply actions

Me too, sirbed, but I appreciate the loyalty of those we do have

and we get some quality visitors from those other sites, who know to expect they need to bring their A games with them.

Ultimitely it's up to the team to generate buzz

without it, there’re really not much to talk about. The team puts out relatively little so we are stuck with talking about much of the same crap from limited resources.

The chiefs rec their posts much more than we do

Maybe that’s why they get more exposure… I didn’t find their posts more interesting than the post here – on the contrary.

by Spirals galore on Mar 6, 2010 7:18 PM PST reply actions

I rec stuff all the time

In fact I rec’d this post. I wish people would do it more if they like something. Heck I even rec Blanda posts most of the time and we don’t agree on much but if I think he’s done a good job he’ll get my support even if I don’t agree with it.

by sirbed on Mar 6, 2010 8:04 PM PST up reply actions

Eh

I don’t know that they necessarily get more exposure. More people just know about their site.

but when I go for news,

I am likely to get to some other site if the title and the little snippet of info catches my attention. So the site registers a hit.

I am much less likely to go to a site if the post is about news I already know. So what I am saying is that one way to attract visitors is to post interesting articles, like Armstrong’s latest.

by Spirals galore on Mar 6, 2010 8:36 PM PST up reply actions

Saint, this has everything to do with the fact that the Chiefs, with Pioli at the helm, have done a lot more for the Arrowhead Pride nation to be excited about

Than we have of late. In fact, we’re all pretty much in agreement the Routt tender just felt like a kick in the nether regions. I’ll try to post a quality post on the free agent I think we should take, because I think that’s a good thing to do anyways, but if this team did more to give us real faith in our future, we’d outhit AP in no time.

I agree with Spirals on the quality, not quantity of posting, but there is some redundancy. I believe that has everything to do with the fact that there are few real nuggets of news for us to talk about this offseason. Sadly, this team has a horrible stigma attached to it now, and it’s really sticking. It’s getting to where the guys on our team are corroborating all the shit ex-Raiders in the media have put out there, and on whom we’ve jumped and deemed as haters.

Perhaps we have seen through Raiders goggles for too long?

That's why I liked A.A. Armstrong's latest post

Very thoughtful and reasonably optimistic. Much better than the constant drumbeat about JR, AL and whatnot (although I must say it’s delicious, albeit futile, to comment on the above posts).

by Spirals galore on Mar 6, 2010 8:29 PM PST up reply actions

Yes. Very quality, well thought out post. Hard to argue with what he has to say

Though I disagree with the assessment we should even think of skipping on this first round tackle talent we have available. I hope we can somehow get Okung or Davis, but will be happy even if it’s Bulaga or Williams.

Ah, my friend, we part ways here - for I want either a MLB or DT in the 1st

but it seems that neither of us will have our way and it will be another CB – Al is rather fond of the position and will reincarnate as one eventually.

by Sons-of-Blanda on Mar 6, 2010 8:37 PM PST up reply actions

I want McClain, or Suh or McCoy

after that, I find no MLB or DT worthy of the first round pick, which is why I say take the best OT. I wouldn’t be terribly pissed by the Haden pick, so long at the next was MLB, and the next DT, and the next OT. I just feel there is a big dropoff for lineman after the first four or five guys, who figure to be gone by pick twelve.

The difference in opinion is what keeps our minds engaged.

Most of us agree on JR, AL, etc., so it’s like preaching to the choir, mind-numbing, and boring to people from other sites. (Having said that, though, I alsolutely delight in the endless JR jabs.)

Here is an interesting post from the Mile High Report

on the importance of aggressive coaching. The post is thought-provoking and well-researched.

http://www.milehighreport.com/2010/2/24/1322597/talk-dirty-to-me-the-power-of

Most of our recent posts are breathless reports about current news. This is important, for sure, but there should be also posts with more analysis of those news.

I like the HS coach who became famous for never punting or kicking field goals or extra points

between you and me, I’d like to see field goals stricken from the game. Punting can continue if only to legitimize the name of the game.

by Sons-of-Blanda on Mar 6, 2010 9:26 PM PST up reply actions

Well...

Since we just paid out the ass for a kicker, I hope they don’t get stricken from the game! Haha…

we do have the best kicking game

its part of the game , field goals, punting and field postion. thats why the steelers made reed there kicker the franchise tag player. we do have the best punter and field goal kicker.
